      Strong start to the show. It looks like there will be a shorter list of main characters in the beginning which should help. GoT had a lot of characters to start off with similar names and was sometimes hard to keep track of when names were mentioned.
      Looking forward to seeing if we get to see more of the Night King in this series.

    Tiny, insignificant point: the Targaryens left Valyria BEFORE the Doom, because Daenys Targaryen, daughter of Aenar, dreamt of the Doom and convinced the Targaryens to relocate to Dragonstone. Every other Valyrian family laughed at them for doing so…and then perished in the Doom.

    I've seen a lot of people saying they get little finger vibes from October Hightower but I think he's more of a Tywyn Lannister character, seasoned Noble from a big house who knows how influence and manipulate, also a big parallel with how Tywyn told Cersi to get involved with Robert and Otto tells his daughter to go see the King, both pimping out their daughters for a greater goal. Whereas little finger comes from a small house and is a bit more slimmy, sneaky and back handed wannabe. Also I believe the model the King is making is of Old Valeria not King Landing

    The Arya Easter eggs were crazy,
    Rhaenyra would rather be a knight that a royal whom
    Rhaenyra wants to ride on a dragon and explore the world, like Arya wants to see what’s west of westeros.
    The dagger of course is another obvious one
    The mention of Princess Nymeria who she named her hound after.
    The mention of Dark Sister, wielded by a heroine of Arya(remember the Arya and Tywin Lannister scenes)
    Also the mention of Visenya, who wielded dark sister. Rhaenyra says she wants to name her hopefully new born sister, visenya because the egg she picked out for the babies cradle, reminds her of visenya’s dragon.
    So they really hammered it home that rhaenyra and Arya have very similar heroes and they have similiar traits which is great cuz Arya was a stand out character so seeing show with a character like her being the major lead is awesome

      and the fighting wasn't the problem per se; Battle of the Bastards was good, even with some of the janky stuff like cavalry looping around an encirclement, or Rickon not running serpentine. The flight from Hardhome was _intense,_ and still one of the best.
      The problem with Season 8's battles was that they were terribly constructed through and through. Who puts siege engines in front of a defending position, instead of say the castle towers? I know you're supposed to make the White Walkers look unstoppable, but you don't do that by making two military powers act stupid. The creators clearly had checked out by that time.

    I took Viscerys' nonchalant reaction to getting his wound burned + the scene of him holding his hand over candle flames when waitng to speak w/ Rhaenyra to mean that he's also fire proof like Dani was

    • @nikolaykomissarenko7822
      @nikolaykomissarenko7822 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im pretty sure he just didnt want to be burned as he is a Targaryen so it would kind of be against the family notion. At the start they imply that he was giving the suggestion of cauterization before and refused, which to me means he's not fireproof. Which he isnt, Targaryians are NOT fireproof, ONLY Dani Targaryen is. Due to the specific circumstances of: The birth of the dragons, The witch that was burned, the Khal, everything at once. You can google that.
      Of course books and movies/shows do not have to match word for word, but that is how it "was", either way I lean against it because of what I think of that specific scene (meaning not including that outside knowledge.)

    • @zarandrewstra7833

      Dani isn’t fireproof either GRRM has said repeatedly the funeral pyre that quickened her dragon eggs was a miracle that happened because blood sacrifice and dragon genes and that miracle can’t be repeated. I'm pretty sure Viserys didn't get the choice between Aemma or Baelon. He could either lose both, or sacrifice Aemma to give Baelon a chance. Viserys was broken by the choice.

    • @michaellee4276
      @michaellee4276 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really unclearly written. At first it seems like Child or Mother, but the Maester only describes one option. So you are surely right. BUT... they definitely could sacrifice the baby and cut it out through the normal opening and save Aemma. The Maester doesn't give this option because he doesn't approve, and he knows that Viserys would not choose it anyway. No "right-thinking" nobleman in Westeros would sacrifice a possible Male heir for a woman (especially her last chance at one.) If Viserys chose Aemma, it would prove he was hysterical and shouldn't be obeyed-- so why allow that possibility (in the Maester's mind). And the Maester probably thinks it convenient for Aemma to die if the child is female so the King can remarry and breed again. The Maester totally puts his thumb on the scale (as Daemon later says, they are good at manipulating Viserys). So the choice is a chance of a normal birth in which one or both survive (and a larger chance they both die), or sacrificing Aemma to improve the child's odds.

    • @AdoreYouInAshXI
      @AdoreYouInAshXI 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaellee4276 It's not poorly written. The Maester flat out says "You have a choice to sacrifice one or lose them both". I can't believe you half wits are having such a difficult time with this. I swear, people need to put their phones down during the middle of a TV show and pay attention. There is no reason to think they knew how to do a 9 month abortion to save the mother.

      It's by all the means the same prop, the dagger itself ended in the cart of weapons that King Robert brought along with his court at the start of A game of Thrones so it makes absolute sense that it was in king's possession at the start of House of the Dragon
      I'm more curious to know by the end of the series if they will bring up in what hands it passed before being thrown in the pile with all the other weapons, it was a Valyrian Steel dagger afterall, not something you will willingly put in a closet with other steel swords to take dust.
      (in the books Eddard Stark hypotetized that Joffrey, who was the real culprit of the failed assassination of Bran Stark, misinterpreted the words of Tyrion about killing mercifully someone that was as crippled as Bran, and hired the catspaw assassin giving him a dagger he found in the stash that was travelling with the court, without realising by his own ignorance that the weapon, being made from Valyrian steel, was in fact very recognizable and iconic and easily traceable back at the King's own possession, setting in motion everything that happened further)

    Aegon's dream makes the ending of Game of Thrones even worse because his prophecy would have been fulfilled if Jon Snow had sat the Iron Throne (with or without Dany). Either Jon was ice and fire (Stark and Targaryen) or he and Dany together were ice (Jon) and fire (Dany) if they ruled together. True Dany was mad like her father- so it probably would have been better if Jon ruled alone. Aegon predicts The Long Night and the coming of the White Walkers but Viserys says that a Targaryen must sit the throne and we all know that Jon is really Aegon Targaryen. Even though members of the Night Watch cannot wear any crowns, dying freed Jon of that oath.
    Jon should have been the one to sit the Iron Throne at the end of GOT.

      Prophecies don't always come true (or maybe partially but not completely), that is a theme in Martin's storytelling. Jon (a Targaryen), while he wasn't sitting the throne, did help bring people together to defeat the army of the dead. Jon sitting the Throne at the end would have been a typical fantasy trope ending.

      I think they were trying to portray just how much pent up violence is coming. The melee scenes were used to show how the Nobles, and even the common folk of Westeros were so heated in their rivalries and so divorced from the realities of war that this spectacle was seen as acceptable to the onlooking crowd. The page vomiting in the background as he had been very close to the action, as well as the mercilessness of the violence being portrayed was used to foreshadow the tremendous violence that is yet to come when the war finally begins, and how quickly people will regret getting caught up in it when it does. Especially as it had been established that there had been about 70 continuous years of general enforced peace with the Targaryens and their Dragons at the peak of their power, having only just lost Balerion the greatest of all their Dragons within the last Decade or so.

Soooooo.... ijs, did anyone else catch that? You may not care but 🤷🏽‍♀️

    You misunderstood a couple things:
    1. Viserys's choice was: cut the baby out, or they both die. There was no way to save his wife...even if the baby died somehow, they'd still have to cut it out of her.
    2. Daemon was clearly upset at his party; he wasn't celebrating his brother's misery! He was mourning in his own way and said the wrong thing, reported out of context by someone who hates him.
    Both of these things drastically affect the characterization of these two characters...

      I thought he said sacrifice one or lose them both, implying either one.

    • @ElysiaBrenner
      @ElysiaBrenner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JaneAxon123 That is what he said, but that's not what it implies. Think about it: how could they have possibly saved his wife? (With *their* medical technology; it would be possible today, ofc. Neither would have to die today, not for the breach birth part anyway.)
      In this case, there was only one way the sacrifice could go.

      I saw a comment earlier about Daemon that I had to go back and look again at, he never actually says the “heir for a day” on screen. Otto and Daemon hate each other so it wouldn’t be as big of a stretch for him to do that, especially since his path to power just opened up with him wanting to set his daughter up with Viserys and he would like him out of the picture. Daemon didn’t outright say if it was him or not when asked and his response doesn’t make me completely confident with it, so just a theory.

    I think this show is pretty excellent for the first episode and they were very smart to put it only for HBO Max instead of regular HBO it will definitely give a lot more people to subscribe

    Remember, we had season upon season in this world where absolute horrors were being depicted in virtually every episode lol from Theon's torture at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, to Harrenhal being shown as a massive ancient ruin used primarily, at the moment, for torture and depravity.
    Every single episode I can recall, at one point or another, saying; "Jeezus! Can't [this character] catch a friggin' break already?!" 😁
    Whether it was Arya, being captured and mistaken for a boy made to sleep in the mud in a cage, or burned bodies of children being strung up at Winterfell, or all of the disgusting terrors taking place at Craster's Keep, beyond the Wall.
    We went from highlight to highlight like the battle of Blackwater bay to the Red Wedding to John Snow "undercover" with the Wildlings before having to fight against them at Castle Black, without anything even resembling relief in-between!
    The introduction and fleshing out of new horrendous characters, and witnessing what even the most seemingly unimportant ones were capable of, doing even to the more important characters, or so we thought lol a band of Bolton men chopping Jaime Lannister's hand off, or multiple seasons of everyone believing we'd see Caitlin Stark reunited with her children once again, only to see her murdered unceremoniously by old Walder Frey!
    And that's all without even mentioning what we had to watch Daenerys going through, across the narrow sea.
    My point is; This world that George R.R. Martin created is quite typically an extremely difficult place for even the most seemingly "secure" characters to survive!
    And, there was a reason we all tuned in every week lol because we needed to see what would happen next, because that balance of power was so precarious most of the time there really was no telling which one would be ahead or which one gone forever, week to week!
    If they're trying to get everyone submerged back in all over again, they've got a TON of heavy lifting to do, even with George R.R. Martin right there helping them, for it to have any chance of being anywhere near as compelling.
    But, I'm hopeful. 🤞

    Note to all young guys and girls, and including Ryan: If a baby is in breach and can’t be born, it kills the mother too if she can’t birth it. Either bloodloss or the eventually suffocated dead baby turning septic killing her. In current day, usually the option is to cut the vagina wider to widen the birthing canal rather than a C-section, but she would’ve died from that as well. There was no way to get around Aemma dying, birthing is a traumatic experience on the body. The issue is not telling Aemma what they were going to do at all, or knocking her out with more milk of the poppy at the least.

      They already pointed out that more narcotics would harm the baby.

    One thing to add: The king wasn't given the choice between saving his wife or son, he was told he could either save his son or none of them. Initially he would have likely not chosen his son over his wife, whom he clearly loved, but he was basically pushed to make the choice of saving his son. Now when they actually try to cut out the baby, we can tell this her dying was clearly not certain, as the mother screams and begs for life, putting up quite a fight (and she had survived multiple misscarriages and stillborns already). But at this point the king is so obsessed with the hope of having a son that he refuses to see that. After losing them both, I feel like he can finally realise what the pressure of having a male heir has done to him, which I believe is also part of why he finally acknowledged his daughter. I think the idea that women were always treated as lesser and usually just given the roles of wives/birthgivers but then rising to power through wit and intrigue is a strong theme overall in the GoT universe. A lot of the biggest players were women (Danny, Cercei, Margery/Olenna Tyrell,Ellaria)

    This is great. You’re great.
    But enough recappers have misrepresented this. I really fell the need to defend my boy Viserys.
    He was NOT asked to choose between the life of his wife and the life of the baby. It was a much more terrible nuanced trolly problem choice. He was asked to do nothing, “leaving it to the gods,” which is a euphemism for BOTH Aemma and Baelor die, or he ACTIVELY chooses to save his son, which means ACTIVELY choosing to kill his wife.
    It’s 1. Wife and son die. Or 2. Kill wife, save son.
    There is no philosophically empirically correct choice. The tragedy is Viserys’s. Not Aemma’s, as she was inevitably doomed.
    Modern Terran (our) morality might waste my a discussion with said doomed wife, as opposed to drugging and gaslighting her. But the tragedy and judgement should have everything to do with the dilemma, not to methods and mores.

    FACT CHECK
    The King was told to attempt to save the baby, or risk losing both. The baby was in breach and wasn't coming out before killing the Queen. So it was, save the baby or lose both.

    The guy got his scrotum taken off and they do show it. And I’m sorry but I don’t think stress related e.d. Daemon is the most interesting. I think alicent with her stress fingers and rhaenera choking up at saying dracerys at her mom’s funeral are these subtle ways they are more interesting, but I’m super excited to see the more - I’ve read all the books and listened to the audible way too many times. In the book - Aemma’s death is so dry & I think the differences between seeing it happen and what the maesters wrote 100 yrs after based on some contemporary sources will be interesting. Much & more…little and less. Rickon stark looked different than I thought and SURPRISE no one made a fuss ab it…wonder white 🤔🐺
