They not only show thier Malamutes in AKC confirmation, agility, and weight pull events, they go on long excursions into the outback of Northern California and Sothern Oregon. In this video Wendy and Jenifer share thier love and knowledge of this beautiful breed.
The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed of domestic dog originally bred for hauling heavy freight due to their strength and endurance, and later a sled dog.

I shared my life with an amazing 90 lb female Alaskan Malamute for 17 years. Not sure who was the boss though. She went out for 4 miles everyday until she was 16. I lived in an apartment for a couple of years with no problems. She was a couch potato indoors.

Love when you find people who breed/show dogs to talk about them. Their passion for the breed is always so evident, it's great they get to share their love for the breed with us. Started with their first malamute in 1968, 50 years ago! Working dogs are so beautiful

I dont know how we ended up with a malamute like our Rusty. He digs, but is not an escapee. He plays with other dogs well. He's super chill. He is NOT a morning dog. He kind of oozes out of bed only because we're out of bed. He doesn’t bark - he'll howl. He's super cuddly and sweet and loves giving nose kisses. He'll just come up and tap my nose with his. He is such a good boy and he's only 8 months old. I rescued him from a chicken coop in Central Texas when he was just @ 2 months old. Best thing I'd done in a really long time.

For the first 2 years I walked my mal for excercise/health. When I couldn't get her tired on walks anymore due to time restraints, I switched to bike rides. 5-10 miles at a steady loose leash trot did the trick. Soon that was not enough, so I took the same rides but didn't pedal. When she was 5 or 6 that wasn't enough anymore. I started taking my truck to ranches/farms/ blm roads. Driving 2- 3 hours while she chased me and the rabbits did the trick. When she was 8, that wasn't enough anymore, so I let her pull the truck.

Thank you for your spot-on representation of this breed. While not always for the inexperienced dog owner, they are an incredible dog and their loyalty and commitment to their pack is unrivaled. As you both said, I can't imagine my life without a Malamute! For those who are not showing or going for titles, please consider rescue! American Malamute Assistance League is amazing and will direct you to rescues in your state/area. My beautiful woolly Malamute, Stormy, was a rescue and by far the best dog I've ever had. He is my absolute joy in life.

My mal is 2 and has always been off lead - he has amazing recall compared to my Doberman. Regarding the guard dog part - my dobie is supposed to be the guard dog - nope he's protecting his beauty sleep whereas my mal patrols the garden whereby we have a 3 foot fence and not once has he tried to escape.
I think with my two breeds they've bounced off each other. Very loyal and very loving.
Those dogs in the video are just stunning!

I had a Alaskan Malamute working bread. He always came when called and I could walk all over Barrie Ontario with him not on a leash, he would heal and stop when I did, I could also leave him in sit and go in a store and he would not move until I came our, even with kids trying to get him to move. They are a very smart bread, and with the wright training, will do what you ask. He was also a great lead dog for my sled, You just have to give them lots of love and they will return it. And when the kids next door left the gate open he would go and sit on the front step and wait for some one to let him in.

I enjoyed your comments. I owned the malamute breed for ten years. I kept six dogs and ran many miles sledding all winter long. They are extremely intelligent, powerful and loving. They are pack oriented and were aggressive with any other dog outside the pack and I would add very protective of family. They seldom barked but would love to howl.

As someone who's had numerous dogs... get and Alaskan Malamute. They are THE best. They're by far the best looking dogs, very regal and majestic in appearance. Their personality is very amusing, just make sure you set the tone immediately that you are the Alpha, otherwise they will push your buttons for life. Also, nothing better then when people ask... "Is that a husky?" "No it's a Malamute!" "Wow he/she is huge, what do you feed him/her?" "uhh....huskies..."

these never should be mistaken for huskies. Malamutes are noticeably and significantly larger and not a slim shaped of dogs. they're stockier and have wider thicker heads and snouts. I love both of them, but they are distinct and not identical.

Tough to do but sit down with the puppies around you. The one that crowds your feet looking up at you wiggling their butt is going to be your buddy for life. Forty some odd years ago I raised Malamutes and establishing dominance is critical. It DOESN'T mean bullying the dog it means they follow you the leader. When I had to cross California's central valley in summer I stopped in Colusa and had the bed of the pickup sprayed half full with shaved ice. The dog rammed his cold nose into my cheek as a kiss of appreciation. Malamutes adore occasional feasts of de-boned fish. They and i were inseparable. Hundreds of alpine high altitude hikes together.

Not mentioned but important to know, the Inuits kept their mals inside with the family. Mals do best living with their family inside. Yes, they are active. Mine goes on a 2.2 mile walk every morning. But keep them close when they are not exercising.

I definitely disagree with their point that “malamutes are breeds you absolutely cannot take off leash and that they won’t come back to you in open areas.” I walk my malamute daily off leash and he does very well, I leash him when people or other dogs come into view.
I do love their comments on backpacking with them. My malamute loves backpacking and winter camping.

Sir, I think you have an exception to the rule. Most Malamutes that I know, including my own two, will get a primal drive when spotting game and will chase it down. Eventually they will come back but not when you call them but when they are finished. Mine only go off leash in an enclosed area like the backyard.

Correction to life expectations is average 12 to 14. Hip dysplasia is due to over breeding years ago also tumors for the same reason and breeders should be held accountable for a breed of historic importance that is manipulated. Tall and short is a myth. Our little fat Gal could out pull both Big Fatty 95lb and Perfect Mal 88lb. She was 70lb and owned everything like a queen. Smart, perfectionist, bold, feisty, caring, inventive and smiled alot.
Malamutes are not show dogs and should not be bred for that. They are family and want a place to love and protect after the fact they worked more hours than we as humans could ever contemplate.
I don't know of any breed of dog than can create so much happy times and deviating loss once gone.
Noted in this vid..."Looking after a child". No..."Looking after a being of love".😊

Well this videos was informative but never showed the dog in action for what is was design to do. They put a standard on the dog but I thought these dogs where for sledding.

I've seen them with the sleds and these particular ladies. They literally have to set an anchor because the dogs are howling and ready to go. For not being sprinters they tow a sled at scary speeds and are absolutely over the top thrilled to do it.

Can I take them with me on Horse back rides? Will they Stay with me? Or run off.

I'd say there are enough Huskies and Malamutes out there today to say "it depends". While they will have a prey drive, many good breeders do also have their sleddogs around cats and other small animals, so that's a way you can get a Mal that might get along with a dog. Another thing that might help is to have a dominant cat in the house. I may be wrong, but I was told by a breeder of sled dogs that even though they have a prey drive, they will see the cat as family and not food if they're raised with them

If they grow up with them then it's fine. A strange cat is going to be chased as is anything else. They think they are hunters and will occasionally catch stuff. A rabbit and a gopher learned that the hard way in our backyard. You really can't have them off leash outside of an enclosed area. They're roamers and escape artists and coming when called is optional.
