The way this video engages with Kurvitz is laughable and demonstrably false. He exaggerated how much he contributed to the game (that he didn’t get to finish since he was removed before the Final Cut). That’s fair enough. Everything else is just untrue. The creator really likes to brush over the fact that everyone remaining who was working on the game was exorcised. Argo apparently doesn’t know what’s happening in a studio he worked at for years? That he has personal experience in? The documentary was a massive step towards the incoming conclusion of the lawsuit between Kurvitz and ZA/UM and everyone knows that it will be used as evidence in court. I’m hardly a communist but the creator brushes over the fact that ZA/UM heads used internal company resources to create, then buy up shares in their own company to increase their share and force Kurvitz out. Congratulation on the communism critique, but capitalism doesn’t seem to be too ethical either.
On his portrayal of Kurvitz; the only people who accused Kurvitz of any wrongdoing at the heads of ZA/UM. The woman who was used as an example of him being sexist said that claims were 100% untrue. It statements released recently, ZA/UM employees are talking about studio heads who enforced crunch, who were sexist to employees (in workplace culture and organisation). So it’s quite clear that Kurvitz was used as the scapegoat for these claims, and the fact that not a single person has backed up ZA/UM’s reasons for their dismissal of Kurvitz is further proof. Tulik is an easy source of statements on these topics.
When you look at the legal pressures put on Kurvitz, the way he was treated by the company (his own shares being illegally reduced) and compare that to the actions of ZA/UM’s heads it’s insane. He wrote almost the entire lore for the world. He’s been working on this universe for over a decade. Him being short with some designers and cocky is dick behaviour, sure, but lauded artists like Tarentinon have done far worse and are universally praised. Kurvitz’s own politics have been spun to make a “dramatic irony” out of the situation that simply doesn’t exist.
The complaints that he didn’t do enough work are especially egregious when not only did he make the world but he’s clearly an eccentric sort of artist who writes slowly. Not writing 24/7 is part of most writers creative process. Was he doing as much work as other writers? Yes. That’s true not only from his contributions to the world, but in his overall word count others have attributed to him. Was he working as HARD as ever other writer? No, and while he had excuses I think he could have done more, and he has since admitted the same. A lot of his time was going into plans for a sequel set in the same world, so while he was still doing plenty of work he could’ve contributed more to the game itself.
Comparing Kurvitz and ZA/UM is comparing someone who is a bit of a dick to a group who are straight up malicious.
And the way this creator engages with communism is maddening. Every corner of the political spectrum is satirised in this game, the centre most of all. Did they miss the most famous line in the game? I paraphrase; “complaining about other communists is one of the most important parts of communism”. This creator was so terrified of having his politics changed by the game he was completely oblivious to fact that it IS a critique of its own ideology.
If you played the game as most would, Harry gets a happy (enough) ending. If HE can overcome his struggles to make his life work, the rest of the human race could very feasibly strive to create a communist world that works. Or a capitalist one. Or anything better than what we have now. The game is about change and the individual who made this video seems absolutely terrified of it.
Apologies for the excessive comment but this comment section is devoid of people willing to engage with the game and its themes. If any one of them made a piece of art, they would scowl at the thought that people would engage with it in such a lazy and misinformed way.

A thing I saw pointed out is that while you can run into people who deeply believe in communism, fascism, ultra-liberalism, etc., Harry taking up any of the political causes is something of a joke. And that makes sense: try as he might his core identity is washed up alcoholic, he doesn't genuinely seem to feel for any of these things, so instead he takes up this persona of what he thinks the ideal communist, fascist, ultra-liberal is.
A funny thing I will note, though, is that despite all this *he is super effective.* In just five to ten days he solves just about ever facet of a murder, and that's with using his discretion as he'd like to deal with everything surrounding it. The guy who got in his feelings going off about an ice-cop-hat-fuck-show in front of some poor drugged out girl on the sea ice is, unironically, one of the best detectives the RCM could have.

For me the game was mostly on how we try to rationalize something as simple as a lovebreak with something so insanely massive as a political ideology. In the mind of Harry, the ideology is simply the answer to why his girl dumped him:
      -Liberalism: He was poor
-Moralism: He didn't value her opinions
-Communist: He didn't care about helping others beyond just arresting criminals
      -Fascist: He was puny

He could never fully support socialists because cops main purpose is to defend the property rights of the ruling class and he could never fully support capitalists because he benefits from socialist government policies like pay scales and healthcare (if cops in DE are anything like cops in the US), that capitalists want to abolish.

This why I feel the "theist" vs "atheist" debate is missing the real issue with religion. You can leave a religion and still maintain spiritual beliefs. But instead people discard their beliefs, yet are bound to what is functional a religion.

    • @Armameteus
      @Armameteus 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +66

@@radiokunio3738 It's the difference between spirituality and organized religion; one can still hold spiritual beliefs, but the moment you get wrapped up in an organized religion based around those beliefs, it (and those that are part of it) turns zealous and dogmatic. It's not "theism vs. atheism" - as in belief vs. non-belief - but "theism vs. religion vs. atheism" - as in belief vs. _organized_ belief vs. non-theistic belief.
Simply put: a theist can believe without religion, and an atheist can hold beliefs without gods, but religion _cannot_ exist without its followers, which requires their belief in itself. Religion is a co-opting of belief, and it applies to _all_ forms of belief, be it theistic (a belief in gods/spirits/supernatural concepts, etc.) or atheistic (a belief in idols/philosophies/forms of government, etc.). Communism, by its very nature, is a textbook religion; a belief in its system of governance, for its own sake, to the exclusion of all other systems, in spite of its diametric opposition to reality and human nature.

On my playthrough of the game, I played a sober cop who was logically gifted. It was very fun to see Harry get his life back together and solve the case using his intellegence to solve the case.
It was funny to see Harry's knowledge on random facts actually hampering the case in some cases. Very often, Encyclopedia gives actively not useful facts and rhetoric and drama making stuff up to support an ideology or to make things more dramatic than they actually were. I like that the skills act as additional party members. The more you level up the skills, the more they get to interact with your choices. I really think that more rpg games should make this the standard.
It makes it so that skills add to the experience and give you more information whilst also occasionally throwing a wrench into things for flavor. Its a really good game. Even if some of the creators themselves are dumb or hold bad ideas.

I myself don't run in deeply political groups, so I came pretty fresh into Disco Elysium knowing it was just very well written, and by the end I didn't get the impression it was advocating for communism.
But if you hang around the 4Chan crowd, as the guy on this video stated, all you'll hear is about how Disco Elysium is commie propaganda made by communists. . . Then, as you can see with this video, he played the game and saw, like you and I, it was kinda just authentic even in it's outlandishness.

You see, where the Communards believe they can will a better world into being, the Moralists are cowards who talk a lot about a better world but don't do anything to change the status quo, and the Ultraliberals don't care and openly stripmine society, the idea of the Fascist path is this: it's over.
Once Revachol was great and glorious and perfect, but that world died. It died a long time ago, and then there was the horrors of the revolution, followed the humiliation of the Coalition, and now the slow descent in its present day.
There is no fertile ground for that world to suddenly spring back into being - by now it's been crushed under the weight of history, barely alive in living memory.
This is why the Fascist Thought doesn't give you bonuses when you say fascist things, and hurts you instead. The actual bonus is better stat modifiers when you drink heavily. Don't fool yourself. That world is over. Drink to help yourself deal with reality, if you can't accept it sober.
In the political vision quests introduced in the later update, the fascist one is about Harry's quest to "Turn Back Time".
Again, this path is a huge reflection of how Harry can't deal with the loss of his ex-wife, and this quest pulls no punches.
At one point you sit down with Rene and ask about how to go back to the past and save everything - defeat the Communards, restore the Monarchy, win the girl.
He flies off the handle and lays into you. The says you're an idiot, a fantasist, a fool. There was a time once when that could have happened, but that was a long time ago. Maybe he could have done better, maybe people should have done more, maybe they just needed to be a bit luckier, but none of that matters now. It's over. It's been over for a long, long time. Deal with it. You can't turn back the clock, you can't fix what was, and it's never going to be like it used to.
After that, and a few conversations with some other fellows you get the opportunity to shave your face and gain a weird grin, but that's all secondary in my opinion.
This path, although it's not very youtube friendly at times, is probably the healthiest path for Harry to go down, as it makes him deal with the fact that It's Over.
Yeah, it's all a bit fucked up because Harry is a collection of character defects masquerading as a human being, but that's to be expected.
Anyway, that's my piece, as there's not much information about the Fascist playthrough out there, and I found it surprisingly sophisticated at times, though it is very heavy handed at parts saying that "racism bad", overall it's at least an interesting depiction to contrast with the rest.
Also, I'm an unabashed Jean Vicquemare apologist. Harry is a drunk, junkie piece of shit that spends more time looking into defunct game companies than actually solving the murder. You've been like this for years and he's had enough of your shit so when you tell him to fuck off he finally leaves, only to turn up the next day to see if you're in as bad a shape as he's heard, and from then he stays nearby and keeps his eyes on you. When you're out on the ice with Acele, a failed Authority check reveals that Jean is watching you from the shore with binoculars. Also you can talk to him in Whirling-in-Rags about development on the case and he'll give you small guidance and restore your mental health bar. And although he leaves before you find Ruby, (but leaves the shrink behind to observe you) and so misses the tribunal, afterwards when he hears you are awake, the heads over except you've already headed to the island.
Jean Vicquemare propaganda aside, good video even if it dwelled a bit too much on the communist stuff for my liking, but I guess some people have to be beaten over the head with the message before they get it.

I had the same experience about what you said. I watched the video after not playing the game ever.
I tried to play it a few years ago but the whole lucky random numbers made me angry.
This time I let it go, played a full game and thought about most of the things this video speaks and what you said. It was too funny when the fascism path opened, it was a total 'bad' path. They truly put it on your face that it was bad...
But the 'fascists' you meet, are very broken and mostly sad people. They don't say it aloud and just like referred in your writing, they know it's over.
It's the melancholy of the past... And I am 100% onto what you said about Harry's partner. Maybe Harry does a full 180 of his life after the game, but until then, he wasn't worth it.

"He knows he is a target. He knows Moralintern is watching him"
Not entirely true. If you try to rat out Klaasje to the Sunday Friend but packpedal in the final moment and say that Evrart needs to be arrested, the Sunday Friend will reveal that Moralintern can't do anything about him. Moreover it is revealed that Claire travels to Safre(which is on another isola), where he negotiates the drug trade.
    1:14:41
"Dros tried to teach him[Evrart] communist doctrine"
Not him. If you pass some passive checks you realise that it was Edgar, who visited Dros. Edgar is Evrart's brother. Unlike Evrart, who is very pragmatic in his leftism, Edgar was described as a more straightforward leftist, a social democrat with a strong Mazovian influence. With a degree in humaties studies or smth. Although it is still a possibility that Edgar is prone to ideologival sweettalk, just like Evrart with Harry. Dros also says that Edgar is much smarter than Evrart.

I loved the game when I bought it a few years back. It looked like post-Soviet Eastern Europe or what I imagine Paris looked like after the Directory were ousted by Napoleon. If only those buildings could talk...
When I found out that there were both capitalists and socialists in ZA/UM I wasn't terribly surprised; a game that goes after every ideology with that level of precision had to have experts of several ideologies working on it. It made me examine my own ideological background and really dig into how it could (or maybe would) fail if it were implemented and how it could be changed to work better. Disco Elysium is one of my favorite games, up there with the likes of Super Metroid, Sonic and Knuckles, Half-Life 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3 (the first video game I ever played). It takes something like, 'who shot this merc?' and makes it into something so much more whimsical, profound and dark.
And if you really can't stomach giving ZA/UM your money you can wait for it to go on sale (which it does quite often on Steam and GoG). Of course there are other ways involving black flags and peg legs, but I can't promote that...in the open.

The fact that the entire centrist run is about how centrist are too coward to actually take action and don't have any beliefs (And the fact that the game seems to despice them even more than fascist) kinda fucks this entire reading up.
Disco Elysium makes fun of all ideologies (Or the people who follow them instead) because this game is ultimately a satire, but is clear based in the setting, worldbuilding and the dialogues of apolitical characters that the game is left-leaning, always putting itself in the position of pro-workers, against cops, corporations, or international institutions, ultimately showing that the reason why this happens is because of them. This videogame criticizes people who follow communism mostly, for being too idealistic and self-centered to actually do something about the issues they supposedly go against, the communist route isn't about how communism is stupid and cringe, is mostly about how bad communists are at organizing due to their snobbism, it never denies the issues that communism tackles, it criticizes communists for not doing anything about it and fighting each other over nonsensical idealisms instead of being more pragmatic, with a dose of biterness and cynism because satires are suppose to ridicule.

@@sleepyguy4237 I was talking about being a centrist (Moralist), being apolitical is simply avoiding all tasks regarding politics so the game can't really make fun of it, the game mocks your ideology based on the tasks you make, so being “apolitical” in the sense of never taking sides, it would still be related to moralism, while being apolitical in the sense of completely ignoring all discussions about politics would mean you're skipping a gameplay mechanic.

    • @sleepyguy4237
      @sleepyguy4237 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Example is the task of taking an old man's sandwich, when you succeed that task the game tells you that you're a piece of shit and you're wasting time but I choose to ignore that task of taking that man's sandwich since why would I want to? Just because I don't want to be a piece of shit or join some political side doesn't mean that I am skipping gameplay.

Your posture is basically identical to Kim's one, and he's labeled as a moralist, so if you played without actively avoiding politics, you would get a moralist run.

I got to the Dross segment, and I have to say that people run. As a soldier, when we were mortared, grown men broke down into tears while we sat huddled in a bunker, people tried to run that I pulled by their collars to stay put.
War has become some sort of "game" to people. But as someone who lived through it, you do not regen health after being shot, and to relate to current kids there is no "chug jug" when you get hurt during a war conflict, you will probably die, unless someone is watching your back. And even then, you better hope they have their shit together enough to help you.

Dross stayed on a tiny little island, that he could leave at any time, in order to fight a fight that ended long ago that he couldn't actually take part in because he ran. It's a very common theme in the game, being trapped and tortured by your past but not letting it go because it's an admission. If he stops fighting on that island he has to admit to himself that he never even started fighting to begin with.

There is an anecdote I love about the lead dev of the original Deus Ex bumping into an old friend at a game-con. They go to the bar to catch up, the friend gets drunk, starts ragging on the dev for making a game full of “right wing conspiracies”, another attendee overhears and says “what do you mean, the game was lefty like nothing else”, and starts an argument with the drunk over the political messaging of the game. The dev slips away at that point, musing with chagrin that he didn’t try to make a left or right-wing game, just a world of corpo-war and characters that had different opinions and reactions to it.
That’s the real meaning of “art shouldn’t be political”: sure, it can have political themes or applicable messages, but they should never be all-encompassing, they should never be simplistic, they should never be unilateral, and they should never come at the expense of fun gameplay or fully-realized characters & story. If Deus Ex had been a story where all the answers were only found in one idealogy, it would not have become a legend, just like how if Disco Elysium had been nothing more than an ode to “The Revolution” it would have had no redeeming qualities. Games that beat you over the head with a single ideological polemic are nothing more than propaganda. They are advertisement. And no one has patience or genuine fondness for political ads. And this is why Western communists and Uber-progressives suck: they are soulless freaks who want to ruin your entertainment by making every single franchise into a brand-themed overt soapbox to proselytize their religion at the expense of being enjoyable or nuanced. And they pretend you are the one with the problem.
Do not let them get away with that garbage. Make them go bankrupt, and celebrate their failures.

I will say this about communism because I live around a lot of actual commies, in the same way that I used to be surrounded by rightoids.
They sort of admitted to my face that the ideology itself speaks of an ideal to emulate and not one to realise, because Marx never explained how a communist society looks like. I think it makes sense, somehow. Everyone had a different vision of an ideal world with different structures, and in the confusion, the ambitious ones with influence (ie: Mao and Stalin) took it all for themselves and made it all a zealot-ish religion. Now they're trying to repair the damage... At least those who live in Europe and are not brain-rotted by Murican politics.
The people I talk with are students, some of them are workers. I doubt they're capable of accomplishing anything and their supposed allies refuse to hear one word of what they say and think they're all stalinists.
    Its sad, really.

I have only recently played it and fisnihed my third and final playthrough today
1st:physical l supercop who did lots of drugs and alcohol messed up a lot and got the worst ending in the game
2nd: Intelellectual moralist and luckiest man on earth was the best detective did like everything right and won so many low skill checks in the game it was insulting
3rd: Empathetic communist cop, really imaginative, did really crazy stuff failed a lot, but I did side quests and got better. I got sober and learned all the secret lore about the pale and world and did every side quest on the game helping the community and became best friends with Kim getting the best ending and feeling satsified that it was my final playthrough
Also my take of the politics was no matter what side i picked it sucked and failed in a way but when the phasmid appears it shows that beyond the pale (figuratively and literally) its possible to discover a new way of living and to help each other that escapes the cyclical failures of the present. But then again the apocolypse is coming so who knows. 😅

Really glad to finally see a video about Disco Elysium without the Twitter Commie bias to it. I played the game a while ago and also thought despite occassional moments that feel like "All ideologies bad but communism at least MEANS WELL!", the game overall wasn't as preachy as commies like to imagine. I even remember seeing some video where a guy claimed that attempting a fascist playthrough "made him feel uncomfortable" and he had to stop(And naturally claimed that his commie playthrough made him feel totally happy XD).
One little thing I felt I should mention... maybe I misheard something, but it kinda sounds like you referred to the district the game happens in as Revachol, and treated Jamrock as separate town, while Revachol is the entire city with Jamrock and Martinaise(The name of the district game happens in) being districts in it.

how unfortunate that the Estonian creator loved it when houses were blocks and the wall decor was just black mold. nostalgia doesnt discriminate against age. the reason my grandpa had nostalgia is because his own parents traded in the black markets for cheap goods and often skipped out on their own meals.. it took him a long time to wake up to the fact that the system did not indeed make everything better (it gave him the illusion that apple jam sandwiches were brought to him thanks to communism, he was just fed good food what was to be found around)

I grew up in a post-soviet country. And disco elysium was that one game that described living in such a country very VERY well. I noticed a lot of people who criticize or praise the game don't really get it. And that's understandable, since they can't get it, they never experienced living in a post soviet hellhole. They don't understand how it feels to see once a big and very flawed country disappearing overnight, all its shaky systems built upon fear destroyed, multiple bloody revolutions everywhere, people deaths, leaving wounds on society that never heal. They never saw how everything collapses, education going to shitter, corruption spreading, populace either not caring or can't do anything. And this hell never really ends, we can only pretend it's over after 30 years, but the damage is already done. The system gave birth to multiple totalitarian shitholes with no future.
Revachol is an amazing example of such a failed state. Political activism in any form is not welcome there, you might think the establishment is on your side, but it isn't. Democracy, capitalism, communism - those are just words, silly concepts to fool simple folk like their opinions worth something. The only language that works and gets you places is money, hence corruption on every level imaginable.
I always disliked how people see Disco Elysium as some commie propaganda when it wasn't.
Now, I don't know if it was the authors' intention or wasn't, but they nailed the feeling of this dread very well, and I never felt like they say "this particular political movement works, you should follow it". And the game was honestly fun. Didn't even know their company ended up where it ended. And that's kinda sad, but also ironically fitting with the game's themes.

Living in a post-Soviet hellhole, huh? I understand that. But something about it just didn't feel right.
You're talking about a big and very flawed country disappearing overnight, with systems built on fear being destroyed, but with them - education going to shit, corruption spreading, the population either not caring or not being able to do anything...
So if something is going to go to shitter - it has to be better in the first place, right? So it was better in some ways before, while the Soviet was active.
And after that, after the crushing of the Soviet ideology, why didn't it change for good even after 40 years, if communism was the main problem for all of it?
In the end, I agree that DE didn't say which political movement is better, nor did they portray communism by any good. But I also don't think that some of the ideas of communism are bad, like free education for everyone, free medicine, stable prices and general idea of peace for everyone.

Generations who didn't know how non-communist society function, most of whom were living in fear or very high on ideology. Obviously when everything crashed and burned the absolute majority didn't know what to do hence the collapse into the dark 90s: multiple wars, revolutions, dictatorships rising, corruption e.t.c.

Played as a moralist, law jawed, cop of the apocalypse, with stats put in everything but intelligence. It was very interesting playthourgh, Harry could basically read people like a book and then open them up like a can opener despite not being book smart, was a ace shot, so good at his job he was able to save the most lives, did believe in the church's religion or at least showed due reverance (which changed the dialogue for that final dream sequence adding context to why he saw his exwife like that) and tried to stop the Pale from growing, only to step back because he had a job to do, treated people fairly despite his utter hatred of commies, which left Evert up a creek without a paddle when he did everything you can to be a utter thorn in his side (Letting the Hardie Boys live is indeed the better option for that outcome) and finally despite being so alone before he was able to reconnect with the outside world, completely get off the drugs and booze, find new friends and possibly a new love interest. The game is brilliant and I do wish it would it got that expansion and sequel but sadly the vocal crazy minority that calls themselves the game's main fanbase and mistreatment of the real people who worked on the game, while that commie took all the credit saw to it that will never come to be.

I did something similar, except I went way more John Hartigan than Joe Friday. Shivers, Visual Calculus, Perception. Every character interaction was basically "just the facts, ma'am". Avoided political leanings, vices, just tried to be professional. In the end it was nice to see Kim describe the character I played as worthy of wearing the badge.
I did not realize how...delusional some of the fans are about this game until I had a convo with one. It was the "this is a communist game" position, which is entirely different than what I experienced. The game is just about morality in general, it's apparent that Kim is the voice of reason, he is very nuanced and not overtly opinionated. But that's just communists being communists I guess, they always think their beliefs transcend politics when they really don't.

The writing was fantastic and I enjoyed it a lot. Though I will admit that it took me several tries to get to the end, because I couldn't decide which stats I wanted to keep, so I kept rerolling.
Later on, when I heard that it's a commie game that's pro communism or whatnot I just thought that it was dead wrong and the people saying it have no idea what they're talking about.
Spoilers, but at the end, the last commie soldier is the most loathsome, pathetic, radicalised incel loser, who got so indoctrinated that he decided to live in a swamp for decades, hating and avoiding the world, whilst fantasizing what it would be like to live among the people he desperately wants to hate. Rene isn't a representation of fascism, he's a representation of the "old" politics - aristocracy, monarchism, etc. He is a living fossil of a time and ideology that is long gone, which is one of the reasons he's so "chill" despite his regrets. There is simply nothing left in the world for him anymore. Everything he ever believed in was gone and forgotten which brings to him some closure. He is a perfect foil to Dros in that regard. Rene fought the hardest he could for what he believed in, but even though he _won_ the war, his world still naturally passed away. Because of this, he is at peace with the result and while he doesn't agree with them, he understands why the new generation moved on and doesn't hold a grudge. Meanwhile Dros didn't fight and instead ran away like a coward during his first and only battle, the same kind of behavior he was supposed to prevent in his soldiers. He then spent 40 years stewing in resentment, of himself for his cowardice, and of the world for moving on while he could not.
