I think a logical one to do next about the early years of Starfleet, would be the surprising bond forged between them and the Andorians. I kinda thought they would be the next race after the Vulcans, but I guess the Romulans does make sense.

  • @UncleMikeDrop

The Romulans should have paid closer attention to the early relations between Earth and Vulcan particularly the elements of EarthGov frustrated with what they felt to be the Vulcans holding them back. The Tal'Shiar could have covertly reached out to these Earthmoving members and offered the tech that fbe Vulcans were keeping from them. They would of course, know everything about this tech. Subvert and co-opt. Before anyone knew what was happening, the Sol System would've been beholden to the Romulan Star Empire. I would love a sort of Star Trek Elseworlds story where something like this happened.

Okay, an Elseworlds Mirror Universe Story where the RSA immediately begins subverting EarthGov (isn't that a B5 reference? Whatever).
      .
The Mad Pirate Zefram "Big Z" Cochrane stood over the remains of the dead knife-ears. Raiding the technology of their warp-capable shuttle, he sets about reunifying the scattered fragments of the once glorious Grand Empire after its betrayal by Khan Noonien Singh, the man that should have been their savior. With the technology to make advanced personal energy weapons for his new Elite Guard of Helena, he sweeps across the Western Hemisphere in a mere decade, and soon has low orbit craft with energy weapons attacking the European Dominion. In a week, London falls, and the upstart self-proclaimed ruler is eliminated. Dr. Soong is soon found, and Emperor Cochrane declares him and all Augment Technology too dangerous for the Empire to risk using again in such numbers, and Soong is eliminated. Within his own lifetime, Cochrane becomes the first true Emperor of Earth since the Augment Wars. The planet is unified, but the mysterious knife-ears never appear again before his assassination by his own concubine, who declares herself Empress of Earth.
      .
The more-disciplined Romulans hear about this race of savages from their informants in the Vulcan government, and decide to go have a look. Simple bobbing of the ears is all that's done for infiltration, and they realize that this war-like race of apes are much like they used to be, and a potential rival.. or a potential tool in their quest to expand the Romulan Star Empire. After all, they'd make great foot soldiers and lower ranked crew.. but, how to do this?
      .
The Romulan Star Empire watches and plans as the Earth Empire attacks and reconquers its Martian Colony, then subjugates the colony on Titan and moves to terraform Ganymede, before building a military outpost on Pluto. They've secured their own solar system, and mastered the primitive, small scale warp drives the Vulcan shuttle had used, giving them the ability to get anywhere within their own solar system in hours or a couple of days. They're at the cusp of colonizing other solar systems - and this is when the Romulans make their presence known.
      .
"The Vulcans will enslave you." They warn. "But we wish to help you against our mutual, hated enemy. They have not forgotten that you killed their people sixty years ago, they are merely waiting for you to do all the work for them before they invade and conquer you." The new Emperor of Earth, who's position, too, was manipulated into being by Romulan agents, takes this offer seriously. After all, conquest by force of arms isn't the only answer to expansion. The Romulans don't realize it, but he's plotting to stab them in the back - a practice significantly decreased since the Augment Wars, but still done to an extent. First, he needs to embrace the concept of the Carpetbagger and Yankee Peddler - get them to give him what he wants, and make them think Earth is not only getting a raw deal, but let the Romulans leave thinking they've won.
      .
The Emperor and his closest confidants arrange to have their own spies counter-infiltrate the Romulans through an arranged exchange of "labor for goods" - Earthlings provide "free" labor to the Romulans, and the Romulans give the Earthlings some twice-outdated technology in return. People that are experts in acting stupid, or being seductive, become house servants, concubines, and more to Romulan senators, admirals, and generals, with a particular spy who's name becomes lost to Imperial history code-named Mata Hari becoming the human "private escort" to the 4th most-senior member of the Tal'Shiar High Command. Enjoying their human slaves, whom their own government doesn't seem to care about, the Romulans very quickly become complacent. Earthlings now do all the hard and dirty work, while the Romulans give them outdated technology that would leave them at a significant disadvantage against any Vulcan vessels.
      .
The Earth Empire, however, is already fully aware that their "new friends" think they're cheating them, but the technology they're getting is far superior to the reverse-engineered Vulcan shuttle tech. Soon, Earth begins constructing the ISS Intrepid in 2115 - the name selected as a message, and to honor an American Empire ship from the time of the American Revolution. The first serious star ship, using the tech the Romulans gave them, but with their own improvements, it should be capable of Warp 3.2 for a short time. No match for a Warp 4 Romulan Frigate, but better than nothing. Primitive laser weaponry, and a devastating biological "injection torpedo" round out the arsenal. The goal? Piracy of the highest order - they would "prove" to their "Romulan sponsors" that they could fight the Vulcans, by raiding lone Vulcan ships. Intrepid and her sister ISS Revenge do just that, but they intentionally attack Vulcan civilian ships, making sure to radiate Romulan-like warp signatures.
      .
Meanwhile, the Earth Empire discovers Denobula. Seeing a chance to make their own Client State, they don't bother to invade, they simply state that "in the name of the Romulan Empire," Denobula belongs to them. Since the Denobulans didn't have a very organized military, a simple demonstration of Earth's Weapons of Mass Destruction - a Chemical Weapon on one city, a Biological on another, and a Radiological "Super Dirty Bomb" on a third is all that's needed. The Denobulans are quickly made clear that it is Earth, not Romulus, that they answer to. The Romulans, of course, see this as a threat - Earth is growing too bold, they fear, but the Earth Empire reassures them that this means more slaves for Romulus, and "taking initiative" is something that Earthlings have as a common racial trait. Placated, but wary, the Tal'Shiar begins drawing up plans to sabotage Earth's manufacturing capability, and blame it on the "hated" Vulcans.
      .
Mata Hari warns Earth of what's to come. Intrepid and Revenge are ready, but they are only two capital ships. The next generation of ship is still to come, and under secret development at Luna Station, the Warspite Class. Using technology again stolen from the Vulcans, and now assisted by the Denobulans, the Earth Empire prepares to complete the betrayal of the Romulans in spectacular fashion - by genocide. By 2137, the first of the new class, ISS Warspite, is ready. However, Warspite herself is a Trojan Horse. Using sensor signal emitters, the devious Earth Empire makes it seem like Warspite has a powerful M/AM engine and nacelles that should be Warp 5 capable, and an armament system with extraordinarily powerful beam weaponry.
      .
It's all a ruse. Warspite has a different mission. Sent to Romulus to show off to their erstwhile allies the fruits of Earth labor, and promising them a fleet of these to use in the expansion of the Romulan Empire, the Romulan Advisor sent aboard is taken hostage. Warspite has a tiny crew, barely enough to run her, and they're all volunteers - for a suicide mission. Approaching Romulus, Warspite's crew forces the now-tortured Romulan to signal all clear and let the ship past the Home System Defenses. While approaching standard orbit, Warspite's engines come to life at full power. Yes, she's capable of speeds of Warp 5, but only for a brief moment, before her engine overloads. Jettisoning escape pods and taking their chances, Warspite's crew aims the ship at the Romulan capital city, engages the engines, and warps the ship into the planet at just under Warp 5.
      .
      Devastation is total.
      .
Everywhere across Romulan client worlds and colonies, the "slaves" ruse is over, and these specially trained military operatives begin massive resistance and revolutionary activities, spurring other slaves and "pet species" of the Romulans to do the same. Romulan High Command ceases to exist, and the system commanders, lacking any control from Romulus, panic and fall into disorder.
      .
A month later, a massive invasion fleet led by Intrepid and Revenge, along with all of the Earth Empire's lesser ships, each one bloated with landing and boarding parties, reach the borders of the Romulan Star Empire. World after world is brought down, Romulan ships are captured, bio-injection torpedoes used to kill their crews. Repaired and rebranded as Earth Empire property, they're turned against their former masters. Within three years, almost all of the Romulan Star Empire's holdings are absorbed by the United Earth Empire. By 2150, the UEE is ready to christen their new Warp 5 capable ship, the NX-type ISS Enterprise class, with heavily adapted Romulan weapons, engines, shields, and most importantly, cloaking technology.
      .
Instead of the conquest of Vulcan, Andor, and Telar Prime, the UEE has absorbed the much larger Romulans as well as Denobula, and now have THEM as their slaves. They stand poised in the mid-2100's as one of the largest empires by territory in the known galaxy, with a fleet of ex-Romulan ships at their disposal, as well as a new series of updated and improved domestically-produced vessels that incorporate improvements to those designs, now a serious threat to the Klingons, and a significant threat to the other local powers...

A subject for another Enterprise-era video occurred to me when you were talking about how the Romulans saw Earth as the unifying force of the coalition, and thus targeted mainly Starfleet vessels.
Of course, at this early stage the UFP hadn't been formed and Starfleet was still a solely-Terran outfit - and yet the other races had their own ships in the coalition as well...
The question popped into my head: _"Where did they learn how to fly those ships, if not at Starfleet Academy...?"_
I think it's assumed that, by the time of the later Trek series, the Starfleet of the UFP teaches ship operations not just to the crews of their own NCC-numbered ships but also for other Federation races to command, maintain and crew their races' own navies and commercial/industrial/civilian ships. But where did, say, Vulcans learn to run their ships before Starfleet Academy accepted non-human appicants...?
It feels like there's a few untold stories about the various non-Starfleet training academies in the pre-Federation days. I'm guessing it will be one of those 'based mainly in beta canon' episodes as I doubt anyone has bothered to mention such establishments in Memory Alpha sources beyond maybe a passing comment, but it's an idea which caught my interest...

Or also, think of NATO and how they have certain things standardized, like the famous 5.56 NATO rounds or datalinks and coms, and now many allies of the US are buying the F-35. Given enough time and inner stability, Starfleet would go from joint operations to training together, to sharing techs and eventually using the same technology and military schools

      @barry3612 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Same reason airplanes can have many different wing types. The physics of warp are the same in all ships but the method and the construction can vary greatly. Here in the real world airplanes wings come in many shapes and sizes, Delta wings, Swept Wings, Bi-planes, and even lifting body vehicles which have no wings using the entire body of the aircraft for lift. In star trek like the real world there are not only different orientations for the same job but there's even a degree of variation in how the warp bubble is even generated as is the case where Romulus ships create a singularity which is used to power the warp reaction. The only rule we know of for warp capable vessels design wise, is that they must contain a device/component (usual in the form of two nacelles) which is used to conduct the warp bubble around the space craft. This device must be able to cover the complete circumference of the main body of the vehicle . Starfleet ships have an even number of nacelles (except a few exceptions) which are placed in locations where there must be a continuous line of site between each, something to do with energy conducted between them for the warp bubble. (this is all technobabble anyways, don't worry too much about the specifics.) While Vulcan ships at least in the 22nd century have a similar device in the form of a ring used for the same purpose, presumable they use less energy to maintain the bubble this way but maybe with lower speeds. In the real world the Alcubier drive which is a theoretical warp drive like FTL method uses a similar ring like structure to help with the folding of space around the vessel. This all to my best understanding of the star trek lore and of real world engineering principles mainly that there usually isn't one way to complete any one task but different ways normally have pros and cons.

I have only one gripe against ST: E's Romulan war thing. When the Federation's starship Enterprise was investigating the outposts destroyed along the Neutral Zone, they were perplexed about how some kind of ghost would obliterate each outpost. When they discovered the threat were Romulans, and that they had a cloaking device, all were very surprised. The speculation of the output to keep a ship hidden logically explained why they had to de-cloak to attack and raise their shields. It was a lovely sci-fi worldbuilding thing for Star Trek to re-introduce Submarine naval combat into space battles and they kind of did some lazy writing to do the relentless torpedo chasing the ship but I digress. They also made the warship a tiny one that was made for sheer offense and its job (like the Defiant decades later). Alright, here's my gripe. Sorry, took a long time to get to that. **ducks** Who threw that? Nevermind. The cloaking thing. Each new Star Trek fiction makes cloaking an earlier and earlier thing that each empire that had it have it. In Star Trek, or ST: The Original Series (TOS), that technology was developed long after the Federation-Romulan war and not used until that ST: TOS episode. It was NEW TECHNOLOGY then. They didn't go as lazy-writing as Star Trek: Discovery did with Klingon's bad excuse for cloaking devices but they still, Romulans were beat back into the Romulan territory and agreed to a Neutral Zone because they had no advantage over the Federation... like, CLOAKING TECHNOLOGY that no-one else had until that Star Trek episode. And, don't give me that "the Klingons had a form of it" crap. No, they didn't... not until the Romulans gave it to them later in ST: TOS... they apparently got friendly with them because the UFP was their shared enemy.
Rewriting canon to say things they had were developed earlier than they were pretty much ruins and re-writes the history many of us (as life-long fans) knew for decades. As prototypes, cool. As commonly deployed things that are stable enough to be trusted as common things, not cool. Gene Roddenberry might have been an unrealistic opportunist as well as a man of his era (in negative ways) but he would not have allowed the virtual assassination of his life's work here... the Star Trek story's history and believable canon. ST: E did a perfect job explaining the cosmetic differences. But, they totally dropped the ball on EVERYTHING cloak technology via the Romulans... aside from the fact that they always focused on misdirection, espionage, security, and stealth technology.

In The Original Series the Romulans appear in the first season episode "The Balance of Terror". Their ships are cloaked and have powerful plasma weapons but lack warp capability. The absence of warp drive begs the question "How did the Romulans forge an interstellar empire?" It's also at odds with their wide ranging activities in Enterprise.

    • @TullyBascombe
      @TullyBascombe 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@colinmaclaughlanweir9670 I'm pretty sure that at some point during the episode it was said that the Romulan ship lacked warp capability. Even if Romulans had ships capable of warp 2 it would be difficult for them to hold sway over a star empire. Warp 2 is approximately 10 x lightspeed so a ship at warp 2 would take a year to travel 10 light years. There are only 11 stars within 10 light years of Earth, only 4 of them are known to have planets. It is said that the Neutral Zone is 130 light years from Earth so it would take a Romulan ship more than 13 years to reach Earth.

Oh, no. If V'Las was able to pass as Vulcan, how do we know T'Pol's father's parents bonded him to T'Les? That might explain T'Pol's occasional emotional behavour even before her introduction to the Trellium. Her mother always said T'Pol emotions were beneath the surface. T'Pol would've only known her father as a "Vulcan" as he supposedly died or was killed in an accident when she was young. This could have been an episode during the Romulan War if "Enterprise" been allowed to continue 3 more seasons. More likely though, T'Pol would've rejected-like Lt.Saavik-her Romulan background and only identified as Vulcan. I wonder if Lt. Saavik was aware of Cdr.T'Pol. Later, I believe and hope, both make it to the rank of Cpt.
