Ahhh I'm so glad you have Sioned's Edition of the Mabinogion (You were very close with the pronunciation; mab-e-noh-gi-on)! It is absolutely the best edition out there. The Celtic Miscellany is also a very good edition. Over the nine waves is considered to be less academic and not as good in terms of truth to the folklore; I would recommend Gantz's Early Irish Myths and Sagas as a better intro to Irish mythology. If you want any more recs for Welsh/Irish mythology/folklore/pronunciation let me know; I taught Celtic Mythology at Queens University, Belfast, for 2 years and have a PhD in Welsh and Irish folklore (King Arthur and Fionn mac Cumhaill, respectively!).

You already have an excellent collection Ashleigh, build upon it. I'm going to recommend just two books. Firstly, 'The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt' by Richard H Wilkinson, published in 2003 by Thames And Hudson. Wilkinson has excellent Egyptological and academic credentials. The thing about Egyptian mythology is that, while there are many gods and goddesses, there are few monsters and no semi-divine heroes and, with a couple of notable exceptions, there is very little conflict between the gods. The Egyptian gods are, in the main, serene and dignified so this does not make for many mythic tales as such. Still, I think you'll find the book a valuable reference resource.
My second recommendation goes right back to the very beginning of recorded mythology. That is 'The Epic of Gilgamesh' - "Surpassing all other kings, heroic in stature, brave scion of Uruk, wild bull on the rampage, Gilgamesh the tall, magnificent and terrible..." This is a quote from the Penguin Classics edition. The story goes back 4,000 years and Gilgamesh has a lot in common with Greek heroes like Heracles and Odysseus. I've got the 2003 edition which is full of beautiful line illustrations taken from Mesopotamian art. Enjoy and have a lovely weekend !

OMG I loved this so so much and don't worry about not having read them all because girl...same. I cannot pinpoint what it is that keeps me from reading folklore/mythology but it is vaguely this fear of not 'getting' all of it and not recognizing the intertextuality if any. So I always feel like I have to do some pre-reading first. Of what? I have no idea. Sorry for the babble but your collection is glorious and now I have 156 books in my cart LMAO

I've read Le Morte d'Arthur. It's very thick but there's a lot of repetition from what I remember. Lots of knights getting of their horses for a duel, smiting each other to the ground. It was super interesting but not as compelling as I'd expected. I was glad that I didn't get the original medieval text, because the 'translated' version I read was already archaic enough at times. But definitely worth a read!

As someone who also collects books on mythology and collections of myths, legends etc., your collection is absolutely #goals. 😉😍
My own is currently mostly focused on Norse mythology - one of my favourite nonfiction books being a 600 pages beast about Loki's role in the myths which is based on the author's dissertation.
I find it interesting that you don't like to "hear the author's voice" when reading a retelling, because that's something I actually adore. I love books like Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology or Stephen Fry's Mythos exactly because you can see that these experienced writers took those myths and treated them as what they know best - fictional stories, yet without losing sight of their cultural and spiritual aspect. It's modern but respectful to the stories' origins. I think that is a great way to get new people interested & also I just find it lots of fun.
Sorry this comment is so long and rambly. 😆

    • @AFrolicThroughFiction
      @AFrolicThroughFiction  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you! Ahhh that’s so interesting 🙌🏻 I defo need to look more into Norse myth.
I think when it comes to hearing the author’s voice, it’s more a case of when they try to make things humorous. I have this problem with all books - if an author is trying to be funny, I often don’t like it 😂 and with fairytales etc I like how the bizarreness of the stories is just standard so drawing attention to how odd they are by making it funnier just misses the mark for me. Not always - I do like Stephen Fry’s Mythos (which is in a different area on my shelves for some reason, I seem to have categorised wrong 😂).

The Edith Hamilton book probably includes the Norse Myths because the author of the Prose Edda puts forward that the Norse Gods came from Troy. The theory is probably the author's invention but there is a lot of mixing of Greek, Roman, Celtic and Germanic gods in the Netherlands and other places. I've found that it's not always clear what is unique and what isn't - until I came across the Dutch Goddess Nehalennia and looked into the archelogy of her temples, I thought that there wasn't any connection at all, and it was just Snorri Sturluson's way of making the pagans appear stupid.

    These look so fun!
Also, I’ve been trying to find this book for years now but I can’t remember the title or the name of the author. But, I do remember some parts of the book:
-The cover of the book was like a blue sky with fairies flying around in the middle
-There was once scene where water pond/ lake fairies made you answer riddles to pass the lake
-There was a scene were you walked into a shy weeping fairy in an icy cave
-There was a scene in the dark, where the pond/ lake morphed into a face of person....
That’s really all I remember, also the book was more a chapter thick book, rather than a thin book
If anyone knows the name of the book or the author pls tell me, thank you 🙏🏻🤍🤍

Highly informative! For a broader perspective, you'd do well to read a similar book. "Galaxies United" by Olivia Whitestone

I can help you with ‘The Mabinogion’ if you want☺️ They’re a bit crazy but so are all fairytales tbh😂

There are only 3 Welsh legends that focus on King Arthur and they’re in the Mabinogion if you want a taste of the legend without having to read that massive book😂

I love the penguin classics edition of The Odyssey! I was so intimidated before I started reading this Epic but omfg I love it so much! I’m so glad I decided to pick it up☺️✨

@@welshreader There are actually 4 in the Mabinogion, (Peredur, Gereint, Owain, and Culhwch ac Olwen) And a good few poems from the Black Book of Carmarthen and elsewhere that add more to the Welsh Arthurian legend. There are 11 "Welsh" Arthurian tales in total, but some of these are Cambro-Latin (the Saints' lives' presentation of Arthur are hilarious!). But I must admit, the 3 romances from the Mabinogion (Peredur, Owain, Gereint) are perhaps the best known (thanks Chretien de Troyes! 😂)

You need some expansion in the slavic myths and legends for sure. And please remember that the russian are only one of many completely different directions. You can find a complete set of mythology even in the borders of one country. Very diverse and not well known!

I know, this is only the beginnings of what I hope will be a much bigger collection. By no means do I think what I have is the extent of it all
