  • This is an early 2000s Craftsman snowblower that has a strange issue of not wanting to drive at all. I have a look at the steering clutches

hello Friend. I have the exact same machine. My Issue is When you pull up on the lever for the EZ steer The steering clutch does open up. But the Wheel does not turn freely as your VID shows. Any tips to get that Gear loosed up? Oil? Heat? or any advice would be Great to have, if you don't mind. Thank you

Sometimes grease gets old and gummy. A degreaser like WD-40 might disolve some of the grease and free things up. then maybe some new lowtemp grease to keep things lubed

Well, after my original post. 5 days ago. I decided to tackle my seized shaft problem. Just like your reply reads. Used WD40 Silicon to get inside the cracks. Took a chisel and hammer rocked the seized gear on the shaft and it came loose. Took some serious elbow grease, but it gave way. Then as you stated, i did add some low temp gear grease to the shaft, and now the EZ Turn works like brand new. In a Panic i was hoping you would repond to me 5 days ago. But winter shows no mercy. Had to get it done. To let you know. IT was your Video here that made me aware how that shifting gear works, and how it should rotate. That is what helped me mostly.. But Thank you for the reply. Have a Great 2020 !!! CheerZ to you

@@caldelorey543 I would have replied within a min or so when you posted your comment but I was not receiving noifications for any comments. I thought I wasn't getting any comments and went in to check yesterday and I had loads of them. some that had not shown up when I had checked previously.

Axles were turning when you first tried it. Wheels were not.

The pin only keeps the wheel on the shaft, they do not go through the wheel hub. The shaft spins free in the wheel when you pull the lever. If you look at the inside part of the wheel there are notches that engage into the clutch mechanism, and that is what drives the wheels, not the pin though the wheel.

@@patthesoundguy On some models one wheel can spin freely depending on where the pin is in the 2 axle holes.

That repair worked for a while but the clutches were a bit worn and Instead of ordering expensive parts because my buddy didn't want to spend a lot on the machine, I ended up welding the clutch halves together a couple months later.

@@patthesoundguy I found with my Craftsman snowblower you can switch the wheels side to side and put the shaft pin thru the slotted end of the hub (facing outwards). This pins the wheel directly to the drive shaft and bypasses the steering clutches. Not sure if that is by design or by accident but you wouldn't need to weld them if it worked on this model.
I bought my snowblower used and found that the previous owner had the wheels installed backwards (based on thread pattern) and that the slip clutches didn't work. After I pulled it all apart I realized what they had done and put them back the way they were meant to be.
