    Good Vid. I played this one on GameCube and remember having fun with it for a good few weeks. Strangely though, I have never played the sequels.

    Loved this game. Got it for the GameCube soon after it released. I felt the strategy was to not drive too fast because you couldn’t outrun the AI but they weren’t gonna leave you behind either. Just keep a steady pace and not crash.

    The thing I loved the most about the first game was the pursuit of perfection. The Burnout in the title isn't about spinning your tires at the start of a race. It's about taking risks and being rewarded with boost. When you fill the boost bar and use all of it without letting go of the boost button, that's a Burnout and you're rewarded with another full boost bar. Chaining together as many as you can is the real challenge. The random traffic patterns certainly could throw a wrench in that, but there's usually a way around it.
    The game had the best sense of speed and peril for a car-based arcade racer at the time of release. While its sequels have surpassed it in nearly every respect, the first game was good enough to warrant having sequels developed.

    Been a long time since I last played Burnout and admittedly i'd only really played Revenge and Paradise so playing this recently, I was a bit surprised to see just how good they got this on the first go and it makes me excited to revisit the other games since I know how much better it gets later on.

    With the rubber banding and 3+ minute laps I don't think I'm in a rush to seek this out. Definitely one of those games where the sequels make the original completely obsolete in every way.

      I think it's fine to play and I like how un ornamented it is relatively compared to the sequels. It feels more like a 32 bit era game but I can dig that too. I'd take it over the open world paradise game just for the more arcadey ridgeracer track design and pick up and play vibes

    This game is insane. So hard. I loved it. I remember thinking it was better than the sequels but I guess I’d need to replay them all. I think you were done when you read ended the car ahead of you in this one and they changed that in the sequels, which I thought was cheap. A classic.

    I had a particular friend in elementary school I played this with a lot. But I mainly remember we played what we called "slam the median" or similar where we would intentionally drive into the divider between sides of the road and enjoy the crash physics

    With the punishing timer this felt like a game designed to eat quarters in an arcade. But a lot of console games were still designed like this in the early 00s.

    I LOVE the music in burnout 1.
    Its the exact same kind of royalty free sounding music that was used as background music in those "dangerous morons on the road" tv-programs here in the early 2000s.
    The sounds of the squeeking tires and grinding against other cars is also unmatched by later games. Together with the dopey music it ads a bit of a comedic element thats not there anymore in the later "cooler" titles.

    The Gamecube version of the first is the best. While it may be a slight downgrade in graphical clarity (especially if Burnout is played on the 360), the GC version plays better, has the ability to change control configurations, and audio/visual settings... and has Dolby Surround. The Gamecube version sounds AMAZING. You'll need to turn down the music a bit so it doesn't drown the sound effects, but everything is clear as day, whereas the Xbox version sounds kinda muffled.
    Point of Impact must be played on the Xbox because the director's cut has more content.

    I never played the original myself, but I spent a lot of time with one of the later games on Xbox, Paradise maybe? It wasn't 2, I know that much. So I think that game is the center of a funny story of mine. My friend had his xbox hooked up in my room for some reason, even though I had my own. We were playing a lot of Burnout around that time along with like NFS and Midnight Club etc.
    He would just rock up in the mornings if he was skipping trade school while I was on summer break from college and he'd just play while I was sleeping, kinda weird but whatever. One day he got super fucking pissed at the game and punched the top of his xbox, which immediately killed it. I'm talking he cracked the center green jewel and he dented some metal component inside the shell, I think it was the hard drive. I still have that thing to this day, it's definitely broken. You do not want to be punched by that dude let me tell ya.

    I remember picking this game up after playing the incredible BO2 and being pretty underwhelmed.
    I was surprised that EA bought them out after what I assumed was one good game (so good, though) and just assumed it was EA buying franchises until a year or two ago when I started researching what happened to Renderware.
    For those that also don't know, Criterion was founded by Canon employees to pursue development of games with their 3D rendering technology that saw massive success as the go to 3D engine for video games during the PS2/Xbox era (essentially the role that Unity and Unreal play now).
    EA was actually buying Renderware, and Criterion was snapped up alongside it (shortly before EA brought out their patented 'sleep now' pillow and placed it over the face of Renderware).

    I started my experience with Burnout franchise from sequel, and then tried some other installments. Later i decided also to play original game and... imho Burnout 2: Point of Impact just surpassed first game in all directions (especially music).
    Some visual enhancements (i like how B2 lighting look, especially sunny Ocean Sprint, there is some early 00's 3d vibe in it), simpler gameplay (wider roads, and maybe traffic spawned in less quantity; easier to get burnout chains; even slightest touches of traffic cars now less frequently causing crashes), lots of new content (and some stuff from first game got updated, for example roadster got 3d modelled rear lights, not just texture), music became more suitable for race (some B1 tracks just not work for me in this game), crash mode.
    From my experience the only thing that sequel lacked is ability to save replays, but i guess it was probably removed due to lack of time.

    Burnout 3 holds up perfectly. Been playing it a lot recently.
    Takedown needs a remake or re release but I’m guessing the soundtrack licensing is the main factor on why that hasn’t happened.

    • @BestGirlsBiggestFan
      @BestGirlsBiggestFan 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Could be, licensed music is why many games of the time don't get ports, remasters and so on.
      TH-camrs fear the name Crazy Taxi for the same reason; that series is a demonetisation speed run.

  • @3dmarth

    Hey, the framerate is very inconsistent in this video. Burnout 1 runs flawlessly on GameCube, and going by your comments, it should be the same on Xbox, but the video doesn't line up with that.
    I know some of your previous videos happened to use older, lower-quality footage, but it'd seem there's more going on here. (Was any of this recorded in 480i mode? Certain deinterlacing methods can chop 60fps interlaced video down to 30fps.)
    I don't mean to nitpick, though! Just figured some feedback could help in achieving better video quality. :)
    PS: You can refill your boost meter for free by draining the whole thing in one go, which enhances the whole risk/reward aspect. Or at least I'm pretty sure that was in BO1. Definitely in 2.

    • @campxbox
      @campxbox  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No worries! I recorded it all at 480p and widescreen with OBS capturing it at the highest FPS possible, maybe widescreen messes with the frame rate a bit? I know some games have that issue.

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@campxbox Like the game itself is performing worse? I'd be surprised if it's that dramatic of a drop (or if the Xbox version in general runs that much worse than GameCube), but yeah, I have seen a few games that run noticeably- if only slightly- worse in widescreen, so who knows? Come to think of it, the bumper cam footage seemed to come out smoother in general, and that skips drawing the car model...
      I have also had issues with OBS dropping frames for seemingly no reason, but that apparently is caused by the way it hooks into other applications: Dolphin in OpenGL mode was one of the worst offenders there, yet OBS can take high-quality output from some other apps and especially capture cards just fine.

    • @BestGirlsBiggestFan
      @BestGirlsBiggestFan 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@campxbox The software can do that sometimes, I've recorded 60 fps footage only to find out the software was set to 30 fps by default and made the videos look super choppy.
      Though screen capture through OBS is very CPU intensive, so it could've just clashed with the already CPU heavy Xbox emulation (assuming it was emulation anyway, if not then disregard this last point)
      Edit: Never mind the last point, I typed that before watching. My guess is that the passthrough method may have had frame pacing issues with the capture software.

    • @campxbox
      @campxbox  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@3dmarth I wonder if OBS isn't capturing the best when I have multiple programs running In the background? I'll have to test it. I'm usually taking notes and stuff as well as capturing.

  • @glyntaylorwilliams
    @glyntaylorwilliams 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The thing with the burnout games is using boost on the straights is a waste and pointless.
    It makes your screen blurry and car more uncontrollable. For a gain of very few if any km/h.
    When you learn that, the meme of boosting all the time at max speed makes the game less fun.
    Boosting is only worth it when accelerating out of a corner or to get to top speed.
