    Exercise programming is crap a lot of the times

    Great video guys! I am a CrossFit owner and I love the "SPORT" of CrossFit, but I am not blind to faults that can occur. The "METHOD" of CrossFit has been blurred by the flashiness of the CF Games, social media, and affiliates with poor coaching. We hold a standard for movements, educations, and progression that is not sexy, but leads to fewer injuries, longevity in fitness, and sustainable progress over time. Keep crushing it!

    So true! I am an RN & worked in the Neurology Dept. & many of our younger, otherwise healthy, "buff" stroke patients suffered vertebral or carotid dissections from crossfit or other such "weekend warrior" workouts. It can be very dangerous!

    Absolutely....I agree 100%. It’s a very inefficient way to train. Even if the client does manage to avoid injury, results will be sub par at best.

    I was into CrossFit for awhile and stopped bc people kept getting hurt and I knew my knees where going to end up being blown out

    I love you guys' stuff. I think those are arguments stem from not knowing CrossFit's SCALING OPTIONS. I'm a CrossFit trainer I'll never let a member lift a weight without proper form. For example, instead of snatching, I'd let them do plate ground to overhead. Instead of box jump overs, I'd let them do box step ups. Everything is scaled up or down depending on the athletes' skill and fitness level.

    Part 3..
    The best part of this video. Train lifts individually. Work on heavy lifts as it's own thing. Then run, row, Skierg, assault bike for a completely different workout. Get good at being great at everything independently then start to incorporate those things as a whole which is crossfit.

    This video was made with tact and I can appreciate it. The guy on the left seems to have a good understanding of mechanics and programming. Things to consider, while it is true that muscle failure can lead to injury, it is also where the greatest results occur. Which is why we train with dropsets, spotters, etc...so the goal is to safely step into muscle failure as much as possible, as safe as possible. This is where "scaling" comes in. Its either a topic you dont know about or chose to avoid, but scaling is when a coach changes the workout for an individual so that they can continue to do the workout safely but still reap the benefits. Whatever the case may be, the proof is in the pudding, Crossfit is still putting out more fit ppl than any other training program to date. Any counters?

      "Fit" is subjective...Also muscle failure is not necessary to get results, there's plenty of studies on that.

      No. Physically fit is not dependent on whim, i.e. subjective, i.e. dependent on consciousness. Fit means capable of performing basic human movements with optimal efficiency(speed, power, explosiveness, quickness, safe and effective).
      Fit is objectively measured in relation to the entity in question. The door is fit to block the door way when it is square, plumb, and does not have holes in it.
      Fit is relative, but it is not subjective. Fit is objectively measurable relative to specific principles derived from the nature of the entity in question.
      Concepts exist on a measurable continuum. For instance it is often said that love is subjective. But not so, lesser forms of love are admiration, respect, liking, affection, ect. at the opposite end of the spectrum is hate. The measurement here is in the intensity of the emotion. It is philosophical rationalism to expect a numbered correspondence. Man deals with reality with concepts, not with numbers.

    I believe corssfit is not the problem but understanding, and more importantly, the coaches are. CrossFit does have proper guidelines for safety and results. Has anyone here read their programming guide?

    I completely agree. I still love Crossfit but I am smart about programming. I try to keep it low impact and If I want to do an Olympic lift, I keep the volume low.

    I feel the same way about Olympic lifts. The only one I do is variations of the clean, and it's taken me two years to get to a point where I kind of look like I know what I'm doing. But that's what I love about it...I get a workout while trying to perfect the movement, and I'm never satisfied with it.

    I did crossfit with my neighbor, who invited me, did their routes, these a-holes knew It was my first-time doing it, showed me how to do it and gave me little to no warning. I did ALL the workouts and end up hurting for weeks. So find a good crossfit gym before you do it that starts you of slow. Or even better just don't do it #MAPS4life

    I do, I am a crossfitter, and yeah, I've injured myself practicing it and I constantly struggle with pains here and there, but truth is, all that struggle (plus laying almost dead after wods) has pushed me to focus on being healthier and optimizing my body, i've always been an active person, but until I wanted to perform my best in crossfit I made serious change on my diet, my sleep routine and my health awareness (I found you guys through this pursuit and love your content), I know this is very risky, but after being injured by motocross it feels like a walk in the park for me, all I can say is, crossfit is raising awareness and it has helped a lot of people become better than they were. I hope one day people stop fighting about which sport they do and start to learn the best on the sport of the other.

    Nothing wrong with circuit training for conditioning (as a separate thing besides your strength and hypertrophy training) IMO. I use some kind of giant set with technically not demanding stuff like farmer's/bear hug walks, pull ups, push ups, kettlebell swings or goblet squats, prowler pushes to build up my conditioning, it's more fun and gives me some additional volume for my strength work...

    Kipping pull-up is NOT a gymnastics move, proper gymnastics kip is a lot safer and targets different muscles.Gymnasts do strict pull-ups

      I think they said it was used as a transition to other moves in gymnastics. And that crossfit has taken this from gymnastics and made it into a move.

    What's your opinion on barbell/dumbbell "complexes" ala Vince Del Monte and Jeff Cavaliere? Performed for fat loss whilst building lean mass - stated by both that it is NOT crossfit.

    Jason Phillips' comments about 80% of crossfitters being in HPA dysfunction could not be more true. CF as a sport has misinformed the rest of the community and gotten away from optimized fitness and health. One more reason I think Dave Castro got booted.

    I do both. I don’t see the need of only picking one. Of course for MP, CrossFit is a sort of competition. Most people who shot down CrossFit only have one perspective and do not understand the methodology. Just by listening to this video, I knew they don’t understand it. Just throwing out opinions as other fitness “experts”...

    I know this isn’t a related question...
    But when do you know it’s time to switch programs. You guys said when you start to get efficient at said program.
    What would that mean for a hypertrophy, strength, power, and endurance program?

      Adrian Galvan you would decide your phases GENERALLY at the outset of your macrocycle. However, high level athletes that are in tune to their programming will feel out better to extend or contract certain phases. Also, in a powerlifting context, you'd have hyperytophy, strength and peaking phases. Watch the juggernaut video on phase potentiation for a few hints

      Colin Moreau My question is more of deciding when to stop and change the program. On the podcast, Mindpump said when you get good at the program. So what would that mean for a hypertrophy program? Once you’ve built muscle, go on to a strength program?

    Any lifting style can be considered dangerous as far as injuries are consurned. Is bench or squating 400 plus pounds safe, or running a marathon? Probably have a huge chance of injury.
    The point is working at YOUR potential. That falls in place with high intensity, your high intensity may be considered easy for someone else. The point is to advance, to push the limitations of your body, if not you fall into the just average category.

      Of course but it would have significantly less protein then a shake. Milk is about a gram of protien per ounce of milk, were a shake will at least 25 grams of protein a serving. If you're trying increase your protein intake on a budget milk is the cheapest, easiest way to do it.

    The Endurance portion mixed with Olympic lifting is meant to test you as an Athlete. If it was just a triathlon or Olympic lifting then that's what it would be and we already have that.
    This is Crossfit, not specificFit.
    As for the crossfit programming from headquarters. They set a base, or standard giving individuals a goal to set out and achieve. As for the super athlete, that's why we have EMOM, or For Time. Timed based workouts make it hard because your working at YOUR max potential no matter your athletic ability.

    If you start to fatigue, any exercise can become dangerous and lead to an injury. Obviously, there are some exercises where having bad form is more dangerous, like heavy compounds and olympic lifts, but even running with bad form can be dangerous and cause injuries. I don't see that as beeing something specific to crossfit.

      Yes, but the severity of performing something like a snatch, is almost instantaneous. Bad posture when running may develop over time, and can be addressed, but you're one way ticket to snap city will hit you faster than you can say WOD

      Sid Sloth well, that's true. But I still think the problem is to confuse profesional crossfit with recreational crossfit. Nearly any sport performed at high level is gonna have a high risk of injury. If you try to run 100m as fast as you can, and you're just a recreational runner, you' re probably gonna pull a hamstring or something. Same thing if you try to run a marathon at a decent pace. What I mean is that part of what a competitive enviroment is is doing pretty high technical skills at a high leve of fatigue; that happens in the competitive side of every sport. And the ones who can keep good form while fatiguing are usually the ones who win. Think about gymnasts. Their sport is also based on performing high technical skills while fatigued, and nobody says that gymnastics is dangerous because of that. Maybe is not the same level.of cardiovascular fatigue, but try to perform an iron cross or a maltese at the end of a 3 minute gymnastics routine, when your muscles are already full of lactic acid. The differenece between gymnastics and crossfit is that people take gymnastics much more seriously, and that there is really no such a thing as "recreational gymnasts". People should do he same thing with crossfit, but the problem is not the sport itself, is the people practicing it and not taking it seriously enough.

      Gymastics aren't trying to perform as many "can we even say reps" as possible, in a short amount of time.
      Their training is based on a routine, which they have perfected over time. It is not some off the cuff acrobatics that they're not familiar with performing when it comes to the competition.
      What they're saying in the video is, Crossfit has taken olympic lifts. Lifts which when people train can take upto 5 minutes or so to rest between sets, or they are doing speedwork, they perform them within their limits.
      The point they make is still valid. When you are performing the deadlift in a fatigued state, at a weight which if you're lucky could be easy for you, if you're unlucky could be very difficult for you (You'll have no say because it came from the WOD gods) then the probability for injury increases.
      The problem is not the sport, but the programming. It needs to cater more to people's individual abilities.
      If you're spewing after a workout, something's wrong. It's your body telling you "Hey You've over done it".
      Being competitive is all very well, but there are limits, and the variety of every person's limit is so unique that you can lose sight on that in your eagerness to be competitive.

      Sid Sloth yeah, that's basically what I'm saying. You shouldn't train always at the intensity at wich you compete. And you should escalate the exercises and the intensity according to your own level. That beeing said, if your sport asks you to perform a heavy snatch after a 400m sprint, then you should train for that in some way. Is it dangerous? Hell yeah. But so is lifting 900 pounds on your back. Maybe it's another kind of dangerous, but it's still dangerous. How do you train to achieve that level of performance the day of the competition is the key.

    "the purpose of the exercise" there is not such thing as existential purpose. Man chooses his values. Basic human movements, applied over a wide variety of training modalities, that is cross fit. And when done right there is no methodology better suited for an adoptive creature such as a human being.
