      Not to mention the lack of 2nd Super Gauge ALSO really hurts.
      Plus, there's even MORE things that they added to deal with Grapplers is later games to, ESPECIALLY Zangief.

      Still my favorite fighting game TO THIS DAY. It didn't need overcomplicated mechanics thrown on top, it didn't need comeback mechanics, it didn't need camera changing or flashy effects for you to FEEL the hits of big moves; it was simple to pick up, difficult to master, and brutal. Fundamentals mean everything and execution matters. The roster is surprisingly balanced considering there were no balance patches once it shipped, and even the worst matchups can be won if you outplay your opponent.

    "Just jump the tickthrow"
    For those who don't know, in this game you can't jump out of tick-command throw, in this game they can actually throw you out of your pre-jump frames, they time it so the command "hits" right after the blockstun ends, to catch you exactly at your jump frames , the only way to get out of the situation is to reversal DP, and you can't buffer those here, you have to do a frame perfect reversal, the only thing you can do to make that easier is by pianoing the 3 buttons, you plink the 3 buttons and you get 6 shoryuken motions close to each other in one thanks to the negative edge, you don't know which version of the DP will come out but it doesn't matter in this situation.

      Okay this explains a lot and was a much needed comment. I dropped off playing Street Fighter after Turbo when I was younger and only recently later in life got back into fighting games so I never played Super. Seems like the inability to jump out combined with Zangief being projectile immune during lariet and the atomic fist eating projectiles actually had a grappler viable for once even if you still had to walk people down. Not being able to reliably counter outside of an insane plink is a little cheesy though. Sucks how often fighting games like to favor zoners so hard that grapplers can be hard to use consistently.

    • @huevonesunltd
      @huevonesunltd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@jackcoleman1784 In old games there used to be more real "zoners" , nowadays in modern fighting games true pure long distance zoners don't really exist, most characters who people consider zoners are actually just keep away characters with a fireball or midrange zoners.
      True zoners had been slowly decreasing in numbers probably because people really dislike playing against them, there are some exceptions though, if you want to see a real long distance zoning modern character look up matches of a character named Hilda from the game named Under Night in Birth
      Look at how crazy her moves look, even with that she isn't considered one of the best characters in the game,
      A very old example would be world warrior (vanilla) Dhalsim, as far as i remember he was the best character in the game, if your game has a keep away zoner who can do also do everything (that dhalsim actually had some crazy rushdown stuff even with his slow walkspeed) and is the best character in the game then you have a broken game.
      Dhalsim is one of the best characters in Turbo aswell but there at least he has really bad match ups against at least 1 of the other best characters in the game
      SF2 has been much about counter picking, matchups in all the games were very volatile, you could have a 2/8 matchup against one character in your favor and then have an unfavorable 8/2 against another.
      A lot of people believe that SF2 is "all about the fundamentals no gimmicks there" but that isn't true at all, when people say that they are usually thinking ryu vs ryu or ryu vs sagat and not really Zangief vs Honda which is horrible for Zangief, almost unwinnable, a 2/8 matchup in Honda's favor while at the same time Honda having a 2/8 matchup against Ryu.
      Like valle said, "back in the day all you did is to counterpick all day"
      Modern games at worst you see a 4/6 matchup and very rarely, almost never you see a 3/7
      Mostly it's 5.0 to 5.9, it's very rare to see nowadays ridiculous matchups like in very old school fighting games.
      Zangief vs Old Sagat is literally a 1/9 matchup in sagat's favor.

    Lot of Twitch chat and comments complaining about it being just robbery. It's generally half a round of inching your way in before you can start to play. There are 50/50's at that point but it's a lot of work to get through a strong player's neutral with counter pokes and slowly walking them down. They never played Gief into Guile or Chun in almost any of the games before, that's a true test of patience. I'm the oddball that plays both grapplers and lame/zoning style characters. About the only thing I don't play is hyper aggro/rushdown stuff, I do like Cammy but I always played midrange and even in SF5 I generally just poke and fish for punishes. To be fair I play basically everything lame/poke heavy, I do miss SF4's combo potential so you could turn a hit into a heavy damage combo through a couple 1f links.

    • @deadfr0g
      @deadfr0g 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Zangief’s SPD and running bear grab are actually the only grabs in ST that have whiff animations. (I’m not sure at what point they were added into SF2, but they definitely exist as of ST.)
      All throws (both regular and command) in SF2 activate instantaneously (0 frame startup), so any time you do a throw input while your opponent is unthrowable, you’ll just get the normal that you pressed instead.
      Funny thing: Because Honda and Hawk’s command grabs have no whiff animation, they can actually input them using negative edge to create a truly whiffless option select: if your opponent is throwable, your throw will come out... but if the opponent cannot be thrown, your character will simply do nothing. Note that this means they can input safe grab attempts while holding block!

      @cardsharpHS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gerardo Villarreal - no, because standing SPD has been a thing since forever (world warrior) as you get to diagonal up in the motion, the punch button stops any jump and does the spd instead
      The missed grab animation was in since Super in 93.

    • @deadfr0g
      @deadfr0g 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Gerardo Villarreal Ahh, really good question! Separate answers for Honda and Hawk.
      • Honda’s command grab motion actually doesn’t include an up input. The motion is forward, down-forward, down, and then you can end it with either back or down-back. This is where it gets even goofier: Honda has a glitch where you can “store” the motion: if you input the motion and then just keep holding the last directional input, you can wait as long as you want before you press any punch button to complete the input. This means you can do the motion any time and then sit there holding down-back, which means you’re blocking low, you’ve stored a command grab, plus you’re all charged for headbutt, buttsplash, and super. He’s a WALL. Difficult matchup for anyone who doesn’t have a fireball!
      • Hawk’s option select requires a simple trick to use correctly, especially because he has very few prejump frames (the delay between when you press up and when he takes off into the air): make sure you input the up direction while he’s busy doing something else. (Starting any special input while your character is still busy is an extremely useful technique known as buffering.) The most common way to use buffering with a 360 is in a basic “tick throw” setup. In this case, because Hawk has no whiff animation on his command grab, we can combine the tick 360 with negative edge to create his safe 360 option select: do a jab (or some other normal), hold down punch button(s), start the 360 during the jab animation, end the spin at down-back, and then release the punch button(s) as soon as your opponent exits blockstun. If your opponent does an invincible move to get out, you block it (and probably get to punish); if your opponent does just about anything else, they get tossed. This is virtually airtight if you time it correctly.
      ALSO, if your opponent is in the corner, you can follow up that 360 with a safe-jump jab (another option select that allows you to attempt a meaty on your opponent’s wakeup but still block any reversal)... so if they block your safe-jump, you can blockstring them into another safe tick 360... and if they do a reversal against the safe-jump, you block and punish them with a safe tick 360... which means you can repeat this cycle to create an extremely difficult but virtually inescapable* kill loop.
      *Against most characters, it’s 100% guaranteed if Hawk executes correctly.
      The old-school mentality regarding this loop is that Hawk is hype as hell; if you find yourself on the receiving end in this situation, well, serves you right for letting yourself get cornered by a low tier!
