Hello! nice video man, I am a firm lover of ps3's myself, I grew up off the ps3 instead of the xbox 360 as a kid, having the ps2 before I got my ps3 super slim. Today, I have a jailbroken modded ps3 fat (80 gig non backwards compat with a 1 tb ssd swap) and i have a passion for my ps3 and ps3's in general, I have a ps5 and i still play my ps3 more than that thing. I want to mod my ps3 to have the white case that was released later and if possible mixed with the chrome trim of the backwards compat versions for a clean white and chrome one of a kind ps3 build. I was wondering if you were willing to share the discord of these ps3 builders because I would love to learn a thing or two from them as well! in the future I also hope to expand my ps3 collection to have more modded ps3s as well (also want to mod my old ps2 thats on its way out with a full referb) (also subbed and liked! lol) Edit: My fat boy does still work lmao, I try to keep my ps3 in pristine condition, replacing the thermal paste at the same time once a year I would relace the thermal paste on my gaming pc.
Great video. I got a PS3 slim I bought new around 2009 that had the power supply die about 2 years ago. Atleast that was a cheap fix. I never played my PS3 much either but was always plugged into the wall. After watching your video I would of given up on those PS3 phats and just get those games on the PC and get better graphics or played with the PS3 Slim you had bought. Loved your dedication to the problem, minus the hurt on your wallet :(
In my defense I didn’t realize that the ps3 I bought was a backwards compatible model, I only found out later that it was special but still didn’t know about the defect.
Welcome to the rabbit hole...I also follow RipFelix, Swueep, The Booter and others...I have a Booter Franky...but still am trying to do my own franky...Always recommend to practice on a dead cheaper unit...SAVE THE A01...I have over 20 units...I am sick
Unfortunately that’s just a bandaid fix, there is no RLOD on a phat model, if it triple beeped and flashes red it was YLOD. It is due to bumpgate failure, RIP-Felix explains it much better in his video than I ever could, it’s a long video but worth the watch
I've just ordered a CECH-2003A so I can run cfw. Got a super slim with Hen but want the full experience. Got a slim in the loft I need to find too. Modding consoles is the bestt.
I’m on this same mission with the PS3. I have four of the reverse compatible PS3 is. Three of them hardware and one software. The software one after a reflow did turn on, but it’s not gonna stay on. I think I’m going to have to continue to do research.
If you used a heat gun you absolutely did not reflow it, you did a bandaid fix, there is only one true fix for these models and it is the Frankenstein mod if you have a YLOD that is GPU related, the GPU is defective, I recommend watching RIP-Felix’s YLOD video
Also the Booter is great very fair price compared to others, and my first A01 popcorned on the Booter live on youtube...that is a bummer...needed another A01
While the fat model that I have doesn’t feature backwards compatibility whatsoever, it does at least feature a more reliable GPU which was fabricated in a 65nm node. The only issue I’d say is how darn loud the fan gets and I’m aware of the need to delid eventually, but the process is extremely risky and a wrong move could render the PS3 non functioning.
Yes they can be loud, I would recommend getting it delidded and repasted, I can recommend a few people in America, there is Console King and Studio Halabi on eBay and there is also Computer Booter who also has a website that you can go to and where you can call his store and ask him about the pricing.
That's why I stay away from these phat ones and bought a slim model. Not that they are perfect, my first slim was defective and I had to return it, but my second one still kicks (knock on plywood). I don't care about backwards compatibility because I have like 3 PS2s hanging around me, so I just play on those every once in a while. Good video and very nicely presented.
@@Nascar1243 Thanks, man. I am also an enthusiast, but don't have the time and money to sink into the PS3 and I also don't have the equipment. I was very interested when I was in college, but same thing - lack of time and money. The PS3 was the new hotness back then, so it wasn't a cheap toy. It was the current gen console. So now I'm interested in reading the syscon, I think I can be able to learn that. I've watched yours and RIP Felix's videos on the YLOD and I can say that you are doing a great job on explaining how to deal with these problems the right way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Also, Louis Rossmann IS right - reballing is NOT repair, if you use the same deffective chip. If you reball with a working chip, it IS a legit repair. He says it in his video where you got the quote from and has a video doing it on a laptop.
@@vdochev I know, it’s just funny to use that quote, we all like him and what he does for repair, I think his main point was don’t reball as a “fix” unless you know that is the fix
The fact that i live near computer booters and forgot i can take my chche01 that i just bought for 30$. It still works but i want to get it cleaned up but am too scared to open it myself
It’s not too bad, just be careful when separating the board from the heatsink, don’t force it off, usually they come off easy but if you aren’t comfortable doing it take it to Booter
The PS3/360 is the nightmare era of console design. It was like these consoles were design in a special place in hell. Where reparability be damned. Imagine being in the dark with these issues for nearly a decade trying to figure out how to fix them, with only false positive results. Ughghhgh. By the way. Ever notice how Sony hardly ever mentions the PS3 anymore?
The ps3 failure rate was on average 10-20%, the reason for this was their IHS, that piece of metal saved them alone with their more aggressive fan curve, if it weren’t for that then Sony would’ve had to do a recall as well and I firmly believe that
@@Nascar1243I'd even guess at 10 to 20% being a somewhat modest figure. 😮 I'd go further as to say it's a wonder it ever got released with such a design flaw!...... 😮
@@phlhoran12396 well I know it was around 13% in 2008 but unless it reaches a higher number they won’t do a recall, they have what’s called a yield rate so they could’ve assumed those were just defective
Had 2 PS3s die due to GPU failure. My A01 PS3 that I bought on eBay a few years ago shut off and got YLOD right after I put in a disc. Had to open it up to get the disc out. I ended up selling it (this was before I knew anything about Frankenstein mod). I still had my PS3 slim. What was really interesting was that it also suffered GPU failure as well. It would freeze and show artifacts on the screen. Tried both AV and HDMI and got same results. I guess I just got unlucky. My best guess is maybe it’s because it was dropped when my sibling fell off the skateboard while carrying it. But the system did continue to work for several more years after that so idk. Now I have a BO1 PS3, still works with its original 90nm GPU. When it finally dies, I know where to go for a Frankenstein mod.
@@SevenNumber7 the slim was very likely bga failure and not gpu failure, artifacts and freezing don’t always mean gpu failure, they can also indicate damage to the solder joints under either the cell or RSX.
Hey, when I saw the part in your video when the console start to overheat by playing a PS2 game. Same thing happened to me when I bought a 2nd hand PS3 (cecha01) it has Evilnat (jailbreak) and another plug in to mount games (ManaGunZ) from the HDD. I thought my PS3 was faulty or the chip PS2/PS1 chip was bad. Yesterday I wanted to replace once again all the thermal paste and thermal pads but the same overheat problem was there and I thought, well this is really weird, surely the stupid jailbreak has something to do here. I'm not 100% sure, but one thing is pretty true for me. I tried with the only ps2 disc I have (FIFA2003) and no overheating. Then I thought, well if I leave the disc inside and virtualy mount a PS2 game could that do the trick? I had that issue with my new 3ds Xl several years ago trying to play copy protected games like Zelda Spirit tracks Then I mounted Silent Hill 2 And before I couldn't even pass the intro cutscene without the system overheating Now I'm several hours in the game without problems. Would be nice if you can check that out with your system and maybe my solution help someone else out there, I was searching this topic since I bought mine years ago and nothing, but your video inspired my to give it another go and I'm happy now to be able to play SH2 before it's remake release
check the settings for PS2, it could just be locking up for some reason, there was a setting that I had on one time and it just shut the PS3 off instantly as soon as I loaded a game from an app like ManaGunZ, try messing with the settings for PS2 upscaling and see if that fixes anything
Awesome video. What type of screwdriver do I need for the middle screw to open up my cechk01 so I can look at the inside? Thanks. In case I have to take my unit to the river and unload a clip in it, would you recommend the slim or super slim? Also who's the most trustworthy online retailer to buy from? Thanks boss. Go Sooners!
Not sure which screw you are referring to, for the most part it is a Phillips head screw driver other than the security torx screw under the warranty sticker, I would personally recommend a 20xx or 21xx slim, if you don’t care about having cfw then a 30xx or 25xx, some 25xx are CFW compatible and some aren’t, it all depends on their date code
yes ubreakidestroy should be the name it should be called , because they destroyed my samsung phone and made it from bad to worse they wont call you . You have to follow up with t hem or else they wont ever call you ,i called their corporte and told them off
Years ago I took mine to a local shop, got it back and it worked for a month and and day( warranty was good for a month). I took it back and after a bit of a discussion over 1 day. They decided to fix it again. I now have a slim and 2 super slims. And I rarely turn on my original PS3 because I know it’s just a matter of time( if I actually use it) that it will die again. That’s my fix for mine🤣🤣🤣
You’ll have to grab syscon codes or send it in for proper repair, I wouldn’t trust places like Fasttech as they do not do proper repair. I actually did try to talk to them and they said their method was the best and blocked me. If you want it fixed properly send it to Computer Booter, Console King, or Studio Halabi if you are in the US, if not I can try to find others

If it’s an H01 then it has the same problem as the original BC models
@@Nascar1243 I agree. The A01, B01 will only increase in value as more and more die off. 2 weeks is really good. Have you looked into putting one of the newer fat model PSUs in your console? I’ve heard they emit less heat than the A and B variant PSU.
@@codybrown3480 the APS-231 emits more heat than the 226 psu that comes with those models typically, if it has a ZSSR then replace it with a 226 only, tests were done and it was found the 231 runs much hotter than both the zssr and the 226 psu. So it is advised to stick with a 226 if your psu has it. Value wise it will be a while before it goes up significantly.

@Nascar1243 just found out US & Japan Blu-Rays are Region A, so I shouldn't have any issues with Blu-Ray discs, PS3, PS2 or PS1 Games on cfw. Regular standard disc movies won't play due to region lock even on cfw for some reason I'm not sure why.
@@bradj9251yeah blu rays are fine, dvd movies would not be fine on it, even cfw wont help it and nobody really knows what’s going on with that, but other than dvd movies the region lock should lift, the only lock was really with ps2 games iirc

Honestly with the price of them now (which can be between $150-300) it is just better to have one that will last, this model anyways. I don’t play ps2 games and at the time I just liked the console so I figured I’d get it fixed the right way. It actually has been more reliable than some of my super slims oddly enough
I've got the same model and I had the same issue, I fixed it my self by reflowing the GPU and adding a piece of metal unde the V shaped brackets that holds the heat sink to the CPU and GPU, it works fine for about a week now on stress games like The Last Of Us and God of war 3, I've set the fans to run faster to hold the temperatures under 65C° hope it holds for good 🤞
@@nateriver6225 that won’t hold long term, for one the metal you added will put a ton of stress on the RSX and CELL and risk cracking the die since it is not meant to undergo that kind of stress since it’s essentially the same as an eraser mod but way worse. A reflow is essentially a band aid fix, you aligned the bumps in a defective chip temporarily but as soon as the RSX hits 70c it will fail again. The only true fix is to get your RSX replaced, a reflow is never a permanent fix and I definitely wouldn’t leave those pieces of metal in there as you are only doing more harm than good.

Had mine since 2008. Worked great. Didn't turn it on for 5 years until last week and now have the YLOD. Dont know what caused this because it worked fine for years. Could sitting there without turning it on for all them years cause this?
Yes it could technically get YLOD from sitting there, now it likely won’t be from the failing rsx unless you had rsx related issues before putting it in storage. It could be a failed cap or even a failed PSU. You’d have to do syscon diagnostics to figure out what’s wrong with the console and what’s causing your YLOD.

In my defense I didn’t realize that the ps3 I bought was a backwards compatible model, I only found out later that it was special but still didn’t know about the defect.
Welcome to the rabbit hole...I also follow RipFelix, Swueep, The Booter and others...I have a Booter Franky...but still am trying to do my own franky...Always recommend to practice on a dead cheaper unit...SAVE THE A01...I have over 20 units...I am sick
great video rip your ps3 experience
YLOD killed my first ps3. I used the blow dryer trick and all that to save it until it hit the RLOD
Unfortunately that’s just a bandaid fix, there is no RLOD on a phat model, if it triple beeped and flashes red it was YLOD. It is due to bumpgate failure, RIP-Felix explains it much better in his video than I ever could, it’s a long video but worth the watch
Great story man! I actually have a ps3 60gb I may break out to do the cap replacement
Tokins were debunked, if your system gets the YLOD then do syscon diagnostics
Fair enough, glad you enjoyed the video
@@vdochev I know, it’s just funny to use that quote, we all like him and what he does for repair, I think his main point was don’t reball as a “fix” unless you know that is the fix
you found a true repairmen, the one my father found 14 years ago did a reballing and guess what! It did not fix the YLOD
@@Nascar1243 That's fair enough. I think I was just being a tad presumptuous. Thanks for the info.

Can't believe how the first technician couldn't fix your console...
It was more how they refused to fix it than anything, they didn’t even look at it
my phat does that red light thing but hasn't ylod yet thankfully
I had that issue with my new 3ds Xl several years ago trying to play copy protected games like Zelda Spirit tracks
Then I mounted Silent Hill 2
And before I couldn't even pass the intro cutscene without the system overheating
Now I'm several hours in the game without problems.
Awesome work ❤
yes ubreakidestroy should be the name it should be called , because they destroyed my samsung phone and made it from bad to worse they wont call you . You have to follow up with t hem or else they wont ever call you ,i called their corporte and told them off
Utterly disgraceful. 😮
I would've kept that G-Model even if its unfixable. You could've used it as a scrap board to try delidding since you wouldn't have anything to lose
It was an H01, but even then it wasn’t worth keeping, I had no plans to do a delid at the time, although now I’m good at it
Sorry everyone, for some reason TH-cam had the hold comments option on and I was not aware of it.
Every computer will eventually quit.
Just started the same journey fixed one of mine by removing and replacing tokens and yellow light of death is back
You’ll have to grab syscon codes or send it in for proper repair, I wouldn’t trust places like Fasttech as they do not do proper repair. I actually did try to talk to them and they said their method was the best and blocked me. If you want it fixed properly send it to Computer Booter, Console King, or Studio Halabi if you are in the US, if not I can try to find others
@@Nascar1243 I checked him out after watching your video there was also another person squeept I probably will send one in to have Frankenstein done but I am definitely gonna figure out how to do it am an automotive mechanic I love tinkering with things gonna get A BGA rework station and probably break a few boards lol My downside will be going through the steps of the computer after the repair thank you very much for your video and information
Great video!
I have a later Phat model PS3 CECH-HL01
It’s probably prone to the YLOD but not like the original Launch model PS3
@@RaysGamingChannel2003 not sure if you mean H01 or L01 but if it’s an L01 then no they are tanks, the tokins can fail eventually but not for a long time and obviously other things can go wrong but you’d have to check syscon logs to know. If it’s an H01 then it has the same problem as the original BC models
@@Nascar1243 it’s a CECHL01
Good story an video
Same problem with my console. Bought it second hand a month ago
So the flashing red light is the YLOD? Don't know what your major is but get a job in editing. Great job. Almost like listening to a podcast.
Yes you are correct, and I’m an Aerospace Engineering major, I just do this as a side hobby, glad you enjoyed the video
Great video. Edge of my seat the whole time. How long did Computer Booter have the console?
It was about a week or 2, nowadays he may take 2 weeks depending on how much he has going on that day. I’d say it is 100% worth the cost.
I also bought a A01 a week ago for around 90usd, works fine, only 40d of runtime. I'm scared to use it lmao

@Nascar1243 I haven't installed Evilnat on it yet, was planning to do it today actually
Just snagged a rare cechb00 20gb all black Japanese fat ps3 for $179.99. It has firmware 4.80, im gonna install Evilnat with Cobra to remove region lock and play burned discs. Might send it off to be delidded, as well as the other bells and whistles etc
@@bradj9251 I will note that apparently that doesn’t allow you to play dvd movies from America, you will still be locked to Japan DVD movies only.
@Nascar1243 Got my PS3 2 days ago, have Evilnat 4.91.2 Beta 14 installed with MultiMAN, webMAN & Irisman. I'm having a blast with this console. It only has 12 days total of usage and turned on a total of 92 times. Think I got pretty lucky
@ that’s very lucky to have a low use time console, congrats on the console
600$ for a repair hahaha crazy you buy 10 working ones for that price. Nice video tho
Honestly with the price of them now (which can be between $150-300) it is just better to have one that will last, this model anyways. I don’t play ps2 games and at the time I just liked the console so I figured I’d get it fixed the right way. It actually has been more reliable than some of my super slims oddly enough
So you did pay 600$ for the Fix correct?
Yes I did
@@Nascar1243 That's a lot of money. Love the video. Cheers.
Why americans call it sodering when its soldering😂
Honestly it might be my accent for that part
silent "L" I guess.

@@nateriver6225 it’s still too thick, don’t put anything that shouldn’t be there, it is fine the way it is and if you have temp issues then you either need a repaste or delid. Adding anything there will put too much force essentially making it like a bolt mod. Not ideal for long term. Best to remove it as soon as possible. not sure if you just misspoke but Burnout Paradise was on the Xbox 360. Me and my brother played it all the time and we never had a PS3.

It’s fixable if you know how to replace the GPU
Unreal video Thanks
Had mine since 2008. Worked great. Didn't turn it on for 5 years until last week and now have the YLOD. Dont know what caused this because it worked fine for years. Could sitting there without turning it on for all them years cause this?
Yes it could technically get YLOD from sitting there, now it likely won’t be from the failing rsx unless you had rsx related issues before putting it in storage. It could be a failed cap or even a failed PSU. You’d have to do syscon diagnostics to figure out what’s wrong with the console and what’s causing your YLOD.

I don’t really remember as I had it repaired a long time ago but I think some of my saves did actually get wiped but that could’ve been from when it started failing

It’s not ideal to use high ESR caps. It’s much better to use low ESR caps
