    This one was long requested, and it's finally here! I read lots of Dutch books this summer so I could recommend my favourites in translation. Have you picked up a Dutch book before? If there's anything else you'd like to know about Dutch reading culture, let me know and I'll talk about it in a future video!

    For you video on Dutch reading culture, I would love to know why it seems like everything is simply called a "Roman" and we do not really have categories as "romance" or "contemporary fiction".
    It can be frustrating sometimes!
    Love from a fellow Dutchie.

      Ha yes, that's a very good question! I feel like on my recent trip I saw some separate shelves that were 'literature' and the rest was just under 'other' in a small bookshop. Will investigate further!

    Yeah Dutch sci-fi is incredibly rare! I tried finding some for my Dutch literature list back in high school, and only managed to find “de wereld gaat aan vleit ten onder” by Max Dendermonde, which is not even really super sci-fi, but it was a really interesting (and quick) read, still the book that stuck with me most from that time!

    Already super hyped about the video on Dutch reading culture! I'd like to know if there are certain literaty traditions unique to or prevalent in the Netherlands, or why certain ones are underrepresented or seemingly missing. For instance, the Nordic countries seem to have this huge crime and thriller culture, and Britain and the US have the very concise writing form of essays; so I wonder if there is something comparable for the Dutch.

    🇺🇸 🇫🇷 I’ve recently learned the heritage of my family! On my mother’s side, my grandfather was Dutch & French and my grandmother Scottish. So I’ve been wanting to read literature from those cultures because I just love it! So excited to find this video!!!
    On my father’s side my grandmother was full Creek Nation Mvkoke (Native American Muskogee Indian) and my grandfather African (French from Ivory Coast).

    Great recommendations! I actually picked up The Penguin Book of Dutch Short Stories when I was on holiday in Amsterdam a few years back, I've read the first couple of stories and quite enjoyed them. I remember debating with myself about buying The Evenings as well but never did, and now I kinda regret it haha, I'll have to find it somewhere else because it definitely sounds like something I would like.
    Usually I read in English and Swedish, but it's mostly been English for the past 10 years to be honest.. I really want to read more in Swedish again. I'm also learning Korean so I look forward to when I'm good enough to read a whole book in the language.

    • @booksandquills
      @booksandquills  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So many readers gravitate towards English when they're young, so it's really interesting to see how/if those habits change again when you get a bit older and maybe want to explore your own country's literature a bit.

    • @smileifyouarebored
      @smileifyouarebored 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@booksandquills yes exactly. I think as a teenager I thought English was like the coolest thing ever so I read a lot in English to become more fluent, but now I feel like I'm almost losing my more advanced vocabulary in Swedish instead. And being in my late 20s I definitely want to hold onto my native language. But it feels like half of the books published in Swedish nowadays are crime or thrillers and I don't much like reading those..

    The Discovery of Heaven sounds super interesting! The way you describe it in the beginning reminds me of the film classic Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin), which is one of my favourite movies of all time...just one question; I noticed there was an earlier translated version by Paul Vincent (in 1997), and was wondering how the new version is different?
    I read in Mandarin (mother tongue), English, and now some French as well; would totally love more videos introducing Dutch literature! Thank you for these.

    Used to live in The Netherlands, so I try and read a Dutch book once a year - if I can get my hands on them. I like to re-read books in Dutch that I've already read in English, so that way when I'm confused or don't fully understand the vocabulary, I know I can keep reading and still follow along with the general plot. Done most of the Harry Potter books that way and enjoy learning the new character names in Dutch!

    I really loved this video and found it incredibly intresting. Though the idea of talking about Dutch literature without talking about any Flemish literature seems strange to me, as there are so many great books writen in Dutch written by Belgian authors. Though i understand that might have been hard to include since you where working with Letterenfonds. But despite of that this was an excellent list i have read many of these books in highschool an really appreciated them!

    Traditional Chinese and English🇭🇰🇬🇧it’s fascinating to see even in the Chinese book market, there are stylistic differences among Taiwanese, Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese authors. I also find it interesting that I tend opt for Chinese versions of books translated from Japanese since the meaning of characters’ names don’t get lost in translation that much as oppose to when it’s translated into English. Thanks for your video🎉❤

    I devoured everything by Thea Beckman when I was a kid, especially loved the futuristic novels of Kinderen van Moeder Aarde (children of mother earth)... Reading about a society run by women & their justice system etc changed my views on the world... Her historical novels are also incredible... Ik denk helaas dat je ze allemaal los zou moeten vinden (wat wel mogelijk zou zijn), want deze zijn volgens mij specifiek samengesteld voor deze Engelse Penguin editie. Maar na even zoeken kwam ik wel dit boek tegen: Nederland leest de mooiste korte verhalen (gekozen door A.L. Snijders). De beschrijving zegt 'van Hugo Claus tot Maartje Wortel, van Ischa Meijer tot Joost de Vries', dus misschien is dat een leuke om te proberen?

    The Netherlands represent! as a dutchie very interested in your video on Dutch reaing culture!
    I usually reads books in the original language when I can (Nederlands, Deutsch, English, Español... big wish: Francais). Come to think about it, so weird how I haven't read many of these classics.. I think indeed because teachers kind of ruined them for me in high school haha and I was very UK-oriënted when I was a teenager already ;) But now I am older most definitely appreciating Dutch lit more so this video came in the right moment!
    I would recommend Ellen Deckwitz for Dutch Poetry (and general recommend her as a person haha) and A Dutch author I LOVE is Adriaan van Dis
    Did you enjoy the discomfort of evening? I thought is was beautiful. but horrible... extremely clautrofobic. I would recommend the Dutch version, the authors choice of words is wonderful..
