I second this. Definitely helped I was frustrated maybe my vst setting is wrong that there should be a let ring option somewhere because the sustain is cutting off asap as I release. Turns out it's just a matter of technique.

It was my lifelong dream to learn how to play this beautiful instrument but I never had time. Now that I am 55 years old and basically doing everything part-time: work, play, exercise, etc... I tried taking lessons with an experienced piano teacher and quickly got discouraged because it was overwhelming and I don't understand music theory or how to read music. Great explanation and visual for using the sustain pedal. However, pedal technique also requires keeping the heal on the floor and toes in contact with the pedal. This is so important for pedal control and eliminating leg muscle fatigue. Thanks for sharing.
I agree! Unfortunately with the camera setup on my foot in my studio in order to get a good shot to show the timing I couldn't have the proper alignment with my heel on the ground (i mention it 2:12 - 2:28) Thanks for the kind words!

okay, i watched a couple of people trying to explain this but i never got how to use the pedal. now i think i do thanks to this talented teacher-man! now let my body figure it out too, somehow.. few minutes later: it took only a minute or two two get a feel for where the other half of the trick lies. gotta be punctual with your foot going both up _and_ down. what helped me was being given those cords to be able to hear it sound bad and practice right away, notes for the cords are C E G > E G B > D F# A obviously a total noob here, but is it not a sign of a good teacher when even case like me figures this out eventually? 🥳

My piano teacher recommended that I use the sustein pedal, but I wanted to challenge myself and use legato all the time, but it didnt ork well When I started using the pedal she probably noticed that i was using it, but she didnt commented on that, she only said that my sound was richer, full. So now I am using it pretty mucho all the time, but sometines ii forget to release it and the sound it too muddy. So now I am practicing the lifting. It is not so easy . Thanks the tutorial

Hi! Great question. If you are pulsing on the same chord, most of the time you want to just keep the pedal held down while you pulse. You only need to lift when you land on a new chord. There are rare cases where you want a more detached staccato sound, but in that case you would just not use the pedal at all (pulsing with the pedal wont do anything to the sound, but will tire out your ankle!) Think of it this way: the piano sounds better with the pedal. BUT, when you *change* chords you need to wipe the slate clean with a pedal lift so notes that clash with eachother dont ring out together. Hope that helps!
Hi Nate! Excellent tutorial! All your tutorials are excellent! I bought a sustain pedal for my keyboard some time ago, but I don't use it (instead relying on the sustain built into the keyboard settings). Why am I not using the pedal? Because the darn thing "runs away"! I notice that you have rug/carpet under your setup (love the socks! 😍)...do you have any suggestions for those of us who are on a more slick surface to keep the pedal in place? I did see a tip to turn it sideways, but it feels awkward to me and it still travels, but just to the side now. Help! I know my playing would sound much better with the pedal. Thank you!
A carpet/rug is helpful, but if it has a slick bottom perhaps attaching some rubber or similar. Many sustain pedals (including my own) come with rubber on the bottom that prevents the sliding. Good luck!
@PianowithNate It has little rubber "feet" (like tiny round rubber discs), but not enough to keep it in place on a tile floor. I think that part of the problem is that the pedal itself doesn't weigh anything. I will look into some sort of rubber or something. Thank you!
Sadly a heavy action on a grand piano has damaged my right hand foot, prolonged playing caused a ganglion cyst, been surgically enucleated but it can easily return, never use bare feet either. I have a few different size wooden wedges to permanently engage the pedal, it's not ideal but I'm not quiting my music no matter what, if there's a will there's a way.
I have a question, how do you manage to time the pedaling correctly when you're playing very fast notes. For example 16th notes at 100bpm? I'm having this issue where my finger releases off the key faster than my foot can actually release the pedal and push down again. As a result when i try to pedal while playing these notes it sounds like my notes are being cut off, like stacotto notes, but i can still hear the note ringing.
Hey! So what you need to do depends on the song, but you should not be pedaling every 16th note in almost any case. You usually can keep the pedal down as long as the big picture context (i.e. the full measure) still has the same underlying chord (as determined by the left hand bass notes/chord). If you are playing a melody that sounds muddy when the notes start ringing out together, only left the pedal as often as you need to clear that mud (maybe every few 1/4 note beats), OR, dont use the pedal there and work to play the melody in a very connected, legato way. Hope that helps!

Practice slow and you'll get it to click into place even when you play fast!
