How To Stop An Alien Invasion.... just XCOM basically
(i know i'm over simplifying this but, its the closest thing )
It's OK, IMO the only problem is that XCOM is "Vigilo Confido" (we watch, we keep the secret). And if we *really* want to fight we must absolutely not keep it secret.
Lukas their are tons of media that give reason why that's not a good idea (like star gate and some super hero shows)
there are pros and cons to both, but in XCOM's case, its best to be secretive dude to the fact the aliens can mind control and can strike *almost* anywhere anytime.
True, but in such a war we need all the talents it is possible to acquire or we die but we can't keep it secret if like al the 1% most intelligent people/best soldiers "dissapear". Someone will know sooner or later. While if we tell everyone, the panic will be huge first but then organisations will be set, preventions will be made (in particular for this mind control), precautions will be taken by everyone (plus it eases the found of psyonic potent people in XCOM's case). That would make a system with clay feet but that can harden *if* well organised.

Survival reflex. Its primitive yet understandable. Without having experience with lifeforms outside of earths own biosphere the natural method of dealing with other lifeforms would be caution. That caution is reasonable, but only because there are certain species which exist which would make Ripley's Alien resemble the threat from a common housefly. Insectoids. On some planets insectoids are the primary driving force of intelligence. The results of their infrastructure are usually reflected in hive minds. And as such they lack the emotional judgement that other core species adapt and relate to socially. They are the antithesis of sapien, and aqueous mental structure. Purely 100% ego driven, yet spread across several billion lifeforms which all work selflessly toward a selfish goal.

Mach 20 isn't that fast, the distance from Beijing to LA is around 10,000 Km , Mach 20 is around 6.6 Km/s , it would take around 25 Minutes to reach the destination, which is still FAST, but not as fast as you claim it to be.
