  • Meet the GPD Win Max 2. A device best received as an all-in-one. Equipped with absolutely incredible components, particularly the CPU and GPU, nothing is missing, even an optional 4G modem is available.
    The thought of traveling with this much power is mind-blowing to me, this device breaks new ground. If today is amazing, what awaits tomorrow?

    From my experience with the win max 2 so far it’s an amazing device but it get a little to heavy when gaming within 30 min. When I have it docked though it get everything I need done. Gaming/work/video editing etc…performance is flawless. Best all in 1 in my opinion. Great Review by the way!

      I get what you are saying, you are saying that I am so buff cause I don't have that time limiter of holding it. You are officially my number #1 favorite viewer now! 🤣
      All kidding aside though, I loved handhelds the most, but I do constantly move from on my stomach, on my back, on my side, etc... Maybe that's why I don't feel it as much? I can't stay still but that's with every device, phone included.

      The best way to enjoy it is laying on your back on a bed or couch. With the unit resting on your stomach. Ive played 2 hour sessions of Terra Invicta like that. Didnt even felt a strain. But yeah, playing it standing up I get you!

    Thanks for the great video. I got one yesterday. So far it seems great. What I liked especially is the screen. It has very vibrant colors and very clear. So even though the screen is smaller than a typical laptop, you can still read things on it quite easily. The one thing I don’t quite like is that it is heavy. Battery life is OK but won’t last you all day. No problems with any of the high end games I have tried so far.

    • @OneRedKraken
      @OneRedKraken ปีที่แล้ว

      For battery life I highly recommend using one of the few TDP apps available. Stock it comes at 25 or 28w TDP. Which sadly the computer will take advantage of any chance it gets. If you set it to something more reasonable, depending on what you are playing. You can get so much more battery time out of it. IE, watching videos or old retro games setting it to 8w or 10w TDP will greatly improve battery time.
      I played a game without setting TDP and I noticed it had drained 40% battery in about an hour. Whereas if I set set it to 12w, I get the same experience but the battery will drain only about 20% in the same amount of time.

    I LOVE the 10" screen size
    I LOVE having a physical keyboard layout
    I LOVE having a clam shell so as to protect the device when closing.
    BUT would like to have controllers on the side, full sized buttons and have the screen mid-centered.
    A possible solution to have it all:
    Do like the GPD Win3
    A huge 10" screen that slides up, but this time the screen can also fold down from its hinged to close like a clamshell as well.
    The screen can be centered and middle when slid down- aligning very well with the controllers on the sides, but you can always slide it up if you want a top centered screen and to access the physical keyboard.
    The device would have to be bigger to get a reasonable keyboard experience, however.
    Either the controllers on the side have to be recessed a bit to allow for some covers be put in place if it is to be used like a micro laptop.
    # Also don't get rid of Micro-SD support for those of us who to get the overall maximum storage available.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      110% MicroSD is wayyyy to important for us. I am at this exact moment working on the next video on the Win Max 2 featuring many PC games and all of them are running off of MicroSD. Unfortunately, I was offered to swap the 2280 to a 2230 but when I received my unit, the swap wasn't done so the drive I had put aside can't be used at the moment.
      As for your inputs, you know... I'm not sure if the ergonomic of the Win Max 2 would be as great. I guess I won't know unless a device like you described was to be created by GPD or someone else but I'll say this much, the comfort of the Win Max 2 is one of it's strongest positives, I've gave them high praise on that aspect and I stand by that. It feels as though it would've been so easy to mess it all up. I wouldn't change the setup they have but guess what, I'm SUPER EXCITED for Win 4 and you can be certain that it will be reviewed on this channel! Stay tuned for that one. Cheers and thanks for your support!

      I prefer the controls exactly where they are. If they added controllers to the sides, it would be as wide as the Steam Deck and far less portable as a result.

      What happens if you're using controller and accidentally press keys? I also like design. It's like a super 3ds

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Yoko.Kurama It depends on the the game, some games will receive controller and keyboard inputs as the "same" meaning, it won't cause any interruption whatsoever. Some games however do keep inputs on different "lanes" so for example, you are pushing up on your left stick up and hit a keyboard key, it'll stop your controller inputs cause the game thinks you want to change to keyboard inputs.
      Meaning you'd have to let go of the stick and push it anew.

    I'm stuck in deciding on the WM2 and the Win4. Does the keyboard affect gameplay with the controllers? My laptop is going through overheating issues and the WM2 would be a great alternative as I have a SD but would like more hmph. I'm wondering if I can do laptop things on the Win4 before having to connect to a monitor...

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is such a great question, unfortunately I won't have the GPD Win 4 just yet but rest assured that I will be doing everything in my power to have it ASAP to review it for you all! 😀 Until then, here is what I can tell you. You have the SD and that doesn't fulfill the "laptop" criteria quite right cause you know... no keyboard, no mouse, not natively Windows, etc... So yes, the Win 4 WILL have a keyboard beneath the screen as well as a little nub that can give you "mouse" like functions on the fly. However, the Win 4 having these do not make it a "laptop" but rather, a gaming handheld with QoL features for when you need a quick "laptop-like" solution on the fly. Like... Imagine sitting a Win 4 on a table to type what you just did, it'll be better than a Steam Deck sure, but it won't be anywhere near as pleasant as a laptop either.
      So it boils down to this, when you say you want a device to do "laptop" things? Do you mean like operate productivity software? Typing? An elevated browsing experience? If the answer is yes, I don't need to have the GPD Win 4 to tell you that the Win Max 2 is far better tailored for that AND it plays games very well.
      On the other hand, if you tell me that by "laptop" things, you mostly mean like watching Netflix, some TH-cam, buying games off of Steam/Epic but mostly playing games 70-80% of the time? Then the GPD Win 4 might be the better device because it is pretty much guaranteed to be the more "gaming" friendly device, the tradeoff is that the "laptop" aspect is not as convenient and/or comfortable.
      We also don't know how much the GPD Win 4 will be, considering they crammed so much more in the Win Max 2, I'd expect a more affordable device but that, we should know in a week's time give or take. I hope this helps you. Cheers! :)

      @@GameTechTalk This helped me far more than you'll ever know! Thank you for the intuitive response. I'm currently doing some research comparing the specs on both machines and I feel like the WM2 is more my alley, but I'm nervous of holding a "laptop-like" device to play games (mainly emulated) in such a manner I'm not accustomed to. The SD has helped me with my game library as I'm currently catching up on PS2 games and remote play with PS5 and XboxSX (it's just more intuitive playing with Netflix in the background than sitting for gametime when you have two kids and a wife). If my Windows PC hadn't started acting up, I'd definitely get the Win 4 so I dunno. But thank you for your help!

    Gpd Win Max 2 vs a Laptop with a 6800u with an external controller? What's the better buy?

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      The GPD Win Max 2 hands down. Unless I'm crazy, I haven't seen laptops with 6800U that are drastically cheaper to a point that the WM2 is overpriced. And the only viable benefit you "might" find in a laptop over the WM2 is the panel, which still lacks the hardware to push 120hz, 144hz where it would matter.
      Ultimately, the only benefit to a better panel would be streaming and it's such a niche market. Yeah, if your after the 6800U first, don't look elsewhere, it is where it's at.

    Question, in your opinion is this the best option on the market right now for a portable gaming machine? Compared to others that are out?

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pretty legitimate question and the best answer comes from not the device itself but how you personally approach technology as a whole. I can't be going too deep in a YT response but will indulge nonetheless. There will always be better, so objectively the Win Max 2 is from a "jack of all trades" perspective, the best device that currently exists in it's respective category, in my opinion, at the moment of writing this. I sincerely believe that.
      Subjectively? No I can't say that it is. For one, the Steam Deck does offer so many appealing things for a fraction of the cost, does have redeemable (and superior) qualities but also, is a broader device in it's appeal for what it is meant to do first and foremost. And if you are a power user, than the gap with the Win Max 2 heavily reduces, though "quality of life" will take a hit.
      So back to "objectively", and now compare the Win Max 2 to a laptop, where size, "pocket" portability, integrated gaming peripherals are no longer subjectively important? The Win Max 2 is easily dethroned by a gaming laptop. The same money spent will net you a 3050Ti with a i7-12700H and a 144hz panel, all that's missing is a game controller.
      In many ways, the best answer to your question would be questions, questions such as: "What would you like to do with your device? What would you prioritize? What's the budget?" I know it's a bit broad of an answer but I hope it gives you perspective! 🙂 Thanks for watching!

    • @beardedginger9175
      @beardedginger9175 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GameTechTalk I understand, thank you for the response. I have a gaming laptop but was looking for more portability and I feel steam deck is awesome but very limited at the same time, for example i can only find videos of people getting MW2 to work with windows on steam deck and that is my main game I love the steam deck just wish it had a bit more support from 3rd party games I guess. Valve has been doing an amazing job with the steam deck, I feel i havent seen another company put so much effort into something like valve has the steam deck which is great but then falls on big game makers to also want to support it which is sort of turning me off ya know.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beardedginger9175 Right, and that's where the Steam Deck may not be the best appealing device for you as indeed, Activision will not be bothered with the anti-cheat running natively on the Deck. That's a major hurdle. Ultimately, you'll have to tinker more to play CoD:MW2 on a Steam Deck than you would a Win Max 2. You'll also have (in my opinion) a better experience on a Win Max 2 because you have more flexibility as to how you want to tweak the game to leverage the more powerful hardware that you have to play with.
      Last argument, on the Win Max 2, you could easily travel with a BT mouse and quickly pop it out and play kb/m if you so choose. The Steam Deck would have you carry a mouse AND a keyboard to do the exact same thing... See how suddenly the "better" device can so quickly shift? Anyway, one thing to be sure of, the Win Max 2 is a SOLID device. I'm excited for the day that I review a device that isn't, this way people have a spectrum to evaluate my reviews. But I assure you one thing, no matter how wide that spectrum, the Win Max 2 would do very well even if I had done this for 3 years prior. I'm not deceived of the money I spent, not a penny.

      @@AugustineKusiDuah-bk4fr Well, it's not so much that landscape specifically gives tearing, so does portrait. But scanlines of panels are always from left to right, top to bottom. So on landscape those lines cover the width. If the fps is fluctuating and in lower numbers (eg. 20-30-45-60 fps) tearing is quite visible.
      Portrait panels, the scanlines behave the exact same, but since it's rotated 90 degrees, the lines should be from bottom to top, left to right. So on the height which is less surface to cover. Tearing, while still visible, is less noticeable from naked eye. However, I still see it if I go looking for it.
      I prefer portrait cause I don't play older games much but that's really a personal choice. Ultimately, I'll just have whatever is in the device.
      (Edit) Oh and I should add, faster refresh time for panels also reduces tearing. So the 120hz from the RoG that a lot of people think is useless? Well, that also helps a great deal against tearing even if you don't hit the target fps of the panel.

    Calling it a steam deck competitor isn't exactly fair though. LOL! GPD needs to update their product page. They advertised the HDMI port as the low-end variant of 2.1. Which technically shouldnt allow for above 60hz or VRR. But apparently you are right, I just had to plug my win max to my TV to make sure. I bought a USB C to HDMI 2.1 for nothing!
    This version of the Win Max series is absolutely astounding. Im playing Return To Monkey Island and it looks beautiful on the panel. Super happy they went with glossy instead of matte finish. Obviously those using it outside might have a different opinion. But for me its the best. Also, in comparison to the win series or the Steam Deck. I find having the screen be situation above the controller area makes it way more comfortable to use and being able to have a separate angle to the screen versus the controller. Playing this bad boy laying in bed is a dream come true!

    I've been following Asian technology since 2012 and specifically the Chinese company known as GPD of Shen Zhen/Hong Kong. Great review and awesome analysis and breakdown of the Win Max 2 device. However, I'd like to put history in its proper perspective and do my part to educate the masses by putting the time line in the correct and factual order.
    GPD has been around since before 2013 but have been creating handheld portable devices and their specific WIN devices began in 2014 with the Win 1. I watched and bought each one through their Indiegogo campaign supporting that company while witnessing their technological evolutionary improvements ever since till today in 2022
    GPD WIN devices were never challenging Valve and their inferior "steam deck" because, GPD was already doing what they were doing from 2014 and perfecting their sequel handheld devices every year to 2 years. Valve saw an opportunity and decided to get into the portable handheld gaming market and while they were at it, "change the narrative" to make it seem as if they were the 1st to create a portable windows gaming handheld that's revolutionary and credible dismissing GPD was doing it all along 7 years prior to Valve's passive aggressive jealousy.
    I just wish more people knew this because seeing the whole misconception of GPD's position as a seat of challenge towards Valve when its actually and factually Valve that's challenging GPD is how it should be properly told.

    • @GameTechTalk
      @GameTechTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right that GPD did those devices way before Valve, but to your point, so did Pandora with the Open Pandora device, and one could be hard pressed to say that HP did with their iPaq... Catch my drift? Don't worry, I was there for the previous devices as well, I've been into this niche for almost 2 decades now.
      Whether you like it or not, Valve did bring amazing attention to this category of devices and it did bring to market a device that was better than anything before it. But hey, there is a reason why this device gets the praise it deserves, and that is on GPD's hands. With that said, I am personally happy that they did deliver with the Win Max 2, it is a FANTASTIC piece of hardware.
      And last, if GPD is playing the card that they are not up against Valve, it would be a very dumb strategical standpoint, ignoring competition does not make it magically disappear and last but not least, as you seem to know GPD, go to their website and see for yourself on the splash page of the Win 4. It says in big bold yellow letters: "Better than Steam Deck". So between you and I, they know what they are doing! 😉 Thanks for watching and for your inputs, I see that we share passion and that is exciting for me to see and read! ❤

    • @FuSungECookye
      @FuSungECookye ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GameTechTalk I totally remember the Pandora and there incredible wait time for their device to hit the market. But but by the time their handheld device hit the market it was dead on arrival. I fondly remember being so excited for that device becuase it specifically attracted me to the Sega Saturn style "D" pad. I still wished in some ways GPD took their Saturn D pad like-esque from the Q9 tablet and implemented it on the Win devices. But that's just a personal preference. 😅
      To add to your point, GPD had to play the card of propaganda because they knew on their end, they were trying to balance the scale of marketing exposure to which in the Western World they have struggled as a company for notoriety and prominent exposure.
      Valve indeed saw this, and used this truth to work in reverse to their advantage thus overshadowing GPDs 7 to 8 years in the market already. Valve was able to use price point as one major selling factor. Of course they utilized other strategies as well such as a custom made chips specifically tailored for gameplay.
      As for the Win 4 it will be and is the same exact specs as the Win Max 2 minus camera, secondary full size SD card slot, and other adornments that are obvious. But made in a smaller for factor that's more pocketable and attractive.
      Last but not least going back to Valve, they still failed to deliver on the major promises of playing AAA games. The device does play, but not all and many don't load due to the inferiority of "their" specs.
      I truly believe that Valve felt some type of way for quite sometime knowing and seeing that their steam platform was being utilized the most on foreign Chinese handhelds and wanted to take control of that reality since there are the creators and major innovators of that platform while bringing the PC gaming world into integration with the console market allowing potentiality of 3rd party games to finally have a home on PC for those who prefer that over a dedicated home gaming console.

    The SD appeals to me because it is ergonomically like holding a pro controller.
    The gpd win models are laptops with joysticks and buttons melded into them. Using it as a controller is not remotely comfortable.
    The aya 2 is probably better compared imo.

      I hear you, in many ways the GPD Win Max 2 would be a category of it’s own and the AYANEO 2 vs Steam Deck would make more sense. AYANEO 2 vs GPD Win Max 2 would be no different in terms that they are two devices that have potentially different appeals.
      But truth is that most people interested in SD would also be interested in WM2. It’s also the first PC gaming-centric handheld to come out with better specs after SD.
      Either way, the more conversations we have around these devices, the better the space becomes for consumers and companies to see the value in making these devices! Thanks for watching! 😊

    Intel model was cancelled.

      Ahhh that makes sense then, good thing as it just didn't make sense anymore to go for them at the time being, I do hope Intel can work on their drivers and maybe have something to compete with in 2-3 years.
