Aaliyah, I just need to tell you that the audience member who looked so much in awe is a famous singer--Mama Cass. She had a career with a group called the Mamas and Papas, which was famous for its close harmonies, and then had a solo career. The expression on her face was the awe of an expert.
Actually, she hated being called "Mama".....just Cass Elliot.
@@giuliogrifi7739Really?....you feel better now?
@@johnjohn37371 Yeah...thank you, I feel better, but I could feel even better if.....
I’ve seen a lot of reactions to this particular performance recently, and listening to trained vocalists explain what I’m hearing makes the song even better. Janis ran on pure, undiluted emotion. R.I.P.
@@giuliogrifi7739 Thanks for pointing that out, you beat me to it.
This concert was when Janis had her big breakthrough. She was mainly just on the west coast before this. She was polyphonic she could sing 2 notes at the same time. She put 120% of her soul into every song she sang. There will never be another “Pearl”.
Thanks for sharing💕
"Pearl" is one of the best albums I have ever heard. Period.
That audience member was Mamma Cass, member of The Mammas and the Poppas and a successful solo career. A great singer in her own right.
Her mouthing wow to the camera is a real tribute in and of itself.
Thanks for sharing💕
And her band was the organizer of this the first rock festival.
Janis was a troubled soul. It's so sad she passed so soon. I'm sure she's in a much better place now. RIP Ms. Janis. You are still loved down here! 💔💔
🌺
She could make you feel her pain and you would hurt because you could do nothing to help.
What she needed in her life was people who truly LOVED HER. Never mind her status.
Janis truly had one of the most distinctive voices in rock, of any male or female singer. Her vocals were definitely unique- not just any singer could sound like that. She had that more soulful, tempered tone, and then she could just unleash her vocal distortion and go wild. I think she was very naturally gifted, and an incredible performance like this was just her authentic artistic self up on stage, or anywhere she sang.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Matthew💕
I'm an old man who grew up listening to the music you;re exposing yourself to. Let your self-education into these artistic geniuses be the mother of your own invention. They are showing you what is possible with genuine talent. I am delighted to witness you, on the launch pad of your career. Let these forgotten voices fuel your arc. Aim HIGH.
Thanks so much🥰
As an opera singer, you may be familiar with Gershwin's opera, "Porgy and Bess" There is a great version of Janis performing "Summertime" from this opera...
Thanks for sharing
Couple of things. Cass Elliot had never heard Janis before this. They became friends and sang together on a couple of occasions. Monterey was actually put together by John Philips, the leader of The Mamas and the Papas, and he brought lots of mostly unknown acts including The Who from England and Jimi Hendrix, inspired by folk festivals. As a result of her two performances here, she got the first real record deal that brought her fame, allowed us to enjoy her genius and finally made her crash and burn way too young. More than half a century has passed and she is still a powerful emotional lever for many of us the world over.
Thanks for sharing
Someone mentioned Mama Cass as the amazed woman in the audience, look her up by name; Cass Elliott. She was a star in her own right. Janice, though, Janice was a force of nature unleashed by music.
Thanks foe sharing the info💕
Yup. She was like- “Well, there goes my career!” 😂
Hi Aaliyah! Monterey Pop is an amazing film. I discovered this documentary at a young age, and it completely changed my understanding of music. One of the highlights for me has always been this performance of Ball & Chain. Janis Joplin doesn't just sing the song; she rips off her mask, the one we all wear in public, and gives us a clear view of the emotions lurking beneath it. There are these precious artists from time to time who can make us feel what they're protraying. Janis was one of those precious gifts. You should check out her songs Cry Baby and Piece Of My Heart. Great analysis, Aaliyah!
Thank you very much once again for sharing💕
Yes please! Both great songs!
janis joplin is a queen
🥰
Janis is a heavy blues-rock artist well known for her signature hit songs - Me and Bobby McGee and Piece of my Heart. Both worth a listen.
Thanks for the recommendations
When Janis sings you feel every word.
🥰
Janis live touches my primal self. Anytime I hear her live performances tears well up.
Monterey was the transition into modern rock with established acts but also up and comers The Who, Jimi Hendrix & The Who. It is worth watching the whole weekend. Also recommend the Doors and Cream from mid 60’s who in my opinion started modern rock.
Thanks for sharing
You should check out her live version of the 1930s song,
👉 Summertime 👈
A lot of people has covered that song but Janice has Probably the best version that's ever been done. This song is pretty good but everybody is on what I called mind altering libations.. 😂
Thanks for sharing
Yeah! I love Janis! Cool to see someone feeling the same way I did when I see Janis belt out a couple vocal crescendos. I was born the same year as the Monterey Pop Festival. I had eight older brothers and sisters who owned stacks of albums. Around the age of seven, I started putting their albums on the turntable. What a great music age to grow up in.
Thanks so much for sharing
An even more amazing live recording of her doing this song is on the album Cheap Thrills by Janis joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The whole album displays her talent to the max. Ball and Chain was originally written and preformed Big Mama Thornton - the famous American blues singer.
Thanks for sharing💕
One of the brilliant artists who died in the late 60s / early 70s at the age of 27. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison of the Doors, and Janis. We lost a lot of talent too early in those days, who knows what they could have achieved had they lived longer.
Thanks for sharing🌺
The woman in the audience in minute 8,46 is Mama Cass Elliot, singer in Mamas and Papas.
Thanks for sharing
I get emotional every time I see that performance.
🥰
Great reaction young lady. Best of luck to you in all of your future endeavors. Janis was a once in a century talent.....My favorite fema le artist
Thank you so much!!🥰🥰🥰
Legend.
🥰
The above footage is of the day Janis Joplin aged 24 yrs old was 'noticed' by the "big people of the music-world".
[In 1966, Joplin auditioned and joined a new rock band in San Francisco, Big Brother and the Holding Company. The band grew popular in the Bay Area, and their big break came with their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, footage above.]
Thanks so much for sharing💕
🌹I really appreciate you dipping your musical toe into the years of my youth ,JJ and a bottle of southern comfort was a respectful way to listen to Janice. We lost a beautiful woman the day she passed. Trust me you do her proud. Thanks 🌹
Thanks for sharing💕
She’s the queen of feeling. Also, it worth noting that she perform under so much emotional dysfunction, most likely super high in drugs and drunk, and she still delivers quite the performance. She’s a force.
🌺
Great reaction. I hope you never have to experience the emotional pain that brought so much passion and soulfulness to this singular talent.
Thanks so much🙏
That's Mama Cass of The Mamas and Papas. Cass was blown away. It was her first time hearing Janis
🥰🥰🥰
Another magnifico review, Aaliyah! Your skills are formidable. Take Care, John
Thank you so much for your kind words💕
Mama Cass knows that she is hearing and seeing something extraordinary.
🥰
The audience member is Mama Cass Elliot, a very well known singer of that time. And yes :) Cass looked like she knew she was watching a brilliant performance :)
The best woman singer🤘
🥰
Aaliyah, you have a beautiful voice! I appreciate your attention to musical detail and your curiosity to learn from Janis. She was special. All I know is something like a bird within her sang...8:40 That is Mama Cass getting her mind blown...
Thank you so much! Thanks for sharing too
That one audience member is Cass Elliot from the Mamas and the Papas. They were big in the 60’s. Great reaction!
Nice to see you again, Aaliyah! Great reaction to the fabulous Janis Joplin! I can see others have already informed you who the audience member you noted was so I won't spend any more time on that. Before you finish with your journey through the catalogue of JJ songs be sure to hit "Summertime" a song she does which is from the musical "Porgy and Bess"!
Thanks for the info!
Great reaction. Your face said it all. Janis was singing but also arguing with the man who put her in a "Ball and Chain". She left her heart on that stage. I glad that you appreciated the talent of this amazing woman.
🥰🥰🥰
Janis was relatively unknown outside the San Fran music scene when this was recorded, while Mama Cass was already well known as a vocalist in a group with several top ten radio hits by this time.
Thanks for sharing
Aaliyah Capili+Janis Joplin=Beautiful Live!
Thank you😍
And you should check out Summertime, Maybe, and Work Me Lord live. There's Piece of My Heart & Bobby McGee (2 of her very popular songs) but she is definitely extraordinary and nobody has a voice like Janis. Many have tried to replicate it. I also love a ballad A Woman Left Lonely she sings beautifully. Turtle Blues is amazing, too. I could go on... I really loved your reaction. ❤❤❤❤❤ I didn't mention Mama Cass because I saw it already in the comments.
Thanks for your recommendations🥰
That is Cass Elliott aka Mama Cass, from The Mamas and The Papas, in the audience. Check them out.
Thanks so much for sharing💕
Great reaction..
Janis=Queen of the Blues
😍
Janice is much more than a song she is a moment with you.....😊
🥰🥰🥰
I LOVE YOU JANIS !
🥰
Watch her do "Raise Your Hand" with Tom Jones - what a treat!
Thanks for sharing
There were a lot of great female folk singers from that era you might want to check out. There was Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell.
Thanks for all the recommendations
She's amazing yeeees
The woman in the audience they zoomed in on a couple of times was a famous singer herself.
Thanks for sharing
How it was done in my generation. 😊 Thank you for appreciating new territory! ❤❤❤
Thanks for watching too♥️♥️♥️
Her voice reminds me a little of Bon Scott from AC/DC, my favorite from Janis is "Mercedes Benz" live
🥰
Janis is from Freeport, Texas. But she left the state to get away from her family. Or so I read.
But I absolutely love her music.
Sadly she's been gone a long time. She died almost at the same time as Jim Morrison
(Lead singer from the Doors) and Jimi Hendrix.
That's for sharing Aaliyah!
You're an amazing young lady!
Thanks so much for sharing🌺
@@AaliyahCapili
You're very welcome sweetie! ☺
She was from Port Arthur Texas born and raised.
@@timr31908
Dammit! I get those two towns mixed up!
Thanks for clearing that up.
thanks so much, Aaliyah! Janis was one-of-a-kind.. just astounding.. so much PASSION! ... as noted below, at this live concert there were some "famous" people... Cass Elliott, for one.. you can see in the audience.. totally mouth agape (with sunglasses)!! appreciate your reaction...
Thanks so much
Yes, she's amazing ❤
🥰
The member of theaudience is Mama Cass, a famous singer in those day’s of the Mama’s and the Papa’s. She’s was completely blown away by Janis, who did something nobody ever did before. She’s the first truly female rockvoice. Many followed her, but none before her like this.
Thanks so much for sharing
When you stopped it at 8:40, that audience member was Mama Cass form The Mamas & The Papas
Thanks for the info
The fan at 9:20 is Cass Elliot, Mama Cass of the band Mama's and the Poppas.
🥰🥰🥰
The lady in the audience is Mama Cass Elliot of The Mamas And The Papas!!!!!!
🥰
That audience member is another amazing musician named Mama Cass...with the Mamas and Papa's. ♥️
Thanks so much for sharing
Thank you for me looking how this song should be appreciated.
Eterna Janis Joplin
🌺
I like how you're such a serious student of music. Based on your previous reactions, I can see you really like Blues Rock. Cool choice.
Thank you very much🥰
Mama Cass Elliot at 11:05, "WOW!" 56 years later, we still agree with Mama Cass.
😍😍😍
Janis, Summertime live 1969 🤯
😍
You should all appreciate how excellent a job that nameless drummer did on this day to hit those slow drum rolls like it was so simple and easy, It's hard for any good drummer to hide mistakes behind a slow beat. I had to replay this to focus on that drumming poetry closer again. The string instruments are okay too.
Thanks for sharing your insights
Mama Cass Eliot lip reading "wow that was really heavy" - I learned that Cass was critical to the mixing of so many greats during that early period of Laurel Canyon (watch Echoes in the Canyon) featuring Joni Mitchell (California and Woodstock). Janis' studio version cover of the song "Summertime" is IMO one of the most sublime and unique vocals performed ever.....ever!
Thanks for sharing!!🌺
I feel like a live performance of Jethro Tull doing "Minstrel in the Gallery" would be right up your alley.
Thanks for your recommendation
Janis was truly something special. So wild, losing herself in the performance. Her power, and her control and nuance were just amazing. She left us too soon.
😔
Cass Elliot (great singer) from the Mamas & the Papas was that awestruck woman in the audience! 😁. Check out her music too! ❤🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the info💕
Awesome video and great reaction young lady. Rock In Peace JJ at the club 27 ❤️💯❤️🇮🇹🇧🇪🇪🇺
🥰
Great reaction!
Thank you!! 🥰
*One of the earliest rock queens in the industry*
😍😍😍
Janis was influenced by the late blues singer, Bessie Smith. Both died at a young age. Bessie's grave remained unmarked until Janis purchased a gravestone. That's how much Janis loved her. Janis was born in Port Arthur, Texas. She was treated poorly by the people there and left. I'm sure she escaped the poor treatment by listening to the blues. When she sang, she embodied her music, giving electrifying performances to the audience. As you can see, there was no light show, special effects, choreographed backup dancers, or designer costumes. Her singing stood on its own, pure, organic, authentic, and unadulterated. Legend is not a big enough word to describe the Queen of Rock. There will only be one Janis Joplin. In my lifetime, I doubt I will see another singer with Janis' unique talent.
Many thanks for sharing all of these🌺
Love your videos, love your knowledge, love the confidence, and yes, you are cool too lol.
Thank you very very much
Love your voice. Glad you included it in your intro.
Oh thank you very much
It's all about the FEELING
🥰
Mama cass was that audience member and she was one of the organizers of the Monterey pop festival in California.
🥰🥰🥰
Good reaction as always, ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊
Thank you!! 😁
If you haven't, it might be a nice reaction trip to do some Mamas & Papas songs where Cass Elliott, the WOW reaction audience member as noted in previous comments, is featured. Their whole catalog is OUTSTANDING TOO with Mama Michelle and the Papas up front too -- known for their harmonies ...
Thanks for sharing
You must get the CD Best of Janis Joplin. She is the best!!
Thanks so much🥰
The great B.B. King said that Janis Joplin was the best female blues singer of all time, black or white!!❤🎉😮❤
Thanks for sharing
Another well done and articulated reaction.
Thanks again!🌺💕🌺
That's Mama cass elliott. From the mama's and the papa's a group from the the sixtys....one of the purest voices in folk ronk.....shes amazed.
Thanks for sharing
I say every time is Mama Cas reacting Janis Joplin.
🥰
At this point a lot of people hadn't heard of Janis Joplin! This performance.... by the end of it...Everyone knew who she was!!! Sadly Janis was only on the scene from 1967 - 1970. She overdosed in 1970 at the age of 27! In three years she turned the music industry upside down for female singers! She made it ok for a female artist to embrace her sexuality through music! Before Janis... women were supposed to be more reserved... prim & proper.
Thanks for sharing
pure raw 100% hippie
🥰
Loved your video, Ms. Capelli ❤️
Personally, the signer whose voice i find pleasant, beautiful, and truly enjoyable is Rosio Durcal
Thank you for sharing, thanks so much♥️♥️♥️
the lady with the sunglasses is mama cass from the mama s and the papa s
Thanks for sharing
I forgot to say jimi was in the same movie you just watched with Janis Joplin. The movie is , The Monterey Pop Festival
Thanks for sharing Mr. Patrick🌺
Can not imagine what that is like listening to the performance with headphones, never mind being at the concert. . . :>/
🥰🥰🥰
RIP Janis Joplin Unfortunately Janis passed away of an overdose aged just 27 years old. She was alone, without her partner & staying in a Hotel the night of her sad death. Who knows what kind of amazing tunes Janis could have produced if she had lived longer.
Luckily for us, today music such as Janis' can be accessed on a device in moments via YT & Spotify etc. [No more waiting to buy music from a store anymore!]
🌺🌺🌺
She died before I was born, but has always been my favorite female vocalist. She was known as the Queen of the Blues (for her generation). Kokomo Taylor born in the 20s before Janis was dubbed Queen of the Blues and Mami Smith born before her. Bessie Smith was an inspiration to Janis and was known as Empress of the Blues. ❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing💕
Janis was born to sing the blues 💙 it's so unfortunate that she passed When her career was about to get big 😢
That was none other than Mama Cass of the Mamas & Pappas (sunglasses)
😔
What to say always great
Thank you for your very active reaction to Janis. Seems you really appreciate the music. You even showed a lot of patience while the guy was tuning his guitar at the beginning.
Thank you so much!
If you awe Mamma Cass you've done something special.
🥰
Queen of Detroit Blues!
🥰
That was Mama Cass Elliott who was a huge star at the time with the Mamas and the Papas. The Mamas and Papas had worked real hard to put on this festival, there's a documentary that's worth watching. So basically Mama Cass booked her and didn't know what she was going to see until that point.
Thanks for sharing
Yes, now you must discover not only Cass Elliot, but Joe Cocker as well, perhaps the only other white singer of the 60s who had as much soul as Janis.
Thanks for the recommendations
You are listening to a Queen, Aaliyah. Janis was G.O.A.T. in her genre.
🥰🥰🥰
Hi Aaliyah, Good reaction! Janis performed twice at this festival, this one was filmed and is the sunday performance and in my opinion it is not as "tight" nor as good as the saturday one.
Saturday performance can be found on a compilation album.
Best rendition of the song by her is on the Cheap Thrills album.
There is one & only Janis Joplin and she sang her heart out to the very limits, every time 🙂
I suggest you try Kozmic Blues live Toronto 70 or Little Girl Blue live 69 or Get It While You Can live TV
Thanks you very much for all the recommendations🌺
Ciao Aaliyah! Grazie per tutto ciò che fai, sei meravigliosa! Ti adoro ❤️😍🌸
Thanks so much, love lots♥️
There was a LOT of acid going down that weekend. I’d say you’re right, they were enjoying it.
😊
