I'm here because Roy told me to look this up, ha ha. This is indeed TH-cam gold. Love your face at 6:35, Jason! And this is a great review. It took me a while to come around on peat. It wasn't love at first sip, but now I'm a full blown peat head. It's funny how that happens.
Lol. Thanks. Roy loves this video. Lagavulin 8 is the one that showed me there is more to a peated scotch then just smoke and medicinal aromas. Now j love peated expressions too. Thanks for checking it out.
I hope so Roy. I trip to Scotland is definitely in my future. I really enjoyed the ardbeg as well. I will look forward to the day when we can share a dram. Slainte
Sweet, Smoky, and Savory (ie. Barbeque). That is what makes Islay unique and wonderful. If Lagavulin is your thing, the 12 year editions are Cask Strength! I myself had to drink a whole bottle of Laphroaig 10 until I loved the Peat. It was hard... I turned green a few times... If you want to try medicinal, the Laphy is the epitome of a medicinal Islay! Lagavulin is the savory, Ardbeg is the Earthy/Ashy, and Laphroaig is the Medicinal! HP is like Heathery light Peat for beginners... Anyway, thanks for sharing your reaction to Islay Scotch! It is nice to know that I was not alone in being able to go "Palate Deep" in the bog... Cheers! 🥃
Now, try an experiment. Pour two drams of Lagavulin 8 and two of Lagavulin 16. Put two drops of water in one of each and do the same tasting. You'll be amazed what that little drop of water does to the nose. Just found you by accident for your review of best value bourbons. Just subscribed. Nice channel!
Always disliked Scotch. But took a gamble on Lagavulin 9 since it was heavily discounted ($26 for a 750mL!) and tried it on Thanksgiving. I totally had a similar reaction to you! Was expecting to be grossed out by the peat, but found so many layers to every sip. It's truly a journey. Cheers!
loving your reviews! You pick out so many different flavors. I've been into scotch for a few years , i love pretty much everything, but the only flavors i can pick out are , yum...
Thanks Colin! I let the whiskey sit a good amount but I edit that out. It really opens up. Especially the peated stuff. But yes ..yum is the best note! Thanks for watching! Cheers.
Hey Jason, this was a nice review of the Lagavulin 8. We will make a Peathead out of you yet 😁. My top 6 Single Malts are all made on Islay. I head out in a month for my next trip there. I will be revisiting all 8 current Islay distilleries and the 9th, Ardnahoe, if it is open to the public by then. I look forward to you trying the Ardbeg 10. Cheers ! ✈️🥃😋👍
Thanks Duane! I hope I did the Lagavulin 8 justice in this review. For the first time I picked up those peaty sweet bbq notes that everyone talks about and I really enjoyed it. That trip sounds like an amazing peaty experience! Looking forward to the Ardbeg alot more now. Cheers!🥁🥃
Welcome to the Dark Side! Dude I’m so glad I jumped into peated whisky early. I love the complexity of these and I swear each time you go to it you can pick out something new. ❤️🥃 can’t wait for you to try that Ardbeg. FYI next time you grill. Try marinating some meat with peated whisky. 👍
Thanks Quests! I totally thought of bbq-ing with this stuff when I tasted it. I was excited to get those sweet bbq flavors that everyone says you get from an Islay whiskey that I could never pickup before. Ardbeg here I come! Cheers! 🥁🥃
The Mash and Drum yes completely agree with you on the bbq taste. Lol there’s no turning back now. I don’t want to influence your thoughts on the Ardbeg. So I’ll wait for you to try it. Cheers!
That was fun! Great job taking the viewers with on your experience, I’m currently working thru a Lag 8 & love it. As you mention for being just 8 years old it’s really flavourful & rewarding. Sub’d!
Thanks for your reviews Jason. I started here after seeing this clip on Aqvavitae's vPub on Thursday and love the way you can express what you're tasting. Keep up the great work.
I just landed here because Roy from Aqvavitae suggested we'd see this at the 2019 live stream from the whiskey tribe bastard's ball. He wasn't lying when he said this is yt gold :D
Lol, I feel your pain. Aside from the fact that I don't enjoy dirty earth in my mouth I appreciated your review. For this that do can probably appreciate your review. As always though you do a fantastic job, cheers buddy!
Thanks Scott. I think the variety of scotches I tried leading up to this was huge. The peat was not overwhelming to me and I was able to get a sweet and smoky bbq flavor from this which was surprising and really enjoyable. Cheers!
Great review! Coming to this whisky with a fresh perspective is a good thing as you're picking up some things that palates more experienced with peated whisky may have a tendency to overlook... Slainte!
Thanks man. I think for me I did it right working my way through different regions. I found some similarities to other scotches but that sweet smokey flavor was proprietary to this whiskey and I loved it. And I see why alot of others do too. Thanks for watching. Slainte
Peat is neat! Really can't be beat! Lay that bottle by my feet. Lagavulin 8, a sweet, peat, tasty treat! Another fun review. Your scotch journey has been exciting. Hope you'll continue some other month!
Your like MC Peat monster. lol. Yes I will definitely be fitering in some scotch reviews in between the bourbon now that Im more comfortable with it. really enjoyed it.
Fisrt, congrats for the nice job. How was this schotch trip for a bourbon guy, in general??? I love bourbon, but as I always say... scotch whisky has a increddible wide range of flavour profiles and complexity that you can't find in bourbon. I wish you keep trying a bunch of these amazings spirits and developing your palate for higher challenges, like Laprhoaig, Octomore, Springbank, and more. Slaintè!!!
Hi Renato! It was an eye opening experience for sure. I wanted to try more scotch once I knew my palate and nose got better with bourbon. This allowed me to appreciate scotch a lot more and the WIDE range of flavors as you mentioned. I have such an appreciation for peated scotches which is something I never thought would happen so I plan on trying Laphroaig soon as well as other Ardbegs, Lagavulins and other peated scotches that you mentioned. There is so much to try and Im very excited. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching! Slainté!
@@TheMashandDrum Glad to hear it. As a scotch afficionado I always happy when a new guy walk into the club. Certainly bourbon will stays in your heart, but expanding horizons is such an amazing thing!!! I look foward to see you trying the Laphroaig 10. The yodine and medicinal notes, surrounding by this ashy campfire peat is a punch in the face. You will love that... or hate!!! Lol!!!
really, medicinal peat?? I dont think you had smell medicinal peat before hehe, lagavulin is one of the one clean peated one, I think you meat laphroaig

It was a bit. haha! This was really good. That sweet bbq flavor kept me sipping on this the rest of the night. Cheers!
Perfect example of "Islay Face." =)
Yes!! *This* is why I love whisky. One day, if fates allow, we will sip on Islay together. You're hooked!
I hope so Roy. I trip to Scotland is definitely in my future. I really enjoyed the ardbeg as well. I will look forward to the day when we can share a dram. Slainte
@TheMashandDrum ,Meanwhile, did you guys shared that dram?
LAgavulin 16 is the best!
Wish I could upvote this more. First single malt I ever had (c. 1999) was the Lagavulin 16. Wow was I hooked.

Nice! How would you compare Lagavulin 8 with Ardbeg 10?
You should try the Lagavulin 16 (if you have not yet). It's my #1 favorite Scotch so far. Unbelievable stuff!!!
My most prominent tasting notes with lagavulin is saddle leather. Delicious saddle leather
I can see that. The peat flavor brings so many other flavors along with it. It's what has drawn me more to the islays. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Just tried mine got it for $38 bucks great value. I got sweet and smoky and like a toasted marshmallow delicious.
Definitely started getting marshmallow as it opens up.
Very well done Jason! I'm in. Thanks aqvavitae for the hint!
Thanks for watching! I am loving these Islay's now! Cheers and I have more scotch I will be reviewing soon!

Really should try Lagavulin 16. It's sherry finished. It's their signature whisky.
Thanks Jason fantastic to see you enjoying a great Islay! And thanks to Aqvavutae for the recommendation. Hope you guys had a great time in Austin.

Where did you find the anniversary edition in sept 2018? Or have you had it for a couple years. Found this vid due to Aquavite mentioning it
In Ohio here actually.

really, medicinal peat?? I dont think you had smell medicinal peat before hehe, lagavulin is one of the one clean peated one, I think you meat laphroaig
