This is a very simple exercise I use in lessons which yield IMMEDIATE RESULTS every time with pedaling (I'm not exaggerating). I remember almost crying at my lesson when I was 9 years old when my teacher was teaching me the concept of "syncopated pedaling" haha. To save my own students from this humiliation, I invented this simple exercise. I hope it can help each of you understand and master the fundamentals of pedaling if you're struggling with it :)
This exercise is the difference between smooth transitions and either choppy music or muddy music (holding the pedal down too long). I'm guilty more of the latter. This is a great exercise, Josh! Thank you.
Have tought myself to play the piano but never knew how to operate the pedal properly (so everything I played never sounded really good). Thank you so much for your video, it helped me so much!!!!
Subscribed! I recently inherited an upright piano and I haven’t played since I was little; I never knew what the pedals did! Now at 25 years old, I thought it best to try and understand the use of the pedals, as well as learning the piano all over again. This has helped greatly! Thankyou 🌻
Thanks Josh! Game changer video. This isn't basketball, I'm not shooting a layup, the foot does not go up with the hand. Exactly what I needed, and the difference completely changes and eases the flow of the piece.
This is the first time an "IMMEDIATE RESULTS" video actually works immediately :)) This helped me a lot with the thing I hated the most which is pedaling, don`t know for why reason I found it very difficult :) thanks a lot for this tips and everything else from your channel !
I'm a beginner and I'm currently playing the lyrical waltz by Shostakovich, I was struggling to coordinate the pedal with the hands and you just uploaded this video, thank you very much!
a good tip I figured was when ur pedaling, if u have to change another phrase imagine that your pressing on the keys is what lifts it or pushes it down kinda like a button
I used to teach syncopated pedal also using a scale but never realized students could cheat by holding notes with their fingers! Thank you so much! Your idea of playing with only one finger or octaves is very clever and helpful!
I've just discovered your channel and I love your lessons. It's not only for beginners, you can be an intermediate pianist who wants to improve his playing. Thank you for sharing this with us !
Great insight from this video. i knew for sometime that my pedaling was wrong and was slightly confused when it came to using it. i also had the suspicion on how to properly use it and this video basically ascertained my initial thoughts
This was great, thanks, I have been researching "what is half pedaling for the piano?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (search on google ) ? It is an awesome one of a kind product for discovering how to learning piano fast without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend got cool results with it.
Many thanks, I've been looking for "what do the foot pedals do on a piano" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (search on google ) ? It is a great one off product for discovering how to learning piano fast minus the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my partner got excellent success with it.
Wow! Thank you for this lesson. I've been having problems with that awful pedal break! Specifically in the Raindrop Prelude. I can't quite get the up down to work. I'll practice this method. It makes sense to me where before it didn't.
Just realized I was not subscribed. Sorry about that I feel like you have deserved my sub for a while now. Always helping me on the piano journey. Great content my friend.
do you put your foot down straight away after lifting from the pedal… I mean is it split second? I do wish you could have demonstrated showing your footwork on the pedal.
Haha it's easy to mess it up in thicker textures...that's why I love just using one finger so there's no possibility of cheating, and not letting things get too complex :) Keep working at it and you'll have it mastered in no time
I'm a total beginner and i don't understand what you mean when you say up and down or change pedal What do you mean when you say(change pedal) and what do you mean when you say(up and down) Please can you explain
Hi, how do you use pedal with broken chords and melody playing on the right hand? It sounds very muddy even though I am releasing it every time I change broken chord... Maybe has to do with the melody?
quick question : do i have to push the sustain pedal all the way down or mid way down, or a third down, etc... how far down do i have to push the sustain pedal when playing different pieces because sometimes pushing it all the way down makes certain notes unclear. hope you can answere my question
This an awesome tutorial and will definetly help me 100%, so thank you for that!!! But honestly im so immature that I giggle everytime you say anything in relation to "the d". But thank you! U got a new sub :)
Pedal yourself to victory in the bike race of the century with Dr Josh Wright. A more serious notion - The pedal extension that came with my digital keyboard has started to have issues and the pedal drops out in weird places or doesn't activate at all, regardless of how hard or long I press it. Luckily I had an extra sustain pedal that came with the piano. I just don't like it because even though it has grips at the bottom it tends to shift. Plus it is shaped totally differently to the normal piano pedal. I'm also practicing for my very first music academy entrance exams and I feel like my keyboard just isn't enough for the beethoven piano sonata (19) I need to play. So yeah, these have been my random piano struggles for the couple months of yore.
@@martinihenry9792 Well I'm afraid I had blood pressure issues during the first exam Day and I couldn't do the entire theory test let alone perform anything. It has been over a year now and I've given music academy and other future education options a lot of thought and I've decided to maybe do something a little more boring but financially safer. Having said that I have become if anything more serious with practising. Plus I've got a teacher again so there's definitely more structure and pressure to do better. I also need to focus on getting my health back on track and losing quite a bit of weight. Maybe next year things will look a bit brighter and I can make the final decision? I certainly won't stop playing the piano now, I'm totally hooked. And it has taken me, what, 20 years to come up with this conclusion? I'm a slow learner.

@Maikind K. Thanks as always Jim! I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery my friend.
Very nice exercice ! I think it would be nice to actually see your foot move, if you do more pedaling videos.
@@joshwrightpiano So "not sync" is the key:First finger, then pedals?

Thank you so much, have done it in a wrong way for years despite having classes for 10 Years
you should switch your teacher...

this is golden, lovely video
One of the best advices (if not THE BEST) I've never had! Completely change my playing. Thank you very much!

Glad you enjoyed it Tyler!
Thanks for this pedal tip, Josh. I was deliberately looking for info about a muddy sound.
Thank you so much, I played wrong for years ! Thanks to you I can play the right way :D
Wow thank you so much! I’m so glad to finally learn how to pedal correctly. You made it really easy to understand too
You know you are a pro when you can pedal wrong intentionally after you know how to pedal.

Thanks for the video 👍
Hi Josh, do you have a video on how to use pedal when playing fast? I feel like left hand right hand and foot combination times speed is killing me 😝

Hey Josh can you make a video on Bach’s prelude and fugue no 5 book 1. I find it hard to play since you use your fingers 345 often.
I definitely have some more Bach preludes and fugues to tackle for future videos :)
Thank you! I could never get the timing right.

Not sure if you got your answer yet, but depending on the piano, the note sustains longer the further you push the pedal down.
Really nice Josh - thanks for this.
Your 2nd tip is more mind blowing than the main one, never know where to place the heel

Jesus I be leaving some gaps in all my songs but Imma start doing all chord inversions while practicing my pedaling.
Are you aware of any high quality keyboards or digital pianos that will show you the chord that you are playing on the LCD screen?
love ur vids! can u do a video on the moonlight sonata mov 3 :)
Jerry Zhang he already has one
Lol I was playing this exact part of Clair de lune right before I watched this video
...epic hair!!!😍

Do you accept students?
You like like if Mark Hamil and Chopin had a baby lol
should show your feet working the pedal while playing notes

This is a good tutorial Josh. However you didn't tell us which pedal you're actually using in the examples.
Is it his hair?
Yes
5 years of piano and I find out I'm using pedal wrong haha
Why do you look like chopin in that suit
we both desperately need a haircut :) #covidlockdown
I guess think of it as a booby trap trip wire. As soon as you trip the note the pedal goes off.
