  • Hunter and Andy go and pick up an International 186 Hydro run the Erskine snowblower. The tractor has a turbo to bring the hp to 135 hp. We drove 7 hours to get the tractor. It took a few days to modify the snowblower frame to fit the larger tractor.

    Hydrostatic drive would be very convenient to run a snowblower. My family farm had an IH 826 Hydro Demonstrator. It was a good tractor but if you got it stuck, don’t pull it out dragging the drive tires, make sure that you are spinning them faster than your movement across the ground.

    That will be great for the engine... de-carb it! Make sure you have shear bolts, that will be the weak link... as it should be! Congratulations

    I’m from southern Arizona and never seen a snowblower like that work so I have a question. What happens if you hit a chunk of hard solid ice under the snow? Will it just eat it or will it break?

    • @fixanddestroy9669
      @fixanddestroy9669  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably just get pushed by the front augers. If it is small enough to fit through the auger it should get eaten by the fan. We haven't been able to put a lot of run time on this setup yet, so I am guessing.

      @@fixanddestroy9669 I dunno anything, really, about big blowers, so I don't know if that adaptability means you change the gear ratio in the machine or not, however, I can tell you from my small blower experience that impeller RPM makes a huge difference in that case.
      On my old walk behind blower I increased the the impeller RPM from 1200 to 1800 and it plugged a lot less and threw a lot further.
      One downside, tho, if you pick up heavy objects, like rocks, it can launch them into orbit with too high of RPM's.
      Shear pins also will become less effective as shear pins can only stop applied power, not the momentum in the machine.

    Front mount is the way to go. Not everyone has the luxury of 4WD and it's hard to add weight when the blower is on the rear and you lose the ballast when the blower hits the ground

  • @hrodd2
    @hrodd2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup, that will get the job done! Hydrostatic and forward facing is the way to go. Nice rig! I converted a combine to a snowblower and it is also working fine. Is that a 9' width blower? Years ago we also had an Erskine blower.

    When setting up a large tractor for snow blower work and there is the option for 540 or 1000 RPM drive. Always take the 1000 RPM option. It puts way less stress on both the tractor's internal PTO drive systems and the snow blower driveline.

    • @fixanddestroy9669
      @fixanddestroy9669  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know. Last time it was on the Massey it had a nice and scary hum with running 1000 rpm. We wanted to try it out slow with 540.

    • @tcmtech7515
      @tcmtech7515 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fixanddestroy9669 Often that comes from the main blower paddles churning up air being they are basically just really heavy fans.
      The only real concern with running them fast is if something is way out of balance and you will notice the shake immediately if something is dangerously far off.
      My personal preference for running on the higher RPM speed is that the tractor can be run at much lower engine RPMs for lighter work which makes maneuvering much easier if the tractor has to drive backwards to blow snow.
