Sorry Joe, this is the lesson where I first saw the socks. Disregard my other posts. I’ve since purchased a pair almost as cool as yours and I do believe my Sustain technique is improving. Not to mention my foot is warmer. Great video Joe, was a big help.

5 years later I am watching this video, I’ve been learning piano with extreme progress very fast due to my music playing on the guitar and understand the logic of how instruments work. But the pedal had stumped me a little and this video was all needed to understand the fundamental of the pedal. You’re the best!

When you showed the "naturally" hand-foot coordination, thats so - so myself, and this video really answer my question!

I first tried this exercise about 2 weeks ago and was terribly disappointed at myself for not being able to get that "UP-down" in sync with even one hand, to the point that I kept avoiding to give it another try ever since and focused instead on doing some extra reps on the more basic exercises.
Now today I thought maybe it's time to finally try and push myself into the scary pedal territory again and guess what? All but nailed it on the first try!
    This is unbelievable.
    Thank you Joe!

This is the best video I have seen on how to use the pedal. Other videos show you at normal speeds which is not helpful for beginners, they need to slow it down like he does in this video.

I always was looking for a video that really shows me how to use the sustain pedal because I always did it wrong, but bro... Thanks a lot man, keep it up, I really love your videos and I really enjoy them watching and practicing with you, God bless you man, thanks you so much you don't know how this channel helped me xD, sorry for my bad English btw, I don't speak English very well, another thing is that I never comment in any video but man, I needed to do it for this one xD, thanks again and don't stop making videos bro! What an awesome video. I love how you demonstrate exactly what it sounds like when you do it wrong, and how doing it right sounds so much better. Like all beginners, I'm still working on getting the pedal timing right, and this video is helping so much. The other awesome thing that I have to applaud is the fantastic little practice pieces you put together--they sound so good, and this one is especially great! If people overhear me, they don't think, "Oh, she's practicing her sustain pedal again." They think, "Wow, what's that super cool music she's playing?" The one problem I have that's not addressed in this video (maybe in another, I'll look) is that the pedal keeps slipping away from my foot. Grippy mats haven't helped. Using the pedal sideways has helped a good deal. You don't seem to have the slipping problem--I wonder why?

I ordered a sustain pedal for my keyboard, and am waiting for it to come in. I will be practicing what you showed in the video. I understand so much more about the sustain pedal now. Thanks. Wow glad I watched this video only a day after getting a pedal. I was guilty of pressing it down on the chord change, god knows how long that would've taken to correct if I had carried on that way. Taking a bit of getting used to, but on my last little practice session I noticed myself a few times actually naturally lifting it on the chord change without thinking about it, so I must be getting there.

Quick question; What pedal is that? What’s it called, and would you recommend it personally? :-)
I’m trying to look for the right pedal to buy at the moment! Want to find something to go along with the Novation LaunchKey 61 MK3 keyboard, which I’m hopefully getting soon.
Currently I’m considering getting the Airturn ATFS-2 pedal (about $25), however I’m slightly worried about the cable maybe not being long enough - so I’d might have to get some sort of extension cable for it then, if I were to go with that one (if it’s even a thing lol)
Any tips or advice for a novice? Would be much appreciated 😅

Great share, you have a great teaching style.
As a newbie, it was mind blowing to me why they call this the damper pedal when it mostly seemed to sustain. When my piano instructor first showed me what was going on, I was laughing because it worked opposite of what I always thought it was used for (I am a seriously adult learner, been around a bunch of decades).
Getting that precision time down is still a bit of a challenge, by everything does sound much better with it when done right (accidentally right, or not).

Thank you so much, exactly what I've been looking for. I think I got what you mean by "anchoring the chord." One question: When usingLeft hand to play Chords and Right hand to play Melody, should the pedal coordinate with left hand or right hand's up-and-down? Should the pedal always coordinate with the hand that plays Chords, not Melody? (also in your last example with both hands playing chords, you coordinated pedaling with the Right hand; what about coordinating pedal with the Left hand?)

    One question if i may:
Let´s say we have those chords looping; when it goes to the beggining, do you press the sustain pedal and the keys at the same time like the first chord you played or do we keep doing like the second, third and forth time(lifting the sustain before playing the next chords and bring it down after you play the next ones)?

I would love to learn a solo piano arrangement (no vocals) for the song: "Without You" by Harry Nilsson that captures the feeling of the record. Of course, the arrangement would have to be modified/tinkered with because on the record the piano is used to accompany the vocal. Same thing for "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. What if you have a lot of notes to play by the right hand? Would it sound good?

Song you should teach to play is “Gut feeling” by Ella Mai. Doesn’t sound difficult but for a beginner it would be cool.
