Yes, I would've drained it first. BBQ pork is a great way to use canned pork. It also makes food tacos if you season it with taco seasoning. God bless, dearheart.
I have always said.. If your hungry enough you will eat. And Jesus feed hundreds of thousands with simple bread and fish…. It’s what you can create out of what you have❤❤
Oh, Tessie! You’re killing me! Love you to pieces, but oh no, I can’t do marshmallows. Lol here at the wedding if that’s fine but oh no. I like my sweet potatoes with brown sugar and butter on them. My mom was always fixing them that way and then she got smart and started doing marshmallows and I wouldn’t touch them after that oh. And I kept yelling you got a drain it when you were with the pork and get the fat out. Lol but your barbecue sauce is really close to the one I make that’s a sweet and sour and that’s what I put on mine. I use tomato soup instead of ketchup, which it doesn’t matter it’s just, whatever you’ve got on hand, I suppose and I I also use that same combination to put on top, my meatloaf and inside my meatloaf it’s mustard and tomato soup with bell pepper and onion, and I use oats for my filler because the oats hold the moisture of the meatloaf better. Tessie, you and I’d have a great time in the kitchen. And I forgive you for the marshmallows, as long as I’m not the one having to eat them. Lol! You are a hoot, but I will keep those marshmallows away for me.😂😂 Much love to you Jesse God bless you! Hugs and I’m glad you found something else that you can enjoy. Also, you can use that pork for meatloaf. You can mix it with ground beef and do a beef and pork meatloaf. That was another way of stretching it . Take care.
I was born in 1951. In the 60's I recall my mother receiving government issued food - big boxes of cheese, cans of pork. She made BBQ pork and it was very good. This really brought back memories. We were low income at the time.
My brother, sisters, and I grew up with this food because our family was low income. My mother and father would go to the town next to ours and pick it up a couple times a year. Looking back on it, I feel my father might have been embarrassed at first, but it made a big difference in our food budget. There were even recipes on most cans of meat. With a little imagination, you could make a delicious meal. I’m glad it turned out well for you because I felt like you weren’t going to give it a chance. I didn’t expect that kind of reaction from someone who gets free food herself…
I wouldn't mind to eat pork from a can, the thing is that we don't have it in every supermarket. Back in the day it was more common (and less expensive). Back in the day we use it in pasta for a cheap meal, nowadays fresh grounded beef has the same price. I'm eating most of the times pork and have no problems with it, well because most of the old traditional recipes are calling for it. For now I'm soaking my 'brown beans' and I have lot of pork related stuff, because tommorow I'm gonna make a dutch brown bean soup. It is still winter :)
I remember when I was a child going to a local office of some kind with my Grandmother and picking up her monthly 'commodities'. She was given the canned pork, beef, a block of cheese (like velveeta but better), butter, rice and beans. All of it was so good and such a blessing. Social Security doesn't pay much now, but it paid even less back then. Must have been in the late 50's- early 60's. Yes, I was saying "drain it Tessie! LOL
We just opened up a can of bush baked beans from 2019, been in our pantry where it stays cool. They were just fine. Always do the sight, smell, pinky test first.
Good Morning Tessie, Sisters, Brothers, and Friends :-) Wish you all a wonderful blessed Tuesday filled with Gods Joy and Happiness :-) Remember to pray for one another and for all around the world :-) God Bless You ! Love you all :-) Keep smiling be safe :-)
Hi Tessie! I’ve used government pork many times. It makes fantastic pork tacos, I had some home canned mango salsa to add on top of the tacos. Absolutely wonderful
Well yeah... if I'm starving and at the food bank, the first thing I do is check all the labels to make sure they are intact. Otherwise I'd rather die starving! Can't eat it with a partly missing label... 🤪
Tessie, I never had government issued canned pork or anything I'm sure it tastes just fine the sweet potato's look yummy :-) Nice meal :-) Love you my sister :-) God Bless You and Ken :-)
My mother adds diced potatoes and makes empanadas out of the pork. Beef stew is so good. For pork barbecue you drain and don't mash. For stew add liquid don't mash add your potatoes and carrots and onions plus seasonings.
I need to go back to your government beef video. I have 3 cans that I need to use. My mother in law gets boxes and she refuses the meat. I want to make something good with it. I want to have her try something yummy so she can see that she can use it. 💚🌞
A friend gave me a very similar BBQ sauce recipe: mustard, ketchup, minced onions, Worchestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar, and a little cayenne powder if you like it. Putting that in the slow cooker with pork chops was usually a hit. 🙂
We were a family of seven children and two adults. We qualified for government food assistance. We got long blocks of yellow cheese, canned chicken and a ham spread. We called it dog food. We made sandwiches with it and it tasted good. We were never unfed but the pork is just as good as if you canned it yourself.
It’s perfectly fine. It’s USDA inspected and approved. Our family fixes the pork like you did them bake potatoes and make bbq pork stuffed potatoes. Add cheese, sour cream, butter, etc. it’s always a hit here.
Growing up in the 50s and 60s my Mother worked giving out government food.If any thing was left she could bring something home.If we were able to get the pork she made the best barbecue. She did drain and remove all the pieces of fat.
BTW my aunt who is a fabulous cook, heats up that canned pork, and gets the fat out .she keeps the juice and makes a gravy for the pork. And we eat it over rice.Same method for Chinese chow mein. Its pretty good.
Tessie, I enjoyed this video. You were so funny with the facial expressions! Lol! Government canned meat gets a bad wrap. And it’s unfair. That canned meat has brought a lot of people through some extremely rough times. My gramma always said there is no such thing as a bad meal, when your stomach is hungry enough! And boy was she right! Thanks for sharing the recipe with us. God bless you! 🙏❤️
I did not know the government was still canning things like PORK, BEEF or CHICKEN. Thise were great and I remember my grandmother using them in recipes.
Oh my goodness, Tessie, you crack me up! 🤣 I'm glad the pork bbq turned out. I was like yes more Ketchup! LOL. I also add a little Worcestershire sauce. Thanks for sharing your sweet life with us ❤️
I made crispy pork from the government issued pork. I removed the fat and juices, seasoned with pepper and paprika, and then fried the pork in a pan until crispy. It goes very nicely with fried rice and corn.
Tessie's you can add water and a pack of gravy mix and onion, and and and mix veggies and you can put that over mash potatoes..Beef gravy over potatoes..it's still yummy..
Enjoyed your video. I cant bring myself to eat that canned pork but I know if thats all we had I would. Ive been so poor in the past Ive eaten a can of cold corn. God provides and Im thankful for food.
Tessie, that actually looks really good. We don't have food places like you do where we live.I' wish we did but we have it better than a lot off people. God has blessed us with more than we had growing up and he has blessed me even more with you and your channel I have learned so much from you.. thank you Tessie for being you and sharing your knowledge and experiences with allof us. Hugs and kisses 💋😘
I never knew that stuff like that existed until I was married and pregnant with my second child. My husband said he scraps off the solid white fatty stuff but leaves in the juices. He simmered it in the slow cooker without sauce letting everyone put their own sauce on when they made their pulled pork sandwiches. It was a big success. The canned meat and blocks of cheese helped us a lot. At one time, we got powdered eggs, cornmeal, cheese, butter, peanut butter, and other things. I made a lot of cornmeal cookies and corn bread. Thank you for sharing your meal plan.
Tessie I have never seen an expiration date on the USDA cans or packages. I believe it is designed for long term food storage. Mom years ago would get the food given to stretch her food budget. She used the beef and porks to add to a big pot of rice or made gravy for rice or noodles or biscuits. It always tasted delicious. Great for bbq too. Have a blessed day friend
Great video, Tessie! Thanks for showing us even more ways to create a fantastic meal from items in the pantry and from things we might not think to buy or stock up on.
remember Tess don't judge a book by it's cover. Drain well can take of little of the fat heat it and see if you still have to much liquid. Then add barbecue sauce. also makes good pork and noodles don't drain though. Lots of possibility for meals. The potatoes need just a little brown sugar butter and cinnamon..
I'm so happy that your pork barbecue turned out so well, Tessie! I know that for a while there you were "holding your breath." (Maybe for a couple of reasons? 😀 That "aroma" before you added the barbecue sauce being one of them!) But in the end, everything turned out fine. You were just a bit of a risk taker there. But you wrapped things up with everything looking and tasting great, and a lot of money saved. Then there were the sweet potatoes? "Oh my word!." They looked SO good and I'm sure they tasted even better! A bit off topic, but I wanted to apologize to everyone for quoting a Shaker hymn last evening without really explaining who the Shakers were! I often am not able to catch the morning video, so I may have missed her if she dropped by there. I would always drain canned anything, save the liquid, , and put some back if you need it later. It looks the same as canned chicken! Sweet potatoes look delicious! Glad your pork turned out good, I knew it would! God Bless!
It makes wonderful camp stew Canned pork / shred Can chicken / shred Can corn Can butter peas What ever else you like or have on hand It makes wonderful camp stew
Thanks for sharing this with us. I have some of that government canned pork and did not know what to do with it - I will definitely try the barbeque sauce with it.
Cleaning out my Tuna cans that we had tonight to make burners with rolled cardboard with melted wax over them Then, to find metal #10 can to make a stove. I've been buying up used candles to use for these little projects. I'm saving my dryer lint to make starters for firewood.♥️🇺🇲
I got a bunch of these from the food pantry. I live on social security disability. I pay hundreds each month in medical bills, pantry food has saved me.
I remember getting the commodity food- that pork, the beef and chicken. I LOVED the beef, and I still buy at it Walmart. You can still get canned meat like exactly what you are using..but its around 8.00 a can@
I was trying to stretch things but I found it easier to just go back to work full time after retiring. It's no fun to be broke and trying to do all that. There's money to be made out there and it makes life better.
I love the idea of adding marshmallows to sweet potatoes, never tried that, and, that is a wise gal, leaving the rags as they are ..I’m so doing that! Have a good night Tessie… oh, and as you once so cheerfully exclaimed…please, “ kiss a chicken for me”!🥰🤗
Have volunteered once a month locally when government issued food is given out and ALL the labels noted NOT FOR SALE. So, I am curious how any store could sell the canned items. Friends tell me the canned chicken is amazing.
YummY!!!! We were given a can of beef just like that and it was so delicious. Sure wish we could buy the canned beef and pork where we live because it is very good food. Thank you for sharing with us.
I always drain it and rinse it off because of the grease and it does make a good barbecue and it does make a good casserole. You mix it in with your stove top stuffing pour pork gravy over and bake it at 3:50 for 30 minutes and have some extra gravy on the side and green beans or corn with it and it makes a very good meal.
Hello, I take the pork and drain it in a bowl, give the fat to the chickens. Mix this with eggs, bread crumbs, garlic parsley salt and pepper. Form into balls or in small little loaves. Bake in the oven or fry in a skillet. Make a brown gravy. Place the meat over a bed of hot rice and a spoon of gravey. It's super good!
Hi Tessie I've used canned pork from the government already you have to drain it and remove the fat and make it however you want it's not too bad if you're really hungry
Really enjoy using my crockpot. I make meatloaf in it and turns out delicious. Tessie I wouldn't drain it maybe it will taste good with the juice's. Looks like dog meat had me laughing 🤣🤣🤣😂
I love my crockpot too. It is the perfect modern way of using a parrafin stove and a pan. A lot of old fashion recipes are great with a crockpot. I wouldn't drain it either, I guess a lot of the moist would evaporated in just a matter of time.

I've made BBQ with canned chicken and also canned roast beef. I discovered you have to drain the meat well, or the sauce is runny. Good stuff. 😊
I've never tried the pork, but I would. Those princella sweet potatoes are my favorite as far as canned potatoes. Thanks Tessie!
I was just given some canned pork. I’ll give your recipe a try! 😊
Hi tessie. Your dinner looked good to me!!😊
Hi Tessie I've used canned pork from the government already you have to drain it and remove the fat and make it however you want it's not too bad if you're really hungry
The Gov't pork use to be a great addition to our family budget. There use to be a really good bar b que sauce recipe on it's back label.
I want to try some we stay so busy with animals that looks like fast and easy ..
