Xbox Series X: What's The Best SSD Option For Back Compat Xbox Games?

  • Do you really need to use the precious storage space of the Xbox Series X internal drive for running backwards compatible games? Or will standard SSDs connected via USB still do a good job? In this video, Rich runs a range of Xbox One X titles on the internal drive and stacks them up against SATA, NVMe and mechanical hard drive alternatives. The results are fascinating!
    BTW Rich says here that a PCIe 4.0 NVMe is essential for PC gaming - he misspoke here: a good SATA drive is still great in the here and now!
    The Sabrent SATA to USB adapter mentioned in the video is this one:
    UK: amzn.to/34eclsJ
    US: amzn.to/35kFkuo
    If you prefer a cased drive, here is a USB 3.1 10Gbps enclosure:
    UK: amzn.to/3dsCVBk
    US: amzn.to/3dubqHz

    One thing to keep an eye out for when buying the SATA-USB adapters is to find one that supports UASP. That probably explains why the cheap offbrand adapter was slower than the Sabrent adapter. UASP is an optional part of the USB 3 standard and Microsoft never officially stated whether any Xbox console supported UASP but it would help explain the improved speeds with the Sabrent adapter.

    Despite Richard's very clear disclaimer that none of these drives are taking advantage of the Velocity Architecture, which is basically required to get the most out of the internal SSD, I don't see it taking long for people (or sites that don't understand things) to start saying "the SSD in the Series X is no faster than a normal external one".
    I dunno maybe this time I'll be surprised. Either way, I'm glad how clear Richard was about this in the video - it's amazing how often this stuff gets misquoted and taken out of context.

    • @SIPEROTH
      @SIPEROTH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SIPEROTH lol, the game needs to be written for it or at least setup to exploit some of its advantages.

    • @RichardLarge88
      @RichardLarge88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SIPEROTH I don't have super deep or precise knowledge of this so hopefully someone more knowledgeable on the matter can step in and better explain or correct me, but as I understand it, load times aren't exclusively made up of just pulling assets from storage. The assets are probably coming in very fast but it's going to bottlenecked elsewhere. I imagine in part this will come from the fact that games won't have been designed to take advantage of the hardware accelerated nature of the Velocity Architecture meaning that while IO operations themselves are likely hardware accelerated, the fact the game's code is unaware of it means it won't be running all the non-asset-loading stuff in parallel. So you're seeing some advantage of the raw speed of the new NVMe but as we can't see explicitly what's happening under the covers during a load screen, the actual speed of the "loading assets from storage" part is being masked by other things.
      On top of that games that are aware of VA that can fully take advantage of it will have been designed with it in mind. Yeah, they'll obviously get some natural advantage from the faster raw IO, but they'll also be able to benefit from the hardware accelerated decompression (meaning a) the CPU doesn't have to get involved and b) they can effectively load data much more quickly the raw IO speed of the NVMe would indicate). Also because they'll be pulling assets in so fast, there's less of a need to load everything up front - they can rely on that crazy speed to load things on the fly.

  • @MrDarkSephirot
    @MrDarkSephirot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +107

    I think I might have the clue for the disparities in performance. When writing a huge amount of data into the SSD (170 GB Call of Duty) the limitations of the "value oriented" 870 QVO appear. While it has DRAM, unlike other cheap SATA SSD's, it has only so much fast SLC cache (apparently 78 GB) and when that is exhausted the writing speed dramatically drops, even below USB max speed. That's because the main storage is kicking in, and it's of the slow QLC type (4 bits per cell). Instead, the Samsung pm961 NVME makes use of the older, less dense, but faster TLC NAND memory (3 bits per cell).
    When writing smaller amounts of data, or when reading, this problem is less apparent. In fact, I speculate the reason for faster loading times with the SATA SSD might be the interface: NVME is a faster but different protocol, whereas the conversion between SATA and USB protocols is more straightforward as far as I know. Needless to say, when loading a game the sequential speed is capped by the USB 3.1, and not the SSD's be them SATA or NVME.

    This affirms my contention. Based on my experience with working with video files that often easily exceed 250GB the ability to edit and read that data the difference isn't massive between a SATA SSD and internal NVMe. The CPU is the biggest difference, followed by the flash/memory controller and the type of memory used. A drive with a higher sustained read rate will provide a better experience with larger file sizes than one with a slightly faster max read/write.

For games that don't use those advances (i.e. OG, 360, and One games), then you can settle for an external SSD and be totally fine.

    Thanks, Rich. This is exactly what I wanted to see from you on this as I already use a 1TB SSD on my X1X and planned on moving it to XSX. It's a shame that they don't offer USB 3.2 (aka 3.1 gen2) to get that 10Gb/s bandwidth for externals. It would help that NVMe drive shine over the SATA one.
    Also, I heard you mention how overloaded your 5 man team will be with the launches. If you want extra help capturing and/or analyzing the data, I have quality capture equipment, almost 60TB of storage, PS5 and XSX on order, an extensive tech background and a ton of extra time currently. Let me know if you'd like help. I'd be happy to do so even if only silently, behind the scenes.

      I believe we'd see more performance out of a Samsung 961 NVMe drive if there was a 10Gb/s bus as the SATA drive is limited to 6Gb/s already and a 961 would max out a 10Gb/s bus on sustained reads (and I assume Zen2 is more than powerful enough to decompress data fast enough to not limit the load speeds)

      Basically "USB 3.1 Gen 1" limits us to around 500MByte/s (considering the overhead being about 20%)... in other words about the same speed as SATA 3.
      Too bad... there is no reason to use a NVMe SSD (i did it too btw) with an XBoX console.
      I guess people can just get a fast (non QVO) SATA SSD. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I have only one question over the years. Who are the blokes that put a dislike on these videos? I mean seriously. What on earth are their demands?

      For real I always wonder that. Wish there was a list of those accounts.

      I have listened to videos on my phone in the past where a stray touch screen activation has led to dislikes. That might account for a few but doubt it will be the cause of the majority

      @@someguy7564 I can confirm your description right here. Even I myself rushed to put a like on the video but suddenly shifted towards dislike. But I can detect that and actually you can find that out straightaway.

    Thanks! External ssd with quality bridge all day! Also the tease “Testing the velocity archetecture on next gen games” looking forward to it like everyone else I suspect when the embargo lifts!

    Anyone else laugh when he called out IGN for their 'slightly embargo breaking maneuver'? I think this is evidence that the SSD/storage in detail was under embargo, that Austin Evans video where he made a big deal about a gizmo that wasn't supposed to be there...that was just the Seagate Expansion.

      I remember when Ryan first posted his video without realizing he was showing the 802 GB lol.

    Wonderful tests - it's great seeing the hard data on this. The reality is that load times in games are a function of a number of factors, which, to keep this simple is a combination of loading assets into memory and initializing the game's code. Until the advent of SSDs and NVME drives, the clear bottleneck in loading games was the poor read performance of mechanical hard drives to load assets into memory. The thing is, and this is something many PC Gamers already know from experience, is that at some point pure read performance stops being the bottleneck at which point increases in read performance have a negligible impact on load times. This is why on a PC you will see few truly tangible differences in gaming load times when you switch from an SSD to an NVME drive. To use an analogy that I think is helpful, imagine that loading time is the speed at which a bathtub can both be filled with a certain amount of water and how quickly it can drain the same amount of water; so long as you can fill the bathtub with water as quickly as it can drain the water you won't finish the task any quicker than if the bathtub started the experiment completely full.
    The point of velocity architecture and some of the same steps Sony is taking is that they are trying to get around some of the CPU bottlenecks that exist with loading assets into memory. Something to realize, however, is that even with such advances you still end up hitting a very similar bottleneck: how quickly can the other aspects of loading a game state be accomplished? This is one of the reasons I have been a little skeptical about the hype surrounding the PS5's SSD. Yes, it is going to be faster than the SSD in the Xbox Series X, but at what point have you hit diminishing returns where extra read performance really does little to impact the process of loading a game. It will be very interesting to see how these new storage solutions and I/O tricks impact real world gaming (hopefully we will see some backwards compatible games include support for the Velocity Architecture or the same on the PS5 side to see how much that impacts real world loading times). The nice thing about this is that we are all winners in this generation of consoles, as regardless of what machine you buy you should be spending a lot less time watching a bar tick up to 100%.

    I've been using the Sabrent adapter for USB to SSD for years now. I salvaged a SSD from my old laptop, and it's been fantastic :D. Will be happy to be able to just plug it over to the new console.
