Lmao I used to think the same when I first started using the sustain pedal. But yeah it sounds like too many things are playing at the same time if you hold it down too long
Cool, yes, but not clear. A painting can look cool, while still being messy. And using the sustain pedal constantly will cause the sounds to mush together, and sound cluttered.
This was SO helpful, thank you. I somehow went through 2 levels of piano as a kid with nobody teaching me to use the pedal (not sure why, but I'm guessing it was because I learned mainly baroque music, which wasn't written for an instrument with a sustain pedal in the first place) and then quit lessons around the time I might have learned it. As an adult I was always at a loss about how to attempt to use it. This was perfect, thank you so much!!
I've been doing piano for 6 years I'm so mad at myself for never really learning how to use this. I am going to learn this asap because my songs already sound so much better.
@@von6413 I've started playing piano (keyboard) 25-30 years ago and just really got back into it seriously and I can say it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Sitting alone and nailing a tune and playing it over and over 100x is so relaxing and fulfilling.
@@staticklingon2182 that’s great! I personally... have been struggling to find motivation to play it. I’m still so new and don’t have a piano teacher like I used to in school. Any tips?

Thank you! Got a piano keyboard in September and it came with a sustain pedal. Well I have been practicing without using it. Even recorded some songs without using the pedal. Got some constructive feedback that I need to be using the sustain pedal. Hey- at least it didn’t take me too long to start (trying) to use it. Excited to use it going forward, hope it makes my cutesy songs shine!
Thank you so much for making this video. I've been playing piano self taught for years, and would just hold the sustain pedal down the whole song. This one trick has made me sound way better when I play now.
Hi Ilinca, the last time we talked I was just learning chords. Now I have progressed to songwriting. Wow, Yes! I had a boost in piano skills when I bought the sustain peddle for my Yamaha PSR E463 keyboard. My songs sound much fuller with the attachment sustain peddle. Much more beautiful fuller piano. Your video here has helped me a lot. Thank you.
The best instruction video I’ve seen on the sustain pedal, even other videos from professionals were not as clear as this one. I wanted to know when to lift and when not to and how. Thank you now I now. 🙏
Here’s a tip! If you are playing high to low (vice versa) notes, its better to use the pedal. Sometimes we forget to use the finger technique for our scales, so we better cover our gaps with the sus. pedal.
I just got a pedal and I was so excited to use it and then when I did I didn’t think I was doing it right and I’m so glad I found this video because my song did sound messy This helped so much thank you!!
Very well done Lesson. Not that i would need it, but i always had a hard time explaining others when to use the pedal. I just use it when it feels right. But you're right about the chords, i just do it without thinking. I think i worked that out while learning ragtimes (where you really need it, or your baseline ceases to exist...)
Bless you, man! I've always just held it down all the time knowing it was wrong, but I didn't know how to use it any other way or "properly" you could say. Thank you!
I’m gonna be honest, Ive known how to read sheet music for a long time and I’ve played piano for a good amount of time too and I’ve always thought the “Ped.” notation said “Led.” I always knew what it meant but lmao wow
I had a crappy keyboard and always just held the sustain down non-stop 😅 now I have a nice piano and keyboard and it sounds terrible. Time to learn good and proper method 🎹 thanks TH-cam piano guy!

Ive been playing keyboard for 2 years now but ive never use the pedal until now. Playing with it just turn me to a total beginner lmao. Does anybody have the same situation as me?
Abit late lol but yes, it happened to me lol especially since it’s new to you and you have to get not only your two hands to play simultaneously but your foot also
I’ve been playing my entire life on and off for almost a decade and only learned to use it now. I’ve used one partially at the beginning of this year but all I did was hold it down LOL
This is brilliant thank you so much for sharing! It's a huge help in understanding when to use the sustain pedal effectively, esp. for a novice like me 🙂
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I’ve played piano since elementary school off and on for years (I’m 18) and was never taught how to use the pedal. I had an idea of what it was used for but didn’t know how to use it. This has cleared up years of not knowing!
Thanks I was very irritated playing Sweden because there is that one moment where it takes me a sec to get my fingers on the right notes and it sounded... off, so this could help👌
Thanks. Is there a performance difference advantage using a Nektar NP-2 pedal versus a Roland DP-2 polarity switch pedal? In the pedal in your video, does it do some work when pressed halfway? I'm asking because the DP-2 is a switch type which is simply ON and OFF. And I wonder if the Nektar NP-2 pedal works differently than a switch polarity pedal.
So if you’re playing a complex song like The interstellar main theme then does this mean I’m basically rapidly pressing my foot up and down since the chords are played really fast?
Mine stopped working ( though I don't think it worked to begin with🙄) I got the sustain pedal but had to buy an adapter for it to fit my cheap keyboard. I'm a beginner at keyboard & want to learn to play w/one. Any advice?
I use it at the correct places but it just sounds so jumbled if you go to my recent vid you can see why I’m trying to improve my sound cuz it just sounds like I’m constantly holding the pedal and I want to get rid of this i thank you for your teachings m8
My teach taught me there is a sustain pedal only after I finished a long melody. I was so happy I finished the melody and now she is asking me to play it with sustain and I just can’t do that properly xD. Could I use sustain pedal at the same time with the chord by the way? Or I always have to do it after the first notes of chord?
if you reset the sustain right before the next chord it will cut off the previous chord and wont sound as smooth and connected. you do it the second you press on a chord so the previous chord can ring out fully :). hope that helps
“It sound quite messy”
Me: wtf that was sick!
Lmao I used to think the same when I first started using the sustain pedal. But yeah it sounds like too many things are playing at the same time if you hold it down too long
