You can apply epoxy over properly clean surfaces. Epoxy has the corrosion resistant properties and it adheres extremely well. It sticks good to the substrate and other coatings stick to it good as well.

@dills2403 epoxy is much better for corrosion resistance and adhesion. Lacquer has been around for a long time. It is basically used for filling. However, it has a tendency to shrink after applied, which may result in scratches where your body work was performed. two part primers are much better.

@dills2403 If you are using lacquer primer over metal, then it may not adhere well. You need to use epoxy or self etching primer over metal. However, if you are priming over a painted surface, you should not have a chipping problem.
As far as the window, every brand is going to vary. With the brand that I use, you can top coat after 30 minutes and no longer than 72 hours.

@surf403 You do not have to put your top coat, just your next coating. You can use epoxy on your bare metal and spray primer surfacer on top of that. Then you can sand with not time limit. Once sanded you can apply more primer surfacer if needed or top coat. Does this help? Thanks for watching. Check out CollisionBlast(dot)com/Coupons for discounted supplies.

It is alway nice to include the product info of what you are using. Even though they may not be able to afford it, or have a "Platinum PPG" dealer in town to purchase Shop Line.

@Pendemic Epoxy primer is my preferred method, but it is not the only way. You can use etch primer, it bites to the metal and provides corrosion protection as well. If you are going to spray small areas etching primer in a spray can will work fine. Let me know if you have any other question. Thanks for watching!

No, most epoxies have a window. This is the time you have where the epoxy will provide a chemical bond. After this window, the epoxy loses its chemical bond and you must provide a mechanical bond. Just a light scuff will do. With the epoxy I use, I have 72 hours to spray top coat. After 72 hours, I will need to lightly scuff with a red scuff pad before applying top coat. So if it set for a few months, I would scuff before top coating. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have questio

@stevetags1 Sure, you should be able to get one of those lids and any auto paint supply store. Ask them for a agitation lid. They are not that expensive. Thanks for watching.

@ButlerCollision Thanks. I'm just looking for the best protection against the rust coming back that I can. So the self-etch primer should do the job, right?
And what process should I use exactly?
    Sand blast,
Apply self-etch primer (should I be scuffing the metal befroe doing this?),
    Scuff self-etch primer (??),
Apply body filler (scuff this too??),
    Apply more primer (scuff??),
    Paint,
    Clear

Hi I plan on sand blasting some rust spots on my car. What would you recommend doing after that? Applying epoxy primer? Do they sell epoxy primer in spray cans or would I have to mix it and spray it on with a gun? I bought self-etching primer but now I see that it's not the right thing to use.

i've come to the point where i am confused with all the different types of primer, i'm working on painting the whole front end of my car which is a single stage white toyota, and planning on sticking with some urethane single stage paint. however the panels i am painting have factory paint (one is base/clear other is single stage. both parts will have some bare metal showing so i'm stuck on what primer to get, hoping i can get away with just one type of primer..please enlighten me! thanks!

how does reducer play into epoxy paint mixing?

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Adam, sorry you didn't get a timely answer, but epoxy mixed according to the TDS / SDS (Technical Data Sheet - Service Data Sheet) does rule. 4 years ago, there are less than half of the epoxies as available today in 2022, November. But 2:1 or 1:1 is common. Adding a high quality urethane reducer of the correct temp range, reduces mil thickness but sprays much smoother. Most starting use epoxy on the bare clean frame or panel protects it from moisture in the air, two coats = rain and temp changes that meet the dew point. Adding the urethane up to 10% is an excellent sealer to make the color paint stick better, can be colored by adding pigments sold at a paint shop. Never add just paint as dryers, enamel resins can have reactions. But if colored and chipped by rock, it is not as noticeable. Can have base coat/clear or solid colors called "Single Stage" sprayed on top. Clear can be sprayed on single stage as it simply add extra layer of protect, but always check the TDS sheets again if allowed. Chemistry changes fast and alway note & take photos of cans, air pressure, tip size, brand & color number in case of future repair. Ads value to car if selling as well so a fender bender can be matched & blended.

Why is it that you have to put your top coat on within 72 hours?? Im looking to be able to cover bare metal, and then sand and do more body work and then primer again and then maybe some slick sand, sand again, then a top coat. Help!!!
