Ive used distilled vinegar for descaling my espresso & coffe pots for over 25 years, but realized we were almost out of vinegar, but had citric acid which I figured woukd have been safe. As I thought about it I remeber a commercial descaler we used at a coffee house was composed of citric acid. Descaling now & noticing a good amount of scale in the catch badin so clearly it works & likely better than vinegar.

Hi Hoon. I just saw your video about descaling process and I would like to share with you that at least here in Brazil Breville recommend to use Vinager to descale the coffee machine. This recommendation is written in user guide.

Citric acid can be found in the canning/preserving section of most grocery stores. A 7.5 ounce, $6 jar will go a long way.

the technicians don't want us doing it 'cause they're sick of fixing peoples machine where people have descaled and cooked their boilers up....so make sure to always in descaling we are filling the boiler as we flush out the citric acid. Thanks Hoon.

I do the descaling with 50/50 vinegar and water. No need for expensive products. Vinegar is non toxic as well and environmental friendly.

No exactly environment friendly. It takes 55 litres of water to dilute 1 litre of vinegar vs 5 litres of water to a litre of citric acid solution

I used 100% undiluted white vinegar in my humidifier, let it sit for hrs, and then scrub… it only removed about half the calcium build up, which lead me to looking into diy descaler

Acetic acid in vinegar will eat and obliterate your gaskets. Citric acid is not as strong as acetic acid.

Vinegar eats aluminum which the heating vessel is made of. It will eventually eat through and leak.

Lemishine works excellent too. It’s a dishwasher descaler and it works wonders. It took a nasty SS dishwasher and made it look brand spanking new on the inside.

Makes sense since the main ingredient of lemishine is likely citric acid. Lemishine is not safe to ingest however, I would stick with citric acid.

This gentleman is absolutely correct. Vinegar not only is retained in the difficult to remove scales maintaining the strong odor. I stopped using vinegar when I ruined my sprayer as it chewed up the neoprene rubber valve, only VITON rubber valves and O rings inside your automatic coffee maker will survive vinegar attack and I am not sure if your fancy automatic coffee machines have these expensive VITON components inside , this means that it is only OK to use vinegar in regular coffee pots. I'll choose citric acid instead for my automatic unit.

There are tables you can find online which show the effect of vinegar vs citric acid on o rings made of different materials. Citric acid was definitely safer to use compared to vinegar in that it affected the least kinds of materials.

My breville won’t froth milk, it barely gives any hot water out the hot water spout and it won’t make a shot of coffee it has no pressure I’ve tried cleaning and descaling it but w no pressure I feel like if that was problem it can’t clean properly my cleaning light is not on either but was trying to figure out what is wrong. I was wondering do you have any ideas on what could be wrong or what I can do to fix my 1 year old machine. I’m so sad wout my breville everyday and would appreciate any advice or ideas you have to offer Thanks and I have appreciated learning how to make a perfect espresso and how to use my machine properly I hope you can help w this too🤞🏼

Personally, I'm going to use Breville or more specifically Breville's approved sub (OEM) manufacturer's products especially when it comes to chemicals or filters used to treat the water or descaling.
It depends upon the components in your broiler's walls, citric acid is a corrosion inhibitor to aluminum whereas acetic acid (vinegar) can cause corrosion to aluminum. My advice is to find out exactly the type of acid or acids recommended for your particular coffee machine.
To my understanding, Breville ($14/4 pack) uses a powdered citric acid and tartaric acid concentrate and Cafetto ($9/4 pack) is the manufacturer.
Examples I will only use Breville's water filter ($15/ea), OEM Cafetto Restore Espresso Machine Descaler ($2.25/ea) and Cino Cleano Espresso Machine Cleaning Tablet ($1/ea). Obviously there's cheaper stuff but start reading where people have actually damaged their machines are caused an assortment of problems it just simply isn't worth it especially risking voiding your warranty. Spending an obscene amount on all sorts of gadgetry and crap not to mention extremely expensive coffee and in a cheap out on something that could damage or permanently change the taste .. NO THANKS!
