Lagavulin 8 Year Review - Younger and Cheaper Core Range Lagavulin - Is This a Bargain?

  • Lagavulin 8 year: it's half as old as the 16 Year we all know, but it's bottled at a more respectable 48% ABV. It might also be natural color and non chill-filtered. Does that make this whisky - available in many places for more than $30 less than the 16 Year - a good value? This is a whisky many of you have brought up in the comments below prior videos on the channel, so in this video, I'll taste the whisky, give my thoughts on how it compares to other entry-level Islay whiskies, and share my review.

Lag 16 is my favorite but I do love the Lagavulin 8! Beautiful, crisp, coastal, vanilla, apple - delicious and with slightly rough edges! I love it! Fabulous!! I pay about $100.00 in Canada so it's not as cheap as other places but still considering it's quality I am fine with the price and grab it often! Cheers!

Excellent Review. Thanks. Thought you may want to hear what this currently sells for in Ontario, Canada. The govt liquor store, LCBO, sells the 8 YO for C$110 and the 16 YO for C$185!! I bought two bottles a few years ago just before the prices started rising and have yet to crack them open. Paid about C$140!

Yeah, that's a little high, even after the conversion, and doesn't make either much of a bargain ...

Great notes 👍 My favourite Lagavulin is any batch of the 12 year old, but this comes a close second. I much prefer it to anything else they do, including the 16 year old.

The 12 is something different, but this one is definitely nice.

Bought myself a bottle as my annual Christmas treat and have to say at the present time I have put it back in the box and shoved it into a cupboard as I currently don't like it at all Have found the smoke overwhelming and could still taste it after a couple of hours 😢

Just got a bottle about a week ago and I'm interested to see if it opened up as you say. Thanks for the tasting notes.

If you like getting a nice massage with a firm grip, take the 16. If you like to be punched in the face, take the 8.
I honestly like the 16 just a tiny bit more. If it came with the same specs as the 8, it wouldn't even be a competition. But 43 abv, colour and chill filtration seem to tame it a bit, while the 8 feels more unrestrained.

To me, they're pretty close on quality, and the choice likely comes down to personal preference ... which only supports the argument that the Lag 8 is overpriced since it cost about $12 or so more. Where do you come out?

I got it for around 55 Euros in a holiday/BF sale, my current favorite, and at this price was a steal

PC 10 is so much better.

      @@whiskywhereabouts Difference is only € 9 .
      I'm not saying that I don't like Lagavulin,but it's a little bit overhyped,like Macallan.

In my market the 8 is 92.99 and the 16 is 93.99. For that I think I’d rather get the 16.
