Ah ces mains, tout est manifesté dans leur mouvements, un tempo assez lent, comme je les aime chez J S. Bach. Un cœur magnifique, des Solistes au meilleur niveau.... Un seul petit regret, les instruments modernes qui n'ont pas la rondeur des anciens! Merci pour cette magnifique interprétation

Wonderful to see the master conduct this outstanding orchestra.
We will say what we want, but what an immense musician he was. Admittedly, the baroque ones (and I am one of their admirers) have accustomed us to a lighter sound, often more acidic (more "authentic" if that makes sense),, and the choir seems a bit heavy here, but what a great musical moment.

One of the great things about Bach, is that his music sounds great whether you are playing it in an "authentic" style or as interpreted here - This performance really works for me, and what fabulous oboe d'amore playing. This performance is not my favourite, but gee, it works.

The WONDERFUL Herbert von Karajan! Years ago people tried to dissuade me from liking him because of his membership in the nazi party. But I learned to appreciate him for his in depth and marvelous command of the totality of musical perfection. I think he was at the end of his career at this perfect performance.
Not quite the end. This performance is from 1984. Karajan died in 1989 whilst in rehearsals for Un ballo in maschera at the Salzburg Festival.

On dira ce qu'on voudra, mais quel immense musicien. Certes, les baroqueux (et je suis de leurs admirateurs) nous ont habitués à un son plus léger, plus acide souvent (plus "authenntique" si cela a un sens),, et le choeur paraît ici un peu lourd mais quel grand moment de musique.

Wunderbar, wie der alte Karajan hier sich Bach nähert! Eine großartige, warmherzige und tiefgründige Interpretation, die näher an den Geist der Musik herankommt als viele blutleere "historisierende" Aufführungen. Da könnte heute manch einer, der es besser zu wissen meint, etwas lernen. Das konnte nur noch Karl Richter so.
… und doch wirkt es auf mich - dem damaligen Zeitgeist entsprechend - zu sehr getragen … zu viel Pathos - was aber ganz sicher an meinem ganz persönlichen Geschmack liegt und weniger an meiner Expertise :-)
@ , troppo pathos? Oramai oggi si suona, si esegue e non si interpreta più. Un po di anima ci si deve mettere sempre. Anche se Karajan da una esecuzione un po romantica. La cosa importante è ci piaccia e basta. Oggi le orchestre cosiddette " con strumenti originali" sono asettiche e sembra piu' un accompagnamento di chitarre. Nessuno sa come nel Settecento fossero i risultati sonori. La filologia non esiste, tarpa le ali e annienta la fantasia. Cordiali saluti.
Ja das ist die große Tragik unserer Zeit. Diese historisierenden Aufführungen wollen alles irgendwie richtig machen. Sie sind bar jeder Schönheit und Eleganz. Ich dachte ich stünde mit meiner Meinung alleine in dieser Welt.
@@fabriziogarzi9892 l'intensità e la coerenza di questa esecuzione lascia senza fiato. "Sublimare" significa passare da un certo stato all'altro della materia.... questi grandi musicisti, guidati dall'infinito Karajan, sublimano la realtà terrena e per una ttimo ci fanno toccare il Cielo!!!

Das macnificat von johann s bach unter herbert von karajan mit den berliner philharmonikern ist sehr gut dirigiert karajan am cembalo und der chor sehr schön gesungen und gespielt man sieht es geht auch mit einem tradionelem orchester

I like philological interpretation but this "traditional" rendition is outstanding....hard avoiding crying! Johann Sebastian and his son Karl Philip composed the best Magnificat in barocque and early classic era!

The communication though, and that in the most legato version I have heard of Quia respect... Very homogen sound in such a massive version! Where did all the syncopes go??! So for me, even a very warm and round ressonance in all of the vocal, both in choir and solists, I find them rather expressless, unwear of the meaning of the libretto. I got a Mozart-vibe during Fecit Potentiam (!) but if one don't apriciate the folklorich taste Bach had for renessance music, his baroque music will all in all sound flat or like in this performance, as the the mezzo sopranos (/alto) dress; very big and fluffy AND pink. Karajan is cute, though.😘

Weniger ist mehr. Ich empfehle (auch hier auf TH-cam) Vox Luminis (Bremen 2019). Dort sind Chor und Solisten nicht getrennt, alle singen alles.
Falsch . Blutleere Musealität ohne Leidenschaft ohne Eleganz ist schlicht öde und langweilig. Der Satz weniger ist mehr meint unnötiges wegzulassen und im wenigen und einfachen das bedeutsame des zu betrachtenden Objekts hervorzuheben.

I have never favored Bach's organ music but this is pure beauty from a superb conductor and orchestra.
Don’t give up on the organ music music. There are such riches there. Try Helmut Walcha’s recordings. Or Karl Richter’s.
This is NOT organ music. But if it was Bach organ music (as you put it, in the vast stretches of your imagination) what makes it beneath you?
I dont know how some people on this thread are talking about organ music, this video being about the MAGNIFICAT. And for those who are down on the organ, let's just say that the organ is a one man band, with more colors and power than any other instrument. Unfortunate how the religious and darkly Gothic, and even Quasimodoan connotations inevitably attached to the organ over the centuries (and reinforced by Hollywood and all mass media) have kept the many lay and secular from enjoying Bach's and others' beautiful creations.

For the legion out there who hate Bach organ music (probably because of its churchy atmosphere) give it a second chance. I would suggest giving a listening to Bach's Leipzig Manuscript, his Neumeister period and his Rinck period. These are intimate, but no less musical advance.
