    ok heres the story to this post. My brother was at this show. He and his friends drove 8hrs through a snow storm to get to the jam from St. Louis. they didn't have tickets but talked to the road crew and they let them in. its classic. i remember being five years old and loving Caballo Diablo. I posted this for u Rick. You showed me what music is supposed to be.

      @@101Patriot in fact Toy was wounded. Taken out of combat and when he recovered they said he could go home and he said No and went back to his men and fought until his time was completed. No doubt he had PTSD. He died of a heart attack what should I say was in part due to his drug use.

    One of my all time favorite bands. KSHE95 baby! I used to play this, it's from their double live album. I had a Huge Kenwood amp, Techniques turntable, Pioneer CS99A's and a graphix in my bedroom. Totally rockin.

      Marantz 1060 amp. Kenwood tuner. Philips 212 electronics turntable. Advent bookshelves. And jbl's to match. Yeah, most of us old guys remember the 70s. Crammed in the dorm room with this cranked up three quarter volume. What a great time. Thanks for sharing this.

    Damn I miss the 70’s! I literally burned up Marshall Tucker Band 8 track tapes! Both the Caldwell brothers played with their thumbs instead of picks, it was amazing the sound Toy could squeeze out of that Les Paul!

    • @jackmomma7481
      @jackmomma7481 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Funny you mention how they both played using their thumbs, but especially Tommy. I watched an interview recently where Geddy Lee from RUSH talks about why thumb rests were originally placed at the bottom half of the pickguard, and not at the top above the E stringm which woukd seem like the more logical place for one...
      Hd said in the early days of bass guitar, bass players would commonly play using a style that incorporated the use of their thumb, rather thsn their fingers. They would then grab onto the thumb rest using their index, middle, and ring fingers for stability and leverage. Bridge systems were even equipped with foam pads that could be raised to mute each string, and helped facilitate that style of bass guitar playing, which I believe he said originated from the south consistent with tyat sort of rockabilly and country "twang" style...
      Perhaps, it's that exact style of playing is where Tommy's roots lie? It's an interesting theory and does make sense, anyways

      Aah 8-Tracks. The 70's. I had a MTB 8-Track die in the car I remember. Excessive heat was not good in the car for those tapes in the Summer. I think that one was respliced a few times. Remember you could do that to them?
      Well, the player ate the tape & I couldn't rescue it. I kept pulling strand after strand out. The window was half down & the wind just blew the 8-Track right out of my hand sending it down the road bouncing still with tape unraveling until the end. Such an inglorious ending for such a fine tape.

Such a great genre of music that only lives on because it has been passed down from sibling to sibling or parent to child. Good stuff. About anyone tied to Southern Rock would show up...the '24hrs At A Time" live version with Charlie on Fiddle is second to none...he made several guest appearances all over when Marshall Tucker played...it was very special...

    Toy and Tommy practically standing on top of one another, the way true brothers do, just raking it. Tommy couldn't have been more solid in backing his big brother and driving the band. It's always seemed to me that Tommy's and Timmy's deaths in 1980 killed Toy inside, and the band died then as well.

    I was there we drove thru a blizzard they closed the HYW after us in Kentucky, we get to the arena 3 am from St Louis and it said sold out! We were Bummed a friend and I took the other two to the hotel, we walked in the arena they were setting up the stage and after asking everyone if they new where we could get a ticket. we were told that the Lighting crew ha tickets 11 am so back we went until a guy stopped us and asked for our badge. We told him our story and he tells us if anyone can help us it Would be Charlie and he is over there so we walked up sold him we really came to see the concert he said well boys I have to but meet Tomye Crain at door 8 at 6pm and his wife would be there by 5:30 from mt Juliet and she will bring two more. Unreal from then on Charlie came Thru St Louis's venues at least ten times, he was signing albums million mile reflections and they were ending I told my girlfriend who became my wife I said just come on with me and I walked up to Charlie and asked him if he remembered he said how could I forget 4th row and the loudest voice he our the band had heard said to his business manager as he signed my wife's album while he told Fred set them up backstage every thing and we got big patches that stuck on your shirt passes for backstage. This concert was part of the Mississippi River festival outside I choose to sit in my second row center seats to enjoy the show, after the concert Charlie was backstage signing my hat and everything else put in front off him and all of the sudden he walks down these stairs and started to walk between two of his semi's so we follow and when we get behind the truck there are big metal Tubs full of Ice Cold Busch beer we stayed until 3 am what a party. From then on any time Charlie was in town he always took care of me once special guests of the CDB at six Flags. Another in Sedala MO state fair I only had one pass to get back stage but the three others I came with walked to the gate with me and it didn't look like anyone was watching the gate until we get in and this guy sitting in a wheel barrel says were are your passes I turn around he goes all right. there really weren't seats on the stage so I have a picture leaning on a marshal stack and Charlie turns around and I have a bottle of jack in my hand and he starts the slide part looking right at me to play whiskey. So many other great stories this man never forgot me what an honor, I always told him I was cemented as a CDB fan when I saw him open and play no place to go live blew me away after CDB, the Tucker Boys Toy blew me away, but to end the show kiel auditorium 1974 the last Act I had never seen live Ronnie and all his mules I didn't think anyone could top the two bands I had just seen until skynard blew me completely away they were so tight unreal I met Johnny with 38 special a friend of mine introduced me when they opened for ZZ Top I asked Johnny if there was any way I could meet Billy Gibbons and he said come on and we were in a room with Dusty Hill and Billy we somehow got into a small arguement because at the time I was living on the island of Kauai, and we were arguing about were the best weed was grown they said ZZ Top Island and I had to differ saying there is nothing like this man killer I have. So we lite up there's and after did one off mine and we talked for awhile when 38 special played I went back to my seat I was sitting with my dad and a couple of friends. No BS Billy came to mic and said that guy from HI you are 100% right my dad looks at me and says he isn't talking about you is he i said yeah. To many good times with southern rock.

    Had the privilege of meeting Toy and George as they were walking towards the stage one night and I hollered “George McCorkle the fastest rhythm guitar player alive!!” Stopped’m dead in their tracks and Toy said “he listens George” then he said “git on in here boy!” Thought I’d died and gone to heaven…this led to backstage passes of course, meeting the band, Tommy was like an instant friend and he grabbed Joe McConnell(road Mgr.) and had me put on the permanent guest list. “Where ever we play all you have to do is go to the back door give’m your name and what you need and you’re in Tommy told me…On stage there were 7 different sounds coming from each band member and those sounds met right slap in the middle of the stage! Saw Tucker at many venues and got to meet all the southern rockers…1974-1981 were some good years and great music…one of the best nights was NYE ‘76 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati…The Outlaws….Charlie Daniels Band….and…. The Marshall Tucker Band!
