FILIPINO SARDINE NOODLE SOUP - Davao Province Beach Home (Life In Mindanao)

  • FILIPINO SARDINE NOODLE SOUP!? Yup, this is a classic dish, and one that "Happy Engineer" decided to make for us.
    On this Philippines Beach Home day... we start off with the canned sardines, locals noodles, and positive cooking vibes. After hanging around at home, I go for a quick run, and then find myself desperate for a coconut! Luckily we have many coconut trees here in the Philippines, and at our beach home.
    Province life really is relaxed at times, and I hope that these raw life days give a positive example for what the majority of Mindanao is... beautiful, peaceful, positive, and full of great vibes! We head to the hot spring, and I find myself jamming out with some locals... and finishing with some Ube Cream Liquor!
    Another Philippines Beach Home Province day in Cateel, Davao Oriental, Mindanao!
    POWER ON!

    Hello Kulas! You probably won't even get this, but here I am trying, because why not, and I think this is some story to share in your blog that I watch daily with my 1 yr old daughter Blakeley. So, here we go.
    When you were singing 'Kapayapaan,' my daughter danced to it, that being said, I looked up the song and I've never heard of the band, nor remember Tropical Depression. I have to add, I was born and raised in Manila (Parañque) and moved to the U.S. when I was 13 y/o. That was 23 yrs. ago.
    Going back to my story, so we listened to Kapayapaan, and finished watching this episode. I then shut my music on my phone off. And went about on changing my daughter. As I was doing this, Tropical Depression's song 'Ala-ala,' came on, LOUD, without me being near my phone. You have to listen to it, to understand what I'm about to tell you.
    My father passed 1 yr ago. He loves Filipino bands, like Asin and such, which represents the Philippines and its roots, just like how I feel about Tropical Depression. Just so happens that the song that came on talks about losing someone. That even when they've gone wherever, that the memories we make with them will always be in their memory - Ala-ala. I bust in tears, as this happened.
    I wasn't scared, but rather, as you may know, in the Filipino culture, this is is a sign of someone we love who passed, just saying hello - they're fine. So, I just want to share that story with you. Thank you, because if it weren't for your post of this band, this would've not happened. Again, from the bottom of my heart, Maraming salamat Kulas. Power on!

    You are getting better each day speaking and learning Bisaya Kulas! Lata in english is tin/can, while delata refers to all canned goods. While lata, when you are referring to something that is over cooked or over ripe, you pronounce it w/ a stress on the last syllable (ta)..Bisaya words can have the same name or spelling, but differs on how you pronounce them..😊❤️

    Oh my gosh, Kulas! I havent had tinapa (what we call sardinas) and odong since I was a kid! I think that dish is mostly Bisaya because in all my years here in Luzon (I was born and raised in Mindanao), I could never find odong anywhere in the supermarkets. I miss those noodles! It really is a reminder of childhood. 🥰 Thank you Kulas!

    *CORRECTION:* Latâ (rotten/squished) and Lata (can) are pronounced very differently. Lata (can) is actually Spanish. "De lata" just means "of the can". The word can be used on its own (without the "de"). Again, remember that Philippine languages have a hidden consonant: the glottal stop. Latâ (rotten) ends in a glottal stop, whereas Lata (can) does not.
    If you don't know what the glottal stop is, it's when the vowel is cut off abruptly. Like the middle sound in English "Uh-Oh". You also say it constantly in English, like when you say "Cat" but your mouth remains open at the end and your teeth don't actually touch your tongue to form a "T" sound (so it sounds like Ka'), you're actually making a glottal stop.
    There are numerous examples of this. Where they look similar when spelled, but mean very different things when spoken. Where the stress is placed on the syllables is also important. Other examples in Bisaya
    Basâ = Wet ; Basa = Read
    Salô = To catch ; Salo = To share
    Tulô = To drip ; Tulo = Three
    Akò = Mine ; Ako = Me
    Pasâ = Bruise ; Pasa = To pass
    Tubò = To grow ; Tubo = Pipe ; Tubó = Sugarcane
    Balâ = Inaccurate, Incompetent ; Bala = Bullet, ammunition
    The main problem is that the Philippines does not normally write these accent marks. Since everyone already knows what they mean by context. They're only written in formal language books and whatnot. It is sometimes represented as a dash like in "to-o" ("to believe") or "pa-a" ("legs"), but only if they're in the middle of the word.
    In other languages, the glottal stop is also usually not represented. In Japanese, for example, in which almost all words end in a glottal stop, it is not written down at all.
    In Indonesian and Malaysian, the glottal stop is represented by a K at the end of the word. So Indonesian Datuk for example is pronounced exactly the same as Filipino Datù, both mean "chieftain".
    In Polynesian languages, the glottal stop is represented as the ʻokina, which is like a reverse apostrophe. You can see this in the proper name of the main island Hawaiʻi, which is pronounced Hawai-ee.
