  • THERE WAS AN INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION FROM CEBU AT OUR BEACH HOUSE... AND HE WAS COOKING!
    Turns out Monching is actually a international dragonboat competitor... and his team "PADS" from Cebu recently won many events at a competition in Florida last July! No wonder this guy is a champion at dragonboat... he is jacked! In this video, we get a visit from the famous "Single Engineer", who is now "Happy Engineer". We sort out some beach home projects, talk about life, and have a great Filipino barkada cooking night.
    What was on the menu?
    Lobsters!! The "Fake Jandee"... whipped up a great recipe, and we all had a good time chilling at the beach house at night.
    International champion from Cebu, good vibes and food, and another day of Province life here in the Philippines at our beach home...

    Kulas, I love watching you guys cook & eat together. Bret seems to be enjoying his stays there in Cateel.
    When you were talking about Dragon Boat, I got very interested, because before I retired from work, I used to organize & set up our own Dragon Boat Team @ Kiwanis Lodge, a nursing facility for seniors, here in Nanaimo, B.C. We were a team of nurses & caregivers. We lasted for 9 yrs. We were a mixed group of men & women. We actually got gold in our 4th year. We had silver & bronze in some years, but getting a gold medal was very exciting & memorable. Our team did not compete on National level, but some teams did go to Singapore, Cebu ( Philippines ), Italy, & other places.
    To fundraise for our team every year, was hard work, but it was for a good cause. We were able to buy a new breast cancer detecting machine here in our Nanaimo Regional Hospital. A year or two before I retired, I tried to put the team back, but most of us nurses & caregivers have back injuries, & busted shoulders over the years of working in the healthcare.
    Dragon boating is sure a good workout sport & fun! Take care you guys, & thanks for sharing this vlog!

    Oh I recognize the PADS Dragon Boat Team. I have seen them several times practicing in the Mactan Channel from the bridge on the way to Cebu.
    Regarding the style of windows that you have in the house, the spelling for that is Jalousie, but sometimes it gets.pronounced as 'jealousy', that was why Bret was confused when he heard the name haha. Even I used to think it was spelled Jealousy as a kid.

    It's not jealousy, Bret was right, its Jalusi/jalousy. And that's so smart of Bret how he store the cool breeze from dusk till dawn & block the heat when it's day time.

    • @ziggarillo
      @ziggarillo ปีที่แล้ว +4

      From the French "Jalousie" meaning jealousy. But originally covering up or screening , more applicable to venetian blinds really.

    • @whitepouch0904
      @whitepouch0904 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s the same thing but the jalousy is French from Italian word geloso. It means to screen out jealous people and neighbors. I searched for it more than decades ago because I was also confused why they sounded and spelled similar and guessed that it maybe something to prevent jealous or peeping and nosey neighbors and I was right 😅

    • @ziggarillo
      @ziggarillo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@whitepouch0904 The jealousy meaning came after the covering up meaning. So it was never to protect from "jealous people" it just meant " privacy" then people who were obsessed with "privacy" or protecting their possessions were called jealous.
      They would have been called " privacy windows" if they were English.

    Instead of wood, you can use bamboo Kulas, the thick-walled kind. It resists salty mist better than wood. Immerse it in the sea for maybe a week to let the salt seep into the bamboo and this will repel wood borers and termites. Our neighbor's decorative bamboo fence still stands for years.

    Dakpan (Dakop + an) = Caught. Captured. Arrested. Detained.
    Sakpan (Sakop + an) = Caught. Caught in the act. Intercepted.
    They're near-synonyms really. But Sakop is used more in the context of catching someone red-handed.
    While Dakop is used more in the context of _physically_ catching someone or something.
    If a witness sees a thief in the act of stealing - Sakpan and Dakpan can both be used. But Sakpan is more common.
    When a thief is caught and detained - only Dakpan is applicable.
