Regarding an episode not being a favourite...that has to be put into context in Buffy. There are no really bad episodes in this show. This means that "not my favourite episode" doesn't mean its a bad episode, it only means that people liked other episodes better.
PS: Don't you think it's a bit of a double standard that you find Xanders obsession with Buffy annoying but think that Willows obsession with Xander is cute and adorable?

I don't like Xander (At least in the early seasons, by the last two-ish he'd become so much more tolerable), like to the point a friend of mine sends me Xander gifs/screencaps to arouse my anger, but I'd never write him off as badly written. An episode like The Zeppo wouldn't be as gripping and important to the show if he was. Faith is similar. I cannot stand her, but damn if she's not a fascinating character to watch. Liking characters isn't always the point, and using how much you do as a measurement of what they bring to the table of the writing is flawed thinking.

Seriously there will probably be random fans claiming that "this is not a fan favorite" for every single episode. Sometimes I just wonder why they even are fans to begin with (is there anything they like?) but I have always assumed that it boils down to them having watched and analyzed every single episode to death so they have started to nitpick on tiny irrelevant pieces.

    • @troikas3353
      @troikas3353 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I mean there are definitely specific episodes of this show that have never been well liked by the majority of its audience, even when they first aired, and are often mentioned as being weaker entries. Given the show is twenty+ years old now, those more unpopular episodes are pretty well known and established in the fan community so people probably kind of expect new watchers to not care for them. Doesn't mean no one ever likes them though, they just aren't favorite episodes of the majority of fans and that's fine. Some people will like those episodes, some people will dislike the really popular episodes. Just how art is. Like there's an episode in S4 that is widely disliked which I personally never had an issue with. But even when discussing "weaker" episodes for Buffy, they still tend to stand out in some way compared to other shows. I don't think the show has anything rated lower than a 6 on IMDB and those are uncommon. Even with it's age, limited budget and antiquated effects the show still stands up.

Nicholas Brendon gets so much hate for his portrayal of Xander Harris. So much so that years ago at comic con an audience member said he was annoying to watch on screen and the actor took it personally and stepped offstage to compose himself. Then an actress (I cannot say who they are cuz it's spoilery) spoke up to defend him and said to the audience, "Remember guys, just because we're actors doesnt mean we don't have feelings. So please be nice." Then Nicky came back onstage and did his best to move on. It pained me to watch a person get hurt like that. I dont know how people can't separate the actor from the character.
I literally don't understand the hate. Out of all the characters in Buffy, he's the one that people go after the most and are extremely harsh on him. When really there are other characters who have been way worse than him.
And to be honest, Xander and Buffy are the only two characters I like. And just because I didn't like Willow from the start, doesn't mean I hate her or have anything agaisnt her. That character is someone I'm indifferent to. That's all.
I like Buffy beacuse she's chosen to protect the world against evil, she's kind, loving, friendly and respectful towards others.
I like Xander because he's nice, friendly, big jokester, cares for his loved ones, supportive of his friends even in their darkest times and as we've seen he will fight to the death for his loved ones. In the end, he's someone you can count on to be there for you. I would like to add another major reason why I like him the most but that is a major spoiler. After the start of Season 3, I'll reveal why I like him the most out of all these characters (excluding Buffy, of course).
I can't say much about the others without divulging too much information. So I'll leave it here for now.

I think it's cool that those are your two favorite characters (especially considering the metaphor). Xander is not a favorite of mine, but I will always defend him. I tend to have a different interpretation of his behavior than a lot of people do. I am wondering though how much you know about Nicholas Brendon? It may or may not shed a light on the public's opinion of him. I really hope he gets the proper mental health treatment and healing he seems to need.

    • @yvetterodriguez2550
      @yvetterodriguez2550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@samanthas8340 Hey. Thanks for your feedback Samantha. Thanks for not being rude and mean like most people do when they don't agree with you or when they don't view things the same way.
But yeah, I dont know Nick's entire life but just enough to know how hard his life has been. It's sad really. I keep in mind how he has said that the happiest time of his life was doing the show and that he wished it never ended. He said if it was up to him, he'd do it forever 🥺. He identified more to the character when the character displayed his love for his friends.
The dark parts of Xander is Joss, who wrote his characteristics into that character. Joss had said that growing up he was very much Xander, the uncool guy who got picked on. I hope people take that into account.
I also think about how Nick said years ago that he was told to gain weight after Season 3 because his character isn't suppose to be good looking, fit or attractive whatsoever. Nick didn't like gaining weight. It made him feel crappy. Which is why he then turned to alcohol at times. You can see the weight gain after Season 4. After the show ended, he became alcoholic.
And to make it worse, it sure doesn't help when you do conventions and people tell you that you suck or that you're so annoying when people are referring to your character. I saw this video of someone telling him that. He was hurt by those words which is why he steps offstage and takes a sec to compose himself and get back onstage and continue. Eliza had his back and told people to be nice cuz though they are actors, they have feelings too. And that person who said that had no remorse cuz she then mocked him as he was stepping offstage and said something along the lines of, "oh boo hoo, did I hurt your feelings?" That was hard to watch.
Oh and another moment was at the Paley Convention Center where the cast reunited for the first time years later and for some reason Seth Green (Oz) kept making these digs at him. If I remember correctly, he refers to Nick's gf at the time as a stripper IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. The whole audience gasped and was like oooohh 👀. You then see Charisma elbow Seth and tells him to knock it off. Nick didn't even look at Seth and acted like he didn't hear the question and then proceeds to answer the audience member's question. That was awful to see. I don't know what made Seth act like that but that was so not cool. It honestly made me not like Seth because if he can act like that and say offensive things to a former cast member in front of everyone, then imagine what he's like when the camera's not on. And he could've just not said anything at all to him but no. Throughout the interview he just kept making these offensive remarks here and there only at him. Everyone was laughing and you can see some of the actors not laugh and look uncomfortable. And Seth's just sitting there looking like, "did I say something wrong?"
I don't care if someone had an awful day. There's just no reason to treat anyone like that when they did nothing to you. That just shows me who you really are and it's not great.
And just like you Samantha, I also wish Nick gets the right help and fights his demons.

My favourites are Xander, Cordelia, Redacted, Buffy, Redacted.
I totally agree about other characters doing WAY worse but being forgiven by the audience. I think it's because Xander's sins have a habit of being things teenagers went through in real life (without the monster metaphor the rest of real life is painted with). It's hard to compare someone being a vampire to stuff we face in real life and Xander gets a lot of misdirected hate for that.

Xander is honest, and many times what he says is the truth but it's just said a little harsh. But then again he is 16yo boy who has had pretty harsh life.

I think this brings up an interesting dichotomy in our society. When a guy is interested in a girl who *doesn't* return those feelings, as with Xander and Buffy, we judge the man and tell him he needs to move on. Yet when a woman is interested in a guy who isn't, i.e. Willow and Xander, we "wish the guy would see what's in front of him." I'm not sure exactly what this says about us but I do find that difference both interesting and a bit disturbing.

Since cass has made it to S2, E18. I will only discuss that far.
      Spoilers below
A big part of the Buffy/Xander confusion with audiences is because the plan changed. It was originally supposed to be two love triangles that ended up with Buffy/Xander pairing up at the end of S1 and Angel leaving after his 5 episode stint. Fan response kept Angel around and got him in the ship with Buffy instead.
So in S1, Buffy actually did have feelings for Xander but was more worried about losing Willow as a friend. It's only in S2 it gets soft retconned so Buffy never felt that way and so it's kind of changed how people percieve Xander in S1. He comes across as creepily persistant in regards to Buffy because of that change to her feelings between seasons.

I always felt like The Pack was written more to explore the episodes monster-of-the-week premise and Xander was just slotted into it as the focus by default because hes the one main male character. I feel like any implications about his character beyond the obvious could be taken with grains of salt as I don’t think this episode was ever really meant to actually, specifically, explore Xander as a person.

Angel was only supposed to be in 5 episodes originally. With Buffy/Xander becoming the canon ship in S2. But fan response to Angel/Buffy confused Joss by how much they wanted it. So by the time S2 came around, the plotline had been changed and Angel didn't get written out.
All the Xander interest in Buffy, was originally returned in S1. Buffy was supposed to be into him but worried about losing Willow. Joss loves love triangles and he really wanted S1 to have two of them that ended with his author avatar ending up with the heroine. But on rewatches knowing Buffy doesn't actually feel that way in S2, it changes how we remember/think about S1 Buffy/Xander when it first aired.

I love the difference in body language Nick B makes work to show hyena Xander compared with normal goofy Xander. He just kind of oozes. "He's already is possessed by a puppy. It's just his normal personality." Bwaah, loved that. I love that the show is willing to make one of the core characters do really dodgy things this early in its first season, even if it is under possession. It shows some real narrative bravery. And god, your face when Flutie is killed reflects how most of us felt the first time we saw it - it's such a dark thing to do.

  • @Jessica_Roth
    @Jessica_Roth ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's also not surprising that Xander was attracted to Buffy when he was hyena-possessed, because hyenas are matriarchal, so they would be drawn to "alpha" females such as One Girl in all the World Buffy. Obviously the hyena-kids were influenced by the hyenas beyond where they'd normally go, since Xander isn't REALLY a rapist and the other kids most likely were not cannibals.
You'll rarely see the recurring villains in a whole run of episodes, because Joss Whedon had to promise the network it wouldn't be all vampires, since at this point supernatural shows hadn't been performing well at all, and they were worried that "nothing but vampires" would be too limiting a concept. And, on a practical point, the more you use recurring actors, the more they want to get paid. (Also, you can't do much daytime location shooting if the episode is about vampires, and night shoots are more complicated and sometimes throw the schedule off.)
Even if Angel isn't as old as David Boreanaz (who's 8 years older than Sarah Michelle Gellar), he's probably at least a bit older than Buffy, since he doesn't go to school. I mean, he could be a 16-year-old dropout, but that seems unlikely.

Although Xander as a predator may have been certain about things, puppy Xander may still be confused about it all. His body feels about Buffy one way, while his heart feels about Willow another way and for him, it may be confusing. Especially if the physical is more important than the emotional. The hope is that, now that he is no longer possessed, he can begin to clarify the things he learned while so. Which is why he is pretending to have memory loss. A pretty decent episode for S1. Good reaction I think the show has grabbed you now. On small technical criticism of the title is Hyenas are usually referred to collectively as a Clan, not a Pack. You don’t survive if you go after the strongest prey and they know Buffy is not weak. So they turn on Lance.
Also keep this in mind when passing judgement on Xander’s behavior. He’s not in possession, pardon the pun, of his normal demeanor, acting as more animal than man. A sixteen year old, powered mainly by his hormones, teenage male. Mistakes, regrettably, will be made.

Buffy really is one of the greatest shows hiding in plain sight looking like a plain teen dramedy.
Still, the show has some weak points, and unfortunately one of them is some characters development gets sacrificed so other characters can get the uber development we all love. It's not due to a lack of care or skill on the production company's part, just a failing in the format of a show only 44 minuted long written and produced so hecticly.
So, you will hear of fans not being nearly in love with Xander as others. This is due to this failing. One of the things I absolutelj love about tbis show is how knowing a character's history indorms the actions of them later. Everything they do is motivated in some way by there past experiences. Of course, people are complicated, and not all their past can be shown.
For Xander, this is especially true. Now, don't worry, I'm not going to spoil anything, but I will give you a big piece of Xander advice that will make his character much better. Be very aware of everything, even his quippy little jokes, about his past and his life not shown. He tells us a lot more about himself than most people know.
He often gets ignored as the plucky comical relief, but he's a bit like Chandler in his always using jokes.
All the characters in the show do things at times that seem out of character, but if you watch the details closely, yoi will find things there that actually show different aspects of the character hiding under the surface. Of course, don't worry if you miss some. This show is actually better the second time around as we all miss so much the first time through. It's kind of why Buffy has such a strong reactor fanbase. Even after watching the show a dozen times through, sometimes a reactor or a commenter will point out something I never saw before.

Usually you won't be able to infer any specific details and sometimes would just build anticipation - for example, if the title alludes to some mystery finally being solved, well, we expected it to be solved at some point, right? In that situation, a spoiler would be providing details of how it is going to be solved, and episode titles do not do that.

Xander is very much a teenage boy, with the good and especially the bad points of that stage of a man's life. The girls are teenagers too, but women grow up sooner than men.
16:00 Wiillow is ilove with Xander, but she is not naive or easily manipulated, she's smarter than that.
    Spoiler Space
The Master Vampire is the 'Big Bad' for season one, but does not feature in a many episodes because the vampires live below the graveyard and SMG had a phobia about graveyards. They still do 'Monster-of-the Week' episodes for most of the first few series interspersed with those that carry on the story of the 'big bad'.

Most episodes not done by Quinn Martin or Glen Larson don't have titles, or at least ones that get shown, at least since the late 80s. Almost have to go the F*R*I*E*N*D*S wayy with the "one about the" for describing especially when they are "cold" opening ones or have no opening credits at all. Like soap operas with episode number 1357 or the like.

The pack? A well defined musculature, or a convenient method of beverage combo? I like 12 can ones, but consumption ruins my definition, what little there is.

I find my favourite episodes tend to be the fandoms least favourites. So, just enjoy the ones you enjoy. Because this is in my top 20 episodes. Honestly, Season 1 is one of my favourite seasons.
As someone who has been in the fandom since the beginning, it's interesting to see how the public opinion on pretty much every character has changed over the years.
Xander used to be a lot more liked and I think it's because he's the comic relief. Comedy ages the fastest out of all forms of media and some of the jokes in the show are the things that really stand out as dated now. Xander in 1997 was incredibly progressive for a teenage guy. Xander in the last decade is now outdated by the last few crops of more modern guys in media.
Also, a lot of subtext/body language in this show does intentionally point towards things. A few times over the series though, it's from a scrapped plotline and only a red herring left in. So lets see what the body language you picked up this episode turns out to be :)
. A couple plotlines might seem like bad writing in the future. But once you find out the original plan for that arc, the bad writing suddenly makes perfect sense and it was only a rushed timeline that didn't give them time to clean up the scene. I know this happens at least 3 times in the series and I wonder if people can notice them when they occur now that I said something.

The Xander hate is a new age thing. I love Xander I named my son after him. It is OK if you like Xander too ❤ he is a good and flawed character just like every other character in this show. They all have issues but people unjustly look down at him while simontaniously excusing other characters for similar behavior.

It's not as much of an issue in season one, it's more for later seasons, but some titles of future episodes will definitely spoil a major aspect of the episode or an ongoing plotline. If there is any way you have of making it so you don't see episode titles as you go to watch them, that'd be preferable, and there are help threads or watchlists or something online which will tell you in advance which episode numbers to not read in advance.
It wouldn't be for every episode, it'd only be for a select few in each season.

I don't think that ever happened in BtVS.

One of my least favorite episodes of the show ... but still definitely has its moments :)
Also, are you by any chance related to @fictionaldarling? 🤔

For me this is the first bad episode we got. There's no real explanation why the zoo keeper is doing what he's doing. Aside from the Principal death and where that'll eventually lead to, there's no reason for me to ever watch this again (aside from a refresher with react channels).
I do agree about the Hyena possession bringing out Xander's primal nature, its how Xander feels without the ability to control himself.
Nicholas Brendan has a twin in case you don't know.
