yees! A new video from Tony! Really happy to see one again, and grabbing popcorn to enjoy what I am sure is another great video. Please keep up the great work, both in filming, and in repairing stuff :)
Just some suggestions on the second PS3. When applying thermal paste after a de-lid, apply the paste to the top of the IHS of both chips first (but do not put thermal paste on top of the chip dies themselves). This allows each of the IHS to adhere to the main heatsink AND maintain an orientation that is (as close to) parallel to the surface of the heatsink as possible (the surface of the chip dies themselves will facilitate with leveling). Partially assemble the console up to where the two clamps are secured (to ensure that the IHS are pressed firmly to the heatsink). Now disassemble, and the IHS should be "glued" to the heatsink. Visually inspect the IHS to ensure that they are not tilted. Then proceed to put thermal paste onto the chip dies. Doing it the way you did on the video allows the IHS to "float" between the dies and the heatsink and opens the possibility that the IHS is not parallel to the surface of the heatsink or CPU dies. This in turn results in uneven heat transfer.
Hi there - thank you so much for taking the time to write your feedback. I did watch NSC's videos and indeed it explains the same procedure. Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for this series of videos which inspired me to try and fix some PS3 consoles myself. I didn't have prior experience and tools to do this but I followed your advice and got everything I needed, including several broken consoles I found on the local marketplace. ive got two ps3 fats and a og xbox in my cars trunk lol. i think ill take them all apart, and see what i can salvage if the two ps3 dont work, but the og XBOX, id love to fix and keep since i got rid of mine when i was a kid.
I have an OG Fat 60GB backwards compat that is freezing in the XMB when I scroll to games. It is 100% an RSX problem as I have already torn it down and tried to reflow it. Before I did that, it was YLOD. But I wouldn't say I fixed it, that's for sure. I wish I had a reball station I really want to get this thing working again!
Good job for reflowing it! If you watch the video I linked in my description from RIP-Felix, you'll find that it's very likely the only fix for your ps3 is to replace the RSX with a newer revision... Not for the faint of heart (that includes me lol) thanks for watching!
Of all the token removal videos I’ve watched you removed those beautifully. I’m still researching the YLOD since it’s basically just telling you there is an issue and it’s left to use to figure that issue out.
Thank you! I've seen videos where they are physically ripped off the board, they give me shivers! Check out RIP-FELIX's video linked in my description, it's pretty informative! Thanks for watching!
What’s your advice for replacing the internal hard drive? My PS3 has a 1tb HDD and I would like to replace it with a 1tb SSD. I’m just not sure which brand to buy.
I’m not an expert on the subject but if you Google ‘PS3 compatible SSD’ you should get some pointers. I see some models from crucial and Samsung. I wouldn’t invest too much on that, the PS3 is an old machine and while an SSD will improve things, I think a basic one will do 🙂 good luck!
I saw the video you're referring to after I made mine. I mentioned it in the description and in part 2. That said it looks like on this board it was actually the tokins! Rare but apparently it can happen. Thanks for watching!
I've got an backwards compatible ps3 in working state, i got the syscon error log from ps3toolset, it has multiple 1001 errros, after cleaning the console (not deliding) and spending some time on power on, the console suddenly after normal shut off, didn't even goes to stand by mode (red light). After changing 2 power cords, the light pop in! Booting the console and got YLOD! After several times of turning off and on, i dissembly it again and reassembly, the console boot up!!! I've check again the syscon and i got 3003 error! The console working normally without ylod (again). till i get it to local electronic store to change the NEC TOKIN Capacitors. Could the problem be those NEC TOKIN?
The role of Tokin's with the PS3 has been recently re-evaluated and it's now believed they're seldom the cause of issues. That said, your PS3 seems to have some power issues so maybe replacing the tokins won't hurt. Remember it's not an easy process... Good luck!
good job. I have a ps3 that plays some games and turns off like the first one in this video. Do you fix it like the first one in the video or not and how much does it cost?
Thanks. It could be anything. Does it beep three times? That’s overheating. If not, it could be really anything. It turns out that tokins are rarely the cause of a fault. Capacitors are not expensive. Tools and skills are 🙂
I'm looking into using a PC ATX Power Supply for powering my BC PS3 and to reduce the heat around that area where the internal power supply goes. I would like to know what kind of connector/cable can I use for the two rounded gold long prongs on the PS3 (CECHA01 model) motherboard if you can help. Thanks.
Hi there - I do not know if those terminals are standard or not. If you cannot find them you could solder some wires directly at the back of the motherboard. However, the APS-227 features 32A at 12V so you'd need a pretty chunky wire in order not to melt it. That is why computer boards usually have multiple pin connectors. Unless you use a pretty big wire, you're also going to have an excessive voltage drop. In short, I'm not sure you're gaining much here. Thanks for your message!
12:20 Батарейка должна быть извлечена с платы перед нагревом. Об этом нужно говорить. Я надеюсь вы это сделали перед такой работой. И желательно убирать термопрокладки тоже с чипов.
Hey Tony! I am quite late but I am doing my research on YLOD issues, and I have to say this is one of the best videos on this topic I have seen... most excellent content!! Also, that was the cleanest TOKIN removal I have ever seen!!! Do you remember the temp you pre-heated the board to??
Hey - thanks for watching! Yes, pre-heating is around 150C, my laser thermometer is very handy in measuring that. I know what you mean about the TOKIN removal, thank you! I cringe when I see videos of people literally ripping them off the boards with various tools!! :)
Nice job. But I would not delid as a preventative measure. If after cleaning and new thermal paste the temps/fan speed are too high (CFW or HEN software to check them), then I would consider delidding. Also, you can "Re-merry" a new BD using CFW tools.
I'm sorry, I really don't feel competent enough to work on someone else's PS3 I'm afraid. Also please consider the possibility that a YLOD on a backwards compatible PS3 might not be fixable - at least not long term. Sorry and thanks for watching!
They are not apparently. There has been a little breakthrough in the "Tokin" tale. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/I0UMG3iVYZI/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
They were very cool! Well, it wasn't Sony, it was the manufacturers of those ICs. nVidia and AMD had the same issue back then. From my understanding they were still refining the process unfortunately. Thanks for watching!
Idk how much longer would make it a profitable venture,, but to release a legacy console would be verry cool. Kinda like those atari retro consoles. Go back and remake the original ps3 that can play ps1 and ps2 games alike! Make it smaller, make it chrome hehe Probably not possible till... 2060 haha
@@tony359 yeah now I know that you can replace that thing that is married to the motherboard. It’s kind of annoying because I thought they didn’t do it on the PS3 but that’s where they started it.
Had same problem, and just decided to heat those tokkins up with a heat gun at around 250 degrees very carefully for about a minute, and it did the trick !!! 🎉🎉
I hope I am mistaken and your PS3 can live a long life but that usually "fixes" the RSX graphic chip which is known for failing. The Tokins were probably called guilty too many times - though I am told that on this very PS3 on this video, it was actually the Tokins :) Thanks for watching and congrats!
The “heat trick” doesn’t work on the tokens, they simply don’t. All you did was heat up another component that was broken (likely the RSX) that the heat trick works on. Your system will break again in the future and you gotta deal with the real issue.
It’s a very nice Dell monitor, 27”, all analogue inputs available. But there’s a fault on the flat cable connecting the panel to the electronics. I tried fixing it but I could not and any deeper attempt would likely write off the monitor (those flat cables are not designed to be removed or touched). So I moved it to the workshop 🙂 It started with one line, disappearing when warm. Now it’s a whole bunch of them. If I twist the frame, manually, they change size 🙂
You should change the tokins of cpu too on the first one, because they could fail in the future, nec tokins are pretty awful. I use Mortal Kombat 9 or Komplete to stress consoles. It has a watch mode if you leave it on the title screen.
The Tokins have been mainly "absolved" by their sins - check RIP_Felix's video linked in the description. It turned out that the issue with the RSX is the RSX and - usually - not the tokins. Now, for a coincidence, on this PS3 it seems that the issue WAS the tokins as it has been sold with a warranty and it hasn't come back :) So it's a bit unclear :) Thanks for watching!
The Syscon is on the PS3. You need a USB serial adaptor for your computer and then some wires which you'll have to carefully solder on the PS3 motherboard. I recommend this video for a tutorial: th-cam.com/video/ZvqJQVd5pBY/w-d-xo.html If the console still boots, you can check syscon logs with a custom firmware, no need to open the PS3. Thanks for watching!
Scraping away the solder mask to put those capacitors on seems like a waste. Why not just solder them to their pads and run a bridge wire made from some old through-hole resistor legs across the negative terminals instead and the exposed pad? This is elegant enough, and also makes it easier to repair in the future when these ones also need to inevitably be replaced.
Well, it only takes a few seconds to remove the solder mark. Tantalum caps are not electrolytics, they shouldn't fail over time - and even the Tokins don't normally fail, it's been determined that they are rarely the cause of the YLOD! Thanks for watching!
@@tony359 All capacitors fail over time. I work on retro computers all the time and tantalum caps are known to explode when they get old enough. If you've ever worked on an old IBM 5150, you know that you have to check for shorts on the motherboard power plug and be prepared for the pop of exploding tantalum capacitors when you turn it on for the first time. Vishay and Kemet even provide MTBF calculators, and assuming the PS5 runs at 105C for 2000 hours, those caps WILL degrade and some may fail. Nothing lasts forever.
@@Null_Experis2000 hours is for electrolytics and at 100% rated voltage and temperature. For every 10C cooler they run from rates, life doubles. There are calculators online, It’s normal for electrolytics to get 20+ years out of them unless running hot. ‘Droplet’ Tantalum’s on old IBM fail because they absorb humidity. Those machines are usually improperly stored and seldom used and that can happen. The tantalum you see on the video are a different type, I’ve never encountered a shorted or broken one. I mean, anything can happen but those have the same chances of failing than a resistor or a diode 🙂
I have already! I left a comment on the description. Those videos are amazing. Part 2 will mention them so people don’t get misled by my ‘fixing’. Well, let’s take my ‘repair’ as having fun with the PS3 then 🙂
I'm afraid I'm not an expert when it comes to that. Tokins have recently been "partly discharged" of their sins though so I'm not sure. Thanks for watching!
Hey I saw this video and I'm amazed at your skill and I'd like to get advice reference my PS3 is it possible to mail it to u for repairs from the Caribbean
Hey thanks for your comment! I'm not such and expert in PS3 repairs and to be fair it's proven to be a difficult task, see @rip-felix video in the description. But thanks for the offer, appreciated!
If your update failed, you might need to wipe the HDD and reinstall the firmware from a USB stick. That will wipe your account though. Take a look here: www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/34824/I+am+getting+error+code+(8002F147)+on+my+PS3
The ones I got from Aliexpress turned out not to be so great so I don’t know I’m afraid. Well, if you could get them from a reputable electronics seller, that would be great.
No unfortunately, fixing a YLOD PS3 will likely require a new RSX. The toking thing turned out to be more a fairy tale than other. Good luck with that!
Thanks, I think I read about that. I guess the plan would be to acquire a MB with a faulty RSX and replace Cell, Syscon and NAND/NOR. One day, maybe :) Thanks for watching!
@@tony359 oh also for replacing BD Drives, all phats require a remarry, which can be done in Factory Service Mode. use CFW to enter FSM and remarry the drive. slims do not need remarrying.

The Slim and Super Slim models never gave me any problems either. My first PS3 I played on was a Slim but the Super Slim was the first console I ever owned and only one of two I ever purchased for myself (the other a disc version PS5) since my PS4 Slim was bought for me as a birthday present, 6 years strong for that one. I’m ready to get a console collection for my living room with getting a PS4 (1 TB Slim) and PS3 (I’m aiming for the 320 GB Slim) and then for my bedroom a digital PS5. So far it’s disc version PS5 for the living room and PS4 Slim (500 GB) for my room.

i used a broken board to try learn how to delid and i scratched the chip lol. anyways i then tried my luck on a working board. delid without any damage to the chips.......... and the wifi/BT stopped working haha
What kind of a sollution you used during delidding? Was something oil based? I delidded one of my ps3 and ... jammed the cpu. And i have to delid my other because it's reaching 80+ temps
It was just a little of oil to help. I don't think it makes a massive difference. What you need is a sharp tool and a steady hand. A drop of oil might help but I don't think it's critical. Good luck and thanks for watching!
To answer your initial question: is it because you really like the movie Chappie? Oh, never mind. It is just because they're broken. That was my second guess.
I watched "Chappie" a long time ago, I am now very curious of what the reference is with my into! :) Of course, we don't want them if they're not broken! Thanks for watching!

Nice video! BUT VERY DANGER if you do this: 25:40 you can break the vram chips! The chance here to break the vram chips is 50:50 on newer PS3's like the CECH-20XX,25xx,30xx etc. It's like russian roulette, it can go good, but it can go very bad! Check: abload.de/image_mobile.php?img=chiprambrokenheatc.jpg On the old fat ladys the chance to break the vram chips is not that high, because there the thermal glue is different. But people's already break them also on the backwards fat lady's. So just take care! Best Regards -> NSC ✌️

ive got two ps3 fats and a og xbox in my cars trunk lol. i think ill take them all apart, and see what i can salvage if the two ps3 dont work, but the og XBOX, id love to fix and keep since i got rid of mine when i was a kid.
I hope you can get one working! Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much!
weren’t the TOKINS discarded as the culprit?
I saw the video you're referring to after I made mine. I mentioned it in the description and in part 2.
That said it looks like on this board it was actually the tokins! Rare but apparently it can happen. Thanks for watching!
Amazing content!

Yes I totally forgot about the battery, I realised afterwards! Good point about pads too.
I have no one locally that will or can repair my YLOD ps3 backwards model, is there any chance you guys can? 😭😭😭 🙏
I'm sorry, I really don't feel competent enough to work on someone else's PS3 I'm afraid. Also please consider the possibility that a YLOD on a backwards compatible PS3 might not be fixable - at least not long term. Sorry and thanks for watching!
Why have you not replaced all the nec capacitors? They are prone to failure...
They are not apparently. There has been a little breakthrough in the "Tokin" tale. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/I0UMG3iVYZI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for watching!
Sony really dropped the ball on the reliability of these. I hate it. These are the best looking ps3 models in my opinion.
Make it smaller, make it chrome hehe
Probably not possible till... 2060 haha
I don’t know exactly what your situation worse I just know that on my PS3 slim I’ve changed out the disk Drive and it still works
Well, not every fault is the same! I'm happy you just needed a new HDD on your console!
@@tony359 yeah now I know that you can replace that thing that is married to the motherboard. It’s kind of annoying because I thought they didn’t do it on the PS3 but that’s where they started it.

Use a "fine fishing line" to slide (floss) under the heat sink of the CPU in order to separate the silicon seal.
Ehm.... No! :) th-cam.com/video/nXaH3crzauM/w-d-xo.html
That didn't work well - at least for me! Thanks for watching!
Any videos on fixing USB ports on ps3 motherboard? All my 4 USBs suddenly stopped working at once, so I cannot charge or use anything on them 🤔
No unfortunately - schematics for the PS3 are available, it might be just a fuse. Do you have 5V there?
Hi sir what is the value of capacitor volts and caacitance
You need to check on yours, if you google the code it will tell you what they are.
The Tokins were probably called guilty too many times - though I am told that on this very PS3 on this video, it was actually the Tokins :)
Thanks for watching and congrats!
The “heat trick” doesn’t work on the tokens, they simply don’t. All you did was heat up another component that was broken (likely the RSX) that the heat trick works on. Your system will break again in the future and you gotta deal with the real issue.
What's up with your tv ? Why does it have that line on the right hand side ?
It’s a very nice Dell monitor, 27”, all analogue inputs available. But there’s a fault on the flat cable connecting the panel to the electronics. I tried fixing it but I could not and any deeper attempt would likely write off the monitor (those flat cables are not designed to be removed or touched). So I moved it to the workshop 🙂
It started with one line, disappearing when warm. Now it’s a whole bunch of them. If I twist the frame, manually, they change size 🙂
Awesome upload , still refurbishing my ps3 , I still want a backwards compatibility
They show up in my area every now and then, often for very little! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Now, for a coincidence, on this PS3 it seems that the issue WAS the tokins as it has been sold with a warranty and it hasn't come back :)
So it's a bit unclear :) Thanks for watching!
is it sad I know thats a hl01 model just by looking at the board
Why sad, I guess it's normal if you're familiar with the system! :)
i had a CECHA01 backwards compatible ps3 i got from ebay for way too much before that unfortunately died of the YLOD after a while
Awwww, unfortunately those old ones are more or less all doomed because of the RSX chip… thanks for watching!
I love your work 🥳🥳
Congrats! And more videos plizzz ;)
Thank you!
What cables do I need to connect the Syscon module to the ps3?
The Syscon is on the PS3. You need a USB serial adaptor for your computer and then some wires which you'll have to carefully solder on the PS3 motherboard. I recommend this video for a tutorial: th-cam.com/video/ZvqJQVd5pBY/w-d-xo.html
If the console still boots, you can check syscon logs with a custom firmware, no need to open the PS3.
Thanks for watching!
Do you think you could fix my ps3 ? It’s a fat and it has the same problem
My success rate with PS3 is very low :)
I recommend watching Ripfelix video on the Syscon and Cap Ps3 stuff
I have already! I left a comment on the description. Those videos are amazing. Part 2 will mention them so people don’t get misled by my ‘fixing’. Well, let’s take my ‘repair’ as having fun with the PS3 then 🙂

you cant replace the CELL on ANY ps3, they are married to SYSCON and NAND/NOR. if you have those chips WITH the replacement CELL, it can be repaired.

The Slim and Super Slim models never gave me any problems either.
