The AXE feature, of AUTO drag brake, was one of the main reasons for me to go for AXE instead of Castle.
Recently bought my second AXE. I'm very satisfied with this system.
Thanks for sharing this comparison, Francis.

Castle has an auto drag brake... you select the ramping speed and it engages the drag brake based off the motors speed and ramping effect. ie, crawling it instantly engages the drag brake, but at high speed in low gear it gradually ramps up the drag brake and actually brakes very close to how I would naturally... I use slow for 11t pinion and medium for 13t pinion.
Then, when I shift into high gear the drag brake is disabled along with instant reverse and I now have full control over the brakes.
The drag brake functionality along with excellent motor options, such as my hh puller pro 2700kv and puller pro r 4100kv rmotors that have insanely good torque modulation and smooth startup, is the reason why I went with the mamba x. For $10 more I got the mamba x and puller pro 2700kv setup. Oh, I also forgot to mention the expo throttle and brake curves. Really makes a great motor/esc combo into an exceptional one.

The ability to full stop was the reason I went with the AXE.. AFAIK no other system has been able to reproduce the full park feature of the AXE. Not only that but the amazing transition from Fully Parking to start and stop is simply jaw dropping, Incredibly smooth and consistent 100% of the times.

@@skirmich not sure if you ever owned a castle Mamba X but I was under the assumption ithe drag brake couldnt hold a truck still on hill, let me put it to you this way Never Believe what you read online. My Gen 8 crawler weighs in at 11.9 lbs with 2.2 wheels when I have my drag brake set full on it will hold my truck all day 2 ways til Sunday at any incline you can find. like I said after listening to & reading all the nonsense online I was worried the brake was very weak & nimble bu my goodness is that a bunch BS!! matter of fact I accidentally forgot to turn the brake down one day & I was cruising along going as fast as a Brushless crawler goes & when I let off the throttle the truck flipped 2 or 3 times head over hills. so don't believe what you read & hear online but one yourself & try it out & if you did own one & it wouldn't do that then send it in for repair or figure out your settings.. 🤘🏼

I use HW AXE with Auto in a TRX-6 and TRX- Sport. Workes really well but I will play a bit more with the drag brake force as soon as I get red of some snow and can start trailing and serious crawling.

Those are both really cool features!!! I actually like what the AXE does a little more with its Drag Brakes.
Except my Wraith, everything's Brushed... Purely financial reasons.

I'd agree with you based off RC Reviews review, but he didn't paint the full picture. It has the same auto drag brake feature, but RC Review is running 3 year old firmware that doesn't have the drag brake ramp setting. It instantly holds when crawling at low speed and ramps the drag brake when the rig is moving faster.
It also allows the drag brake to be proportionally removed using the throttle. So descending hills grabbing more throttle releases the drag brake more and more until it goes into a neutral roll state, then give a little more throttle and it will send power to the motor. This completely eliminates the need to adjust drag brake percentage.
RC Review isn't even utilizing the aux wire to its best ability. With a 2 speed rig you can have 1 gear have the ramping drag brake that is so easy to modulate and the other gear have no instantaneous reverse and no drag brake so you have full control over throttle and brake for high speeds.
If you care about crawling and what motor esc equipment to choose, then you should check out holmes hobbies youtube page. That guy is an encyclopedia for everything to do with these motors and setups, and engineers his own motors. I run his motors and they're amazing how "brushed" like they act, but with far more torque and rpm brushless brings.

I set my aux wire to racer/crawler.
    Brake ramp to med.
One position is crawler mode instant full drag instant rev.
Middle position delayed drag med ramping brakes and no instant rev
Position 3 no drag no instant rev
    Just regular brakes.

Does 200% drag brake on the AXE make a difference? For me, once it gets a little past 100, there really isn't a difference. 200 is like rock solid. I don't do too many hill crawls though, mostly level rocky terrain. Can you feel the difference?

Gotta get a crawler first, but I do have some experience with the Mamba X and love the advance aux wire features though I've only messed around with them in both my Summit and Yeti XL, though I will eventually get a dedicated crawler. Though out here in AZ, I think I prefer brushless (even if I have to go sensored), might not be as smooth as a brushed in the very low range, but they seem more efficient, and the ones I've used seem better protected against all the dust we have out here.

  • @KTMcaptain
    @KTMcaptain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

4:16 your castle link app is missing the drag brake ramp setting... In my experience the ramping works instantaneously at low speeds on rocks, no rolling back or forward, but ramps up the brake when traveling at high rpm. Maybe update your firmware...
**edit: version 2.06 adds drag brake ramp and doesn't require powering off and on to update settings. I've been running this firmware since day 1 of having the mamba x without issue and it's 1.5 years old so any issues would be apparent.

    • @KTMcaptain

What type of crawling do you want to do? trail and rock/ just trail/ just rock... is sand, water, mud, or pedestrians a factor?
Reason why I went with the trx6 is that it does everything reasonably well. It can crawl up there with expensive rigs, then it can unlock the drivetrain and shift to high gear and bomb trails.
