On the air compressor, the upper body is the compressor, the lower body is the air tank. Having an air tank means the compressor can fill the tank with compressed air and not run continually, like your former compressor. Next is the regulator which allows you to change the pressure of the air going to the air brush. This is an important part that some people overlook as you would use a much higher pressure to spray primer (like 25 - 30 PSI) than you would to do detail blending work (8-12 PSI). Note that those numbers are very adjustable, and will change depending on your airbrush and paint/primer. At the bottom of the regulator is the moisture trap. The release valve is to drain the moisture. When air is compressed, the humidity in the air is squeezed out as water. You don't want to randomly add more water to your airbrush line (messes with the airbrush and the paint), so having a moisture trap to remove that water is important.

Your 2nd compressor is a single tank. The first one you bought doesn’t have a tank to store air so it needs to kick on everytime you use it therefore much easier to overheating. Having a tank helps to regulate pressure so it only kicks on when the pressure drops below certain threshold.

Exactly how I see it. The first one is basically just a motor that has to keep running during use.

I really wish that more videos about airbrushing were as pleasant to watch as yours! I've been airbrushing for years now but I still like to watch videos because every so often I pick up something new. Besides the fact that you look and sound better than most, I'm so grateful that you use a compressor with a tank! Tanks make a monumental difference! Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I remember buying those Tamiya paints as a kid and they were affordable, now they are freaking expensive. The best thing about those paints were you could brush them on and they left barely any paint brush marks. Easy clean up also. I even still have my old badger airbrushes, The high end ones were nicely made.

In case someone finds this on TH-cam like me, my thoughts on brushes etc.
Iwatas are great airbrushes. I sold my Eclipse eventually because I got fed up with how much more difficult it was to clean than my badger and H&S brushes. Badgers are the most economical brushes you can buy in the states. Badger Patriot 105 is always the brush I recommend people start with because it’s very forgiving and hard to damage. I still use mine to prime and base larger models. The current other brushes I own are a Badger SOTAR 20/30 and an H&S Infinity CR Plus. The sotar is a great step up to do more detail. The Infinity, while being the Lamborghini of airbrushes (literally the best money can buy) is more of a brush you “want” rather than one you “need”. I can do 95% of the same thing with my SOTAR for only a slight decrease in quality and ease of use.
I also have the same airbrush booth. I use two “daylight” desk lamps as opposed to a LED strip for better lighting.

Big thumbs up for excellent recommendation. I use the same Iwata airbrush and the same spray booth. I also have an Iwata compressor. A little more money but well worth it. That "pressure relief" is actually what you use to blow the water out of the moisture trap which is what that glass container is. Excellent paint recommendation also. You really know what you're doing.

This was a very good overview of the components of your setup. Thank you for posting this. I'd like to suggest that if you could let the camera have more time to focus on details like the manufacturer's information and model number of the air compressor and the "airbrush booth", and also the paints and thinner products you've tried that gave you the best results it would make these videos easier to follow for us novices thinking of giving this hobby the "next step" to getting properly equiped. Please do a follow-up to this with the ventilation set-up an lighting in the "airbrush booth." We would like to see how that works in an apartment with such clean white carpeting and walls and the challenge of humidity; especially with Spring and Summer conditions escalating. Keep up the good work!👍👍

I would like to recommend the Paasche D3000R air compressor. It sells for about $150 at Midwest Airbrush Supply. It's nearly the exact same thing Meli is showing us here. It comes with a regulator, moisture trap and pressure gauge showing both P.S.I. and BAR (essential features that you'll have to buy otherwise). Most important, it has a tank (I believe it's 1 gal.), which, as Meli explains, is very important. The motor is quiet and the coupling fits both Paasche and Iwata air hoses. I've had mine for 7 years, and I love it!

  • @VidJunkie63

Thank you for sharing, @Gunpla meli. The "regulator" is a pressure regulator and water filter combination unit. The dial on the side shows the air pressure going out, and the valve at the bottom would drain any collected water filtered out of the compressed air out on its way to the airbrush. Being FL myself, I am familiar with the humidity, and that filter would be a great asset if you were working outdoors, working in an airconditioned environment, the humidity is pretty much handled by the A/C. What you have currently is a compressor and an air tank. Your description of the original compressor unit was one that did not have an auto-off feature and lacked an air tank.

i highly recommend the Iwata Eclipse as well, nozzle is big enough to lay down base coat quickly yet fine enough for small details. i also find it the easiest to clean and disassemble since the nozzle isnt threaded but held in place with a compression nut, so no tools required.

  • @wyrdhunter
    @wyrdhunter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’ve had my Iwata Eclipse C for well over a decade and it’s my workhorse. I use it for Gunpla and miniature wargaming.
I’ve got a similar spray booth off of Amazon though always set up now that I have a dedicated room in my house. If you can’t vent it out a window you can tape a large garbage bag around the end of the vent to capture any unfiltered particles.
I use water-based acrylics for wargaming so I use them for Gunpla as well. Several companies have started making mecha specific paint lines (Vallejo, Secret Weapon miniatures) which are designed to be extremely resistant to coming off from parts rubbing together.
Alclad is awesome but you MUST wear a mask even with a filter. Enamels are really horrible for your lungs.
I used to live in Miami and understand the struggles with the humidity. Not that Orlando is too much better. Good video though.

I just came across this post and will attempt to help you to understand your compressor system. The gauge is an air pressure gauge that lets you know what pressure the tank will release or is releasing air at. It normally shows one reading while at rest and will drop down a bit when you start releasing air through your airbrush or whatever. The regulator controls the air pressure and it is the black knob right next to the air gauge. The other clear thing with the release valve/button on the bottom is a water trap. As the compressor compresses air, condensation occurs and the trap helps to remove water from the air line so it doesn't end up getting sprayed out of your airbrush. Hope this helps you.

hey there, thanks for the very informative video what really caught me is that awesome portable spraybooth u got there, at first i thought it was just a sitting power regulator or a power supply for your computer but when u opened it i really never thought that its a spraybooth and i really need that stuff so bad, i have a DIY spraybooth im currently using but living in a small apartment just take so much space especially if your not using it but with this one its so very convinient, anytime, anywhere u just can move it with ease, ill definitely gonna get myself one, and oh btw just a suggestion using a pressure of 20 to 30 psi btw i think its too much IMO, why not try and see 15 to 12 psi, i think its more less pressure it will give on ur compressor, not much fumes bouncing and flying around, only that you have to thin ur paints a bit more that the 15 to 12 psi pressure can atomize perfectly well ☺️😊😊👍👍

You have selected the same products I use. All quality and consistently dependable. You can use the Mr. Color Leveling Thinner with even the Tamiya line of paint and even their Acrylics since they are solvent based. Iwata airbrushes are top notch and I would also recommend GSI Creos (Mr Hobby) line as well. Harbor Freight Tools sells a good compressor that is pretty quiet and has a tank. You can choose the 1 gallon or two gallon of the FORTRESS ULTRA QUIET line. The two gallon is bigger but, will rarely need to start up during painting due to the size of the tank. Good Luck !

Good information once again. Just some info, the pressure regulator is the knob that adjusts said pressure. The gauge is what you pointing at. PSI means Pounds per Square Inch. I used to use an airbrush when I did model car kits. But I moved away because I saw other techniques with spray cans. I would say using an Airbrush is perfect for Gundam kits though. I liked how informed the viewers on how much pressure you used to paint, that’s good knowledge! About video coverage, please be slow when bringing objects up to the camera, gives it time to adjust. You did an awesome job of comparing a past airbrush to your current one too. You covered the why! Look forward to your next video! Keep up the good work!

You know, I was going to build my own booth initially, but this little pre-fabbed unit is so perfect and reliable, plus you can buy replacement filters on Amazon...the booth was only around $100. Also, if you want to increase the size, you can buy a second one and hook them together for twice the footprint. I know Byron means well below, and building one would be fun if you're handy and have the time, but these little units are worth the money and convenience IMO.

Nice video, and you are correct with name of the item "Regulator". The air regulator regulates the amount of air coming from the air tank. Depending on where you live, due to the amount of humidity in the air, you may need an air drier filter after the regulator to remove moisture from the compressed air. Also, there should be a valve on the bottom of the air tank so you can remove the condensed air (water) from the tank, this will help prevent the tank from rusting out.

I just bought the same Iwata last week before finding your channel today. They were pretty much $149 from everywhere but Chicago Air Brush had no sales tax and free shipping.
