- Members of the CDB and Lynyrd Skynyrd perform an instrumental of the Skynyrd anthem, "Free Bird" at Volunteer Jam V at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN on January 13, 1979. The Jam was the first time the surviving members of Skynyrd had performed together since before the tragic crash that claimed the lives of both pilots, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister (and Honkette) Cassie, roadie Dean Kilpatrick and lead singer, and dear friend of Charlie's, Ronnie Van Zant.

I was born in North Carolina in Wilmington....where Charlie was born...and spent most of my life in the state below it, South Carolina
And, yes, I live in New Zealand now....have for 24 years in September....came here building fiberglass boats in 1996

I saw this after my mom died in October of 2020 and I don't know why, but it reminds me of her everytime I hear it. As a man, I don't cry a lot, but this version of Freebird almost always brings me to tears or the brink of tears. Not afraid or ashamed to say it either

I seen The Rossington Collins Band in Orlado Florida at The Tangerine Bowl in 1980 first time they performed out live with Dale Krantz ! Johnny VanZant Band opened the show !

Makes me smile seeing Allen Collins jamming that solo! He made that beautiful sound! ❤ RIP to him, Gary and the rest that went on before them.
That was the last time the original line up took to the stage as skynyrd.......sad. ide give anything to hear Allen Collins rip that solo in person again. So so forgotten and unknown by today's generation. Everyone knows free bird but bet they couldnt tell ya who Allen is. To me he is among the guitar greats. The best skynyrd stuff is all their catalog that got no radio play. Allen rips it in needle and the spoon, his version of cross roads, wino........hell he kills it in all the songs.
RIP Allen, personally my favorite guitarist. Grateful that we are able to listen to the one of a kind type of talent he was. Whether he was rippin on his Firebird or Explorer you could tell Allen was playing by his unique style and tricks. There will never be another one like him. You could tell Clapton had influenced him, obviously with the Crossroads cover but the solos in Needle and the Spoon as well with the wah pedal. Glad for all the Skynyrd music we have but I can only imagine what more awesome music would’ve been created had the plane not went down. Street Survivors was the album that was gonna kickstart the prime of their career and if you didn’t know who LS was at the time, you sure were going to find out soon... RIP
Collins is such an under rated guitarist, his and rossington's styles both complimented each other well. Collins ripped a wah pedal in "wino" and in "the needle and the spoon" also......

Hell, they couldn't tell you who Billy Powell was either. I'm 36 and could give you history on both. That's thanks to my dad for raising me on Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker Band and the like

Yep. I went to V, VI and VII, This was the best of those three because of this performance. The next year was also pretty good, James Brown was the big surprise that year, pretty much the first major R&B artist performed at a Nashville festival. Biily Joel was a pretty big artist to show also.

Allen Collins Was always the guy up front giving 150 percent at every show. Both he and his long time friend Gary Rossington never failed to satisfy. Ed Kings song writing and guitar work were a great part of LS sound. The ex-marine Artimus Pyle was indeed the powerhouse Drummer Double Bass that made it all happen. Next to the original Allman Brothers Band, they were one of the hardest hitting live bands of their era that to me ended in 1977.
Don’t forget Steve Gaines, he was about to push Skynyrd into Superstar status, his songwriting, playing and singing gave the band another layer and was so good.

@@waynethera2712 I was just talking the other day about how cool it would have been, had Gaines and king been able to at least play together. Ironically, they were my favorite guitarists. They left us with the best thing possible. Their music.

Six of us traveled two days in a rented mobile home for this concert. We waited for hours in line to be able to stand in front of stage.There I was a young man of twenty-two totally in awe as I watched this performance..

I was extremely lucky to have seen them 2 days before the crash, in Hollywood Florida,October, 1977. Best concert ever, and I've seen many. It felt like someone ripped a big chunk of my soul, that fateful day the music died. Thanks to youtube, Skynyrd's music will live on and on!

It took a lot of will power to get up on that stage 10 yrs after the crash more than I could find these guys loved there musicians what a tribute to there friends and missing band members it fills me up to see Southern Rock band to hold there head up and go on its been a long time but I think u can still hear me in my opinion u r the best southern rock band ever and ever will b God bless u
Even as the instrumentals are lovingly played, I can still hear Ronnie's soulful voice singing those words as if he were still here.... I am so glad I was able to see the original lineup perform a number of times, the last one being on 8/6/77, just a few weeks before that terrible day. Rest in Peace all of you Freebirds everywhere, may we never forget you! \m/

Allen Collins was such a beast on guitar. My favorite LS is the Gimmie back my bullets album where it's just Rossington and Collins on guitars. The whole band was great but those two were what drove the musical side of things within the band.

You can tell Gary is Feeling it, he isnt playing to perform for the audience as much as he is self morning I believe. Watch his eyes. He is Feeling that guitar sound in his soul.
This still gives me chills. I was in Nashville listening to VJ-V on the radio live. We had no idea this was going to happen. We had some guys from Jacksonville with us and when LS came on, we ran outside and turned on all the radios in our cars and listened to Free Bird as loud as it would go. Once in a lifetime event.
I saw them with charlie Daniel's and Jay Giles in 1976 in Nashville ,what a show!!!!! I will soon be 66

MCA Records dropped the ball back in 1979 when they should have released this great live instrumental recording of "Freebird". This, by all accounts, should have been Skynyrd's last actual recording. If "Freebird Live (instrumental)" had been released as a single & marketed as "The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band & The Charlie Daniels Band", this single would've zoomed up the Billboard Hot 100! This should've been released as a two-sided single in '79! :-)
ChihuahuaboyDH For all the dough that Lynyrd Skynyrd put into MCA's coffers, MCA certainly hasn't done them any favors. MCA's lack of marketing and "push" on the 1987 album "Legend" is mind boggling. That should have been promoted to the hilt. Yet, I found out about it only through a small article in Rolling Stone. No ads, no radio airplay, no nothing.
MCA records was a shit show. Look up Steve Hoffman and Buddy Holly master tapes. Dude walked out with tapes and contracts and they covered it up.

What a incredible experience I have had this evening....I have never been so happy at this very moment in my life and I am a goner ....hook,line and sinker ...lol sooo cool and special to me.
If this don't make you cry nothing will. Stuff like this recognizes the ones that are no longer here. And you don't just stop. You carry on and pay tribute at the appropriate time. Channel their spirit through the performance and move it on and rock it baby!

Southern Rock lives on forever
I never got to see the original band...too young...but I did get to see this Volunteer Jam V performance on my little 13" black & white tv back in 1979 when PBS aired the full concert. It was a huge deal to me at the time as I was just becoming a fan and had recently picked up the guitar, inspired by all of the Skynyrd guitarists.
It was amazing to watch these guy who had survived the plane crash, back on stage playing again...and sad to think of those who didn't make it.
Seeing Allen play like that....chills...

This was the most kick-ass version of Freebird that I've ever heard, and I'm 38 and been a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan since I was probably 5. Wish I could've heard this before today. I loved Charlie Daniels growing up too and I was really hoping Charlie would've have a violin solo in there too. It was still there greatest rendition of Freebird I've ever heard, even without the lyrics
I remember this show. I watched this on my satellite dish. I had this 8 foot C-band dish on my parents house. It had been 2 years since the crash--- we didnt know what to expect. Chills when they did this song. This is right up there, but the atlanta fox shows from 76 were the best capturing skynyrd-- both nights.

Skynyrd helped form the lives of millions who knew the music and what it mean. Loved them from the first time and still love listening to the music today. The music is timeless and lives on through the existing members of the band today. No matter what the age, ask anyone you come across and all will agree some of the best songs ever written. Live on Lynyrd Skynyrd ! We love you and miss the ones who started this movement of Southern Rock.

All my friends from my teens and 20s are passing. But I have been blessed to see unbelievable music live (in person ) from the original LS lineup , CDB, The Outlaws , Molly Hatchet, Henry Paul, Blackfoot, Allman Brothers, and too many other southern rock legends. I am a blessed man!

I remember hearing Rossington Collins play this at the Fountain Casino in Aberdeen, NJ. They played it with a spotlight on an empty microphone center stage.
I remember seeing this years ago and have kept looking for it so thank you.
The most haunting version of this great song ever. You know every band remembers hearing this in Hell House and hearing Ronnie deliver it home. God I miss those days.

Cheers for that! What a wonderful surprise. Watching your videos make me feel like I'm back in the 1970s again and what a feeling that is. You only really appreciate these guys after they're gone. Had I been older at the time I would have understood how good musicians they really were.

This had to be so hard, and yet, so uplifting, and fulfilling for Allen, Gary, Art, Billy, and Leon to do, especially with Dean, Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie's deaths still fresh in their minds. It's sad knowing that most of the men in this video have joined Dean, Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie in the hereafter. Rest in peace, Allen, Billy, Leon, and Charlie.

Wow!! This video is great to see once again. I was lucky enough to have seen LS in 1975. And CDB a few times in the late 70’s. Those days in my youth were the greatest. I’m 68 now and still listen today. Thank you for posting this time piece.
The first concert I ever went to was skynard at the age of 14 in 1974. After that I saw any southern rock band that got near me in SC. Including Skynards last show in Greenville. No better groups than all of those from back then.

It's beautiful, exciting to see them on stage again, to hear Gary's voice, but it made me cry... 🤘🏻🦅
They were hurting more ways than one but I think playing live in front of people helped them.
Just looking at Gary you can tell that as he was playing that he was missing his band mates. When they finished I thought Gary was about to cry when he stated don't know what to say to the audience.
@@darracooper7937 me too. From what I have read, obviously they all took it hard but Ronnie, Gary, Allen were the original 3 along with Bob Burns & Larry Junstrom. Ronnie was like a father, a brother, mentor to them. Allen looked in physical pain at 1st, either that or was grimacing tryin to hold back the tears. They lived with the physical & emotiinal pain & survivors guilt, Gary still does.
I didn't see Leon play, had arm in a sling, I know he had severe nerve damage & held his bass almost vertical, only way he could play. Miss these guys so much!.
Gary just had another emergency heart surgery so wish him well.
The best performance of this song. Forget that some notes are off, or there are some timing issues here and there. The emotion that permeates this version is what makes it special. This should have been the end. Dignified.
