Hello Paola, I laughed out loud when you talked about the challenge of working in a bookshop. I had a job doing that in our tiny country town when I had my first child, 23 years ago. The owner wanted Saturdays off and I was her best customer so I got offered a job. Yes, you guessed it. I basically spent my small wages on books, and then some. One thing occurred when I worked there. A local woman walked in and browsed for a while and then said to me "Why would anyone pay $12 for a children's book?" Oh, my heart broke right there and I realised why I had trouble fitting in to the local Mum's Group. They didn't value books, reading and the need to read to their children. I wanted to share with you that since raising my toddler granddaughter, I have decided to go back to uni. Next year I start a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship, as my passion for literature and for literacy in children has not diminished. Your bookstore was swoon worthy. Hugs from country Australia.
Knowing people like you and Paola still exist out there despite all the bad I see everywhere is really comforting and gives me hope for humanity. Wish you all the best❤
@@bianka94825 thank you, that is very kind. I think that everyone needs more love, compassion and everyday beauty in their lives. I try hard to do that at home but also with anyone I come into contact with. It is the least I can do as I have many good things in my life and a smile is free. Hugs from me in Australia.
You're definitely living the life I idealize everyday before sleeping. I mean, living in a cottage, work with art and books, away of all the drama and stress of the city? Never stop with this videos.
@@Archonsx Most cities are inevitably filled with the overwhelming hustle and bustle of everyday life commonly due to the “hustle”/“go-getter” mentality which is typically not an ideal environment for those who want to live simpler, quieter lives. Not to mention higher crime rates, higher cost of living, lower employment rates, noise pollution, light pollution, lack of nature, etc. that cities usually have. The city can definitely be stressful and exhausting for a myriad of reasons.
@@kurlykpopfan8111 I agree with most of what you said except employment rate. There are far more job opportunities and employment in the city. It’s a huge part of why people are willing to tolerate the city, an opportunity for work. Almost all over the U.S, places outside of cities are rampant with unemployment and desperation.
This video reminded me of a quote by C.S. Lewis... "When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." As an avid children's book reader, your message really resonated with me. As always, thank you for sharing and for inspiring us ❤️
A great quote! And another favorite of mine from the incredible children’s author Philip Pullman, “There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book.”
I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.
@@HomeHunter-in-Moscow You are indeed very fortunate! Here, in Huntington Beach, Orange County, Southern California, there is a very small book shop that caters only to Mystery fans, and will be closing their doors in less than a year. Other than that, the only option is a Barnes & Noble (yuck!). There used to be 4 used book stores in HB alone, now there's basically nothing. So sad. Up in the greater LA area, which has a much higher population (and fewer hillbillies!), there are still some very nice stores. But overall, the physical, handheld book is going the way of the dinosaur.
@@bmschmitzer , I feel sad about it! I love the real books so much! The smell of the pages! The ability to turn pages 😊 Electronic or audio books can’t compare to this 😊 As long as we keep buying books, they will be published - I hope!
@@bmschmitzer The Last Bookstore In DTLA...if it is still there, an amazing place. I would lose track of time and get back to work late after lunch :D Worth a trip into the pit of despair. I would ride the Metrolink (grew up in OC, retired after working my last 7 years in LA)
Last year I opened a small secondhand bookshop. It went well but I need to prioritise my college so I abandon it. I plan to open it up again this year, and watching this video makes me sure maybe this is the best step
Hello! 😔 Sorry if there are any audio issues, my mic is being finicky today. Anyway, I hope you are doing well. I wanted to share some fun highlights from my week as well as some books I enjoy! Wishing you the very best. (all links in description bar, as well as Libro,fm link if you are an audiobook reader). Have a lovely day!
Dear Paola, I share your palpable love for books. As soon as I could read, I devoured tons of books on fairies, wizards, and fairy tales of all kinds. Last week I saw a film about the life of Beatrix Potter, whose books you love too. I myself live in Berlin, a noisy and completely overcrowded city in Germany. As soon as I watch your videos, I can leave my reality for at least a few minutes and live the life through you that I so much want ... You carry a great light in you and touch so many people with it. God bless you and your little family from the bottom of my heart - best regards from Germany from Alexandra 🥰
I think your interests, passions, & personality are absolutely perfect for this job, along with being someone who, without even trying, is very difficult to maybe impossible to say no to. People are going to want to buy SOMETHING there just because of you - & ownership will notice. If there's any way they can swing it, I expect you'll be kept on after the holidays.
This talk about children's books hit me in a way I didn't expect. It actually brought tears to my eyes. The world right now is so dark & you are like a light giving us permission to dig out children's literature that is filled with hope. I feel inspired after listening to you to get some of these titles for myself and to share as read aloud for my kids. Thank you. I appreciate your videos so much.❤️
I loved hearing about the books you recommended. Life always seems brighter and our struggles smaller when you read children's books. I would definitely like to be paid in books!
I love reading to my kids for this reason! It’s all about being kind to our inner child. Chances are we have carried more resilience from childhood than we are aware of.
I couldn't agree more, too! Sending so much love, this world is healing. I pray we are headed into much brighter times.. I believe we are. Hang in there
I've daydreamed about working in a bookshop. :) Instead, as a homemaker and homeschool mama, I'm amassing our own home library, with plans for future floor-to-ceiling bookcases. And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)
Homeschooling Mama, you are wonderful! You are creating such special emotional connections for your children to books, reading and to reading with you. This will make a real difference in their lives and you gave them that gift. My children are grown adults now but they have seen me reading some of their favourites to our toddler granddaughter and they always stop, sit and listen. I agree that many of those kid purchases are for my heart too. Bless you and what you do for your family each day.
I would love to read a book about you ✨ This would be one of the most magical, earthly, spiritual, emotional, sacred novel. Thank you for existing and sharing your world. Lots of love 🤍🕊️
What an extremely lovely video. I sat here with pen in hand writing down the books you recommended. My heart began to race with anticipation. I didn’t want to miss the name, Title, or Author. At almost 66 years old, my mind and imagination take me right back to my early childhood, learning to read and spending countless hours sitting at a small table in our public library (which we lived very close to). My neighbor was librarian so my parents felt I was safe to spend hour after hour there and when I’d been gone past time to check in, they knew exactly where I’d be. 😊. I learned so many valuable lessons by my love for reading, made friends with so many trusted animals and friends, and could travel anywhere through the opportunity afforded to me through books. ❤️. My book shelves are loaded with books that I still love to read over and again. Thank you again for your delightful presence in this world. God bless you sweet friend! Keep reading and please keep sharing. 😊❤️😊
This was such a sweet memory you shared! I also spent loads of time at the library growing up. I credit my time spent reading nonfiction books about various subjects as my true education (compared to my lackluster experience with school). Books can show you the world and teach you to empathize 📖
"We have intrinsic value". I felt that. I often feel so useless, as if I'm just drifting and existing. Hearing you say that I have value, brings me immense comfort.
As a librarian so much of what you said resonated. I too find so much beauty and hope in children's books especially picture books. You are a beautiful story teller and I can definitely see you as a children's librarian if that is something you wish to pursue.
I used to work in a bookstore when I was in high school. I also volunteered at the library in middle school. I loved both. I plan to do it again as I get closer to “retirement” as I loved it so.
I'm so glad you could find a job that suits you so well. I used to work as a bookseller, about 10 years ago, in a small bookshop filled with wooden shelves and tea boxes, and enjoyed it so much. I wish you the best there ❤ PS : I LOVED Hilda ! Such a beautiful and whimsical story, not to mention the absolute wonderful drawings !
Finally someone who feels the same about stories written for children. I love love LOVE watching children's series and shows because they convey so much meaning, truth and beauty in a way that is easily accessable, without much drama. Maybe I should take your advice and not only watch stuff "made for children" but also read children's books. Thank you for this video and, in fact, all of your videos. I really enjoy watching them :)
Indeed. If you haven't seen it yet, I really recommend Hilda on Netflix. It is a precious series. As for books, I don't know many but revisiting old shows or movies in book form might be rewarding? Edit: See what happens when you comment before a video ends lmao. Going back to my hidey hole now.
I'm 57 years old and I still enjoy reading books from my childhood and teen years. I find them comforting and they take me back to a less stressful time in my life.
I agree, I love a good children's book!♡♡♡ I'm a new author and illustrator of a children's book called The Magic Hot Air Balloon by Breanna Fabian . (Traveling Adventures At The Pop of a Bubble) It's about a little girl who travels in a magic hot air balloon in her dreams everynight, but Instead of hot air the balloon is filled with bubbles! Every night she'll choose a bubble, with a scene inside, to pop and travel to that magical world! It will definitely be a series! If anyone is interested you can get it online today! ♡♡♡~Breanna
I love how beautiful the copies of the classic books are at your store. I much prefer a classic books with an elegant cover because it just makes it feel more authentic
This is by far the most beautiful video I have seen in a while. You are living the dream. Small town living and working in a small bookshop, I love it. As a young writer and historian, this is one of my future goals. PS: 'I could just be paid in books!' I FELT THAT 😭♥️
I remember in high school French class, our teacher had us read children’s books to get us familiar with reading French in a story rather than just a series of nouns and verbs to conjugate in class. There is one I have looked for ever since. It’s called “Pearlette, Goute d’Eau”. It’s the story of a drop of water and the illustrations were beautiful. The little drop of water had adventures. She was carried in a stream, evaporated into the clouds, and returned as rain. Lovely. I took that class fifty years ago but the book is still in my memory.
My ability to dream has waned over the last few years. As a pastor, writing and story-telling are two important aspects of my job and I’ve been struggling. As you were talking about reading children’s literature, I felt an excitement about reading that I’ve been missing. I read a lot as a child and my dreamland was vivid. The stories in children’s books are wonderful tools in helping people understand scriptural truths in a different way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video and the suggestions. I’m heading to the bookstore later and will be spending time in the children’s section instead of the religion section. Your videos are such a gift. ❤️
As a young only child I needed a way to escape and be comfortable so I turned to reading. When I was old enough I was able to use the library which was so exciting! Paola I am so enjoying watching you and Rohan as your lives evolve in that magical area where you live. It was so much fun seeing you all (except Liana) when I was visiting your Grandmother. You will be a Beautiful Bride!❤
I’m 65 and always loved beautifully illustrated children’s books. Now I’ll be searching for some you mentioned. I still think you should write and illustrate your own children’s books. I believe it would be worthwhile, artistically, spiritually, and a comforting achievement!!!😘❤️🙏🏻
I'm the same age and agree that Paola should do this! She is a natural! She would write the most wonderful, magical stories - for kids young and old (like us)! I used to do taxes for a friend who was an author - royalties are like the gift that keeps on giving!
Oh yes, I agree Ann. With the drawings I saw Paola do and her knowledge of books...seems like it would be a good challenge and quite rewarding. I would purchase it, just saying.
Definitely not too rambley. I love it when you take the time to chat about what you'd learned, your experiences, and of course, book recommendations. Thank you for gracing us with your presence each week.
Bunnicula!! I read those to my sons when they were little boys! They loved Bunnicula! Now those little boys are in their forties…lol. Every night I read to them before bed. I spent at least forty five minutes reading to them and singing songs to them. I used to change the names in the books to their names sometimes and they suddenly became more involved in the story…lol. I also made stories up right off the cuff that involved them. I called one of those stories Johnny and the chicken, and I made up all kinds of shenanigans for them. Reading is and always will be my favourite thing. Peace and love to you. 🙃
This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m in Michigan and with the recent school shooting events, I needed something to ease the pain. As a Literature major, I’m always looking to expand my book list. And I love Neil’s books ❤️
Kelli Bauer I am so sorry what has happened in Michigan my prayers for all of you to try and heal & come thru what has happened try to have a lovely day
When you started to open your books I could feel the magic of them and picture myself as a child, spending hours in the evening reading my comforting stories. I think it's wonderful that you give your time to this little bookshop
You have such lovely peaceful energy, thanks for the book recommendations. Your bookstore looks like such a great place to visit. I also like children's books, I wish there were more adult books that kept the magic. x
Hi Paola, in my thirties, I worked at a bookstore called Yesterday’s Books, featuring out of print and used books. It was a wonderful job. Your shop is warm and lovely, enjoy it!
You are such an inspiration! As a new TH-camr, you really motivate me to continue to upload videos on my channel. Your personality is so relaxing and positive. Thanks for being you!
*"who you are isn't defined by your job or achievements."* Wonderful words of wisdom! What a lovely wholesome life you have built ❤ Wishing you all the best this holiday season and looking forward to seeing more Wintry content 😍❄
Language incorporates beliefs and attitudes. Therefore in the English speaking language, you _are_ sadly what you do, where you live, your age and kinship. Shoe maker, Earl of Kent, I am 57 and I am Tom's son. Besides, since we thousands of hours to work yearly, it bc the very center and purpose of life - to the exclusion of parenting, hobbies, developing relationships, cultivating our spirituality and deepening wisdom. And w/o a career, we hesitate to answer the question: What do you do? I don't have friends b/c I now live on disability and meeting new people involves giving up that miserable fact. I've come to terms with almost every unpleasantness, including eventual death, but _not_ that of forfeiting a career.
Growing up Books and music were my life. They saved me from reoccurring traumatic events in an alcoholic home. I just got done re-reading “Mandy” by Julie Andrews… I also just finished the “Serafina” series of well written books by a local author and found them real page turners. We each have to find what fills us, whether anyone else understands it or not. I recently married after 16 years of being alone on purpose to work through some damage done in my childhood. I found myself interesting and lovable despite what I was told repetitively growing up, Im quite amazing. So are you. Im so proud of you for doing what brings you joy and enhances your life. Bravo! You are such a lovely person and I relate to your peaceful spirit.
Thank you so much for your comment. It really encouraged me! I’ve been single for a long time and have recently been thinking there’s something wrong with me because I have been focusing on healing from trauma. I thought it was my lot to be alone… thank you! Sorry it’s a little random, but it’s a real encouragement ! Thank you! Xx
When you find a special book it is magical. There is nothing like curling up on a comfy chair and reading. You can be transported within the pages. Walking into a bookstore is such a cozy feeling. I already purchased 2 of the books you mentioned and can not wait to start reading. Thank you for sharing. Love your videos.
Hello Paola: I suspect that your presence in the store will be a draw for customers. The serene joy of being in a bookstore is multifaceted, and is as much about being surrounded by books, as it is just being among other book lovers...as they seem to always be genuinely lovely people. Thank you again for the personal touch at the end of your video where you speak directly to your viewers. Always my favorite part. All the best to you!👍👍❤❤
Hearing of adults reticent to read books written for young minds, brings to mind 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I believe every adult will benefit from internalizing the deep truths in such a seemingly simple story.
I'm currently reading A Christmas Carol by Dickens. Generally I start it the day after Thanksgiving and it just makes Christmas time so special to me. Thank you for your video. Our oldest is a bookseller and he feels very similar to the way that you do about books.
Patti! I do the same but on 1 December as I am Australian and don't do Thanksgiving. I read it every year. I also have some Elizabeth Goudge Christmas tales that I read and also kid's books too. It is a lovely tradition.
Thank you very much for sharing the books that you enjoy. I’m 54, and I still love reading children’s books. I sometimes feel guilty, but your passion about whimsical books reminds me that it’s good to be “young at heart.’ Funny, you mentioned about Bunnicula. My daughter used to love reading those books. Of course, it’s not just children’s books that you read… Very interesting facts about the turtles being able to hibernate under the frigid water for 4 months.
You are my kind of person. It is rare to find someone like me. I used to just read self help books, which I still enjoy, but I had wondered if I was missing out on the novels. My husband said I was. He is an avid reader and author or two books, volume one and two. He has several others he is working on. So your video has enlightened me and helps me. I wrote a list of all those books you mentioned and yes I know what you mean about the whimsical and wholesomeness you get from children's books. I like those too.
I have always had a special fondness for childrensbooks and when I got old enough to travel (mostly study trips with school) I would bring home local to the country I was visiting childrens books (past tense because right now there's hardly any traveling for obvious reasons). I would go into a regular bookstore and ask the clerk what book every child from that particular country would know was and get that (or those). I can't tell you the warmth every clerk beams with and they have NO doubt in their body what book(s) to reach for. I've gotten to know so many wonderful stories and illustrations from so many places this was. Best. Souvenir. Ever
I read Bunnicula as an elementary school kid (or maybe it was one that my teacher read aloud to us?), and I LOVED it. It has stuck with me all these years because of what a clever story it is.
I only shop children’s book. That sense of innocence and believing in the good of people is what keeps me positive in this crazy world that we currently line in. And at 50+ your videos are inspiring in keeping hope for a better world for our next generation in making this world a better place to live. I look forward to your next video. ❤️
You are hands down one of the more inspirational and sweet and lovely people here. Gentle, with a huge heart. I so enjoy watching and listening to you.
You inspired me to start reading Children’s books again! The Velveteen Rabbit is my first purchase! I bought it thrifted and it’s beautiful and it made me cry! I will see it on my bookshelf and forever associate it with finding your world through your channel. Thank you.
Not too rambling at all! I am a second grade teacher turned college instructor, turned homeschooling Mom and have be exposed to much more children’s literature than I would have been otherwise as a result of my work. I found your insight into the value of children’s books so refreshing and wholeheartedly agree. Thank you. You may already be familiar with these, but you might enjoy The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo and also The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Peterson at a songwriters conference and was very pleased to read his books afterwards. They are humorous, touching, deeper than one would give credit for at first glance, and overall enjoyable to read. God bless! Abi
My favorite part of the day is reading my son a bedtime story or a few. He looks forward to it and it warms my heart. Our favorite right now is Violet the Pilot. Thank you for sharing!
Paola, first I want to tell you how beautiful this video and story is. I have been following you since day 1 and your channel gets better each week. Second, as a 62 year old first time grandmother, I am saving your recommendations to buy and read to my granddaughter someday. Lastly, I'd like to say that your kind and beautiful soul has translated seamlessly into your art, stories and channel. Keep following your dreams and keep up the great work!
This is so calming and inspiring. My ultimate dream - watching your videos helps my slowly gathering the courage to build the life I want. Thank you ❤️
Your bookstore is charming! I would love to spend some time there among the books. When I was in college, I had a work study job in the college library and I loved it! To be surrounded by books was like being surrounded by flowers. I couldn't pick just one or two. Lucky for me, I could borrow them and not buy them. I would enjoy some episodes devoted to books and reading. You are a creative spirit and I would love to hear your thoughts on books, art, music, and how they enrich and influence your life.
We’ve been to your bookstore! We love small shops and stop in whenever we come across them. We were on a winter vacation. My son was 3 at the time and loved the children’s section. He picked out a train that was very special to him. I could’ve browsed for hours but it was close to closing. It’s a lovely shop!
today has been a really anxious day for me. I find out about college acceptance and it feels like the culmination of much of the past 6 year's stress. as I sit here waiting for my sister to return so that I can open the letter, I watched this video. I now find myself fulfilled with a warm energy that feels so healing. I know that regardless of what the college says, I have myself and I love that being. you are so kind. I love you, beautiful soul.
I just started working again ( stay-at-home /homeschool mom here) and even though I am working as a hostess again ( like I did when I was a teen 😳) for a local restaurant. I just wanted something for the weekend to get me out and to help with the ever rising bills. At first I felt silly as a 35 year old woman who went to college and is also a licensed massage therapist, going back to my first real job but I realized when I was there that it is so rewarding working for a family establishment. Most of my working experience has been with corporations and even as a hostess I feel like I have real value. I was just gonna do it until I could get my massage license for the new state I moved, but I actual feel pretty rewarded when I close up the restaurant at night. I think we think of age and labels so much and even though I hate it, I am horribly guilty and feel the need to constantly call myself out on those thoughts. We are not what we do, but how we do it. I have most of my working experience at a restaurant and even though my work experience has grown so much beyond my restaurant skills, I think all of the other jobs I have had, and they have actually helped me improve the skills I already had. Life is a strange journey. You never know where it will take you. 💜
"We are not what we do but how we do it", profound. At 63 yrs, I just love spending time as a volunteer within our small community, planting and landscaping. Sowing seeds for future generations. Blessings.
What a lovely bookshop. And to see the lights in the evening of all the shops looks so beautiful. Book lists are always welcome in my eyes! So thank you for your recommendations. PS I love Neil Gaiman’s books. I tend to revisit them. 🤍 Also I was just talking to a friend about how books would be so much more magical if they had some illustrations in them. As adults we enjoy art as well so I wish more would include them. But for now I appreciate children’s books as well as graphic novels sprinkled in to my reading lists :)
What a beautiful and delightful human being in what seems to be a complicated sad world. Its people like you that bring the light back from the darkness. Then again you would prob just say how magical the darkness is because you see the best in everything x
I absolutely love this blog. I am and always have been a real bookworm and am envious of your job as a bookseller. I have worked in libraries in the past and loved it. A book I’m reading at the moment, from the library, ordered as it’s new out is called ‘Midnight in Everwood’ by M. A. Kuzniar apparently a reimagining of The Nutcracker, it too goes into another world. I don’t usually read these types of books regularly but am enjoying it. The descriptions of sweets etc. is mouthwatering. Thank you again for this blog, my reading list is endless and I can’t go into a bookshop or library without coming out with armfuls of books. xx
Aaaah, now my christmas wish list is exploding and I need a loooong holiday in order to dive into all those wonderful worlds you shared with us. Thank you for opening the portals! ✨
I love that you spoke about reading children's books as adults. I have started reading more again over the last year or so and I have been reading through the "Little House" books. I looooved the books when I was younger and I"m so enjoying re-visiting them. I'm also wanting to read the Anne of Green Gables books.
Oh. @Healing Waters, those Little House books and Anne books are still on my shelf from my childhood. I actually read Jane of Lantern Hill this week - I loved it all over again. There is something magic in them that calls to us, no matter what our age. Enjoy!
I grew up with a love for books. My family encouraged reading. The weekly newspaper was a staple in our home. By age 7 I could read most of it. I read the Bible, and Children’s books to my unborn children. Both love to read and have passed the Love to theirs children and grandchildren. It warms my heart. I love your videos. Keep them coming.
Thanks so much for sharing all of this Paola! I'm so inspired and would love to one day own a little bookshop where people can come and nose around or drink a warm cup of tea or coffee, whilst soaking up all the wonderful stories written in the books! I'm nearly 50...so it may be a little late in life to have this dream, but who knows right? Miracles can happen as we all know.... As a little girl, I used to read in bed with my little flashlight guiding me through the pages of Nancy Drew's, Enid Blytons' and Roald Dahls' adventures. I remember being happiest in those days and I've noticed that since I've finally started reading again my life (especially in those moments) is full of joy and enjoyment again. What pleasure it brings! It feeds my soul and nourishes my fantasy in ways I had forgotten possible. I have been a quiet follower of your vlogs since the start and I admire your courage, vulnerability and the wisdom you share being so young still. I especially loved this vlog, because it came out in the exact week that I had thought about opening up a bookshop. Please keep sharing books with us in the future, I'd be ever so grateful! From one half latina to another, quidate Paola, y mochas gracias por ser quien eres. Sending you heaps of best wishes all the way from Belgium. X Michele
Hi there, I am a country Australia soon to be Librarian and I LOVE Hannah Coulter and also A Shepherd's Life. I will try your other recommendations as we obviously have the same taste. Did you see in the video that Paola put a book about a fox on the shelf. I am getting that for Christmas and cannot wait. I think it is along the lines of H is for Hawk.
Paola, as a Puerto Rican trying to connect with my roots, I can’t tell you just how much it means to me that you’re recommending taíno stories and myths. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding sources on the taínos just in general because there isn’t a lot out there. Thank you so so much for spreading this information❤️
Thank you for the book recommendations, I'm a book lover...to me they are like mini time machines that sweep you off to a new place, a new adventure ...I love the smell of books the feel...the anticipation that happens to turn the page....the coziness a book gives me. I always have my nose in one, carry one with me and can be found in a coffee shop, the pier, the patio lost in a story...each time I put down a book..I can't wait to pick it up again. When I was a child I always wanted a book store...used books , loved by others ...sadly I'm 55 now and that dream wasn't meant to be.
The "10,000 Doors of January" is a phenomenal book, one of the best I've ever read! It's dense, so take your time with it. I had to take a few breaks from it because parts are intense (if you are sensitive). But all ends well. 😊 Love the book recommendations! Please do more.
This is perfect timing for me.. I'm 42 yrs old, I have been in the skincare/dermatology industry for so long & I feel like my soul is calling me to follow several passions in my life that I believe will not only fulfill my life's purpose but also generate several sources of new income... thank you so much for this inspiring heartfelt video ...🧘♀️💫💖
I absolutely LOVE children's books but I don't usually bring them up when recommending books to friends not sure how others will recieve them. I like that you made a point that they spark hope and I think that's why I'm drawn to them. If you have not read 'The Land of Elyon' series yet i highly recommend!
Working in a book shop cannot be someone's dream job.....but being a worker in a bookshop is such a blessing⭐. Once i was went for to get some books for our book fair...so i was waited in the book shop for my teacher to arrive and conform the books....so i just read 3- 4 books and saw lot of interesting books that i never seen before.....the time goes i went sleep beside the book shelf......tht felt like that i'm the closest friend of all these books...tht feeling is such an amazing thing that popped in my heart .the fact is that i was not mad about my teacher arrived lately😂.bcz i enjoyed being in that bookshop. And that's the day i realized that how happy i am when i was around the books💓
Still a great tradition in my house to give a book in the author of their chose. Wonderful to give ways to support local shops that are so needed in the economy. 💛
When we were moving and had to go through 23 years of household belongings, the thing I struggled most with, was getting rid of the books I read to my now grown children. I had an everyday collection of treasured reads and so many memories attached and a Christmas collection. Needless to say, I kept most in the hopes of reading to grandchildren some day but books become so special in our hearts and minds unlike other belongings. So enjoyed your video today, I will look up some of your suggestions for reading over the holidays.
Hello Paola, while recovering from surgery I discovered your delightful, enchanting channel. With this offering I jotted down most titles for purchase. Sharing some with my two daughters. Although I am 75 I still enjoy children’s books. I raised my three children reading to them from the cradle, doing it for hours impersonating all the characters with their own voices. I was a story telling mom in grade school. Writing children’s books is the hallmark of a truly great author. One has to be really good at their craft to hold a child’s attention. Thank you for your wonderful channel teaching us to slow down and pay attention to the really important things like unicorns and fairy dust. Fondly, Birgitt
I learned to read with my father when I was 4 years old. My parents were wonderful and would take me often to the bookstore and encouraged me to read. I am 67 ,books have always been great companions. I was never bored or lonely. Last year in August I suffered a concussion and have been dealing with post concussion syndrome. Sadly, reading books and doing puzzles have not been in my life these past few months as I fall asleep as soon as I attempt to do either. I have just started doing puzzles , 15 minutes at a time. I had a therapy appointment today and I was asked to start reading 15 minutes 3 times a day. Your video had the perfect therapy reading. I will start with children’s books! Not an e books but a physical book. I am allowed 15 minutes of tablet time twice a day now and I have enjoyed watching your channel. Thank you so much, your videos are very calming and soothing.
I love that you read children's books. You're absolutely right that they have value when we become adults. I'll go through your recommendations tonight and see what speaks to me :)
I adore children's books, and couldn't help wondering if you've ever seen/read The Lost Words, written by Robert McFarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris. It's one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and if you haven't read it I think you would love it too! I never ever comment on your videos but watch every one and they give me so much peace and comfort. Thank you for making this channel. 💖
I love how honest you are in your videos - you are so open and calm about your life experiences. You really show how it's possible to work full time and also balance a slower, more reflective life in a rural area - it's possible! Your home looks idyllic; I love your peaceful personality and perspective on life. :)
There’s just something about your channel that feels so safe and cozy. For the past few months I haven’t had any motivation to read but this video just reignited my passion for literature and books. Also this kind of makes me wanna open a small book shop of my own someday or maybe even be a writer I don’t even know but this video just made me fall in love with books all over again and it’s all thanks to you, thank you
David Haskell's book, The Forest Unseen is a must-read for anyone loving nature. He intertwines science, nature, and prose in a beautiful writing style.
We have very similar taste in books! I recently learned that there is a name for this genre: magical realism. If you Google that term, you'll find lots of great suggestions. I'm currently reading Emily Martin's "Snow & Rose" and what a lovely book it is! I just adore her work. If you like "The Hidden Life of Trees," you would probably like "Braiding Sweetgrass." It was the most beautiful book I read all year. Highly recommended!! As a fellow bibliophile, I feel like I could chat about books forever! 😂 I will never tire of book content. And I enjoy these new videos where you talk to the camera. Makes it feel like a chat with a friend. ❤️
Loved hearing about your lovely book store...I grew up loving the smell of books in libraries and shops! I taught elementary school for nearly 40 years and still have former students tell me about a favorite book I read to them. ...so many wonderful authors with such voice. I was listening and checking out those you listed that I've never heard of...now my Amazon cart has more in it!
Besos
I still love children's books, it might be because I taught 1st and 2nd grade for almost 30 years. You brought me into another way of rereading I never saw before, thank you. I have tubs of books in my garage and i retired 3 years ago but i can't seem to let them go(even to my grandchildren, haha). I so much love watching your videos, you are a lovely person.
What a perfect job 💚 I can picture you just surrounded by books in a beautiful setting; with your calm demeanor anyone that goes in the shop whether they buy a book will feel blessed💚 As a PS I also am collecting the complete works of Jane Austen, I have one more book to go👍🏻 I am very excited!
Thank you for sharing this lovely video with us! I find that I am very drawn to your spirit and your stories. I also worked in a preschool and discovered a new found appreciation and enjoyment from children's books. I have learned so many insightful things from children's books and I just love their simplified stories!!! I have been spending a lot of time reading YA and children's fantasy novels recently as well. I find it very comforting that we have that in common. It is not often that I find someone who is so passionate about imagination, folk lore, fairy tales, and make believe. Thank you for sharing!
The timing of this video being uploaded is so serendipitous. I’ve been feeling very stuck and trapped by my job. I work a desk job, thankfully from home, but it’s extremely stressful and I very much dislike it. However, it does cover my basic needs very well, so I’ve been trying to be thankful for it. Hearing you say that we aren’t defined by our jobs really helped. You also made me very nostalgic for when I was a bookseller. It can be such a magical job. Thank you for sharing your life with us, and thank you for inspiring me every single time I watch one of your videos. 💖
You have such a glow when talking about your favorite books. I feel the same...I wouldn't want to think of a world without books. I adore children's literature, too. I loved it as a child, but rediscovered it and gained an even greater love for it in a college children's literature class. Some of my favorites include The Celery Stalks at Midnight, A Wrinkle in Time, Harriet the Spy, and so many more. Neil Gaiman's books came to my attention a little later. I've never read one that I didn't love. It's especially fun to listen to one of his audio recordings. I also read a lot of middle grade and YA books. They are generally upbeat and so well-written. Great video! I love your little bookshop. I could lose myself in there.
I haven’t been a huge reader as an adult so after watching this video I felt sparked to get into reading again. I read the Snow Child, thanks for recommending. So, so beautiful. I cried so much at the end. Even throughout the day tears kept coming. Your mention of connecting to another world is just right. She was the personification of the wild, of the mountains. Of the place in me that is still wild, untainted, of pure spirit. When she left, it just hit home at that core wound. The fall from grace, I suppose. The part of me that has lost touch with my inner snow child. Anyway, thank you. I truly love you.
What a cool video. I love that you love your job so much. Years ago, I used to work in a book store, and I loved it, but it just didn't pay the bills unfortunately. You have a great speaking voice too; you should narrate books.
How wonderful! Congrats and good luck. Great idea!
@@janinafisher101 what a nice thing for you to say. Thank you.
Lovely comment, Catherine.💜🌟💜
Agreed! I wish to rewrite my life to be like this.
@@chea331 you can!
what stress? maybe you’re just living in a 3rd world country, most big cities i’ve lived in have been the perfect places to grow old in
@@Archonsx Most cities are inevitably filled with the overwhelming hustle and bustle of everyday life commonly due to the “hustle”/“go-getter” mentality which is typically not an ideal environment for those who want to live simpler, quieter lives.
When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
As an avid children's book reader, your message really resonated with me. As always, thank you for sharing and for inspiring us ❤️
Beautiful
Perfect quote.
A great quote! And another favorite of mine from the incredible children’s author Philip Pullman, “There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book.”
You are very listenable le,thank you for all of the book suggestions
How wonderful to be reminded of the C. S. Lewis quote. It’s very important isn’t it? Thank you!
I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.
Luckily, we have a lot of book stores in Russia! I love book stores! Probably, my most favorite shops out of all! Can spend hours there!!!
Well, it means you can open your own bookstore)
Thank uu ! 😍🙏🏻
I love your knit hat! Did you knit it?
Did you cut your hair? The cover pic for the video is adorable.
Well said.
@Emily Gonzalez - i agree, and it makes me wanna revisit my boxed collection of Beatrix Potter now!
And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)
Ah! Sounds so lovely!
Honestly, those floor to ceiling bookcases are dream I've had since I was young.
@@catherinenunan3584 Your comment made me all teary-eyed! Thank you for your encouraging words. :)
With a tall wood ladder on wheels...! Me too-one day ....sigh :)
There’s nothing like reading a good book 📚 & forgetting about all the negativity in this world 🙏🏼💖
I would love to read a book about you ✨ This would be one of the most magical, earthly, spiritual, emotional, sacred novel.
Books can show you the world and teach you to empathize 📖
what a sweet memory!! I did the same thing while watching her video =)
aw debbie, you have a great way with words--im wondering what books you found to be really profound?
What a beautiful comment and memory
The happiest day of my life was when I received my first library card!! Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️
I see Paola as the author/illustrator of those books!!!
If there’s a person I would love to sit and have coffee with, it’s definitely you, you have such a beautiful energy.❤️
I wish you the best there ❤
PS : I LOVED Hilda ! Such a beautiful and whimsical story, not to mention the absolute wonderful drawings !
i like Hilda two and loved the Tv Series 🎇🎑🎆🎑
Finally someone who feels the same about stories written for children. I love love LOVE watching children's series and shows because they convey so much meaning, truth and beauty in a way that is easily accessable, without much drama. Maybe I should take your advice and not only watch stuff "made for children" but also read children's books.
Thank you for this video and, in fact, all of your videos. I really enjoy watching them :)
I feel the same as you. "Children's" lit feeds my soul in tender and gentle ways.
Indeed. If you haven't seen it yet, I really recommend Hilda on Netflix. It is a precious series. As for books, I don't know many but revisiting old shows or movies in book form might be rewarding?
Edit: See what happens when you comment before a video ends lmao.
Going back to my hidey hole now.
I’m the exact same way!!
I'm 57 years old and I still enjoy reading books from my childhood and teen years. I find them comforting and they take me back to a less stressful time in my life.
I agree, I love a good children's book!♡♡♡
I'm a new author and illustrator of a children's book called The Magic Hot Air Balloon by Breanna Fabian .
PS: 'I could just be paid in books!' I FELT THAT 😭♥️
This is the beauty of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Thank you for sharing.
Children's books are really special for young and less young dreamers, you're right :)
Definitely not too rambley. I love it when you take the time to chat about what you'd learned, your experiences, and of course, book recommendations. Thank you for gracing us with your presence each week.
She has a meditational voice which makes her videos more relaxed than it could ever be

There is nothing quite as beautiful as a charming bookshop decorated for Christmas.
I’ve never really liked reading but you have such grace talking about books that I can’t wait to start reading “Once Upon A River”
Well said and agree 😊
Wow! This really resonated with me! Thank you for sharing!
My dream job. I love your videos. So peaceful .
Hilda is definitelly one of my favorite series and stories! I watch and wish I could live in her world.
Enjoy!
@@catherinenunan3584 I haven't heard of Jane of Lantern Hill. Ill look into that.
@@missylou_art8741 you will enjoy it. It is a sweet story but also has some deeper aspects that are thought provoking. Let me know how it goes.
X Michele
i love everything about this video, the books, the bookshop, the message and you - how inspirational you are!
It's such a lovely little shop and those covers are so beautiful! Hope you're enjoying your new position :)
If you enjoyed The Hidden Life of Trees and Braiding Sweetgrass you should try the following naturalist books
Thank you for sharing these recommendations, they are going down on my book list!
Off topic, but I’m Christy Ann Blocker, lol.
@@ChristysChannelYall It's nice to meet yah, Christy Ann Blocker :)
Love the book recommendations! Please do more.
I'm Intrigued, I just ordered this book through my local library. I look forward to reading it.
We need more people like yourself in this world" your sweet and inspiring, your perfect the way you are.💕💕💕
I absolutely LOVE children's books but I don't usually bring them up when recommending books to friends not sure how others will recieve them. I like that you made a point that they spark hope and I think that's why I'm drawn to them. If you have not read 'The Land of Elyon' series yet i highly recommend!
Success is not final ,failure is not fatal ,it’s the courage to continue that counts. That reminds me of you videos, thankyou
And that's the day i realized that how happy i am when i was around the books💓
thank you so much for sharing this.
When I get a notification that you have uploeded a video, my happy time begins 📸❣️🍊♥️🥳😘🥰🤩.❤️
Wow, so nice bookshop! I was lost in imagining my books on those shelves!
I have so much appreciation for others who still love and believe in the magic of books. I always love cuddling up with a good book. Beautiful vlog!
that bookshop looks dreamy *.* Hope you can keep working there after the holidays!!
Please, please do more video chats about books! I love seeing the books on the shelves at your workplace and in your home. This video was pure joy!
