    This is my first ever social media posting, gotta give you guys some love. I'm obsessed with TH-cam scotch reviews, and you 4 Dummies are my favorite. This Lag 8 is also a favorite. $65 in Cleveland, but honestly $80 is still an appropriate price. Can't knock it for only being 8 years old. There's too much scrutiny about age statement vs. NAS. Quality and enjoyment for your dollar is all that matters. At least Lagavulin was confident enough in this product to give it an age statement. If the label was a 200 year Anniversary NAS, we'd be lauding this fantastic whiskey for being a bargain at $80 (compared to countless other great special editions from other distillers often above $100).
    Props guys. Entertaining reviews. I know you guys aren't afraid of blends, I'd love to see some Compass Box reviews. They have some really intriguing stuff.

      Hello Tribe Time! Welcome to the channel and first and foremost Thank You! We're really glad you went through with it and posted a comment (it's not that bad is it...LOL). Seriously though, sharing information and talking it out is so helpful to everyone and it really makes this so much more enjoyable! So, now that you've broken the barrier you might as well become a regular commenter around here! ;-)Now, the Lag....ahhh...Love the Lag! and for $65 it's an even better bottle for sure! I like your point about Lag having the sack to put the age on the bottle. And couldn't agree more about the bottom line being enjoyment for your dollar!! As for some CB....I picked up a bottle a few weeks ago, the St King St Glasgow, so that should be getting reviewed here soon!Thanks again, ~Cheers, Mark

    Great review guys, have had this bottle for a little while now and I found myself totally agreeing to what Andrew said about being able to sit with a dram for a long time, I have found this bottle great to sit with and read a book. Recently found your guys' channel and am loving the reviews, will be working my way through your videos, cheers!

    Good review. I just tried this stuff and love it. Not sure if I like it better than the 16, but the fact that it even compares makes it worth it,

    I just bought a bottle of the 8 after I already had the 16 and I love this and I got it for $45.99 at my local grocery and by the way the have the 16 for $71.99, this is my 1st foray into heavily peated scotch (always been a bourbon guy) and now I'm hooked and can't the flavor out of nose.

      Love it!!! I've fallen for that Islay romance myself, LOL! Lag 16 is one of my all time favorites and I'll never turn a dram down. I usually have a pretty hefty stash of it at any given time! The fun for you now is to explore the other Islay distilleries....and then on to some other non-Islay peated whiskies....compare and contrast. The subtle differences become more and more apparent to you as you continue your journey! Enjoy!!!! ~Mark

    "Burnt toast with some jam on it" is the 1000% perfect description! I taste specifically lingonberry jam, and it complements the smoky distillery characteristic SO well! and even better, now it seems to be part of the core range :)

    After 30 + different scotches on my journey I am making my way to Islay with my first Lagavullan 8. It was $43 before tax and just couldn't pass it up. I am yet to try the 16. The cheapest it is in my area is $100 so I have to consider this to be a good deal. I'm looking forward to trying it as well as other Islay scotches. I have very much enjoyed your reviews keep up the good work.

      Well I hope this 8 was easy enough for you...it tends to be a bit on the "rougher" side compared to the 16. Enjoyable yes, but I would lean to the 16 every time. Now that being said, I get the price difference...But regardless, welcome to Islay!! :-) ~Mark

    Sup Gentleman - found a local place that has this in abundance for 55 a bottle, pretty tight! Next to the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, this is a definitely bottle EVERYONE should have in their bar. Smoke city, nice peat, TCP, vanilla... this is INDEED exceptionally fine. I was not as much a fan on the first bottle, but this one has grown on me.

    I got two bottles from duty free here in the UK. Nice review, thanks. This evening I had some after a small glass of Caol Ila 12. The Lagavulin is just so much livelier and explosive... I know what you mean about being a little one dimensional in the tail though - I feel like I'm left with a few too many boiled sweets and not enough else.
    I saw another of your reviews - the NAS Machir Bay Kilchoman - I've got a bottle of that on the go, too. If you compare the two, for me the Kilchoman (I imagine the ages must be a little similar?) somehow just has more going on, for longer. No regrets about either bottle, though.
    Anyway, keep up the good work. Warm regards from across the pond. J

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I enjoyed both of those bottles, and while I don't think you can go wrong with a Lagavulin, I am axnious to sample some other bottles from Kilchoman. We met a gentleman last week that was a huge fan of their line and learned a bit so I think we are ready to sample some new bottles.
      If it is any reflection of quality, The Lagavulin 8 did not last long on the bar.
      Thanks for watching!

    What a great Scotch. Here in CNY (if you can find it) it runs $47+tax. Picked up three extra bottles, it's that good, IMO. I'd rate it at least a 3.5.
    Lag 16 is all over the place in price. $82 +tax being the best I've found. Well worth it also. I'd rate the 16 at 3.75 all day every day. Good review, really. Although you were a little tough on the score.

      The 12yo 2016 is a good malt, indeed! But I'm struggling to pay twice the amount of a Lag8... On the other hand this year's Lag12 also features the 200th anniversary logo on the bottle+box, so maybe as a souvenir..?! XD

    I can not argue with any of you fellas and what you brought to the table on this review. Thanks to you guys and TEST I have set up my own rules to figure out who is getting my $. First off Lagavulin 16 is my baseline for all brands of scotch (and bourbon for that matter) at $81.99. The first thing I thought of when I tried this one was "Green" and at $68.00 I thought nice try marketing, while the upped abv is nice it's not going to hold me, I will pay more for the 16. The 12 year cask strength at 56.5 abv for $85.99? Yeah, I will do that. It appears that Lagavulin payed attention to your availability comment on the 8 Shawn since this offering might be around for awhile. Cheers and thanks! :0)

      I LOVE Lagavulin! Yes, some other than others....but in the end I'll always fall back on my 16. I wish I could get it cheaper (here in Indiana it's usually around $119). That being said, I've been working on both this 8 and 12 and enjoy them both as well as they do have the Lagavulin peat that I just love! Anywho, thanks for commenting SDD!! ~Mark

    Coming back to this Lag 8. I just had some Laphroaig Quarter Cask (which is great), and wanted to compare another peaty scotch. Lagavulin's peat is so much different. Not that one is better than the other (but Lagavulin is better, hahaha). On the nose this time around I'm getting strong Golden Grahams. Golden Grahams for godsake!! So interesting and so exceptional. Get some if you can get your hands on it.

      @Scotch4Dummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOVE IT!!!! You're absolutely right about the the Laphroiag/Lagavulin peat differences! Really laughed at your Golden Grahams nose...we've come up with some off the wall smells and tastes too. We really try not to stifle them, regardless if they seem a little less conventional! Good stuff!! Cheers!

    Would love to sit down with you guys and have a dram.
    I find with Islay whisky's age is not always the tell tale of the expression. Whereas with most other Scotch I find for the most part under 18 years the profile usually isn't to my liking. Yes I know, I'm a snob.
    I haven't tried this Laggie but I will based on the review you fellas did. I have other Laggie's.
    Bruichladdich. The Port Charlotte PC6 and PC7 not to be confused with regular Port Charlotte is maybe the best Islay whisky I've ever had (exluding 70's Port Ellen). PC6 and PC7 are 6 and 7 year old cask strength expressions. PC6 will typically run you over $400 + now unless you find it at auction (was originally $100 when released a few years ago). No longer found in stores. It's only 6 years old but blows away many a bottle 3 or 4 times it's age. They are up to PC12 now (12 year olds) but the PC6 blows it away, in my not so humble opinion.
    If you find yourselves in San Francisco there's a dram waiting for you :)

    I really love the 16, and here in Canada the 16 is $122.95 after tax. The 8 is $99.95 after tax. For the longest time I noticed the 8 was only available online through the LCBO, and I would have ordered it, but I just checked online and it's available locally at 3 different locations. After seeing this, I may have to go pick one up.....Probably tomorrow, haha! Cheers Gents! Wanna see a review on Ardbeg 10 :)

    Hi guys, weird coincidence again today. Wanted to do a head-to-head comparison of Lag8, Kilkerran 12 and Talisker 10 at my whisky store today (brought my own bottles), but alas, we did not find the time. So I am sitting here tonight in front of your review and do the comparison as we speak... Btw. Lag8 is one of my young malt favs, but $80 is pretty substantial, here you can find it at about 55 EUR, which is on average still more expensive than the 16. But hey, the 8 is just a sexay + very exiting malt. :-)

    Email list? It's basically everywhere here in Scotland I even picked 2 bottle up in my cash n carry for under £85. I would like to know how limited this limited edition is 🤔 anyway it's a cracking whisky and for me I like a young Islay whisky so it beats 16 for me. Another great review 👍🏻

    Guys, you need to try the Classic of Islay some day. It's a young independent cs Laga bottling. While it has its own style, there are definitely similarities in taste and smell.

    • @Scotch4Dummies
      @Scotch4Dummies  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the story on this?

    • @Hogibaer
      @Hogibaer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bottler, Jack Wiebers Whisky World (JWWW), is an independent bottler from Berlin. Close sources say he has an old contract with Lagavulin to get a steady supply of young sherry-matured Lag. His contract goes back to at least 2001, a time where Lagavulin still sold casks, and since it is not time-restricted, it has been going on for 15 years straight. Lagavulin presumably repeatedly tried to end the contract by paying him a certain sum, but he wisely refused. For a cask strength smoky sherried whisky, albeit nas and probably well below 10, it is sold for around 40 EUR and nigh unbeatable for the price. And heck, even it if WAS from another Islay distillery (it's definitely Islay peated malt!), still a great bargain these days as the quality varied a bit (--> all single cask bottlings), but is usually very good. :-)

    I've heard good things about this scotch. No need to beg or put your name on an email list. TWE has this in stock for $56.60 and got 4.5/5 stars. Without tasting it, I would probably rate it a 3, due to your price of $80.....Its nice to find a young scotch this young and taste so good. I've had Westward whiskey, its an American 2 yr whiskey and it was bomb. You can find most scotches out their if you know where to look. My problem is TWE has everything and I want it all..:-))) Great review.

      We're not above begging Keith! But, we have started taking a closer look at our future purchases and maybe following a trick or two from you with TWE.I'm really curious for you to get ahold of one of these bottles as you're usually pretty particular about age. Not that it can't be good, but I know you didn't purchase that 2 yr old before trying it! ;-)~Mark

    • @keithpetersen560
      @keithpetersen560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, your right. My palate leans toward the 15 - 21 yr scotches. The Lag 8 yr is a scotch I would definitely try, but probably not purchase. Only because there are so many other scotches that I have an interest in. I did not purchase the Westward 2 yr whiskey, but had a whiskey flight at the "Hard Water" in S.F. for my birthday and it was part of the 5 tastings. If you have any questions about purchasing from TWE, just let me know. Hey, nothing wrong with begging when it comes to scotch. I cracked open my HP 21 last night and had a sample. It was much better than the HP 18 IMO. Good times.

    • @keithpetersen560
      @keithpetersen560 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark; Liquor Hound said the Lag 8 yr is sweeter than the Lag 12 yr. Purchasing would be not problem. TWE has it for $57.56. The HP 21 is so good. Smooth, nice complexity, no heat, with some slight peat to chew on. Its 47.5 abv but drinks like a 40 abv with bold flavors.

      Hahaha! Now $70... that's tough, I really think it's worth $55. But, I also am a huge Lagavulin fan so have to have a bottle on hand!

    I can get Laga 8 for $55 near Chicago. I think this is an awesome scotch and half the price of Laga 16. Cheers !

    If you guys are rating this on a 5 point scale and are only giving it 3 or 3.5 stars, you better check your taste buds. This for me would be a 4.5 out of 5. What faults are there?......minor if any....

      We rate on a 4 finger scale... If it's awesome we'll take a 4 finger pour! 😁
