Postum is made very near our house. We have Post, Kellogg, Rolston, and several other food companies in Battle Creek, Michigan. They are extremely careful about how their products are made. One of my Brother's was a grain inspector for the grain coming into the plants and they often rejected entire train loads because the grain did meet their strict requirements. Talk about clean. The food plants are often washed down by people in white suits that cover their whole body and face. They use hoses as big as firehoses that stream hot water, cleaner, and followed by a hot water rinse.
@@deanlollar8241 It's a coffee substitute that was developed during WWII. You can find it online from the Postum site and my local grocery store has it 😀
I was so surprised to see Postum Cake. I didn’t think that most people knew what Postum was! I am 75 years old & my Grandma use to drink Postum. Our church teaches healthy living because the Bible tells us that our bodies are the temple of God. So, she didn’t drink caffeine. I believe that Postum came out before caffeine free coffee. I usually drink caffeine free tea & coffee, but now I am thinking I want to get a jar of Postum & try it. And that cake looked scrumptious, so I am going to have to try that recipe especially since you said it has a caramel flavor because I absolutely love caramel!
I remember when I was very young and most of the elderly people I knew drank postum. I lived in a very Mormon town and they couldn’t drink coffee. You are an amazing woman!! I adore you and Matt! Praise God for some goodness in this ugly world❤

Tip, don't you let anybody eat all that cake till I get a chance to come by and taste it! I'm sure it's good, everything you cook is good! You really do have real talent in the kitchen!
I just had the thought- that your daughters current viewers, friends, and future grandkids, etc. are so fortunate to have these videos available to them. Watching my mother cook taught me so much when I was growing up. My mother cooked and baked using old family recipes. Even when I ask her for a recipe, I am not always able to replicate the magnificent product that my mother turned out. Many times, it’s in the details, and unless I’m watching her in action, I miss out on key techniques or changes that make or brake the expected result. Having a cooking video from your mother is so special; Worthy of preservation, and will bring joy now and in the future.
Growing up as a kid, the neighbor family was Mormon, and they weren’t allowed to drink coffee, so I remember them drinking their Postum every day, and we kids also had some on occasion and it was good. That was 60 plus years ago, but now you’ve got me thinking about it, and I have to make this cake! Thank you, Tipper.
Oh my goodness, that cake looks delicious. I am born and raised in NC and have never heard of it. I’m going to see if my grocery store carries it. If not I’m gonna buy it on Amazon. I’m definitely going to make this cake. Will probably drink some to. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
My Grandmother, Anna Bell Saunders, would drink Postum and make Postum cake. As you combined the ingredients into the different bowls the memories of her upper arms "flapping" beating the cake batter came to mind and my heart. Thank you.
Hi Tipper! So I watched this video this morning and you brought me to tears with your beautiful comments towards the end about the "itty-bitty connections" that we find in our lives. I couldn't agree more. For example, every time I make my Granny's spaghetti sauce recipe the smell of the sauce simmering all day transports me back to her kitchen and the many wonderful times I spent with her. You also mentioned that Appalachians are family centered people and it sure makes me wish that I could have grown up in Appalachia. I'm so glad that I discovered your channel and your blog. I enjoy your story telling, food recipes and the information that you provide about life in Appalachia. Thank you Tipper, for the insight and kindness that you convey through your online presence. My mother had a whisk that looks like yours, her's was bigger. She got it at the five and dime store in 1947! After she passed that was one thing I grabbed before somebody else took it. @@rhondabutler4172 Thanks for asking, Rhonda. It was a German Chocolate cake, made from scratch. The center was moist and rich, while the edges were slightly crispy. The icing recipe was an old one, handed down from my grandmother. Mom called it "creamy frosting". I think it was common in the 50s & 60s. As I remember, it was made with a stick of "oleo", some Crisco, sugar, flour, vanilla, and a small amount of scalded milk. If the milk was too hot, it would melt the margarine and ruin the frosting. Your cake is beautiful, Tipper. I’m trying to remember if I’ve heard anyone speak of Postum. I have to order an offset spatula. Enjoy the “fruits” of your labor. I know this cake is delicious. Sending Love from Texas ♥️🙏🤠 You are such a blessing. Thank you so much for reminding me of important connections!!!!!
The cake looks and sounds delicious. When I saw the Postum name in the video title, it really caught my eye. I hadn't heard that name in decades. When I was a kid, I remember my dad talking about a great aunt and uncle of his that were Seventh Day Adventist and drank Postum instead of coffee. I rarely even drink coffee anymore but, you have aroused my curiosity. I just might have to buy a jar of Postum to try it.

Thanks! My house burned down 10.12.21. A year later, still motel surfing. Lost memories. But especially my piano, organ, $30,000 music. But somehow my accordion survived. (Strapless). So many 🎄memories of Christmas 🎄 singing carol in evening 🥶🥶 Back at church fellowship halls. Waiting for us would be Postum and treats. I had just ordered straps for it and had looked for Postum. I have 0 Christmas at 73 and in small motel. I not kidding, I had just ordered accordion straps and Postum Amazon. Looking through comments I saw Walmart delivery also. This was surreal timing. I just started watching your channel in motel room. No oven so I can’t make the cake. (My Grandma’s best friend & cousin went to Battle Creek San to become RNs. My Grandma so wanted to go. But scarlet fever affected her eyes. And she was legally blind. My Mother & one sister became RNs. Her oldest sister became to MOTHER OF MODERN MEDICAL RECORDS. From Mission TX to LLUMC. Myself.LLU as well. But CPA turned to Hospital Administration. Become CEO in 1995. (And played accordion for hospital Patients at 🎄). What wonderful gift of Memories you brought to my mind. ❤️❤️🎄🎄. Grandma originally from AR.
I'm so sorry you lost your house and everything! I just can't imagine going through that!! Thank you so much for your support we really appreciate it! 😀
I remember now, back in my childhood days in Michigan, that my Grandma had Postum in her pantry. I remember one time when I ran out of Hershey's cocoa to add to my milk, and substituted it with her Ovaltine. Boy did I get a surprise 🫢 It didn't have sugar in it. It's such a pleasure watching your videos, how they bring back memories of long ago for me. You are very uplifting and inspiring. Have a wonderful day 🙏💕
Born in 1949 as 5th generation SDA, this is what my parents and grandparents had in place of coffee. And even let us kiddos have some after going out on a cold night especially singing Christ songs. carols. I looked for some a few weeks ago. Found some on Amazon n. But pricey. Brings back Christmas caroling memories. Plus memories of my Grandparents. Special🎄
You're a better froster than I am! I always tear the top of the cake up. But yours sure looks good. Thanks for the recipe, Tipper, God bless ya'll! Side-note on your deer problem video a few days back: I searched "deer scarecrow" online and turned up several websites with free instructions on making them. (I'd put a link but some creators frown on that.) You might even get a good video out of Matt building one. Hope that helps!
Congratulations, you're an influencer! I discovered Postum in the 80s as a college student. At the time I drank it with a dollop of sweetened condensed milk. 😳 Ha ha! Recently, just out of the blue, I had a craving for some Postum and picked up some of the chocolatey kind. Apparently my great grandfather drank a cup every morning. I will definitely try this cake. (Can't wait!) A frosting tip that might help you is to experiment with adding another TBSP of cream to slightly adjust the consistency, just like adjusting the powdered sugar. I discovered that by doing this, I didn't feel like I was 'fighting' to spread the frosting across the cake. It adds just a touch more fluffiness that helps the offset spatula glide right across the cake. 🧁
We love your vids. What a cool family. We hear you talk about your chickens but would love for you to do a video on them. Show us your coop, what you feed them, how do you keep their water from freezIng in the winter, how many eggs do you get, do they ever get sick … just a few ideas. We have chickens and they are so much fun. Hope you consider my idea. Have a great day and thanks for sharing With us!

What a beautiful cake! I’ve never tried Postum and really not sure I’ve ever seen it at the store. I love to try new things! I see a Postum cake in my future☺️
Going to make this cake for sure! I remember one of my Grandmothers drinking Postum when I was a child. Will have to try it as I’ve had to give up coffee. Thanks for the video Tipper!
I sure want to try this - coffee anything is my favorite. I adore coffee ice cream and can't find it often so I started using vanilla ice cream with a light sprinkle of instant coffee over it and that is good. I'm thinking Postum would work the same way and will try than, also.
My German grandma drank postum, but I’ve never tried it. I’ve always been a coffee and tea drinker, I would probably like postum. Thanks for the suggestion and recipe! I’m going to give it a try.
I drank postum as a kid and loved it. It has such a unique flavor. It’s the molasses i think that reminds you of caramel. I would love to make that. I think i would add dollops of whipped cream. 😋😍
That cake looks so delicious! My Grandparents liked to drink Chicory root "coffee", and the flowers were my Grandma's favourite, her favourite colour also🥰
I remember my mother telling me about Postum and how they used it for coffee during WWII. The cake looks delicious and I wish I could still eat cake. Thanks Tipper.

My family comes from Battle Creek Michigan. I can just about taste the smell of your cake, remembering the smell of the roasting that was in the air in the town. 😊
Back in the 70's my mom drank Postum when we joined the Mormon church, caffeine was a no no, and Postum didn't have any, we as kids loved sneaking sips here and there, I'm pretty sure she knew we were taking sips, but she let us think we were getting away with something. I loved it and haven't seen it for years, maybe I'll see if I can find some and give it a try 50 years later. Thanks for sharing.
My grandma, back in the Ozark Mountains, drank postum. This was in the 1950s. I don't know how long she'd been drinking it, I never saw her drink coffee. That caks sounds delicious, I live caramel so I think it would be a hit.
@@CelebratingAppalachia I do too. What I remember most was always around her working. I never saw her stop. Even as a girl it struck me how she cooked for days to feed all the neighbors that helped grandpa in the hay. She cooked on a wood stove in a tiny house with no electricity. In August, it must have been terrible over that wood stove for hours. I remember thinking ," I won't do tha." Bless her heart. Thanks for letting me reminisce.❤
I've only just finished my first jar of Postum, adding it to my morning coffee. I'd like to try Postum cake, as long as it could be made with lower sugar (like a tea cake).

Nostalgia for Postum! I think my grocery sells it. I'm so glad this cake has a caramely taste because I've been looking for that & didn't want to buy the cake mix for it. I like how your cake looks with the unfrosted sides. Thanks for this video 😋😊
I remember drinking Postum when I was a child in the late 50's to mid 60's Loved the stuff. I now drink Pero, since Postum has gotten expensive. I would drink Caro when I was in England and Wales for two years.
Last year when you talked about Postum I ordered me some. I remembered the name from my granny. I like it, but I'm afraid I am attached to my morning coffee. It makes a nice evening drink though when I don't want the caffeine of coffee. I am thinking that cake is something different for Thanksgiving. And when I got my offset spatulas I thought I had found a true wonder. Amazed we didn't have them sooner. 😊
My mom drank Postum. She couldn’t tolerate coffee! She made iced postum for my brother and myself to drink in the summer time! It was so good. It was better than kool ade!
I love Postum! As a kid I wasn't a fan of hot chocolate and no one in our family drank coffee. But my gramma drank Postum with real cream. Ohhhh!!!! Every once in a while we were lucky enough to get a cup. Sadly, I don't find it in any stores in our area anymore. Bought some online but it didn't seem the same. Hopefully that was just a fluke. Thanks for post-ing!

Happy holidays!
My grandma used to drink Postum. I loved it. All the great taste of coffee without the jitters. I just might have to try this. Thanks for another great video Tipper.
So glad you enjoyed it 😀
Your cake is beautiful, Tipper.
Thank you Grammy 😀
I really want to try it. I don’t like coffee, but I do love Carmel.
Thank you for sharing this! I plan on making it for myself and my mother in law. It sounds delicious and I can't wait!
I've never had Postem but that cake looks GREAT! Lovely video as always! Thanks for sharing! BLESSINGS! 😍♥️🙏🎀 Where's Matt?!? You guys are like 2 peas in a pod, don't hardly see one without the other! Lol...🤩😍😘
😀 Thank you Iris!!
(And played accordion for hospital
Patients at 🎄). What wonderful gift of
Memories you brought to my mind.
Have a wonderful day 🙏💕
Thank you Linda 😀
A family friend of ours that was like a second mom of mine drank Postum instead of coffee, I have fond memories of her.
Love those memories 😀
You can run that spreader under hot water and the icing will speed a lot easier
Looks delicious! Might try to make this cake!
Wow, that Postum cake looks fabulous! Such a shame that you can’t buy Postum in England 🥺
Thank you!! I will search for the scarecrows 😀
(Can't wait!)
A frosting tip that might help you is to experiment with adding another TBSP of cream to slightly adjust the consistency, just like adjusting the powdered sugar.
I discovered that by doing this, I didn't feel like I was 'fighting' to spread the frosting across the cake. It adds just a touch more fluffiness that helps the offset spatula glide right across the cake. 🧁
I hope you enjoy the cake 😀
We love your vids. What a cool family. We hear you talk about your chickens but would love for you to do a video on them. Show us your coop, what you feed them, how do you keep their water from freezIng in the winter, how many eggs do you get, do they ever get sick … just a few ideas. We have chickens and they are so much fun. Hope you consider my idea. Have a great day and thanks for sharing With us!
Thank you! So glad you enjoy our videos 😀 Will try to share about the chickens more 😀
I just ordered some Postum and the cocoa flavor!!👍 I'll have to try that cake...yummy! Growing up there was always a jar of Postum on the table 🥰
I was glad to discover the Rada brand through you. Good made in the USA knives and I will have to order that wisk. You can even get them on Amazon.
Glad you enjoy them too 😀
That looks wonderful I just knew you were going to say to put crushed walnuts on top, I'll sure pass this off to my beautiful bride known as the queen of baking because I'm not the baker although I do most of the cooking this is something she is very good at, thank you for sharing.
Made this last night! The cake was so moist and wonderful. I did have trouble with the postum clumping, so i need to mix faster next time. But seriously the best cake texture i think i have ever made!
Wonderful!
THANK YOU 💕👍 SO MUCH, as YOU DID TRIGGER MY OWN MEMORIES.
😀 You are welcome!
I remember when I was little , women were making cakes with instant coffee, sanka.. This video brought that memory back.
My German grandma drank postum, but I’ve never tried it. I’ve always been a coffee and tea drinker, I would probably like postum. Thanks for the suggestion and recipe! I’m going to give it a try.
I love your bowls!! Thanks for another recipe to try 😋
You are so welcome!
My daddy drank Postum. I’ll be giving this a try. My family loves coffee and caramel flavors. Thanks Tipper!
I hope you like it Rhonda 😀
My granny drank postum. I don’t like the taste of coffee but I like the smell of it. It made a very pretty cake. Hope you’re having a wonderful week.
Thank you Tipper! I've never had Postum but I'm going to try that cake.
Hope you enjoy 😀
I drank postum as a kid and loved it. It has such a unique flavor. It’s the molasses i think that reminds you of caramel. I would love to make that. I think i would add dollops of whipped cream. 😋😍
That cake looks so delicious!
My Grandparents liked to drink Chicory root "coffee", and the flowers were my Grandma's favourite, her favourite colour also🥰
Those bowls you used are just so beautiful I love them.
I remember my mother telling me about Postum and how they used it for coffee during WWII. The cake looks delicious and I wish I could still eat cake. Thanks Tipper.
I misread your heading Tipper. I thought it said "possum cake". LOL. My Mama really loved Postum and she would have loved this recipe and she would have loved you and your blog. She went to be with the Lord fifteen years ago. I love you guys.
😀 Thank you Joyce! I know you miss her terribly!
Those bowls are just lovely. Would you mind linking them at your convenience? My great grandma drank Postum and this just brought back all the feels!❤️
Thank you Tracy! Happy to remind you of her 😀 They are Texas Ware bowls. My mother n law gifted them to me ages ago. I think you can find them on Ebay and Etsy sometimes 😀
Very nice! will give it a try. This is how I prefer a cake frosted so it's not overwhelmingly sweet😉
I have to order postum. It is not carried in any of our stores. I love it for a warm beverage in the afternoon.
I never even heard of Postum before, you learn something new every day, interesting.
😀
I like Postum cookies too. Same thing as old fashion sugar cookies but with a table spoon of postum in the mix. Grammy use to make them all the time back in the day.. I'm going to make this cake tomorrow and see if it tickles my tummy.. Thanks for sharing..
That sounds great! I will have to try that 😀
Well, I never 😉 The cake looks delicious, but I'm a hard core coffee drinker! Thanks Tipper 🤗❤️
When I watch your video about Postum awhile back, I bought some and liked it. Now to try the cake. The way you described the cake, I could almost taste it!
Thanks Tipper for yet another great recipe!
That's a fine looking cake. If it's a mess, it's a delicious looking mess!
😀 Thank you!
My grandma, back in the Ozark Mountains, drank postum. This was in the 1950s. I don't know how long she'd been drinking it, I never saw her drink coffee. That caks sounds delicious, I live caramel so I think it would be a hit.
Love those memories of grandma 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia I do too. What I remember most was always around her working. I never saw her stop. Even as a girl it struck me how she cooked for days to feed all the neighbors that helped grandpa in the hay. She cooked on a wood stove in a tiny house with no electricity. In August, it must have been terrible over that wood stove for hours. I remember thinking ," I won't do tha." Bless her heart. Thanks for letting me reminisce.❤
Oh wow, I’m sure it is delicious. Postum is a favorite growing up. Grandparents had it. Our church, also uses Pero and Roma for coffee substitutes.
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful cake!
I've only just finished my first jar of Postum, adding it to my morning coffee. I'd like to try Postum cake, as long as it could be made with lower sugar (like a tea cake).
I didn't know they still made Postum!! My grandmother used to drink that. Her 2 favorite drinks were Postum and Ovaltine!
The name "Postum" was one I remember hearing, but by the time I came along my mom drank coffee. I will have to get some and try this cake and the drink! Thank you so much for this! Your videos, stories, music and recipes are wonderful and spiritually nourishing too!
You are so kind-thank you Nancy 😀
That looks so good! Thank you Tipper!😊🇨🇦
Thank you Gary 😀
I remember seeing a Postum jar in my grandmothers kitchen. I never drank it, though.
😀
I hope you like the cake if you make it 😀
YUM just in time for Thanksgiving ♥ from TEXAS
I had never heard of Postum. I am not a coffee drinker but the cake looks delicious.
thank you 😀
My mom drank Postum. She couldn’t tolerate coffee! She made iced postum for my brother and myself to drink in the summer time! It was so good. It was better than kool ade!
I'm going shopping tomorrow. I think I'll look for Postum. If I find it I will try it. Thank you so much ❤️
Thank you for watching 😀
My grandma's drank Postum but I've never tried it. The cake looks delicious! Thanks Tipper.
Thanks for watching 😀
@@CelebratingAppalachia Thank you all for great videos! 🤗
I bet this is amazing! I will definitely try it. Will be good to have as something new for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Hope you are having a great week! God bless!
You are so welcome! Hope your week is going good too!
