    Hey Candie, This is great! Certainly not inexpensive to get geared up though. I'm curious as to how you keep dust and other particles from adhering to your piece as it sits in the open air curing for so long? Thanks and I look forward to your next installment!

    • @CandieBolton
      @CandieBolton  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Anthony Naps Hey Anthony~! That's a very good question and I'll be honest that I haven't yet found a way to indefinitely prevent dust during the curing process. However, there are steps that you can take to prevent dust in general and I've discovered that the most important thing is to always keep your toy in sealed bag before painting. If it collects dust before the painting process then make sure to remove all of it first. You can do this with water or a rag soaked in lacquer thinner. Wiping sofubi down with lacquer thinner is a good practice regardless because it helps prepare the surface for paint. If your toy has dust on it during the painting process then the paint won't adhere correctly and the finish will be rough, it's very frustrating!! So the best thing you can do is prevent it from happening in the first place and keep it sealed away.
      As for the curing process, just do your best to keep it in a place that is fairly dust free so if you're curing them where you paint then make sure there is an exhaust fan for all of your paint particles and also don't do any sanding in that area. If you happen to get hairs or large particles on your clear coat then grab a pair of tweezers and pull them off ASAP, the sooner the better. So if you are really worried about it then you can check up on the clear coat after a couple hours while you still have time to fix it.
      I hope that helps~! ^_^

    What type of paint is Monster Kolor? Is it just a lower-quality vinyl paint than V-color? Or is it something else entirely? How does Monster Kolor hold up to basic wear & tear compared to V-color?

    • @CandieBolton
      @CandieBolton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Monster Kolor is lacquer based, it's basically an automotive paint. It holds up okay on its own, but I personally I would always clear coat it either with the glossy clear coat that MK sells or polyurethane. Once it's properly sealed you can expect it to last about as well as any automotive paint job.

      Monster Kolor is made in the US so that's probably why you haven't seen it before. It's really great for airbrushing! I got the gaia paint from a friend and I fell in love with it so I bought a ton of paint when I went to Japan a few months ago, but I had to leave all of it with a friend. What kind of paint were you planning on painting it with afterwards? In most cases you don't need to use krylon primer unless you plan on doing hand painting with brushes. Try waiting 1-2 days and see what happens. Heat will usually help things cure faster.

    the reason that you should use spacificaly that type of glove is that it protects your skin from absorbing the chemicals way better than latex. latex gloves on the otherhand still allow the solavants threw their molecular structure even holding the solavants against your skin where it has contact with the latex. this is very bad and can cause luminers or the artists desiease down the road. I have some sad stories from art professors who have developed this problem with oil paints and solovants. the nitro gloves are also the same thing pro car painters use so for those who are looking, if you cant find any try a auto supply store.

      @CandieBolton  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really good to know, thank you so much for that information! I worry about what's going to happen to me down the road from working with such harsh chemicals everyday. I try to take as many safety precautions as I can, but I often question if it's good enough D=

    • @TheWhiteMandara
      @TheWhiteMandara 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heh well every one reacts diffrent over time. I don't know enough about air brushing in particular to offer a safer solution that also works with air brush. Like gamsol is what we use for oil paint solovant in the studio its less dangerous. But I think your on the right track. And I hope nothing bad happens to you. It took 40 years of exsessive oil painting for my professor to develop luminers. Thanks for making this channel I've been trying to figure out air brushing for a while for my sculpture work And thank sharla too thats how I found you.

    May I share a tip with everyone who see this...It wouldn't hurt to use a better respirator for your lungs for extra superior safety for the only set of lungs we have. The way we see lacquer and spray paint react to certain plastics, foams and other materials we think nothing of it at first...but breathing that stuff can accumulate in our lungs. You should research Supplied air respirators with the half mask. If you want extra safety. They may be costly but saving your lungs might be a worthy expense. Another tip is that its so much safer to spray Vinyl paints outside or in a well ventilated area (Garages,Porch etc.). I never spray that in a living area where I normally breath. Acrylic paint is the only paint that I use in living areas for detail work without mask. But vinyl paints as a base color I always use outside. And always make sure the weather is right for your painting.
    1:prep figure
    2:proper respirator then spray vinyl base coat let it properly dry
    3:Acrylic details let it dry
    4:Wear proper respirator then clear coat
    Many supplied air respirators on ebay. You may a cheaper one...www.ebay.com/itm/Supplied-fresh-Air-Respirator-breathing-half-1-2-mask/380153845245?hash=item5882ef55fd:g:dhIAAOxy4M5R8CiN

    I keep seeing everyone say they use monster kolor for this but I'm not sure why? I mean, if you actually look up non-art talk about painting on vinyl they almost always seem to recommend acrylic and I think Monster Kolor is a lacquer? Monster Kolor and V color seem to have really cornered the market on this but I've not been able to find out why people use them so heavily as opposed to other paints.

    • @CandieBolton
      @CandieBolton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s mostly an issue of accessibility. Paints that contain flammable materials are very difficult to ship internationally so not everyone has access to them. Monster Kolor is readily available within the US, has a nice selection of colors, and is airbrush ready. If you can find a place that reliably supplies V-Color or other vinyl based paints within your area then consider yourself very lucky!

    • @Audiodump
      @Audiodump 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CandieBolton No what I mean is why use that kind of paint at all? If you look into like...other vinyl figures they all just use acrylic. Stuff like those Dunny or Munny figures specifically recommend acrylic even. And automotive paint for vinyl is acrylic too. Most airbrush paint is also acrylic! So why does everyone in the Sofubi scene use Lacquer?

      @CandieBolton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Audiodump Correct, no paint is superior to another. It's all in how you use it. You might meet some people who will tell you that vinyl paint is the one and only paint you should use, but that's just their opinion.

    I can't believe the amount of airbrushes you've gone through. As a previous commentater (Steve) said you've probably melted the rubber seals in those guns, for water based paints like acrylics they work fine but spirit based paints with acetone additives will melt your rubber seals and also make them swell and go spongy. You need to replace the rubber seals with silicone based seals that don't react to spirit based paints. If your not interested to strip and fit new seals why not turn those dead brushes into cash. A lot of folks are looking for spare parts or are capable of repairing them. With the money you make you could look for a brush fitted with silicone seals.

    The only way anyone would have a heap of supposedly broken Iawata airbrushes means you don't know how to clean your brushes, let alone realize you need solvent proof gaskets. I have sprayed thousands of hours out of the same Eclipse for a decade or more and only ever replaced the needle and cones twice. As well about spidering, yeah, that is solvent burning and contamination as all thinners except for a few have some form of acetone and vinyl solvent does not. Thus you're cooking your paint. Sorry, just never seen a heap of Iawata airbrushes neglected like that and it's sad. Get solvent proof gaskets or have someone build you a brush with them.

    • @CandieBolton
      @CandieBolton  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve La Dedha Don't worry they're not all Iwata! Most of them are cheap brushes that I purchased for $20ish each. I tried my best to research how to clean and repair each and every brush, but being new to this inevitably led to many many failures. So I had to give up on those brushes, but I hope to figure out how to fix all of the Iwata ones eventually. Thankfully my first eclipse has lasted me over a year now!
      Thank you for your tip about the solvent proof gaskets, I'll definitely look into that =D!

    • @totenkray
      @totenkray 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm harsh because I have seen the same piles with other novice airbrushers and though the Neo's are less tooled they should last several years and can be updated with better parts. Fish scaling and webbing is from the acetone in the paint as you're cooking the paint by catalyzing as thinners all have acetone in them and too much thinner. You ether need a high heat reducer or low heat reducer to thin less and break down the paint without causing the polymer chains to break apart and cook. Deal with Coast Airbush in Anaheim CA, they will have the parts for enamel, vinyl and other solvent heavy retrofitting and sell Iwatas built to withstand heavy solvents. I've been shooting the heaviest enamel, 1-Shot out of a Neo for 3 years with no problem and not a single parts malfunction. And finally vinyl paints, urethanes will shorten your life span without proper ventilation and especially without using an organic vapor mask that is has pre and post filters changed regularly including working in a slip stream where air moves in front of your face and out of the room and never paint where you live or eat.

    • @Mr.Nightcraft
      @Mr.Nightcraft 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some good info here. Sadly it's also very disheartening. I've airbrushed quite a bit in the past, but only using acrylics, then going outside and sealing that acrylic work with aerosol cans of enamel clear-coats. This always yielded paint jobs that held up well over time on most plastics.
      But, I discovered that several of the Sofubi figures I've collected, with the intention of painting, would require V-color to get the job done properly. Enamels chemically react and remain tacky, while acrylics are easily scratched off (Glad I tested on my scrap pieces of "flare" first.)
      Still, it was obvious Vcolor is the only serious way to go.
      So, knowing V-color is also highly caustic, I purchased a respirator and a small portable spray booth so I could safely airbrush in my small studio apartment. Basically, my work area is in the same "section" of our 1-bedroom apartment as our kitchen.
      However, your comment about "not painting where you live or eat" is troubling. I literally have nowhere else I can go to do this work. and was hoping this small spray booth would handle my ventilation issues.
      I certainly don't want to shorten my life expectancy, or that of my GF, just to paints some monsters. But, this is crazy! How does anyone afford a separate work area in the middle of a city for an occasional hobby?!

    • @CandieBolton
      @CandieBolton  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to quickly answer your final question: I live out in the middle of nowhere and that's the only reason I can afford a place with a garage. I personally wouldn't spray inside of my house because I'm very sensitive to chemicals and have frequent allergic reactions, but with that said I know a lot of people who have no choice but to paint in their house and they've been doing so for years. If you have a good spray booth and exhaust fan then I think you should be okay. My general rule of thumb is if you can smell the chemicals (without a respirator on) then your ventilation isn't getting all of the particles out of there. Anyways, I don't know that the actual long term health effects are, I'm just particularly paranoid because my cat and I both have asthma and my skin will break into a rash at the drop of a hat. As for using enamel paint- yeah that tackiness drives me crazy. I always seal my paint job with Monster Kolor clear coat or polyurethane (automotive clear coat) to get rid of that.

    • @Mr.Nightcraft
      @Mr.Nightcraft 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! So you've actually had luck layering these different types of paint with each other? I assumed that since V-coat was formulated to chemically bond with vinyl, that putting enamel either under it or on top of it would likely cause the same (sticky) situation.
      But, it's fascinating you actually think you've solved the problem just by covering up that tacky surface!
      I wonder if any type of adverse reaction or deterioration would occur of a long period of time?
      I just got Master Airbrush portable spray booth (MAS B440DCLK) and it's not super-duper powerful. I know some vinyls can be a highly carcinogenic material when heated or ionized. From everything I've read: V-color is very dangerous (which is why it's so hard to obtain here in the US.) But, I think it has less to do w/ the fumes and more to do with the actual particles. Even getting a few small particles lingering in my kitchen area and settling on cooking surfaces or food, might be bad news D:
      I need a friend with a garage!
      Really appreciate your responses! Thank you.
