My grandmother taught me how to make yogurt in the 1970s. She was born in 1887. I treasure the recipe card she wrote out and I have shared copies with my cousins. Your video brought back great memories.

My friend and neighbor’s husband is from Turkey and makes homemade yogurt and after eating it , l can’t eat store bought . I used to buy the yogurt full of the syrupy sweet fruit . Now l just drizzle honey on it and walnuts. It’s so delicious.

Thank you Tipper for the recipe. I have never thought about making yogurt. This afternoon I paid $1.69 for a 6 oz container. Making your own would definitely save money. I will have to try half a batch sometime. Meeting with girl friends is so nice. I have two cousins from out of town that visit with me for four days about every three months to just shop at yard sales, cook our favorite meals, and spend half the night reminiscing about growing up together. It makes for great memories.

I make yogurt in my InstantPot. So easy. After swirling in the sink of cold water (takes about 4 minutes} it goes back in the pot in the low setting with the starter for about 8 hours. Then into the refrigerator until the next morning when I dip it into cheesecloth lined strainers and turn it into Greek yogurt. I get 3 qts. that way. Big savings.

I remember my mom making yogurt in a yogurt maker that sat on the counter and plugged in the 1970s. It made 6 individual serving size containers. Back then grocery stores issued trading stamps, and I expect that’s where the maker came from. Mom saved the stamps up in books and exchanged them once full for a lot of household items. We eat a lot of yogurt today, so I think we’ll give this a try and get back into making it.

My wife used to make it and wrap the pot with a blanket and placed it on a heating pad set on low, overnight. Now she uses the Instapot. She also strains a portion of it through cheesecloth to make Greek yogurt and Lebanese yogurt.

Before I moved, I had a lovely big freezer that always had a gallon of milked saved to keep my yogurt going. My chickens love yogurt and I make sure they get some when molting for some extra calcium that we girls surely need. I like to make overnight oats with it and that is an excellent treat for my girls in the hard cold winter. I enjoyed your video and plan to try your cooler method as I put my containers in the oven with light on when I leave for work at night until I get home.

I make yogurt by heating the milk in a double boiler. I used to have an electric Dannon Yogurt Maker which made six or eight individual cups of yogurt and was a huge waste of space. The best thing about it was the spoon thermometer, which I still have, that it came with which says "Add Starter" when the milk temperature cools enough. My husband had the idea to keep the temperature steady while it yogged by putting it in a thermos. Seems like a no-brainer but along with the other complicating supplies I had "The Yogurt Book" which went into the history of yogurt yogging in yak bladders while Arabs rode camels across the desert or something (details may be off.) I was really worried about where to put my yogurt out of a draft and how many blankets I should wrap it it in.
Turns out, using our old thermally insulated coffee carafe worked amazing and that is what I use to this day. When it's done I switch it to a normal container.

I imagine you could use your bread machine to make it. The setting where the bread rises. I wonder if ingles or anywhere around here has yogurt starter. Maybe the health food store here in Franklin, I’ll have to check.
Im going to make it your way.

    • @cumberlandquiltchic1
      @cumberlandquiltchic1 ปีที่แล้ว

I was going to ask you how long it lasts and you just said 2-3 weeks. You know, that’s Cheaper than buying it. I think the stony room is $5 and something , maybe more by now. ive not bought it in a while. That sure would be a good thing to use fresh in season fruit in ! When the strawberries come in etc.
thank you for this! Is about quit eating it and I love it!
Here in franklin the 4L farms sells the whole milk that has the cream on top. Im not sure , it might be lightly pasteurized. But it is like milk from the farm. There’s a big thick layer of cream on top and so rich. The ingles in clayton sells it so I don’t know if Murphy would have it or not. I’ll see if I can find the brand name and let you know.

Must try this. I buy ten to twenty dollars worth of yogurt per week.
I use plain whole milk yogurt instead of sour cream and also pile it on toast after spreading the toast with a fruit spread. my favorite is peach jelly then yogurt.
My grand daughter likes strawberry or blueberry preserves, then yogurt.
The jelly makes a barrier so the yogurt doesn't soak the toast too much and they're like a personal cheesecake for breakfast or a snack.

I love to make tzatziki with whole milk Greek yogurt. I have made my own yogurt but for Greek yogurt you have to strain it until it's thicker. It's a lot of steps and takes time so I usually just buy the yogurt. It's funny how different plain yogurt can taste--so you do have to try different ones until you find a brand you like.

You and your friends looked like you were really enjoying yourselves. There's nothing like spending time with really good friends and I love the idea of homemade gifts. I'd much rather have a homemade gift over a store bought gift anyday. It means so much more. The yogurt looks yummy had my mouth watering. Thankyou so much for sharing. Hope you your family and friends have a blessed, happy, and healthy New Year.
