Five Things You Should Know about the Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is not only the largest but it is the oldest of the Arctic sled dogs. This breed is definitely built for work but most Alaskan Malamutes today are family pets. They are extremely athletic and make great sledding, hiking, and jogging buddies. If you are interested in making an Alaskan Malamute your next pet here are five things you should know.
    5. Grooming. Alaskan Malamutes have a lot of hair, if you get this breed be sure you buy a well made vacuum cleaner as well. The breed will shed heavily twice a year. And they are going to need a good brushing two to three times a week. This will keep their considerable coat clean and distrube the skin's oils.
    4. Barking. Alaskan Malamutes bark very little if at all. What they will do however is Howl. Gernerally when they are lonely or upset they will howl. Be warned, If you get more than one Alaskan, they will howl in unison. In addition to howling for personal reason, Malamutes are often encouraged by external sounds like police sirens and church bells.
    3. Children. Malamutes, when raised with kids, adore them, being especially patient with the kids they're raised with. However, small children can be in danger of getting knocked over by an excited Malamute, so adult supervision is required. Additionally, Malamutes are commonly food aggressive, so children should be taught not to interfere with a Malamute that's eating.
2.Trainablilty. The breed is independent and willful, they love to be in charge and won't hesitate to take advantage of any opportunity to push their agenda. So, you will need to be patient and consistent when training Alaskan Malamute.
    1. Weather tolerance. Alaskan Malamutes are cold weather dogs by design and will do best where the temperatures generally cold. The breed can live in warmer climates, provided there is shaded area outdoors. On extremely hot days access to air conditioning is a must.

Had a Malamute for 17 years.... a phenomenal animal. Never had to deal with any food aggregation whatsoever. She was, however, very dominant and needed to assert herself over any other dog.

@@J89477 I have a malamute cross with German Shepherd. Personally i would wait till the children are a lot older before getting a dog like this. I have an 11 yr old and my dog knows she is the youngest and would take advantage if we had not been training both daughter and dog. She is learning to assert herself and the dog does listen, but its taken a while. They are big heavy dogs and could cause injury if excited. I've been training my dog almost everyday since we had him, as it says in the video they assert themselves, so good strong handling is necessary. Spend the time with your little ones just now, get a low maintenance dog until you are ready the time on a malamute. Just my opinion, it obviously depends on what space you have etc, God bless.

This hits some key points but leaves out an awful lot including the most important. They tend to have severe seperation anxiety and can and will eat your couch and your house. There are a lot of Mals in foster or abandoned. I took in Moose from the best doggy mom in the world because it was just too much. Their personalities vary as much as the human population. Bronson just don't care and don't really nead you me or anybody but thats an exception. You are very lucky thow if you get a non-couch eater. I kept Moose as long as he could go to work with me and every where else except the dash through the grocery store was problematic even though he was in the caddy with the ac on he howeled so much Cops got called on me. Eventually his mom got a stay at home job and he's back with her horse and pig and several other dogs but its been a hard road. Don't take this on lightly and don't you ever hurt a mal. There's a special place in hell for people who neglet or hurt the likes of Mal's, handicaped persons and children.

The children part reminds me of when I had my Mal at the park on a busy day and this kid ran up from nowhere to grab the dog, trying to climb up onto him. Severian kinda shook the kid off then pounced on the kid because now it playtime and if the kid wants to play rough Sev was going to match the intensity. This kid was yeeted suddenly by 85 pounds of puppy so hard they lost a shoe. Kid grabbed the shoe and ran off. Kept waiting for a parent to come yell at me about my viscous dog but never did. The entire thing took less than 5 seconds and was over before I could even react. Almost like the kid materialized then disappeared back to the nether. It could have been a more traumatic ending if my dog wasn’t decently trained and I hope the kid learned something about running at and climbing on strange dogs.

I have a Shih Tzu who loves big dogs, he likes playing with big dogs more than little dogs, and he grew up around big dogs. I grew up with huskies when I was young, and my husky wasn't aggressive toward other dogs or people if we were around, but if we weren't around or we had to leave for bit she would be aggressive, she had trapped my uncle standing on the couch when he went into the house when we weren't there to take care of her one day, and she was aggressive with him that day, but never was when we were around him. We had cats growing up, and puppies, and another husky she never tried to attack them, but one time she ended up getting loose, and attacking the neigbors dog that was blind. So I know huskies can have an aggressive side sometimes, but what about Malamutes? I've seen a lot of Malamute videos where they are really good with smaller animals, but I just wanted to get some opinions, or stories on that.

Alaskan malamutes are NOT food aggressive - IF brought up properly. THis (internet etc) myth is getting old!! It refers to any breed!! with my Malamute boy -food can be taken out his mouth (meat etc) by any one in my family - including 9 year girl - straight out of his mouth! - ANY time while he eats as much as You like it!! I Got him 1 year old. The breeder had 11 pack of Malamutes and each and every one would allow to do it ANY time!! And more so - he does all the tricks my German Shepherd does!! - just the learning "style" is different. (another myth of "untrainable malamute") . make no mistake - "food aggression" is tied to dog's upbringing! - not to breed!!

Half a lifetime ago I had one who was a very light eater for a 115lb girl. Except the first frost usually made her want to feast. She went through 23 cans of wet in one night where she usually had half a can mixed with dry per day. If you’re wondering how the cans got opened she squeezed them until the lid popped off and ate the contents. Didn’t know she knew that trick until she did it. But still I can’t recall any food aggression on her part and would even share her bowl with our Labrador if she wasn’t particularly hungry.

All dogs breeds have food aggression, ALL NO EXCEPTIONS... The reason why people say that Alaskan Malamutes have food aggression problems is because they do, their food aggression instinct is one of the highest among all domesticated dog breeds. While I would agree with you that any Dog including Malamutes can be trained out of their food aggression acting like their food aggression doesn't exist won't help people proactively address behavioral problems. Especially newer Malamute/dog owners. Just because your dog is well trained or is more passive than other members of the breed doesn't mean that the breed is not known for a particular issue.

Just got a Malamute puppy. He’s 10 weeks old. He’s really nice but he’s also a handful. He loves jumping on me and biting me and my clothes. Does anyone have any tips on dealing with this?
