If early Thing weren't modeled as having dinosaur hide, the closest analog to Ben on the Challenger would have been Rocky, but Ben was much better. Thingbeard the pirate came back as an amusement park animatronic in the Idol o' Millions storyline. I love these reviews and need to pull out my stack of Essentials and read again from the start.
I remember when I first read these early issues of FF in the Marvel Pocketbooks of 77/78, It really blew my mind how much more enjoyable they were then the ones I was getting off the racks at the time.
I went to a birthday party with some friends earlier today and I happened to be wearing my Doctor Doom shirt (based on the great Larry Lieber MSH 20 cover). They gave me a choice of party hats, green or gold. Of course I told them that “Doom wears green!”
Joe Sinnott's inks on this are a real anomaly, but it does make it feel even more in line with the Kirby Challengers comics that were inked by Wally Wood.
There is Bannerman's Castle on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River that can be reached in minutes via helicopter from Manhattan. Perhaps in the FF universe, Doom bought this island and castle and restored it. Maybe he bought from relatives of Bruce Banner, man. :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollepel_Island
This theory does play into the fact that Reed made the FF on purpose, and then made them public figures so they could cope. He would need a villain to fight against when there's no other trouble to vent the team's anger.
The amazing evolution of a “villain”. Doom can’t be portrayed in any MCU property. I enjoy every moment of Victor when he encounters any villain, hero, situation. He’s a villain, hero, leader, capable of taking on the most dangerous situations. Make mine Doom.
Someone's comment under an "Ultimate Invasion" review, stated 616 Doom is the Maker, then folks forgot? Which makes it super funny if 1610 Richards is wearing a Doom mask. I dont know tho
I prefer these earlier issues. The public doesn’t necessarily always support them, the Thing is a bit more surly, Johnny can be kind of a jerk, it’s just great comics. Later on, when Kirby really gets cranking creatively they almost become guest stars in their own book.
The Reed is Doom theory makes the Ultimate Fantastic Four's The Maker all the more chilling.

I remember reading this issue and then spending like half an hour looking for a real book titled Science and Sorcery,

I actually really like your Doctor Doom theory. It kind of adds a whole new dynamic to the team along with their stories.
A great theory, Tom. You are the right man to explore this further!

Such a cool take on the relationship between the FF and Doom! Great episode, Tom.

Yeah, his portrayal in movies has been tragically bad.
The very same month that this issue appeared, Jack also created the very similar looking Monster in the Iron Mask in Tales of Suspense #31.
Nice theory, but I think YOU are Dr. Doom, Tom.
Much more likely that the convoluted conspiracy theory presented here. I think its a misdirect.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
The reed doom theory is blowing my mind 😂
New canon just dropped.
I had all of these comics decades ago... it was cool back then... it made everything that came later ...well... not as great

How long till we get the first appearance of puppet master?

The idea of the thing being happy anywhere near water is laughable.
