    This doesn't work on a 2009-2012 Subaru Outback/Legacy. Those have the EJ253 instead of FB25 shown in this tutorial. 2009-12 uses a 14mm drain plug, takes 5W30, and the oil filter is installed from the bottom where it's kinda tucked in above the exhaust. Crush washer is still needed though.

    I put the fumoto drain valve on mine. Love it. No crush washer again just flip and drain.

    Good video. Especially liked the information on crush washer orientation. I like to remove the filler cap and dipstick before draining the oil; I think opening up both "ports" helps the oil to drain a little better (gravity); it also helps to lower the passenger side a little bit to get as much oil out of the drain pan as possible. Subaru dealer recommended using 5w30 oil to reduce oil consumption and to also make sure PVC valve is changed at prescribed intervals.

      It looks like the plug is on the driver's side of the oil pan (unless I'm looking at it wrong, or the image is backwards.) Wouldn't you want to lower the driver's side of the car so that the oil drains towards the plug/drain?

    For someone who has 2010-2014 Subaru Outbacks. Oil capacity is 4.2 qts (4.0L). Subaru OEM filter that sits underneath between the exhaust cross pipe is not easy to tighten with wet slippery hands, oil will leak. Dont ask me how I know. The proper torque rating is 10 N.m which is 88-90 Inch Lbs. The filter gasket is "P" type, similar to a "O" ring with flat back.

    Great video! Easy explanation,, what about the transmission oil,, ? Do you have Recommendations or mor info..?

    • @CoolStuffGuysLike
      @CoolStuffGuysLike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! If you have the CVT like mine, you do not need to service the transmission fluid. I believe all of the newer 4 cylinders have to CVT. Seems like the general consensus is that changing the CVT fluid does more harm than good since it risks introducing contamination and it really shouldn't change viscosity much like a traditional style transmission will over time.

    • @santinisoriano6628
      @santinisoriano6628 ปีที่แล้ว

      OEM fluids and filters. You cant go wrong that. Shop oaper towels and break cleaners. Wipe off everything around your working part to avoid contamination of cvt fluid. Do it inside your garage if possible.

      I think Subaru recommends Mobil 1 but I think they are all pretty much the same and meet the same standards. I usually buy whichever one is on sale at Advance auto. If you want to splurge on oil, then I think AMSOIL is about as good as it gets. They rate theirs for 15k+ miles.

    Do you really need a new crush washer

    • @CoolStuffGuysLike
      @CoolStuffGuysLike  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Subaru claims you do but I have never actually seen any oil drip from the drain plug when I used to not replace the crush washer. I think most Subarus burn more oil than average and they like to tell you that it is just the crush washer. If you ever see a drip under your car I would say maybe the crush washer would be the first place to look. You can buy a box of them that will last many years so I just did that to be safe.

    Do you have the excessive oil consumption problem with his model year?

    • @CoolStuffGuysLike
      @CoolStuffGuysLike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does burn a lot of oil. I burn about two or three quarts per 7500 miles and have since I got it. I run 5w 30 High Mileage now instead of 0w20 which helps quite a bit. It now burns closer to 1.5 or two quarts per 7500 miles.

    • @boogietronix
      @boogietronix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With living in a colder climate and doing mostly short trips, I noticed my oil getting very dirty fast so I do my changes at 7000 kms (4600 miles). Always get my oil in bulk when it's on sale so including OEM filter/washer, I pay under $50CAD/change doing it myself. I know Subaru says 7500 miles but I prefer getting that dirty oil out a lot sooner!

    • @njenga.n.n
      @njenga.n.n 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boogietronix same for me. I deal in spare parts. I service my car after every 7000kms. I use Eco 5 caltex 5w-30.. I'm in an equatorial region. 0w-20 isn't good in this region coz the coldest temp is 12 above 0 and we have days that are hotter past 34 degrees Celsius. You'd actually be burning oil instead of fuel. 5w-30 is the best oil here. The crush washer is a gimmick coz majority of Subaru burn oil

      @@njenga.n.n Good point. I have switched to 5W30 in our Ottawa summers as I was getting some knocking and it has cleared things up... The 0W20 is just too thin above 25C IMHO.
