They definitely should’ve made a second Rocketeer. I know it didn’t make what they wanted it to make in theatres, but I’ve got to imagine it did pretty well on VHS. Everyone I knew as a kid loved The Rocketeer. When I was little that was one of the movies we had at daycare, and every boy there loved that movie. Miramax was owned by Disney. Would’ve been interesting if sometime between the mid ‘90s and early 2000s they handled a sequel. Do an R rated sequel... or a PG-13 that at least got away with the kind of stuff Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom did. Like I could see Robert Rodriguez doing a cool Rocketeer movie for them following Desperado and From Dusk till Dawn.
Are these books oversized or standard size?
Wow, I much prefer this mess of a series in B&W. Who knew?
Thanks for doing this! I went in thinking I was totally going to disagree with you. As a colorist with a crazy palette myself I’m a huge apologist and fan of DK2 from the word jump. But I see now how sublime and leaps and bounds better it is in black and white. And that’s my argument for the new FM covers that have been largely roasted. I think it’s a natural progression in the de-evolution of distilling his own art in a constant pursuit of deconstruction. The genius is there-it’s the colors that are dragging it down. Miller is best in b&w and should really be colored correctly if at all. Bad choice to do any kind of modern technique or rendering. (But I have affection for those crazy colors still!)
: O
As a movie, not terrible. As a halloween movie it fails
“I hope you like #@%! as much as I do!” 🤣
Do you think Batman can... you know?
Can you explain whats up with the Evil Teddybear in the Anime Pluto?
I really love DKII especially Varley’s work here, she’s really pushing the boundaries and the fact that it pisses off the traditional comics fans is part of what makes it so effective
Miller is reaching for transgressiveness here as well and leaning more into his cartooning style and instead of matching with Varley or her with him it creates a juxtaposition of styles
Man, anyone else get a strong GI Joe Dreadnoks vibe from the Hairies?
Hell yes, Tom!
My brain may be making things up but I thought there was also a prequel where he was wandering around on an alien world (relative to us), doing his botany thing.
This idea is an absolute travesty, an atrocious yet limp assault against filmmaking and even storytelling itself, pathetically left unmade. I feel cheated.
This is a great episode, guys! Thank you for these
Id love to see you guys cover Skizz! alan moores ET
Oh, cool reference!...Is Bruno a reference to anything?
I'm more curious as to what a milk baby is. I've never hears that as an insult. Carrie even mentioned later how Toyman smells like milk too
Total shot in the dark that probably isn't right: It's another way of calling someone childish or a mama's boy/girl. They never grew up to ween off of mother's milk. Another, More Likely Guess: Future slang to give the future its own feeling while still sounding as casual as the insults and words we have today. Like Batman Beyond's "shway," but mean rather than a compliment.
@@seantaylor424 I always assumed it meant childish or immature.
Saturday Morning Damnation Alley
yes! Wonder if Matt and Tom have seen Damnation Alley
@@keiljones2902They *must* have
Hawaii 5-0 also used Star Trek sound effects.
Alternate universe nostalgia critic review we will never get.
This looks amazing... never heard of it, but check out that production design.
This was one of those shows that never made it to the UK and therefore seemed impossibly exotic and mysterious see also, Land of the Lost, Jason of Star Command and many more! Great to have you back guys.
The child bomb robot gimmick was also appropriated by Harlan Ellison, in that weird but very cool two issue story arc he wrote for Daredevil in the 80s.
The daredevil Harlan Ellison issues came out years before dark knight returns
Super fun discussion. Let's get the Scioli comic book adaptation of ET2: Nocturnal Fears
E.T. 2 sounds like the Exorcist 2. Random swerve to brain scans and jungian horror.
there was an early 1983 fanzine that printed rumors about this. it was right on. their predictions for Revenge of the Jedi were incorrect
Spielberg didn't direct Twisters.
The TV talking heads always seemed to me to be a device lifted from Chaykin’s AMERICAN FLAGG (to great effect! I don’t blame Miller for utilizing it.).
Agreed, the layouts and storytelling are completely the same
"Helmut Schwanzstucker" almost killed me, since I laughed so I started choking on my sammich.
Reminds me of the fake porn from meatballs 3. Eat Me: the sextra terrestrial.
Everything about this sequel is so wrong headed. So glad it was never made. Great to see you guys back btw!
This was my first read on the story. I didn't even know DK2 exists so I never knew about the terrible reviews. I thought it was really good. After reading I looked for reviews and only then I saw the bad feedback and hate comments about the book saying DK2 stands for Donkey Kong 2. This is a good book, a good Frank Miller book, Batman story by Frank Miller and that's all it is. It really is good.
When I read The Dark Knight Returns, I never understood the dolls. I've never seen anything like them before or since. Your theory makes as much sense as anything.
Hope you color this one with your pallet! It really is a whole different experience without the early digital color.
I just assumed they were robots that just so happened to be life-like
That Martian Manhunter sketch reminds me so much of something Jeff Lemire would draw
As a kid …in 2002…I thought the dolls were a toy man reference
Fantastic find & connection 👍
Humpty Dumpty built them. So I don't question it. He fixes things. He fixes people.
Fascinating pull, Tom! Speaking of the DKR Kayfabe discussion, you mentioned an alternate ending that was floated where Batman has to escape the GCPD and becomes a leader of the underworld-- that has always totally captured my imagination, but I've never been able to find more info on it. Do you recall where that info came from? I'd love to know more.

Love your analysis Tom!
It was one of the first DC things I ever read. I found it odd but assumed that it was an established thing in older comics. Although later I realized that wasn't the case.
Manny stallman is incredible! He has a great short in creepy! I love his work in thunder agents!
Those Crestwood Monsters books are an instant nostalgia rush like almost no other.
If you're going down the rabbit hole, check out book 3, when Batman masquerades as an old woman... who looks like Carmen Cru, a comic book character Miller might have seen in French Ticklers. Note the French colors of the scarf! Although I remember Bats masked similarly in Detective 411. Is it a common trope? There's stuff like that in DKSA as well; the Kryptonite gauntlets go all the way back to a 1968 issue of World's Finest... I've always wondered about that iconic scene when he rides the horse - is it a reference to Zorro?
It's funny cos at the time when it came out I thought they were part of Batman lore I wasn't aware of. Love how they're not explained at all. I think you've cracked it Tom! Great video hope there's many more!
Fascinating stuff. Though I thought this was a disappointing disaster when it came out, in a way it’s more interesting to analyze than TDKR-even if TDKR is vastly superior. Btw Grant Morrison made an interesting defense of DK2 on a podcast once, (I think it was fat man on Batman) that made me appreciate it a little more.
I had just assumed that guy working for joker was toyman who had built himself robotic children for his own upsetting reasons and joker upon seeing them thought it would be a hoot to turn these facsimiles of innocent youth into instruments of death but honestly now i hope your right cuz i LOVE a comic artist making super deep cut references to comics only like five people remember.
Terrible Artwork, terrible story. DK2 is easily Miller's weakest work imo.
