Seems like the smart thing to do is to download the games to the external HDD and then copy them to the internal SSD when needed. That way there is no need to transfer back and fourth and you benefit from the faster transfer speeds. Thanks for helping me realize that.

Read speeds are typically faster than wrote speeds on most hard drives. That would explain your faster transfer back to the internal drive. I bought the expansion card for mine and will use an external SSD to store games I’m not currently playing.

Here I thought 511GB internal would be plenty going into my first Xbox experience (only had a switch before and games are much smaller lol), little did I know that I would fill up internal storage with only room for 3 games 😖. Can you play optimized games on the expansion card slot storage, I.e. the proprietary connector? I have to imagine they build that expansion slot for something more import than what USB 3.0 can muster.

Great video and I myself use two Seagate backup Hubs connected to my Series X, one for 360 games the other for all others.
I think the coping back to internal is faster because you are coping back to a ghost space already copied from, this is not a technical answer just my thought on the why. I completely agree with going with the SeagateHD as it is build to be copied and read from multiple times and will last longer if reading and writing are going to be a constant.

So I was wondering if the same scenario with my PS5 applies to the Xbox Series S I’ve just got in my hands today:
    - PS5 External SEAGATE HDD 2TB hooked up to play PS4 titles (with performance boosts applied to them)
    - Xbox Series S SEAGATE HDD 2TB hooked up to play Xbox One titles (with performance boosts applied to them)
My question resides on the second scenario, which I would like to confirm before buying the HDD itself.
Will the games perform better? As they do on my PS5 from its external HDD?
Keep in mind that I don’t care for loading times, only performance boosts.
    Thank you!

In game load speeds will be better off an ssd too. It’s not just the transfer speeds from external to internal. Looks like based on your test it takes about twice as long on average, probably can apply that to everything. Launching games, loading maps maybe even texture pop in sometimes, but the first 2 as well as transfers will be twice as long on the external hdd versus ssd. Personally tho I don’t play enough games to warrant more than an extra 1tb of storage. AND I have fiber internet so if I needed to redownload a game I could probably redownload it faster than you could transfer from your external hdd, this isn’t black and white 😁

Depending on how big your library is, you can store all of your Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games on your external SSD and save the internal SSD solely for Series X|S optimized games.

the smaller game is faster because of file size and DRAM cache on the SSD. The larger game has files that would be too large to load into the DRAM cache, and will be directly written to the SSD from the source drive. The transfer speed between the DRAM cache and the SSD is incredibly fast, this is why it's there acting as a buffer. You will typically only see the rated transfer speeds when using small files that can fit into the DRAM cache that is built into an SSD, but not all SSD's have that cache. As for the writing back to the console drive, my assumption is that the console never truly DELETES the data from the cells on the drive. Normally, even on a PC, there is an artificial 0 placed over a cell when you delete stuff, and is later re-written when new data is presented. This is why "formatting" drives for selling a computer can be risky if you select the "quick format" option. This is how drive recovery works. I'm probably wrong there, but it's my only guess.

Instead of moving the last generation game cant you just play the game off the hard drive instead of taking up more space in the xbox its self????????

Indeed, you can play any previous generation game directly off the external hard drive.

You may have to format the drive first, but yes. All my previous generation games are stored and played directly off the external hard drive.
