1:10:17 This is probably one of the most terrifying Codec calls for me next to the ones at the end of the game. The first time you listen to it, it seems like a simple background check that gives Emma's character more depth. But then you get to the end of the game and it is revealed that you've been talking to GW the entire time, a neural A.I that is incredibly advanced and has been designed with the single goal of global dominion, capable of accessing computer networks across the entire freaking planet. And yet it only uses a *fraction* of it's power to pull Emma's entire history, even the incident with her father and Otacon, and the only thing it is unable to ascertain is why Otacon left afterwards (since the reason was his alone). Now imagine the fact that this A.I has most likely already processed billions upon billions of people's personal information with ease like Emma's (who is an expert hacker and computer scientist that is more than capable of covering her tracks). Scary thought. The writing in this game is phenomenal to this day.
It's crazy how much the ai lied about everything related to the big shell through Raiden's entire role but Raiden never really catches on, then when he brings it up to pliskin he's like wth are you talking about lol
1:41 This was written TWENTY YEARS ago...sometimes is hard to believe how ahead of its time MGS2 was, that been the reason why so many people disliked it back when it came out.
@@nillynush4899 no, not at all. That refers to the amplification of certain information after the party affected by the information tries to suppress it via legal means.
I totally forgot that you could still contact Otacon in the final fights, where you lose basically all the support you had up to that point. It feels nice on Raiden's part, really. Otacon is a true keeper, and a good friend.
he might have thought that before he knew he was a clone. But then again he retired from Foxhound in 1995 and moved to Alaska and lived off the grid. Not off the grid enough to prevent Campbell from finding him during the Shadow Moses incident.
Snake I am not to worried about as yeah he probably didn’t care to much prior to Shadow Moses. But what about other people that knew of Big Boss and how he looked. Of course I expect a La li lu le lo answer to appear below this but still. How much Control did the patriots have in that regard? Or it’s just that once again Hideo thought that would be cool and explanations be damned.
@@Onmysheet he was President during the Shadow Moses incident. Snake had retired and lived in the middle of nowhere and came out of retirement for Shadow Moses.
I'm mgs4 he uses it because his exoskeleton uses it as it's power but in mgs2, he only uses it for nano machines and swaps it back after the mission is over :/
@@reloadpsi Raiden never gets his blood back, since just a bit after MGS2 and basically having PTSD again, he manages to save Sunny, but ends up getting caught on Area 51 where he undergoes his fully cyborg transformation.
@@reloadpsi I mean hopefully their worlds biology still works so his body would replace the old nanomachine blood with newly produced blood over time, naturally.
1:17:04 I wonder what pillow talk between Snake and Otacon is like if Otacon's reaction to Snake saying that about someone is "yeah, that's how he is, it's fine, don't worry about it".
Man, I forgot how much world/character building these calls had. Really helps flesh the whole game out with good or at least passable explanations por things. Like Snake explaining why he chose Iroquois Pliskin, the hints about the Simulation etc. And...damn, Stillman (44:56). Also, Nastasha's been mentioned! She wasn't completely forgotten! 1:08:16
Don't forget there's a whole book written by Nastasha that you can read in the game. (You go to the Special menu, select previous operations, and scroll all the way through the pages of the books to make the next one appear. Hers will appear last. It's actually a fascinating read as it gives you a much better look at all the shady stuff that's going down that you only hear bits of during MGS1.)
I don't know if it was just the order these were edited in, but I love how the AI has to wait until someone else tells you about someone before Rosemary calls back and regurgitates basically the exact same information back to you, as if JD was just listening to your other conversations and gathering data that way, then providing "context" for that information, cutting parts of the conversation that don't fit their narrative.
I can't believe this game came out 20 years ago. Emma discussing the use of battlefield AI for high level decision making that is just entering service now. What a great game.
Kinda funny how the Colonel tells Raiden to trust a strange ninja when it wants to help but when Pliskin also tries to help Colonel tells Raiden not to trust him. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Because the ninja is a part of the simulation. If you look closely at this game and MGS1 this game is meant to mirror all the circumstances and events of MGS1 because Raiden has been VR training to be like Solid Snake and they needed to test to see if that training worked. Also Raiden and Solidus have a similar relationship to Snake and Big Boss
19:11 Rose says "The first floor is its substation." Strut B only has one floor. Makes me think that maybe they originally made it multiple floors but it got scrapped.
I love when you ring colonel about a certain item in the big shell and he's just like "ignore it". Just little details to foreshadow the secret of the big shell
I also think it's quite funny that in mgs 2 ID-controlled guns seem to be a minor side effect and in mgs 4 the subject is suddenly all over the place and does actually matter much more 😄. Should have been a much bigger thing in part 2 imho
@@fragmovie6282 it should've came off as fishy to Raiden and his crew right off the bat that Raiden was able to fire Snake's guns. The SEALs all had ID locked weapons but Raiden was able to shoot Snake's M4 AND his SOCOM.

1:02:26 Finally!!! After all these years, an explanation for those American voiced Alert Mode soldiers that just show up right out of nowhere for that very brief period inbetween Meeting Ames and the Harrier Boss.

Yo George my man, I hope you have all these videos archived in case the content/copyright police try to take you down for some stupid arbitrary reason, you're literally the only channel that uploads everything and anything relating to the MGS series as good as you do.. And people thought I was an MG fanboy.. Much props!
It's interesting how optional Codec conversations in MGS2 actually reveals details that were further brought into focus with MGS4 and later games. I wonder if they were actually planning ahead by this point or if they decided to revisit some of the old details when making the later games.
After each game Kojima wasn't going to make another, but eventually did. That's why in MGS1 you don't get any subtle hints from MGS3. Like Ocelot showing no recollection when meeting Snake, seeing as he looks the spit of Big Boss, who both were close during battle.
16:40 Reminds me of that guy in Torchwood who would always find what they were looking for in the phone book while their boss was ordering detailed traces and searches.
So the Arsenal Tengu soldiers basically are the same as the Haven Trooper frog soldiers in MGS4 they both even use the P90 Submachinegun and they have the same amplified artificial muscles that increase their agility. The only noticeableble difference in gane between an Arsenal Tengu and a Haventrooper is basically male and female. But as far as the weapons and attack patterns go it looks like the AI for them in game was set to the same algorithm.
How is it that even with the codecs that I don't understand a single thing about like the descriptions of weapons and some objects, I still get pulled in and listen to the codecs?! Metal Gear Solid really knows how to pull your attention!
It didn't occur to me until watching this that the crew you see lying around the ship aren't Marines, but civilian crew members running the ship. That's why otacon says it only takes 18 people to take it over. The marines are only down below with the metal gear.
You can tell something is subtly off about the Colonel from the very beginning of the Plant chapter; he's colder and more monotone than Roy Campbell is in MGS1.
no other game developer can match or surpass kojima's talent and his creativity. the amount of conversations and easter eggs you find in the metal gear games is amazing.
It wasn't all Kojima. The other guy wrote all the optional codec calls whilst Kojima did the story based mandatory calls and cutscenes. Kojima can't help himself taking all the credit when he's not that good when he's on his own. Look at the decline in codec calls in MGS4.
@@Onmysheet here's a question- do you actively see Kojima taking all the credit? No, really, like in interviews and stuff. He's not sitting going "Yes yes it was me all me I came up with everything by myself." No dude- he openly credits his teams, any co-writers are listed in the credits; he himself has not taken all the credit, and it doesn't take long to research that lmao
Played this game 20 years ago when I was in the 2nd grade. Blows my mind about how much of this dialogue I never knew existed. Also crazy is that how much of the game some of these conversations actually reveal.
1:12 Holy shit! I didn’t know there were hints of Arsenal Gear and The Patriots in the Tanker chapter. I haven’t played this game in years and yet I discover something new about it!
I've played this game so many times, and have not heard even a tenth of these conversations before. It's my least favorite of the series, but I do love the level of detail the game had. I was also pretty disappointed when MGS 4 cut out that character dynamic.
@@xXxChAmPoChOpxXx I can tell by the "Eu" that you're saying something's good at least. Looked at it in Google translate, that looks like it's similar to "eucharist"
I knew the whole time campbell was fake.he just sounded off, always saying VR,he never said that in mgs1,plus snake saved his daughter,he was snake friend.he wouldn't of all of a sudden bad mouth him
Yep, he didn’t feel like an actual human being most of the time. Totally robotic responses without any humor etc. were cold and unsettling right from the start
1:27:31 - "I dont wan't to do this..." 1:27:34 - * Choking * 1:27:36 - " Please D-Don't..." I swear to god this would seem even more sexual out of context
I couldn't explain exactly how, but this particular game still seems futuristic to me. As in, it's perennially a next gen game. I think it's the quality of the codec calls vs MGS1. The sound is still crisp, the avatars speak along with the text as opposed to static images with flapping jaws. Everything seems seamless, if you like. I watch this, and I'm still engrossed and in awe, nearly twenty years later.
I think it's pretty funny that the Kasatka has been featured in MGS2, Battlefield, Arma, and plenty of other games yet it's only just now close to actually entering service
Now it's glaringly obvious, but media has been doing that for a lot longer than MGS has been around. That sorta crap has been going on in America since the 20's, and then really took off when they started using Cold War propaganda techniques.
That goes back further then the 20's no? I remember propaganda being talked about with the Spanish American War in school(Yeah modern public schools aren't the best but hey, can't all be BS right?).
41:36 fans kept using the term Cyborg Ninja since mgs1. So I guess Kojima made the term stick from it's popularity which is why people don't refer to them as the proper term "Powered Exoskeleton".
4:41 Crazy part about the incident Otacon mentions is that for a few months, Heathrow and all international airports in the US goes on high alert while the authorities investigated it.
This game is 20 years old yet feels like it’s 20 years in the future. That’s how ahead of it’s time in every way it is. This world is not worthy of this games presence.
If the year is 2009, and Fatman found an internet guidebook about assembling an atomic bomb, that means Fatman is probably at most 24 years of age...seems so wrong

This is probably one of the most terrifying Codec calls for me next to the ones at the end of the game.

People have been saying MGS2 was ahead of its time since almost immediately after the game came out. But its true.
I thought they hated it cause they couldn’t play Snake for a majority of the game
I totally forgot that you could still contact Otacon in the final fights, where you lose basically all the support you had up to that point. It feels nice on Raiden's part, really. Otacon is a true keeper, and a good friend.
Man, you gotta wonder how Snake never saw the president in the news and thought "You know, he looks awfully similar to me and my dad that I killed"
he might have thought that before he knew he was a clone.
I'm mgs4 he uses it because his exoskeleton uses it as it's power but in mgs2, he only uses it for nano machines and swaps it back after the mission is over :/
@@thegingerbeerguy How could he swap it back out? The Patriots had it

Nastasha wasn’t forgotten at all by Kojima! When I was a kid I used to think that Snake was implying she was in a hospital for smoking issues!
I like how there's 2 calls of Rose congratulating Raiden followed immediately by
"STILLMAN'S DEAD"
I don't know if it was just the order these were edited in, but I love how the AI has to wait until someone else tells you about someone before Rosemary calls back and regurgitates basically the exact same information back to you, as if JD was just listening to your other conversations and gathering data that way, then providing "context" for that information, cutting parts of the conversation that don't fit their narrative.
