3dmark says great because that is the top 10% of all the results with the similar specs. which means GPD actually did a great job optimizing the hardware
It is mostly down to the configured tdp. Most laptops with the 1035g7 are configured to run at a 15watt tdp compared to the 25 watt tdp out of the box on the winmax.
Pulled the trigger on the 2021 refresh of the GPD Win Max. And I have to say. Zero regrets. Best portable gaming and media PC ever. Ridiculously expensive. But this thing packs quite a punch albeit being so tiny. Makes the commute & work lunch time a blast! Being a fan of DOS Games, the built in physical keyboard was a must for me. And the built in controller is serviceable for short gaming sessions. Get RetroArch and eXoDOS on that thing and you're set.
100% if you guys replace the KPX with liquid metal it will bring the temps down further. The exposed die needs higher thermal transfer because of the smaller surface area available. KPX is great stuff but you need a larger surface for it to maximize it's performance. Also, it COULD be possible that XTU could run on that and if so could possibly add an voltage offset to reduce the temps. Worth a try.
Phil, you're a brave man. I know Jay does watercooling and things like this all the time but there is no way I would let my boss tape my handheld pc to an air conditioner for shits and giggles.
I had to pull apart an old Inspiron 1501 to repair a damaged charger line. I gave it the full once over while I was inside. New CMOS battery, clean out the cooler, and repaste it carefully. Since I deal with older systems pretty routinely, this "full once over" is basically SOP any time I open one.
Gotta loves jays ADHD moments 🤣🤣 it makes me feel not so alone with mine 😅🤣 and that little computer just ducktaped to the AC looks so jank 🤣 gotta love it
IFixit does have an electric screwdriver, I picked on up earlier this month. The problem with it is it doesn't have very much torque, so you need to loosen the screw before it will work.
Can we please get another video of "Nick and Phil's Adventure challenges" please? Like another trouble shooting challenge, or get them to build a PC together. And Jay to be filming. Loved that.s
Their customer service is crap too. I say this as a customer. But it's a niche market. The steam deck lacks a few features i need, such as usb4/thunderbolt for an egpu/dock.
@@daniesalex7073 compared to Steam Deck that sells at a loss and with a deal with AMD to get "custom" bulk APUs, I see hard for these to get cheaper soon, unless the manufacturing of the device itself gets cheaper, component wise, probably won't change.
The decreased GPU score could be from the higher output of the CPU. They share the same cooler, so thermal headroom has an upper limit somewhere. So balancing the overall cooling capabilities may need to manually throttle based on workload types. Gimping the CPU may very well give a better GPU score.
For suggestions for everyone who reads this, this can be further improved using proper version of intel xtu and undervolting the cpu offset around -0.080 which most of the cpu can do, and same to gpu also. Dont overdo it or else you will start crashing and restarting. also you can try adjusting the tdp from there generally droping 10% from standard tdp will be the sweet spot (* stock tdp will be fine) For me who uses i5-8550u this same thing increased my cpu sustained clock from 2.6ghz to 3.1ghz all core (* max boost for this cpu is 3.4ghz). Hey Jay, iFixit does have a power screw driver, however, it is not the greatest. The spin speed, even when fully charged is super slow, and usually does not have enough torque to get most screws off with out using it as a normal screw driver at first.
I really appreciate you guys acting like idiots. My cat died a few days ago and this video managed to put a smile on my face. Keep up the great content.

I think his analogy of what the CPU did at the initial ramp up of frequency and temps was ideal. In real world applications it’s most likely programmed to go full send because it might be a burst of processes and be done, but in long term scenarios it needs to rethink how it’s going to tackle the processes.
Jay there’s a company that you can use to refrigerate the water in your custom loop. That would be neat to see how well that work. And then combine it with the air conditioner.
It is so clear that we currently is limited by cooling ability and especially in smaller solutions. Hopefully we'll se a leap in cooling ability soon, just like we have seen in other tech developments areas.
Got Win Max 2 2023 coming in a few weeks, can't wait, will be only computer too and use Oculink with external 4090, 2 4k monitors etc. Ultraportable on the road, best of both worlds. You can take this places a laptop won't fit / is weird.
So the best thing you could do with an air-conditioned PC that is accessible for _semi_ mass market is to create ducting with a 3D-printed baffle for both the air conditioner outlet and the PC case internals. This way, cooling can go through an insulted duct on the outside, unfasten the stock fascia, replace with outlet baffles, plumb with duct to the PC, then fit it in the rear for all the cool air to go inside. This would bee the most realistic way of doing it, and with some cool-down time for the ducting to get nice and cold, the air going inside would be absolutely frigid with a well-performing unit.
