I only learnt of this spin off about a month ago and I've enjoyed all the episodes. The failure of this show is a clear example of people's resistance to change. Yes Dorothy is gone and there are some new characters but the series is quite entertaining and could have had at least about three seasons.

When I've watched The Golden Girls a little too much I come to The Golden Palace. It's a bit different and I adore it. Such a cute show. Strong writing 💖 The 3 lead characters seem stronger too.
What makes it so impactful is the fact that these people are gone now... so when they walk away from eachother it makes it that much more hard to watch
I miss Dorothy. I miss all the Golden Girls now. I bet heaven is in fits of laughter though. I hope there’s a cheesecake there just for the girls. And miles cheating on her “just cuz he fell in love by accident” with Fern and was ready to marry her and choose her quickly over Rose shows a lot to me that it was possibly about bloom off the rose … only picking Fern cuz she was newer . I think I know what was wrong with this show. There were two men and a kid. If they kept the theme of aging women and brought in a snooty French lady chef and an aging vixen for the concierge position who would be Blanche's competition for the rich male patrons, the theme would have stayed. Throw in some female housemaids (including one who is a petrified illegal immigrant who is too scared to speak) and you have a cast. The biggest selling point of the original were the golden girls themselves.
Needed someone snarky with Dorothy's personality. Yes, I know Bea didn't want to do it but they could've had the gay caterer who was Dorothy's equal play the part. Perhaps it was still too early in tv land to have a gay character as a lead.
If I had to guess, I kinda get a more pushy vibe with the spin off. But if it's not that, I'd have to say because they were thinking the show was gonna go on anyway for at least a couple to few more seasons (they even had a second season get greenlit before it was cancelled), and having Miles around still would just mean plot wise they'd have to either have Rose marry him, which would mean she'd have to go live with Miles. Or they'd have to find some kind of way to kill him off, which probably wouldn't go over well either. Or somehow go for cheap and say the mafia that the Cheese man was a part of is after him again and have him split, which would be tiring and repetitive to have happen again. Could also be that they had to find a way to write him off if the actor for Miles couldn't keep coming back as much, but even with what I noted I think I would've preferred at least a cheap repetitive fling about the mafia/mob than Miles just plain splitting from Rose like that.
How come there are no such sitcoms featuring elderly people now? All I see is Teen-Wolf-esque young people dominating screen time. Starting to think you are allowed to be 20 these days
They did Miles dirty in this episode-he would never have done that to Rose. My guess they were just hoping there would be more than one season and this way Rose was open to dating and having more humor in the series then.
Wasn't there a joke about Roland playing solitaire in this episode? There is a joke on the card in the front, so I was expecting solitaire joke, but it didn't come out. maybe my delusion?
WHY did the writers make the other woman's name "Fern"?!!! That was so lazy. Clearly they intentionally picked another Botanical name for Rose's antagonist.

Miles Webber, how dare you?!? You have the sweetest and most wonderful girl in Miami! What the hell?! I can't believe this! ...Alright, maybe I'm getting a little too invested in the story. But this is the best episode so far! I've laughed multiple times, especially when Blanche and Roland had to bow in front of the dining room after Rose stormed off saying she never wanted to speak to Blanche again, that felt a LOT like classic Golden Girls. So did Sophia's "Why can't I feel guilt?" line, and Rose angrily throwing the potato into the kitchen.
