What Is The BEST Wheel/Tire Combo For The 3RD Gen Toyota Tacoma?

  • What is the best wheel and tire for the 3rd generation toyota tacoma!! In today's video I talk about the best wheel and tire for the 3rd generation toyota tacoma. This is a question that I see almost everyday from tacoma owners on a facebook page that I am apart of. Since I am on my second set and have learned quite a lot about this, I figured I make a video on what I have done and hopefully this will help you out on picking out your next set! With both of my setups, I have had virtually no rubbing, mostly offroad, but I think these have been great setups without having to do any trimming. The specs I talked about were for the Nitto Ridge Grapplers, so if you do want other tires, use these measurements to help you on that along with the wheel specs. If you are familiar with the channel we like to keep things looking as if it could have been stock, or be able to put things back to stock if needed, so with these setups, they are mild in the stance, but at the same time plenty of clearance for daily driving and going offroad! Let me know if you have any other questions about a new setup!

    Another great video. Thank you. After an obsessive amount of research, I went with a 3”/2” lift, then installed Ridge Grapplers 285/70/R17, 9” wide Mayhem wheels with -10mm offset. The tires are 6-ply, C-rated, thus saving weight. E rating is overkill for my needs. I’m happy to report that I have zero rubbing on the cab mount at full stuff. I did have to trim a few centimeters of plastic on the front outside corner of the wheel well. Very easy fix with the Dremel and a bit of heat gun. I could not be happier with how it turned out!

      I did cover all of that! Depends on the cutting you want to do. I had about a 4'' lift up front/3.5'' in the rear and in the end, had 34x12.5 tires with zero rubbing after cutting and new alignments.
      With just the lift and zero cutting, a 33x11 could fit with a wheel having a 0 offset.
      My first setup I believe was 32x11 with an 18x9 0 offset and I barely had rubbing and that only happened in reverse full lock. Hope that helps too.

    I love 17 inch by 8.5 inch with no offset which is the perfect wheel size for all around daily driving and off road ! There's a lot of data behind this size wheel plus saves a lot of gas vs a 9 inch or 10 inch. Without a lift I love a 265x70 tire with that setup as well !

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's not going to be a significant mpg difference between the wheel being wider. The wider the tire possibly the heavier it is. Where are you seeing this information? We are talking a few pounds of a difference. Obviously stock tires will differ from larger ones of course. But as long as you love your setup that's all that matters man! Every has a style and look they are going for!

    • @nightbreed141
      @nightbreed141 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed Yeah I get it man everyone will choose whatever they want but your statement of not wasting more gas or not being a big difference is a contradiction on your part.its basic science there's plenty of data to support my claims. This is the main reason why many vehicle manufacturers go with 17 inch wheels because of those reasons that I stated. The new Ford raptor will also be coming in stock with 17 inch by 8.5 with huge tires ! Once you go bigger than 17 inch wheels then you sacrifice a lot in many aspects including performance...

My tires are almost 33x11.5, so I wouldn't go bigger than that and you should be ok. I'm debating on getting another alignment done with my SPC UCA's because they have the adjustability to help and I haven't seen any videos to explain how much better they can help with rubbing.

I’m going back n forth between the nitto ridge grappler and the maxxis razr 810. Im waiting for the level kit to arrive. Haven’t purchased wheels or tires yet. Not sure why someone told you the skid plate mount would be trimmed, that's not even close! But my current setup, I'm running 285/70/19, 17x9 0 offset and they barely rub, offroad I could hear it some on sharp turns, sometimes in reverse on the pavement if it's not level, but if you don't mind slight rubbing here and there. I added 1.25' wheel spacers and had to do the CMC and push in the fenders some, I still rub though. You might just have to take a heat gun and push in the fender behind the tire like I did.

However if you don’t mind some minor rubbing or minor trimming of your plastic fender skirts you can fit 275/70/17 gaining 10mm from stock width and height gain of 0.55” thus a 32.16” tire. Hey Bud. Thanks for the video. Looking at a 21 Tacoma SR.
    Aftermarket wheels 18x9 0 offset with 5" backspacing. Any recommendations on 3" lift kits and decent tires? Likely won't be offroading at all. Appreciate the video and the insights here

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My first setup was 18x9 +10 and I ran a 33x12.5'' Nitto Ridge Grappler! Had slight slight rubbing, but that was a beefy setup for the tire. I'm on my third set of the Ridge's and love them, very quiet on road tire with an aggressive look for an "all terrain" tire. But the 285's I had after that didn't rub and were great for daily driving. And I love my OME lift. I went with the stiffer route with coils for the bumpers and all, but they offer a softer suspension setup which most likely will be like stock or very similar.

    What’s the biggest tire you can fit on the factory wheel on the 3rd gen Tacoma? Regardless of rubbing and what lift you should have, I just want to know the biggest size tire to fit on the factory 16in wheel...

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't want rubbing you'd need to stick to either slightly taller or slightly wider than the stock tire. You could throw on a 33x12.5 or even 35's on a 16'' wheel as long as the tire is rated for the width of the stock wheel. I believe for the Tacoma they are 16x7.5, and most larger tires I have seen require the wheel to be 8-10'' wide. So on the factory 16's you can go a little bigger if you aren't lifting the truck, but not by much unless you trim!

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't want any rubbing 285's is a good size, like the ones I have on the truck in this video. The 2nd gens might not be as tall though so you might have some trimming but it really just depends on if you want to cut or not! I'm running 34x12.5 now and did the CMC and working on another alignment to get them dialed in!

      You should be pretty close without having to trim, but there may be some things to do. You may have to use a heat gun to push the inner fender liner out of the way behind the tires. If you are ok with that, it should work!

    6 to 8 plie , that sounds great to me, but do I need with this size of wheels to lift my truck, or not. I have third generation tacoma trd sport, 2017, wheels 17 stock.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With the setup I'm running, the 285's, I wouldn't be able to put those on a stock truck, unless you cut and trimmed a lot. If you want to stay closer to factory specs, maybe only go up in size just a little or just a little wider to avoid any rubbing.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you stick with the stock tire specs, you will have rubbing on the cab mount possibly. That tire size looks like a 30.6'' tire from a quick search, not sure the width, but the rubbing should be minimal. I did the CMC and it allowed for so much more clearance, so you could do that and not lift the truck and fit a bigger tire on if you wanted to go that route. You're only moving the tire out 12 millimeters so it's not a crazy amount, but the tire size (width) is what would change it more.

    I got a 2020 Tacoma. It’s the SR model v6 with tow package. I’m looking at 18’s with a 3” front 2” rear leveling kit. I’m trying to see what options. 18x9 0 offset is what I’m really looking at but as far as that. 8-10 ply tire and wanted to know tire size. Mainly used for daily driven and maybe dirt roads/ camping but that’s not all the time.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So my first setup was 18x9 0 offset as well and I was able to put a 33x12.5 tire on with very minimal rubbing, the tire was close to the UCA but didn't rub at all, so that was the biggest tire I could have put on with that setup. So you have room to go larger both in width and height.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can certainly do that size wheel, but at -22, depending on how wide that tire is you will have rubbing behind the tire. The bumper is easy to fix. But I did the CMC to get more clearance behind the tire, so that will be something you'll have to look at. The stock Tacoma's have a pretty soft suspension and towing won't really affect that, but if you tow a lot, I would recommend getting add-a-leafs to keep the truck level and stiffer in the rear to accommodate the weight.

      Really depends on your preference for a 16 or 17. I went from the stock 16's to 18's and now have 17's. Also a wider wheel car hold a wider tire, so depends on how wide the tire is. With most 4'' kits, I've seen you still have to cut the front crossmember, I did a 3'' lift with a top plate spacer and got about 3.5'' up front and 3 in the rear. I'm running 33's without any issues, just have to have the right tire/wheel offset for it to work without rubbing. My current setup with wheel spacers, I had to do the CMC and push in the fender liners. With an aggressive stance, expect some trimming (you can get away with minor trimming too).

      Honestly not much bigger! If you got adjustable upper control arms, you can push the tire about .5'' forward for more clearance to go a little bigger, but if you don't plan on changing any of the suspension components, you're limited to staying very close to the stock specs.

      A 33'' tire would rub with the stock suspension, unless it's very narrow. You would need at least a leveling kit, if you didn't want a full lift. And I did re-gear, but it's not necessary. I found it helpful for the truck to actually use 6th gear on the highway now and that's about it! Definitely drives smoother!
