    Ok this is gonna sound dumb but how are you attaching the batteries, are they rechargeable as well or what

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nicholas salwei The two 12v 10Ah SLA batteries are bound together and placed inside a cheap tool bag (along with the scooter's original motor controller). That in turn is strapped into a modified cup holder. And yes, they are rechargeable using the same charger that came with the Razor scooter I took apart; all the wiring connections inside are the same.

    On your website you never explain how all the wires are hooked, could you maybe post a video showing how to wire it all up?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check one of the comments sections there, it's been asked before. The wiring, though simple, is different for every scooter or motor-controller manufacturer, and most even include their own instructions/schematics on their product or repair pages.

    • @PhysicsDude

    Hi.
    Nice project !
    still, I have some question and dub's that will fit my bike.
    I have handbike for wheelchair, with front wheel traction (pedaling).If I put this motor on the front wheel, what will happen when I want to pedal ? If the motor wheel, push on the tire, will not brake down the wheel ?
    Thank you.

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Syncro Van If you manage to find a solid mounting point for the motor, it shouldn't cause any excessive wear on the tires in any case (coasting or powering the wheel). This is because a 300w motor does not have enough power to break traction and skid along the rubber. Also, when you want to only pedal, the motor will be able to freewheel with negligible resistance.

    • @syncrovanCos
      @syncrovanCos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Physics Dude *My bad. I searched on local Amazon. What controller should I use ?

    • @syncrovanCos

      +Physics Dude Can I use that motor, with Turningy 4S 10.000mAh Lipo ?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Syncro Van It's a 24volt motor, so it will not run very quick or powerfully on 14.8volts (4S). However, I have tested it on a 6S pack (22.2volts) with success. Putting two 4S packs in series to make an 8S pack may be even better if you can keep the motor and controller cool/happy.

    • @syncrovanCos
      @syncrovanCos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Physics Dude Then, I guess my 2x 3S 5200mAh in paralel, will fit better. I have hard time finding the controller in EU , on good price.From Amazon.com they did not ship on my location, and on my local Amazon, didn't find any. For the motors, I found some, and have to decide witch seller to chose. Thank you.

    Hi dude! Still using this bike? How does a motor work? How often did you change brushes and tires?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been a couple years since I used it. But the motor has easily gained a few hundred miles.
      It's a brushed DC motor. I've taken it apart in the past to re-glue a magnet that fell off (don't hit motors with hammers) and the brushes still had loads of life left in them.
      Being only a 300w motor, it doesn't have enough power to noticeable deteriorate the bicycle tire.

    How are you only getting 10 miles on 10Ah of battery?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrLazer1211 The 10 mile range figure was tested with negligible use of the bike's peddles in a suburban area (occasional stops); the motor did most of the work. You could easily increase the range by peddling normally and using the motor/battery to help.

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pqxxedf Your bike either must have one of those efficient brushless three-phase motors or you are draining your batteries below their minimum safe voltage. Or maybe I had some old cheap batteries back then; I haven't done a full range test myself in years.

      +Physics Dude find one with an extra long shaft then you can press fit on the roller. Or form it right on the shaft: I saw a YT video where the guy takes #2 plastic and melts it and turns it into a v belt. That would be the perfect match for this. Maybe carve a few Vs across it or even remelt the surface and add some sand to it. Or just coat it in that tape... what's that called? (I've got about 4 skateboards people have thrown out sitting in my bike shed, figured they'd be good for parts sometime. Most of us turners make steadyrests out of the wheels so when I had the ambition & need I thought I'd make one of those.) Time to head to bed. Thanks for one of the 2 best bike videos I have seen all this year.

    I have to wonder if you could have this done more on the area that a V-brake is used instead of on the tire, which might wear down the tire quicker. Even if you had two set up to close against that area an using the same principle drive the wheel forward it could okay. Add in that some models of this type of drive drop down or pivot up to make contact with the tire's surface, you could have the one/two drive wheels pivot into place or disengage in the same manner.

      Isn't it better to put the letter on the left side of the back frame so you can use your shocks and all the gears would have sprocket mounted on the left side that hooks to the hub but like your idea

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr05chevy It's a generic 24v, 280-300w DC Brushed motor. it's often sold for around $40 new as a replacement for the Razor E300 Scooter.

    What type of battery did u use?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Garramone I started with a pair of 12volt 7Ah or 10Ah SLA batteries and used them for years without issue (these are the same batteries that the original scooter came with and are quite robust). Recently I started using an 8S (~30v) LiPo pack. LiPos however require a balance charger and can't be charged with the scooter/bike's SLA charger.

    • @PhysicsDude

      Yes. You don't usually want suspension when bicycling on flat surfaces since it gives you a less efficient ride. Most higher end bicycles will let you lock the front suspension with a single leaver or switch.

    Hi. Great project, and seemingly quite robust. I checked your link for a materials list, and I get to a page that says Page Not Found, and "Apache/2.4.38 (Raspbian) Server at thestuffwebuild.com Port 80". This appears to be the case for all of teh project pages, as well as the Contact page. Pleqase fix if possible, as I would love to adapt it to a 16" folding Dahon bike that I have. Cheers!

    • @aristoteliskaravidas7206
      @aristoteliskaravidas7206 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried on the ebay but there are only motor arbors from the US and the shipping is double the price of the arbor itself (plus import customs), no arbors from european sellers such as Germany or UK

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you or a friend have the tools to make your own from a piece of bar stock? If not, you could epoxy the skateboard wheel directly onto the nut+sprocket on the motor. I did this for a while, but the 5-minute epoxy I used eventually broke free of the rubber skateboard wheel. You might have to reinforce yours a bit more.

    can i use a motor from a vaccum cleaner?

    • @PhysicsDude
      @PhysicsDude  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not. Most battery powered vacuums aren't powerful enough for an ebike. Likewise, most plug-in vacuum cleaner universal motors would be too dangerous and cumbersome to mount properly even though most will work on DC.

      kyle torreon a blender motor would be even less likely since most are not powerful enough I think. Using any household appliance for that matter would be difficult since they all require 110 to 240 volts to operate.
