It honestly is. It's really amusing listening to him talk GOOD about something, because he doesn't make it sound good. "No complaints" - Neutral voice = High praise. "Excellent." - Neutral tone = Very high praise. "What we would hope for" = Meeting good standards. He very rarely *says* "excellent", and more often just uses information, to explain itself, instead of commenting outwardly about how good something is. So the end result being a very neutral "Actually good" is huge.
Steve is the best, if he says anything remotely neutral/good, you killed it. I love his approach to reviews. Brutal, honest. No fluff, this is how it's done Linus.
@@mellinu No, Steve have made it clear that it he buy this secretly and really there is no reason to not believe him. He does the same with every brand of PC he buy and 90% of the time, the comments are negative, so tel me how this is just marketing? Steve from Gamers Nexus is one of the most honest TH-cam reviewer I have seen. If you look the last review from StarForge, he showed some big problems of loose screws and the freaking peel forgotten on the SSD bracket, do you really believe that the company would have purposely send a PC with such problem for marketing review? Nah any company that send a PC for review would most certainly make sure that the build quality is as good as possible. Just look at other videos he made, reporting Asus costumer services issues, reporting problems with Intel CPU, reporting AMD Ryzen 9 7000 X3D CPU that was literally burning in socket and even buying some defective parts from costumers to send for analysis, reporting problem with NewEgg, etc. This is not marketing, this is investigative journalism and proper testing and reviewing. May I remember you that all those company are big tech company that invest lots of money in marketing on TH-cam? Everytime that Steve make such reports, he then refused any sponsorship from that brand until he his confident that the issue have been resolved.
My favorite part of these videos is how Asmon, while not being a builder, fully takes some of the responsibility when there are issues, and doesnt just immediately say the person who made the mistakes needs fired. THAT is proper business leadership, he clearly gets it.
Yeah i agree that it's the right attitude. Focusing on fixing the problem instead of blaming is way more productive. Finding who to blame is just childish and doesn't give you anything, and if the workers are afraid to do things wrong, you will most likely end up with an inferior product because people are afraid to ask, speak up and share their opinions because they are too afraid from backlash. "Hey it was your idea and it didn't work! So you're fired!"
Thermal paste: more than necessary is a good approach as long as you're not going overboard. Using more than necessary is way better than trying to walk the line of "just the right amount" and coming up short.
As long as it's non-conductive, anyway. Also, in theory, there could be such a thing as too thick layer of paste between the chip and the cooler, but with most modern cooler designs it will just be squeezed out.
The paint was masked improperly during coating. The split into the good paint is a dead give away. Not to mention the black line next to it is faded from surface preparation looks lightly sanded. It was masked properly for prep but not for paint.
@@blockboygames5956 I'm an industrial coatings inspector iv seen this stuff thousands of times. If he does read it id take a job doing QA on pc cases any day rather then climbing water towers and bridges haha.
My next PC will be a starforge PC. Not only was the 1st review good..but The starforge team made improvements based off that review and it reflects here. They have a great team and good leadership. Will be worth the $$$.
I mean it's logic, why would it cause problems? The mounting pressure alone will squeeze out any paste that isn't necessary. It just astounds me that someone had to test this to prove common sense. Glad that he did though as some people could clearly still stand to learn a thing or two.
Yeah especially because he has said he doesn’t like gifting a PC because now you’re that person’s tech support. He said he’ll only gift a PC if he thinks it’s good enough that it’s very unlikely to have issues. Huge win for Starforge.
I watch a ton of their reviews and for a prebuilt this is as good as it gets. Really happy for Asmon, all jokes aside, you can tell how important it is to him. And he's unironically a great business man.
Things to improve on, in order of importance: 1. Make sure to include ALL materials, motherboard standoffs, and instructions in the box... 2. QC-check and/or protect custom paint jobs with clear vinyl layer or other protection. 3. Make sure all drivers are installed in Device Manager before shipping. 4. Fan curve customization would be appreciated, for a better balance of noise and temperatures while using the PC.
Manufacturing engineer here. Do you guys have operating procedures with in-process inspections? Could help you to ensure quality builds with a less likely chance of you missing parts or critical components. Also it helps to do a process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA) to help you figure out what to de-risk.
Instead of looking at this as a drama react style video, which is true, I could describe it in a completely different way that is also true and way more interesting. The ceo of a computer build company is taking feedback, live, from a reputable reviewer, and making adjustments to his business accordingly. Where else do you find that? Imagine if cyberpower, or ibuypower, or origin, or any of those types of businesses had their CEO live reacting to criticism for all the world to see? Talk about transparency.
Those reviews are literally free audits for the company, which is great for them, saves a lot on the cost. Reacting to the review live on stream, however, that's something else. I think it was Linus who mentioned it before, but that really takes some balls to do that. And from what we see here, they did implement changes to correct what was identified as problems before. So this is a big plus for the company.
Asmongold isnt really the CEO, he is more like the board of investors main guy. Wich is still huge, but he doesnt run the compamy, just owns it and checks how its going from time to time.
And doing it PUBLICLY. He's literally drawing extra attention from his own followers, his likeliest customers, to the review BEFORE knowing what's in it. Full respect.
@@nickschlager9182 yes but the point of a pre-built is I don't want to build it and am willing to pay extra for the convenience. I am perfectly capable of cooking my own steak, but sometimes I just want to sit down at a steak house, pay the premium and have someone make it for me.
One problem with the cooking is you can always perfect something which takes time = money. I fully agree with you in principal though. It’s about finding that perfect balance, efficiency.

@5:10 - people having ownership of something in their job typically results in higher quality work. People want to feel valued, not just another body alfor a paycheck. Not saying they have to make work their life but it helps people not hate their job. Speaking from experience as an engineer and a manager.
The first time I ever built a PC I followed a Jackfrags guide, I think it was like 2014 or something. I actually managed to assemble this thing pretty much perfectly... until I dropped a screwdriver into the open case right at the end. Assumed nothing had gone wrong but then I couldn't get the PC to start... after taking it to two repair shops eventually someone figured out that when I dropped the screwdriver it hit this little area with 8 pins on it and the 1 specific pin of the 8 that it hit and bent out of shape was the pin that completed the circuit from the power button. So I had a perfectly functional PC with broken power switch lmao.
yeah that's totally something that could've happened to me too back then (also dropped one and got lucky that the screw driver didn't hit anything fragile) - today I'm pretty sure I'd check the impact site directly after a drop and would know what the implications of whichever pin being bent would be, but back on my first build - no way
Every pc I’ve worked with and changed things inside and replaced I treat it like I’m handling a baby over a cliff cheeks clenched and making sure my grip isn’t loose 😂

The way Asmon is describing the company’s problem solving process is very similar to the hospital I work at. We call them RCA (root cause analysis) meetings. Basically we try to identify a procedure or policy that is prone to have a high or higher chance of having human error involved than the standard or that we are striving for.
True .Sadly a lot of places say they use this but don't.They focus on casting blame on individuals rather than on a process or organizational issue. And that includes a lot of hospitals and medical oriented organizations.

The one going above and beyond is rarely acknowledged or compensated, and usually reprimanded for the lack luster performance of the lesser employees.
@asmongold The artwork issue. If it's being painted it needs to be scuffed prior to painting to promote adhesion. It's the difference between climbing a stone wall or a glass wall, it needs something to hold onto.

Extending the warranty over a manufacturer fuckup is an L only in the short term. In the long run you have proven you're willing to take a hit to make a better product for the customer and that fact is now out there for everyone to see. The goodwill boost you get from this will eventually turn it into a W financially from new customers imo.
These are the kinds of things that make a person who has built his own pcs his entire life and hundreds of customer machines consider the possibility of buying from an SI. I probably still won't just because of price. But this is a very good machine.
a happy customer is a repeat customer. I have build my last 3 pcs. But I am seriously thinking of getting a prebuilt one next and StarForge is top of the list at the moment. (my current one is not win 11 compatible so when support for win 10 ends next year it will be time to upgrade.)
I feel your pain with the loose screws. Back in the early 2000's I worked for a company that sold dispatching software for the trucking industry. We had a customer that wanted our software and a new computer as well. We partnered with a system builder who brought the assembled computer for us to install our software on. I installed the software and configured everything for the customer. Packed it up in it's shipping boxes and sent it to our customer 300 miles away. When it arrived the machine would not boot. We paid for a tech to check the computer out and he discovered that the hard drive was never screwed in. It had slid out and damaged the video card. We had the tech replace the video card and bolt in the hard drive. Not a great impression with a brand new customer. We did not open or inspect the hardware when it was in house since we did not want to void the builders warranty. Needless to say that the other couple of times we used that builder, we double checked the workmanship..
That's what happens when you hire competent professionals and let them do their thing without hinderance. It's honestly refreshing to see leadership trust in their employees

The best RMD I've ever had was with a ASUS monitor. After 4 years it stopped working and smoke bellowed out from it. I opened it up and took a look, the power supply has 4 capacitors that basically melted. Found out that they were banned in the US (and EU), that the whole manufacture was banned. I called and talked to ASUS IT people to see about rebuilding the power supply for a project (this was in College working on my Electrical Engineering degree) and wanted to get my hands on the datasheets for it. They not only over night Fed Ex me the data sheets, but a new monitor as well. Was really surprised. The only thing they asked for was the original power supply (they included a box with prepaid shipping) and some pics of the new one I built. I've been using ASUS monitors ever since. Oh and Logitech is awesome as well. I've gotten all sorts of things from them and discounts. They even sent me a free gaming mouse about 15 years ago to test for them.

I think the missing paint is just inadequate surface prep on just that one spot. when the tape was peeled it pulled off the yellow paint, and for whatever reason it didn't get touched up after the paint dried. matte surface treatments can result in fine dust that's difficult to remove due to static, annoying but it happens.

Plus if something breaks I don't have to deal with the Manufacture RMA, Star forge takes care of it for you. Big W.
@@joethestrat nah if I build it myself it'll be janky as hell i'd rather have the guy whos builds 100's of pc's a week as his job do it professionally. My cables and shit would 1000% just be strewn everywhere.

@saltiney8578 Functionally, unless they're hitting a fan or something, unorganized cables aren't even a problem. If you're not managing a server room, cable management doesn't matter. Cable management for home PCs has always been a joke for IT professionals. It's precisely like watching kids play with Legos as an engineer. It's cute, but doesn't matter. Performance will not suffer because you didn't zip tie cables together 🙄 part life will not be affected either. Honestly, just admit you don't have faith in yourself for some reason. That's not a technological issue, it's a personal one.
As a +25 years of being a PC builder myself, it is never wrong to use a bit more than enough thermal paste to ensure even coverage. Keep in mind that the thermal paste is used to fill-in the microscopic spaces between the CPU casing and the heatsink, the paste will greatly improve the heat transfer from the CPU --> to the heatsink. But the fact of making a "mess" on the top of the CPU, it gives me the creeps.
I've been spreading my paste on the IHS first before screwing down the heatsink, so that I know I have both proper coverage and not an excess of paste (as opposed to just squirting 'an amount' in the middle). Takes a little longer, but the certainty is worth it IMO.
If you want to have 3 Gaming PCs in one place like your room. You will likely need an electrician to run a new circuit breaker, line, outlet. My computer hits like 9-10 Amps when gaming, and the typical Outlet and Circuit Breaker only supports 15 Amps in residential.
I just built a new PC to replace my last gaming rig and went with AMD. Just cut the cord and jump on it. This thing runs super fast and is a great buy at half the price of an Intel.
@@apersonontheinternet8006 i mean 7800x3d vs 14900ks in gaming is almost half price for same/better performance. the 7800x3d 45% less for me. and you can also save on RAM because you don't need really fast one for x3d chips to be good
@@LiveType I work in the IT field so I probably got discounts etc that most wont but Mychip was like 10 bucks shy of what the intel chip of the same age/power costs. You really dont have to believe me I know what I paid and it was right at half.

My PC is better than a console for less than $1000, but I'm using a second hand graphics card. Thermal paste of the card was basically chalk and needed replacing, so it was 100% used for mining.
That isn't an absolute truth, although it definitely is a likely possibility. I leave my PC on 24/7/358 with the only time it is shut down being when I'm away from home on vacation and my thermal paste gets a bit crusty. However, I make it a point to tear the entire PC down and reapply thermal paste and generally inspect everything on the 1st of January of every year. I've been doing this since I got my i7-4790 way back in 2013 and have never had a problem.
At this point most new budget PCs are more powerful than even Series X. Optimum Tech built a 5L SFF PC (smaller than Xbox) with 4060 in it and compared performance. So 1000$ PC with second hand GPU will be orders of magnitude more powerful)
A good mining rig will keep temperatures low, probably it will have a better cooling than a desktop. With it constantly running it is also not damaged by thermal cycling. You are way better off than with someone who was constantly overheating it for a short period of time.
@@apersonontheinternet8006 No, I mean it was literally a dry, chalky mass without any moisture, no exaggeration. I didn't even know thermal paste could get like that and I'm surprised it could even turn on. Did crash pretty soon after booting up though.

"Actually good" is probably the highest praise possible from GN
It honestly is.
It's really amusing listening to him talk GOOD about something, because he doesn't make it sound good.
"No complaints" - Neutral voice = High praise.
"Excellent." - Neutral tone = Very high praise.
"What we would hope for" = Meeting good standards.
He very rarely *says* "excellent", and more often just uses information, to explain itself, instead of commenting outwardly about how good something is.
So the end result being a very neutral "Actually good" is huge.

Definitely better than the grand majority of managers.

The first time I ever built a PC I followed a Jackfrags guide, I think it was like 2014 or something. I actually managed to assemble this thing pretty much perfectly... until I dropped a screwdriver into the open case right at the end.

I'm a GN subscriber and have watched both of the Asmon reacts because they are comedy gold. Of course, Steve was trolling him.
That mark up for that quality, the extended warranty, and the enthusiast configuration, is more than fair. I would definitely choose this if I was building a system fresh.
Just as a note as I watch; in the e-mail with the advice to update BIOS, there's a typo as follows: "Staforge's warranty for a full six years". Yes, the "r" is missing in "Starforge".
That's just something I noticed when watching this vid (missed it in GN's video - which I watched first - but figured this to be the place for a comment on it anyway).

I have an SF build that has a whole saga attached to it, because it was a contest win that originally was supposed to be built by Artesian. SF got the order when they were just starting up, and every step of the way they've had outstanding support. Great communication. Great flexibility. Super supportive. Ariel, Pete and Bam in particular have made some issues really smooth and have gone the extra mile (I had to do an rma for my 13900k which went flawlessly).
I've been building my own rigs since 1995. This SF build is the very first prebuilt (not related to work) that I've ever owned, and it's good enough that I've already steered two of my employees to SF, who have bought their own machines.
Because SF is Actually Good ;)

I had a very bad experience with an Asus gamer phone, and gamers nexus did a big negative video exposing Asha's scammy warranty and RMA systems. Glad you had a good experience, bear in mind monitors have low fail rates compared to other PC components.
@Vihara2 this was way back in 2007, probably has changed quite a bit in the almost 20 years since.

Love the box-fan mention lol. I have a rotating fan blowing on my PC right now! It's in an older Thermaltake case. There is the 120mm aio cpu cooler, and the psu fan (and two fans on the GPU), other than that the case has ZERO fans (but full of holes), so it really helps. Right now downloading new SW game and watching YT my temps are:
Old intel cpu (OC to 4.6) @40* C (80* - 90* C when gaming - usually 80% usage)
RX580 @32*C (75* - 80*C when gaming - usually 100% usage)
MB @ 36*C
SSDs @34* C
I have a feeling that that may be the original thermal paste from over a decade ago! lol (i7-3770k)
Edit: Any praise from GN is huge praise. Well done!
I don’t even own a pc but after seeing the actual emotion he went to make sure all this was passable, I’d even say above grade inspection. Makes me wanna get one of his company’s build
Starforge is good, I recommend them. I purchased the $4500 build they have and the only issue I had was with Ghost of Tsushima after a update I couldn't play it anymore and then Wukong I couldn't play on launch but I followed the instructions Starforge had sent me about 5 days prior to Flash my BIOS and that corrected the issue and even got Ghost of Tsushima running even better than before.
Oh and I forgot to mention but Starforge also updated their warranty from 2yrs to 6yrs for all existing builds and future purchases due to the Intel problem.
Side note it's kinda funny the reviewers always get loose screws lol, it's almost like his employees are setting them up 😂, all my stuff was correct on arrival but still I would always check over any pre-built bc it can happen.
There's nothing difficult or complex about building your own PC. It's all plug and play, and they tell you where to add the components. After you've slid cards into slots and plugged plugs into components... format the drive and install the OS from a thumb drive.
It's so easy.
just buy the parts and let someone build them together for $50. you will easily save 1000 or even more instead of buying those prebuild scams.
@A3r0XxLol Yep. What's crazy is people defend getting ripped off hahaha.

GREAT Job brotha for keeping that cool 😎 👌 👍
I find it fascinating how Zacks sort of "empowering" rather than dictating philosophy towards the company is. I work at an SI in the EU, and a couple others before that, and it always was the other way around where usually the actual nerds (like me i.e.) who watch GN and the like, who are on the daily pulse of the industry just get dismissed, treated and even paid as such aswell. The mantra here is always "some young guys will be happy to get minimum wage and put everything into the company to make it work, because the love the field. We'll allow it, but only some times and make sure they know the see them replaceable at all times"... it always fine for those higher up until Price's Law kicks in eventually.
"Thanks, Steve..."
Back to you, Steve!
Just a reminder, making the form factor smaller comes at the cost of proper airway ventillation. That's the limiting factor with consoles, they can't make it too fast since it will generate too much heat that the narrow airway in the console couldn't handle.

Whoever is the "Screw Guy" needs to change their social media names to "Asmongold's Screw Guy". He would INSTANTLY become viral for it. The comments would be amazing. 😂
usually system integrators, especially on the small-medium scale, don't use assembly line workflows. instead, jobs get assigned to individual builders that work on that job all the way through (testing/qa and packaging might be handled by a separate crew), so "screw guy" is everyone that assembles pcs at starforge
This is like Gordon Ramsey eating at your restaurant.
It would actually be a fun video to have asmon go to the building center and walk us through the process and we can see what the team looks like and how many hands the pc's go through until they get shipped out
So... for anyone saying this is a ripoff for the price.
tbf, Asmond has openly said they cannot match the price of any given build if you were to build the system yourself. And comparing to other SIs, StarForge doesn't seem to be more expensive.
This model isn't even available more.
As an IT expert, With multiple certifications and diplomas, since 1996, I approve. If I was on your team I would make sure you would have at least the top 2 ratings in the world.. Lets shoot for number 1 in the SI battle.

Asmongold looks so tense as nexus tears his pc to parts.
Asmon conveniently avoided watching or even addressing LTT's Secret Shopper videos from earlier this year because Starforge got destroyed in them. Asmon vets this content and chooses to stream a "reaction" only if the result is good. He wasn't actually tense. He knew from the start.
Well ya: This is his company. He's a guy that gives a shit that the person receiving a product that he has put his reputation to, will have a good experience.
Ultimately this is why smaller businesses are better: They tend to actually give a shit about the customer, and the staff - because they see the results of caring, and empowering those two groups. Big business just cares about their KPI's - and the results speak for themselves.

Yea most ppl don't use much. And u have thermal past leftover in the tube that often gets thrown away anyway. Might as well use a decent amount

That's the worst thing about pc building, random ppl will dislike you due to components out of your control breaking
